iPhone 7 & 7 Plus Review - The Good and The Bad

Hi everyone Aaron here for Solo Tech and we're going to review the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7, plus I've, been using the 7 plus, is my daily driver. Since the day it came out, it's been a few weeks now, and I wanted to take that time to find the good and bad about the device. So this is going to be not a typical review, but the top 10 positive things in top 10 negative things. I could find about these phones. So the first thing is we'll start with the positives, and the first thing is the great displays the displays haven't changed as far as resolutions are concerned on the right way of the iPhone 7. It comes in with a 1334 by 750 pixel resolution with 326 pixels per inch on the Left.

We have the iPhone 7 plus at 1920 by 1080 or 1080p, and it has 401 pixels per inch. Now, that's nothing new compared to the last versions, but we do now have a wide color display or P 3 color gamuts, and that gives us more range of colors. So we have a bigger range of colors, and they really pop when you're looking at them directly it's hard to tell if I was going to show you on this camera next to something else which looks more vibrant. In fact, some other phones with an AMOLED display will look more vibrant, because this is an LCD or an IPS LCD, which means it has great viewing angles, it's very bright in the Sun, and it's what you'd expect, but now it's a little more vibrant those photos and everything you take with it or watch on the screen. Looks great! So that's a nice positive for this actual device.

The next thing is the slightly new design. The design is well-loved by a lot of people from the iPhone 6 and 6 plus, but what they've done is change a couple of things. This is the new phone for the 7 plus, and what you can see here is there are no lines across the back. The cameras changed a little, and we'll talk about that in a moment, but there are no lines for the antennas on the back. In fact, they're kind of integrated in if you can see that here, they're integrated into the back, and it does a perfect job, at least in this color and the jet black- that we have here of hiding it.

You really can't see those lines too much. They don't stand out at all. The next thing are the colors. Obviously we have these two new colors. This is black or should be called flat black, and we have this super shiny jet black.

They both look great. This is a different type of coating, and it does scratch fairly easily. But this one's held up pretty well in a case so far, and I really like the new colors. It's a nice new thing, especially to have this nice black color. We still have silver, and we have gold and rose gold gone is the space gray, so that's another positive they're, always adding something new as far as that goes they've also with the design.

Given this a new home button that I didn't mention before and the home button no longer clicks physically, but it clicks it kind of feels like the whole device clicks. When you push it I like it, I got used to it and I think it works well. The fourth positive is they have much better stereo speakers, and before they didn't have stereo speakers and what Apple has done is kind of do something different. You still have your speaker's on the bottom. Here you have a speaker, a microphone in your Lightning port, and then you have your earpiece that you listen to phone calls with, but what they do during video, playback or music, is they boost the volume of this one to kind of even out both of the sounds, and they go really loud.

Let me show you so here is my battery tips, video for iOS, 10, and I'll play it, and I'll turn the volume all the way up. So it goes nice and loud, and I'm talking over the top of it, but it's pretty loud, and it's nice and clear, and you can hear it from both sides. Although the bottom speaker does seem a little louder, they both sound great, and they're much louder than the previous generation. So that's a positive for many people. The next thing is, it has a great camera.

The cameras on the back have been upgraded quite a bit. In fact, both cameras, or both phones now have optical image, stabilization, which was specific to the Plus models before. But what the plus model gains is an additional two times, some camera. So you have two cameras, you have a normal lens, and then you have a 2x zoom lens, and you can seamlessly transition between the two on the plus, and they've also increased the amount of light these captures. So it really does much better in low and to show you that now before we do that, let me go into the camera app, but I do want to show you some photos and what this does.

If you want to zoom, you hit this button, or you can go back the photo we can actually transition in and out, and you'll see that in some of the video that I took as well, you can do it in video and the other thing is in 10.1, depending on when you're watching this it's in beta on this phone, but 10.1 lets you take portraits and using both cameras, it senses depth and gives you a nice both or a blurred background effect. So it looks perfect, and you'll see that in some photos as well, it doesn't have to be a person. It has to be just anything within that distance and then it kind of calculates the distance between what the background is and the foreground. It's really nice. So let's take a look at the photos now, I think those photos looked pretty great, and this 12 megapixel camera picks up a lot better light than it did before.

You've also got this quad LED flash, which is much brighter as well. Now, on the front they've made some changes. We now have a forward facing camera that has 7 megapixels and that's quite an upgrade compared to the previous generation. In fact, I've been facetiming with some people, and let's flip this over here in facetiming people have actually said it picks up a lot of light so much so that it actually people thought they were seeing me in daylight and asking me where I was because it was dark where they were, and they're not far away. So it picks up a lot of light, and it's surprising both the front and rear camera pick up more light.

Most of the time, then you can actually see yourself. It's pretty impressive. As far as that goes, the next positive is Apple has included ip67 certification, and what that means is that, basically, the phones are water, resistant and dust resistant and the water resistance is up to 30 minutes in about six feet of water or something around that now there are people that have tested it much deeper than that, and it seems to hold up pretty well, but there are gaskets all around these, the display and all the buttons and the speakers. Everything has a gasket now even the SIM card tray when you pop it out, it has a gasket there that it didn't have before, and it just helps protect it that much more. So it's its pretty nice that they've added that the next positive is.

It includes a very fast 8th, infusion processor. Now I did a separate video on benchmarks, and I'll. Clue include a link above, so you can take a look at that and the benchmarks are pretty impressive: it's aside from just being numbers, it's really fast. It doesn't ever seem to lag. It's just quick.

You can pop in and out of things really quickly, and it never really has a lag at all. It's superfast. The camera opens quickly. You can open it, quick, take a quick snapshot and get out, and it's really nice. It works really well and I.

Realize I didn't take a photo there, but if you want to catch something quickly, this is much faster to do it on this, and what they've done is included a quad-core processor. This phone has 2 gigabytes of RAM. This one has 3 gigabytes of RAM, so quad-core processor they've got two cores that are very fast in two more power-efficient cores to help with battery life, and that is the next positive. The next positive is better battery life. Now, in the iPhone seven, the battery Matt a better battery life is up to about two hours over the previous generations, so iPhone 6, iPhone, 6s you're, going to get about one to two hours better and on the seven plus you'll get about one hour better I find that it easily lasts throughout the day.

In fact, some people are telling me it lasts two days without a problem on the plus. So that's a nice thing to see them build in a larger battery that lasts longer due to the new processor as well. The build quality is one of the next positives. Now Apple just keeps continuing to build these better and better, and this may not seem like a major positive, but by moving these antenna lines and just relocating some things, adding gaskets. If you look at some websites that take these apart, they're built really solidly now I know there's going to be defects, there's millions and millions of these made, but they're built really solidly and really well.

I've actually never had a problem with mine other than my previous generation with an issue with one of the speakers. Otherwise, this just keeps getting better and better and there's less moving parts. Now that the home button doesn't move at all the final positive is iOS 10 iOS 10 is a major upgrade over iOS 9. It's got huge updates to messages to photos to music to mail, you name it. It's been tweaked and changed.

The notifications have changed for better for worse, and it's just a pretty solid upgrade. It seems fast on this device, I'm not sure about previous devices, but a lot of people have a lot of positive things to say about iOS, 10, and I have a full, comprehensive review of that or overview of that I'll link in this video as well, but iOS 10 I, think, is a positive for the majority of people. So, let's move on to the negatives. After using these for a few weeks, there's obviously going to be some negatives and the first one is going to be kind of counter to what I just said in that iOS 10 may be a negative for some on previous verse. I phone it can slow down on this phone iOS 10.

For me, for example, I! Don't like the notifications, I, don't like these bubbles here and I, like the previous one, that was just cleaner and more translucent and looked better and that's one of my negative things about iOS, 10, I, think the music app looks more simplistic and not as good I. Think they've changed this around so that it's just too simple, and I'd like it to be more intuitive and more nice. Looking I guess it just looks too plain I! Think at this point the next negative is going to be the obvious one. We have no headphone jack anymore. The headphone jack has gone.

We now have the lightning cable and wireless, so we can get these expensive wireless Bluetooth headphones. We can get the Beats headphones, and they've included a w1 chip that helps with Bluetooth and that's a positive really. But the negative thing is now: you have actually to carry a little adapter around with you or nothing at all or use or buy new wireless headphones, and that's going to be either not an issue for you or a big issue, for you just depends on what you were doing before. If you plug this into your car via lightning, or you're, using lightning headphones. There are some included in the box, but they're the crappy regular iPhone headphones they're, not any upgraded ones.

So, in order to get nice wireless headphones, you can use regular Bluetooth ones with them, but you still won't get the quality, or you can use a little adapter, and it's just a pain. Quite honestly, the next negative thing is the design now I said in the positives. Was the design as well. It's a solid design that a lot of people like, but it's also a three-year-old design that they've, basically from most people's perspective, they've moved the antenna lines up to the top and bottom, and they've changed the camera. Everything else is the same.

So as far as that goes, a lot of people were looking for something new, and we're probably going to have to wait for that for the next version. Right now, we've just got a similar version which isn't bad, it's still nice-looking. But it's feeling old at this point in the next negative is maybe pushing it a little. But with these new finishes, while they're a little drippy, sometimes they're very slippery. Most of the time, this phone is less slippery than I thought, but it's still very slippery.

It's also a very big fingerprint magnet can see. This is this was cleaned right before the video and just by doing this video you can see the smudges in it just from me picking it up. So it looks great, but it smudges really easy and over time who knows how it will hold up, but it's still very slippery and really needs a case or a skin or something to add some grip. If you are prone to dropping your phone often it is also due to that old design, no longer feel special. The iPhone is starting to I guess, stagnate.

Io's was refreshed a few years back, and now they just keep adding features, and it's hard to really innovate and add new features to something that's refined and that's true of most operating systems these days, but right now, it's just starting to feel like it's the same thing for a long time and there's nothing new and special about it. It's got a similar design. It's got a similar design to the UI, and it is what it is for many people that's a positive and for many it's a negative, so it just depends on how you look at this, but that definitely could be a negative for some. The sixth negative has to do with USB. See USB see is only on one of Apple's devices, and they actually helped code sign USB, see in the spec 4.

It's a really nice well-built, cable and nice, reversible standard type, cable, and instead they've continued to put this lightning adapter in here and I know, people will get a little upset if they change it at this point, but it would be nice to have phones across all platforms using the same apples not really into standards too much. But look at the size of that. This is a Nexus device and USB, see and lightning are so similarly sized that I don't think it's going to be that big of a deal, and they're both SPENT for audio and should work fine with most devices as far as that's concerned, so I really don't know why they can't just flip it to that everyone will be happy eventually and will all have the same cables for every device we own. That would be something that would be really great in the future. The next thing is for the smaller iPhone, in particular the iPhone 7 battery life on smaller iPhones, compared to phones of similar size from other manufacturers that aren't iPhone is better and what I mean by that is.

If you pick up a Galaxy S7, for example, the battery in a s7 is a bigger battery in a similar size phone. It's its basically apples obsession with thinness that keeps the battery smaller. Now in the +, it's not really an issue, but on in the smaller size, it's definitely an issue for some, and they actually sell that battery case. So they recognize it's an issue but want to keep the design over the practicality, I suppose, which is nice, but on the go when you're out of battery it's not so nice. So that's something that's negative as well.

The next negative is this color right here, jet black is a great color. It looks great. It looks like the Mac Pro on an iPhone and the problem with it. Is it scratches really easy? It smudges really, really easy, and I know I mentioned this before, but this is one of the negatives that I thought I'd point out, because this color looks great, but they're scratches here, and they're light scratches just from putting it in the case so durability over time. They actually recommend a case for this Apple themselves does so they know it scratches it's an issue.

It looks great, but I'm not sure if I would really recommend it to most people. Ix negative is price. The price is really expensive. In fact, it hasn't dropped in price at all. Basically, since its introduction, it's only gone up, so the iPhone 7 starts at 649.

The seven-plus goes unto after-tax over $1000, so they bump the price about $30. On these now they did bump the storage 30 to 128 and 256, but they also bumped the price, which is unfortunate because even though it's a premium device, it's really, really expensive. And lastly, the 10th negative is there's no wireless charging. Now there are rumors of Apple bringing in true wireless charging where you don't set it on a charging pad like many other phones. Instead, you would have maybe a hotspot in your room that charges your device- maybe that's coming in the future, but right now we're left with inductive wireless charging.

Pads and Apple has never really thought to put those in their devices or thought it was a waste I think it's something that a lot of people would like and enjoy. So that's a negative thing, I think about this device. So those are my 10 positive negatives about the iPhone 7. Overall, it's a solid iPhone if you're coming from an iPhone, 5 5 s or even a 6 you're, going to find the speed bump quite a big, a big bump from what you're used to before you'll also find the camera a huge bump up, even from the 6s I'd say in certain situations, maybe in low-light those sorts of things you're going to see a big bump in performance, but for the rest of you, if you're coming from the 6s I'm, not so sure, you'd want to upgrade. You may want to wait until the next year, if you're, waiting for an iPhone but overall I think they're, decent phones and Apple will continue to.

Hopefully, innovate in iPhones we'll have to see what they do next time, but let me know what you think about them in the comments below. Have you picked up an iPhone 7? Do you plan to pick one up? Are you going to hold out to the next one? Let us know below if you haven't subscribed already, please subscribe and like as always thanks for watching this is Erin I'll see you next time.
