Hi everyone Aaron here for Zollotech and the iPhone 8 plus and the iPhone 12 Pro max are both the top of the line when it comes to their respective sort of overall design inversion, meaning a phone with touch ID and the LCD as opposed to an OLED display and what's the top of the line today or the latest. And so I want to help you decide if you should choose, maybe the iPhone 8 plus still or maybe upgrade to an iPhone 12 Pro max. So I'll talk about price and everything from speed to the cameras and more, if you'd like to see exactly what I talk about and when check out the description for the time codes below, and so the first thing is the price. The iPhone 8 plus is no longer sold new by apple, but you can get it from different websites and many times even new, on different websites that have them left over, and they're about five hundred dollars. So they range from anywhere from about 500 to 600. And currently or the last generation that they made come in at 64 and 128 gigabytes.
They come in space, gray, silver, gold and a special red edition as well. This is the space gray version with the iPhone 12 Pro max. Well, it's more than double the price at this point it starts at 1099, goes up to 1 399 and has three storage options: 128 gigabytes, 256, gigabytes and 512. Gigabyte comes in pacific, blue gold, graphite and silver, and this is the pacific blue model in 256 gigabytes. Now both of them are built quite a bit different.
The iPhone 8 plus is a very large phone as well, but this is made of aluminum and glass, so it has aluminum on the outside edge glass front and back where the iPhone 12 Pro max is stainless steel on the outside edge and again glass front and back. The 12 pro max also has a nice matte finish to the glass except around the cameras, where it's a little like normal glass or more glossy, and then also the iPhone 12 Pro max has ceramic shield, which is four times less likely to crack in the event that you drop your phone from say compared to the 11 pro max. So it should be even better than the 8 plus, and some of that I think, has to do with this- the screen being flushed to the actual frame of the phone, so that should help with that as well. Now the 8 plus is a little lighter because it is aluminum, it's 7.13, ounces or 202 grams and the iPhone 12 Pro max is 8.03 ounces or 228 grams, now size, wise, they're, very comparable. The 8 plus seems to be a little wider, just a tiny bit wider.
At least it feels that way, and the 12 pro max is a little taller, so they're very similar in size, but the 12 pro max is a few millimeters taller, so you may or may not notice that difference, but it definitely feels bigger with the squared off edges. If we go around the outside edge, let's take a look at them. You can see that we have the power sleep, wake button on the right hand, side just like we always have and then on the 8 plus we have the sim card tray on the 12 pro max. We don't have a sim card tray on the right hand, side, but we have a millimeter wave antenna if you're in the United States on the top. We don't really have anything there, except for an antenna line on the 12 pro max now, on the left hand, side we have our silent switch, followed by our volume rockers and on the 12 pro max.
Furthermore, we have our sim card tray, so they've put it on the left hand, side of the 12 pro on the bottom of the phone. Of course, they have their lightning ports, and then you have asymmetric speaker and microphone holes on the 12 pro max, where they're symmetrical on the 8 plus. So that's a little nicer. Looking on the 8 plus, in my opinion, and the obvious difference between the two on the front is of course face ID versus touch ID. So with face ID, you simply pick up your phone look at it and swipe up at the same time with touch ID.
Well, it's been a lot around long enough that you know you just press hold, and it unlocks. So it's very fast about the same on both, and you'll unlock quickly on either one it's just really down to what works best for you and in today's current environment touch ID may be a little better for you right now. But of course you have those large bezels from top to bottom, and the displays are both very different on these phones. So the iPhone 8 plus has a 5.5 inch lcd with 1920 by 1080, pixels or basically 1080p with 401 pixels per inch. It has 3d touch so when you press and hold on an icon, it just pops right up it's much faster than what we have on the 12 pro max with haptic touch, and it works really.
Well, it's pressure sensitive, and it still has that feature so that part's built in it goes up to 625 nits of brightness. So it's not as bright as the 12 pro max, but the 12 pro max has a different display on it. A 6.7 inch super retina Dr OLED display with HDR it's 2778 by 1284 with 458 pixels, like I said it has haptic touch, but it has the regular brightness of 800 nits when you turn it all the way up, and it can go up to 1200 nits of brightness when you're watching HDR video, so it's very bright and works really well and has great viewing angles. So when you look at the display, as you can see, they look about the same right now. Obviously, there's a very big difference in size, but you're not going to see the pixels on either one of them.
They both have very good viewing angles and the 8 plus, even though it's 625 nits still goes plenty bright outside. So there's not really an issue there. However, the iPhone 12 Pro max because it's an OLED uses, what's called PWM or pulse width modulation, to regulate the overall brightness of the display by flashing it now. This is not something you can see but seems to bother about 1 in 10 people and under slow motion. You can capture this, and you can see the display is flickering just from sitting there if it's at full brightness, it's not, but it has to be at full brightness as you bring it down.
It actually slows the flickering to reduce that brightness on an LCD. It doesn't do that it's just on all the time, and it won't bother or strain your eyes. So if you're someone that suffers from this, it's much, much better with the 12 pro max than any other generation of the iPhones. So it probably won't bother you, but if you are sensitive to that, then the eight plus may be the option for you, because it doesn't do that at all now, internally, they're very different as well. The iPhone 8 plus has the a11 bionic CPU, with three gigabytes of ram, where the iPhone 12 Pro max actually has an a14 bionic with six gigabytes of ram.
So there's a very big difference as far as that with the neural engine on them as well. It's newer in the 12 pro max and should help with much faster operation of more complex tasks now with using the phones for everyday tasks, you're going to have about the same sort of experience. If you open things like music, for example, it should be nice and fast. Everything from opening the camera should be nice and quick you're not going to have any delays really there and just going into settings and doing average tasks. You really shouldn't see a difference, however, when you're doing things, maybe opening a game or maybe exporting 4k video, you could see a difference, so let's go ahead and try a game quickly, see how quickly it loads we'll go into Minecraft, we'll rotate.
The phone here now remember the 12 pro max has six gigabytes of ram, so we'll go ahead and hit play on both we'll hit, create new, create new world, then we'll hit create wait for it here hit proceed on that one. Let's see how long this takes and what I find oftentimes is the older phone actually loads some of these games more quickly and usually that's due to the way it can ramp up the speed of the processor. So when you're doing things that are simple like Minecraft, for example, it loads, nice and fast framework frame rates are nice and smooth all the time, and you're really not going to see much of a difference between the devices when it comes to something like that, however, when you're exporting 4k video well, that's going to be a little more intensive, so let's go ahead and close out of Minecraft here, close out of all of our apps. Now I've closed out all apps, except for iMovie. So let's go into iMovie and see how quickly we can export 4k video.
Now this is video that was recorded on an iPhone in 4k quite some time ago. In fact, you can see it was modified today and what I did is if I go into edit you'll see if we go all the way to the end, it's three minutes and 46 seconds. That's the same on both of these, and I've put the same titles at the same point on both of these as well, so they're the exact same video. So, let's see how quickly we can export them, since one should be much faster than the other. You can see that they're the same with the same titling, so we'll slide these over here then I have another phone I'll use as a stopwatch, so we'll bring these in there we go we'll hit done, and then we'll go ahead and hit share.
So let's go ahead and see if we can save the video at the same time, save and start and let's see which one exports faster, and they'll probably be closer than you would expect. So you can see how close both of them exported at and there's really not that much of a difference between either one. Sometimes you can export more quickly on a different device. That's a little older than you can on a new one, and sometimes it's the other way around, but usually it's within seconds of one another so that part's really great on both phones. Now they are a little warmer.
At least the eight plus is a little warm right around here. The 12 pro max doesn't feel warm at all, but it will get warm from time to time when doing intensive processes. Now, as far as the overall cameras well there's a big difference between the forward-facing cameras. Now the forward-facing camera on the iPhone 8 plus has basically a 7 megapixel camera with an f 2.2 aperture and can record 1080p at 30 frames per second, where the 12 pro max has a 12 megapixel forward facing camera f 2.2 again, but can record 4k 60 has night mode deep fusion, 4k, 60, Dolby Vision, HDR as well, along with animal and Moroni. So you can do a lot more with the forward facing camera on the 12 pro max.
The rear cameras are very different as well, so the iPhone 8 plus has decent rear cameras, but there's only two of them, and so what we have on the back is dual 12 megapixel sensors, with a wide f 1.8 and a telephoto f 2.8. It can record in 4k 60 as well and on the 12 pro max, there's a very big difference. So these are all new cameras that are larger. Sensors are better in low light, but also are triple 12 megapixel cameras. You have an ultra-wide f 2.4, a wide f 1.6 and a telephoto f 2.2 that can do two and a half optical zoom up to 5x punching into this sensor. It also has apple pro raw support, night mode on all cameras, night mode, portraits smart hdr3 for photos and night mode time-lapse as well as HDR Dolby Vision HDR.
So if we go into the settings, go down to the camera here on both of them you'll see that the settings are very different, so the formats are very different as well. So we have 4k 60 on both. Let's go back here, 4k 60 on both, but you have HDR video on the 12 pro mac. So you have the option to record in 10 bites Dolby Vision, HDR, which is incredible if you've ever seen. Any of that, let's take a look at some photos and videos from the forward-facing and rear cameras as well.
This is the forward-facing camera of the iPhone 8 plus and the iPhone 12 Pro max and with the iPhone 12 Pro max, you have 4k with HDR. So if you have that enabled you have that ability to record Dolby Vision HDR, but with the 8 plus, you don't have that you only have up to 1080p. So there's a huge difference in the quality of the cameras. You can also see that the background looks a little better on the 12 pro max as the neural engine is processing the highlights and giving a little better dynamic range. Also, the 8 plus has a decent microphone, and you can hear the difference here with the 8 plus and then the 12 pro max.
Let me know which one you think sounds best in the comments below now. Like I said, the iPhone 12 Pro max supports HDR. So if we go to YouTube, for example, you can watch HDR there in the YouTube app here's my iPhone 12 Pro review. I filmed in HDR and if you look at the actual options for the quality we have 1080p now this is a 1080p display on the iPhone 8 plus. So it really makes no difference whether you're going to use that or not 4k may be an option for some, but basically it's a 1080p display, and it will scale.
However, we have 4k HDR on the 12 pro max, so you may be seeing 4k. Some people are on the 8 plus, but in general it's a 1080p display. The display on the 12 pro max is a little higher than that. Also, let's take a listen to the speakers, so you can hear the difference between both of them and see what you pro max to think this out and so far I'm really enjoying it. But I want to talk about the good and the bad, and so the first good thing is.
The key has been my main phone for the past five to six days. I've been using it full time. I switched from an 11 pro max to test this out and so far I'm really enjoying it, but I want to talk about the good and the bad, so those are the speakers of the 12 pro max versus the 8 plus, and the 8 plus has decent sound, but there's far less stereo sound coming from the top of this, this speaker here or the earphone at the top. So it makes a very big difference between the both of them and the overall sound quality is much better from the 12 pro max now. Both of them obviously have cellular connectivity, but the 12 pro max has 5g.
So you have 5g plus millimeter wave depending on your carrier, and you will get faster speeds depending on your coverage. It really depends on where you are, but you do have that option. It's not a huge reason to upgrade to this or to buy a 12 pro max, but it will get better over time, so it's sort of future proofing. If you don't have coverage in your area, you also get Wi-Fi 6 with the 12 pro max, where it doesn't have it on the 8 plus. So you do have all the same Wi-Fi bands, except for Wi-Fi six with the eight plus and they both have Bluetooth 5.0. Also water resistance is a little different, so the eight plus has ip67 for one meter for up to 30 minutes.
The 12 pro max is a quite a step-up at ip68 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, so it has much better water sealing around the outside edge and there's just a very big difference between them. As far as that goes now, when it comes to the battery, the iPhone 8 plus has a 2691 William hour battery, which is the same as the 7 plus basically, and will give you about five and a half to six hours of screen on time. The 12 pro max has a larger battery almost by a thousand William hours, and it's three thousand six hundred and eighty-seven William hours and has similar battery life to the eleven pro max. You can expect about ten to twelve hours of screen on time with regular use, so it has almost doubled the screen on time in regular use than the 8 plus. That is a very big difference and very noticeable when you're, using them regularly day to day now, both have the ability to fast charge 50 in 30 minutes.
They both have wireless QI, support or wireless charger support, but the 12 pro max has mag safe support, so this will be more relevant in the future, but basically it allows 15 watt fast charging, VO wireless connection, and it will charge the phone wirelessly that way it's magnetic and will adhere to it. You can get things like car mounts that will help attach to the phone and keep it secure. So you do have that option as well, and that will be nicer in the future now which one should you choose? Well, that really depends on whether you think the 12 pro max is worth over double the cost of the 8 plus, and so, if it is, then it's obviously going to be an easy choice with the OLED display. The better cameras and just the newer, build with the squared off edges. However, the 8 plus is a great phone.
You could get over two of these for the price of the 12 pro max, and it's still relevant today and will get updates for many years to come. You'll get about five to six years of updates generally from apple, so we still have a few years left with the eight plus, so I would expect maybe up to iOS 18 or so with the 8 plus, where it will get regular updates. So it's still relevant today in that way, and of course it doesn't have PWM, and it has touch ID which is much easier in today's environment, so it really just depends on which one works best for you, if you're more budget conscious, but you want a larger display, go with the eight plus. If you have to have the latest and greatest go with the 12 pro max. You'll love the camera on here and the battery life.
Let me know which one you would choose in the comments below if you'd like to get your hands on this wallpaper. Of course, I'll link it in the description like I normally do and if you haven't subscribed already please subscribe and if you enjoyed the video please give it a like, as always thanks for watching this is Aaron I'll, see you next time.
