iPhone SE (2020) Unboxing & Review: Flagship Killer?

Hi I'm Michael, Josh you're, watching gadget, match and welcome to my living room for some Quarantine content. Today, we're reviewing the new iPhone SE and, as always, we'll try to answer some of your questions, but before we can dive in, we need to get this phone out of its box and I have a feeling. This is going to be a nostalgic and sentimental unboxing not too long ago. We recently crossed the half a million subscriber mark, but I can remember it like it was just yesterday when we didn't have a lot of subscribers and I flew to Singapore to be one of the first to buy and unbox the original iPhone SE and who can remember our iPhone 8 unboxing, which was shot entirely on a tennis court. Well, this phones kind of fuses both of those phones together. It retains the name of the original iPhone SE, but comes in the body of the iPhone 8.

Alright enough talking, let's get on with part one of this video, our iPhone SE unboxing. Let's do this right here on the side of the box. It just says iPhone to begin look for the flap with the green arrow and pull first up designed in California packet. You'll, find your welcome, guide, sim ejector tool and stickers next lift on this tab to retrieve the iPhone SE. It's almost surreal seeing this home button over here.

It's been many years since I last used touch ID today, we're unboxing a white iPhone SE, with a black face and a white back made of glass, its aluminum frame has a silver finish notice. Furthermore, it's only got one camera we'll dive more into that later. Also in the box, a tiny 5 watt, charger, lightning head and a USB, a two lightning cable. All right, we'll keep this short. So we'll have more time for your questions.

Let's set this up, and I'll see you in a few days or the review one-week later, hey guys it's one week later, and I thought I'd put on something new today, sometimes it takes just dressing up a little to make. You feel good inside, however, that isn't the same case with the new iPhone SE, just like how the original iPhone SE took the tried and tested design of the iPhone 5s, the new iPhone SE reuses, the chassis of the iPhone 8, including its frosted aluminum frame and glass back the phone comes in three colors black white and product red fun fact. The logo is now centered another fun fact the face on the white iPhone SE is black. The gold and silver iPhone eights were actually white up front. Now.

That familiar face is something we've seen since the iPhone 6 from 2015, with a thick forehead and chin just enough space for that iconic circular home button. So sure one could say the iPhone 8 looks old, and you'd be right, but you don't buy the iPhone SE for its revolutionary new design. You buy it for its price tag and for three hundred dollars less than the iPhone 11 and at least six hundred dollars off any Android flagship. For that matter, I don't even want to start. It's probably a cult favorite by now and from a nostalgic point of view.

I could see how that would have been very popular in 2020, but I wonder if it would be too small a screen for the things we do on phones these days. In fact, a lot of you in the comments section asked if Apple was also planning on selling a larger model of the SE, the same size as the iPhone 8 plus, and if you asked that question, let me briefly answer I, really, don't think they will now because I use the iPhone 11 Pro max as my daily driver. This phone feels tiny to me, but I have to remind myself that it's just about the same size as the iPhone 11 Pro, its large forehead and chin notwithstanding I, don't feel like I'm using any less of an iPhone. Just a smaller one. I think it's an important jump off point following our discussion on design to address the perception that this is an old iPhone and that's why I want to talk about the a13 Bionic chip.

Next, this processor, that's on the iPhone. Se is the same one that powers the flagship, iPhone 1111, Pro and 11 Pro max. So while it's appropriate to see the iPhone SE as Apple's budget or mid-range, offering, unlike any budget or mid-range Android phone, the chip that powers, the new SE, is powerful on top of the line, so whether you're playing graphics, rich games like sky children, of light learning about the coronavirus in an are on jig space, making the most out of quarantine by studying a new language and using my favorite language, app memorized to point at objects to get instant translations or editing that 4k footage you just shot both the CPU and GPU. That's on the a13 Bionic chip have enough raw power to handle any of these tasks. The third component of this system on a ship is the mural Engine 8 Coraz?n, the a13 Bionic versus the 8:11, and that's what the new iPhone SE uses to get a camera performance boost despite having the same hardware as the iPhone, 8 and 10 are yep.

All three phones have the same single 12, megapixel wide-angle camera with AF 1.8 lens on their rear and a 7 megapixel camera with an F 2.2 lens up front on the iPhone 8. A single camera system meant no portrait mode on the iPhone 10. Our app will use technology called focus pixels to create a depth map that was used for portrait mode on the new iPhone SE apple says it harnesses the knurl engine for real I'm machine learning, a process called monocular depth estimation. So the new iPhone SE has eight portrait lighting features natural light, studio, light, contour, light stage, light stage, light, mono and high key mono. Apple has come a long way since its introduced.

The beta version of portrait lighting on the iPhone, 8, plus, and you'll find that even with more challenging subjects like chai, who always complains that phones don't know how to cut her out properly. The new iPhone SE does a decent job, even with its single lens. I. Think you'll find that during the day, even during sunset, through a blue hour, the iPhone SE held its own versus the newer iPhone 11 and 11 Pro. Max takes this shot.

For example, all three phones have smart HDR, so it preserves highlights and shadows on your face, keeping it natural-looking, while also preserving details. In the background. In all these samples, the results are very similar if I were to nitpick the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro produce more vibrant colors and in some cases, are sharper with more detail other times it was almost impossible to tell the difference while the phone did a good job at cut-outs blur on the higher-end models. Looked more like they were taken with a DSLR. Take a look at my arm.2 on the iPhone SE, s photo. That part is a bit blurry as well.

Some camera features that didn't make their way to the iPhone.11 are deep, fusion and tonight mode. So in low-light scenarios, where night mode will automatically kick in on the iPhone 11 Pro Max the iPhone SE will not take a look at the shot of colored pencils, which I took in a dimly lit room. The iPhone, 11 and 11 Pro engaged a one-second exposure, so the shots came out brighter with less noise and very accurate colors. The iPhone SE produced a decent photo, but the subject was softer and there was definitely more noise, but it's really when the lights go out, where the results are more obvious. Before I move on Raymond on Facebook asks a perfect question: why doesn't it have night mode when they put the a13 Bionic, which is capable of doing such stunning photography at night, while you're, right and night mode relies on the power of the a13 Bionic chip? It also relies on a larger and better image sensor on the iPhone, 11 and 11 Pro now you'll.

Remember a larger image sensor lets in more light and the iPhone uses a multiple shot for an even better photo. Now this part is probably just speculation on my end, but without that larger image sensor I, don't think the results would have been as good, so Apple probably made the decision not to include Apple uses the same tech to deliver portrait mode using the selfie camera, as this is a slower lens with fewer megapixels. The results are different, but good enough here are some selfie portraits taken across various shooting conditions. Speaking of that selfie camera page asks on Instagram. Does it have emoji? The answer is yes, and no, let's take a look at iMessage together.

Shall we'll find under stickers? There are an emoji z' and memo cheese and by the way on iOS 13.4, there are new stickers. This sticker of me rolling. My eyes are so accurate from there. You can dive in and create new memo G's, but because it doesn't have that true depth system used for face ID, there's no face tracking, so you can't animate them. Having used face ID for like three years now, I've got to say, touch ID took some getting used to, but it was as fast and as accurate as I.

Remember. At times like these, where I often have to wear a mask, it's good to have an option to easily unlock my phone or pay for things at the store. Happy promises about the same amount of battery life as the iPhone 8 and in my week with the phone I found that to be true, the iPhone SE s battery lasted a day on a single charge, with average use, as you saw earlier in the unboxing, the phone ships with a 5 watt charger similar to that on the iPhone 11. A 30-minute charge will get you to 25% 60 minutes to just under 50 and in 90 minutes to 69% a full charge takes over 2 hours before we wrap up. Lets a rapid-fire, some of your questions.

Does it have wireless charging yep it does. Is it water and dust resistant yep? It has an ip67 rating band as I always say: Apple doesn't cover water damage, and it's warranty so don't take your iPhone for a swim, stereo or mono speakers stereo speakers, a combo of bottom firing grills and an earpiece that doubles as a speaker also, and they're decently. Loud here. Give it a listen, does it support 4k 60fps? Yes, it does. You can shoot 4k, video at 24, 30 and 60 fps, and here's a sample shot using the iPhone SE s main camera and built-in microphones.

What do you think of this video quality? Let me know in the comments section below: does it support 3d touch or haptic touch? The new iPhone SE has an LCD HD Retina display like the newer iPhones. It has haptic touch, which is more of a long press. Instead of having to exert different amounts of pressure on the screen. Ezequiel asks, is it really you'll sim? Yes, but it doesn't have space for to physical NATO SIM cards instead, there's a space for one NATO, SIM and one ISA. So is the new iPhone SE your gadget match if you're an iPhone user you've been holding on to your iPhone, 6, 7 or even 8, and haven't upgraded for many reasons.

Maybe that's just how long you hold on to your phone, or you just didn't, want to let go of touch ID or weren't willing to spend more than $600 for a new for. Wait, no more! The iPhone SE was made for you. It is your gadget match if you're a parent, already an iPhone user, looking to purchase an inexpensive iPhone for your child. So you can FaceTime and iMessage track them or share a family account for apps and services like Apple, arcane and TV, plus the iPhone. Se is perfect for you too, but if you already own an iPhone, 10 or 11 series, you'll want to wait till the end of the year for Apple's next flagship.

If you need to buy an iPhone today, but what more than one camera shoot a lot of night photos and prefer a more current looking device with an edge to edge screen features like face ID. My recommendation is the iPhone 11 and if you really want to go all out, get the iPhone, 11, Pro or pro max price of just $200. More I can see why this is the most requested head-to-head from you guys, especially since the iPhone SE and iPhone 10, are share the same camera system. Let me start with pros for the 10 off it's a larger phone with a bigger display. It's got a larger battery that should last longer, and it has faced ID for quick and secure unlocking of your phone and now pros for the SE, an updated processor which gives its camera and edge things like next-gen, smart, HDR and better depth sensing some software improvements ? like 6 portrait lighting effects, instead of 4 and quick, take using both front and rear cameras.

If you ask me, I wouldn't get the iPhone 10 R in 2020, so I either get the iPhone SE or spend a little more and get the iPhone 11, which one should I buy. iPhone SE or iPhone 8 Apple doesn't sell the iPhone 8 anymore. Last week before the new iPhone SE went on sale, it retailed for four hundred and forty-nine dollars. The iPhone SE is $50 less with updated hardware and will get you at least five years worth of iOS updates versus at least two on the 8th. So even if you could buy the iPhone 8 from third-party resellers, I'd pick the SE no-brainer Timothy um, says I.

Hope you compare this with the 1 plus 8 I'm, having a hard time deciding on the two I. Usually don't compare iPhones and androids they're, just two different ecosystems that have their own pros and cons, but because a lot of you asked I'll go ahead and try to answer the 1 + 8 starts at six hundred and ninety-nine dollars. That's a full $300 different. If that's how much money you're willing to spend on a phone I'd get the iPhone 11 over the non-pro 1 + 8 any day. Having said that, if you're, an Android user who's been thinking about switching but didn't want to break the bank on an iPhone now's the time to take the plunge in the Android world, only Google's, pixel, 3/8 clothes and while they're a close match when it comes to photos here, see for yourself the iPhone S II is made of premium materials and comes with top-of-the-line specs.

The 399 pixel 3 an is made of plastic and comes with a mid-range processor. Just to wrap up my thoughts. I want to borrow a tweet from my buddy Jonathan Morrison. He posted quote: OnePlus releases a near $1000 phone and Apple drops a 399 phone with the same chip as the iPhone 11 Pro. What is 20/20 right at a time when more phones are hitting that 1000 dollar price point? Who would have thought that Apple would be the one to build the flagship killer? Well, maybe that's a little of hyperbole.

Actually Key's asks. Is it the flagship killer of the new decade? Probably not, but it's the best value iPhone that Apple has ever sold and an easy recipient of the gadget match seal of approval. It's sub, $400 price tag means Apple, is going to sell even more iPhones sure they've sold an iPhone for 399 before the original iPhone SE, but that was in 2016 when phone prices were very different. If you take a look at how much of phone costs in 2020, it's easy to justify, calling the iPhone SE the most affordable iPhone of all time and I know. You've heard me say this over and over again there's more to owning an iPhone than just hardware, owning an iPhone means you can enjoy the entire Apple ecosystem, a wealth of apps services and seamless integration with many Apple products.

This phone is significant and I'll. Tell you why? Because it is the cheapest iPhone ever sold. It also means that more people can take part in this experience. And if you ask me, that's a huge step forward, and that was our iPhone SE unboxing and review. What do you guys think about this new iPhone?
