iPhone 12 vs iPhone 12 Pro

So you want to buy a new iPhone 12. There's only one rule choose wisely. It seems like there have never been more iPhone options than we have this year in 2020 new form factors, colors screen, sizes, storage options. The list goes on and on, but I think for most people it's going to come down to just two options: the iPhone 12 or the iPhone 12 Pro. These phones are both very similar, but also have some big differences that make the decision a little tough. So, in this video, I'm breaking down 10 of the major differences between the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro giving you all the information you need to know, and by the end of this video you will know exactly which one is right for you, and also a huge thanks to cleanmymacx for sponsoring this video.

If I was recording this video last year or in years past, this video would have been pretty self-explanatory and the script would have written itself because the differences between the 10r and the 10s or the 11, the 11 pro they were big enough to make the choice. Super simple. You had a lower end screen. You were missing some camera stuff. The form factors were different, but that is not the case.

This year, Apple has made the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro so similar that the choice is a lot more difficult to make starting first, because the screen sizes, and the form factor are pretty much the same. We are saying goodbye to the liquid retina LCD, one of the biggest complaints of the lower end iPhones in years. Past Apple is now unifying all the iPhone lineup this year with OLED screens across the board, and you now have the highest end. Super retina Dr display in all the iPhones. In fact, on a spec sheet basis, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro seem to have pretty much the exact same display.

The resolution is uh the same uh. The pixels per inch are the same. The contrast ratio about the only real difference I could find between these two phones is that the 12 pro supposedly gets a little brighter in typical uh scenarios than you'd find with the iPhone 12, though this is going to take a little more real-world testing to see if this actually makes a big difference. These essentially are the exact same screen, the exact same screen, size, and you're, essentially getting the same form factor, no matter which phone you go with 12 or 12 pro, and what I think this is really going to come down to between these two phones is price, because the difference between the 12 and 12 pro for the base models is 200 yeah. If you buy it, unlocked it's 30 more and there are some weird carriers, incentives and specials, but for the sake of simplicity, it's a 200 price difference which again makes me way more inclined to recommend the 12 and then try to justify the pro.

Because if you kind of look at both phones on the surface, there isn't a lot. The 12 pro gives you that you won't get on the 12. So what exactly are those differences? Well, they start on the surface and with build quality, so the iPhone 12 and 12 mini those phones are made out of aluminum. While the pro series is using apple's surgical grade stainless steel, this is a more premium material. It's heavier.

It's a little more durable, less prone to scratches and drops and chips. Furthermore, it's going to give you a little more of a premium feeling phone on the pro series than you're going to get on the 12. Some people might prefer the lighter phone with the aluminum build you're going to get on the 12, but the 12 pro is going to give you a little more of a premium finish a premium feeling phone, though they're both going to carry again pretty much the exact same design only difference here on the surface is build materials. Aside from that, there are some differences in color. If you want to go with more of the classic apple, the more you know premium colors you have that on the 12 pro you've got white, you have graphite, you've got the new kind of darker pacific, blue and the gold color, while the iPhone 12 is going to give you more of a splash of color.

You've got white red black, green and blue to choose from as well they're a little brighter a little more fun and playful. This might really come down again, of course, to personal preference. But if you want to express yourself with your phone, you want a bit of a splash of color. Then the 12 is going to be the way to go. The 12 pro has great colors, but they're a little more dark and a little more subdued than what you'd find compared to the 12.

Of course, we can't go much further into this comparison without kind of talking about the elephant in the room, the biggest real difference between these two phones, and that is the camera system. Now, first, let me start with the 12, because I think for 80 85 percent of people, the only two lenses they're really going to care about is the wide and ultra-wide angle lens, and you are getting that slightly improved wide angle lens here, the main shooter it's going to be a little better in low light, going to be able to capture a little more light in all scenarios. It's going to be a fantastic option for whatever you want to shoot photos, videos of friends, family food pets. I mean this is an awesome camera that is great and versatile and again, I think most people really just want that great main shooter, which is the wide lens and then the ultra-wide for some more fun creative shots. That's a great way to go on the 12.

The 12 pro is going to give you those same two lenses, but is also going to give you that third telephoto lens now to be clear. This is not the larger main lens that you'd find on the pro max. This is also not the 65 millimeter focal length telephoto. That's only on the max the 12 pro is going to give you the same two cameras as the 12 you're just going to get that additional telephoto lens on there as well- and this I hate to say this because I hate hearing this in videos. But this is kind of the case here.

The usefulness of the telephoto lens is really going to come down to personal preference. I'll give you kind of my own kind of anecdotal evidence here. I have owned an uh 11 pro for you know the last year, and I've owned the pro phones uh in years past that have all come equipped with the telephoto lens, and I don't use the telephoto lens all that much. But I will say it's nice to know that I have it. It makes the camera system a little more versatile having an extra digital, zoom and, probably more importantly, that optical zoom is really nice to have, and although I don't use it all the time, it is nice just knowing I have it there for the times.

I do need it when I'm taking photos and videos and just in any case the telephoto lens is a nice piece of equipment to have equipped on your phone, though you might not always need it, though I will say I really don't use it all that much. So I don't think it's critically important for myself and for many people I don't think it's a real big deal. Breaker there are some people that need that telephoto lens they want the most versatility of the camera equipped on their iPhone in their pocket. So in that case the pro is going to be the obvious choice. Maybe you'd even want to look at the pro max, but in this case here I think for again.85 of people the wide and the ultra-wide is going to be plenty powerful, plenty, versatile. It is going to give you just great looking photos and videos.

Now there is also an interesting argument to make when comparing the 12 and the 12 pro, because the 12 pro does give you all these extra features, plus that extra lens without having to compromise on form factor. You don't have to go down to the 5.8 inch version of the 11 pro like we had with last year, and you also don't have to go all the way up to the max the now massive 6.7 inch iPhone to get these extra camera features and lenses. You can get an additional lens and get all the other stuff we're going to talk about in the exact same form factor as you get on the iPhone 12 same exact 6.1 inch display. So if you do want those extra features, it's not like you have to sacrifice on portability or form factor you can get that in the exact same size of the 12 pro, which is kind of nice all right before we continue a little pro-tip here, regardless of which new iPhone you go for getting the data from your old iPhone to your new iPhone can be done through iCloud, but it's oftentimes, not as simple or as fast as going the old-fashioned way and plugging directly into your Mac. This also gives you a great way to kind of get a second copy of the most important data on your phone.

But in order to do this, maybe you're like me, and you need to kind of free up some space and clear up some junk. That's taking up all the space on your Mac's internal drive. Luckily we have this video sponsor clean, my Mac x, which is going to do just that get rid of all the junk files, all the log, all the cache files taking up space and also a lot more one of my favorite features of cleanmymac x is that you can download and install it directly from the Mac App Store, and once you do, you can do what's called a smart scan which is going to do three important things. It's going to get rid of all the log files, the cache files, all the junk. That's taking up space on your computer that you probably don't even know exists.

It's also going to do a security check scanning for any viruses, any malware making sure your Mac is safe and secure and keeping those bad guys at bay, and it's also going to pull all the large files that have been taking up a lot of space on your drive that you haven't used in a long time and now is probably a good time to delete them, move on and reclaim that space and get it back clean. My Mac x is great for so many things. It's going to keep your Mac safe and secure it's going to keep it optimized kind of running like it's fresh out of the box, like you, just got it from the Apple Store, and it's also going to allow you to do a lot of things that you just can't do on Mac OS X itself, for example, deleting an app is not as simple as dragging it to the trash. There are oftentimes remnants and other parts that you can't delete without knowing what to do. Luckily, with cleanmymacx, you can select the app or apps you want to remove and with one click, delete the app and get rid of all the files associated with it super easily.

So whether you want to prepare for that new iPhone, you want to clear up some space on your drive or just make your Mac safe, secure and make it feel like it's fresh and new again right out of the box. There is no better time than right now to check out clean my Mac x, so check out all it can do and learn more for yourself at the link down below beyond that. There is also the addition of the LIDAR scanner on the new 12 pro, and this is where it gets a little complicated, because personally, I think that there is a much bigger play here for apple. I think this is a small piece in a bigger puzzle that is going to be revealed sometime down the road, maybe the next couple of years, because I think they really didn't give a real, clear justification as to why it's on the phone and why they're putting the scanner in hundreds of millions of new devices. I think there's something more to this, we'll see later on, but for right now that LIDAR scanner is going to give you the following: better autofocus uh, substantially better, autofocus in low light and also uh low light portrait shots as well as all the stuff you could do with augmented reality.

Stuff uh photo video effects stuff like that is going to be improved on here as well. I think that there is more to this LIDAR story, but for right now. That is what it's going to give you uh, maybe if you're into augmented reality, and you like to scan, you know, objects in the real world and turn them into 3d, or you know different effects and stuff. Like that, the LIDAR scanner is, you know, cool. To have again, it's going to give you a little more versatility with you know: low light portrait, shots and stuff like that, though, I really don't think the LIDAR is a make or break uh decision maker for many people, it's kind of cool.

It's a nice addition to have, though again, I really think it's going to be a bigger deal kind of uh down the road for apple, maybe kind of like the u1, where it's in the iPhone and they kind of make a explanation as to why it's there and kind of make its case. But it's going to be a bigger deal. The more devices come out and the larger and more developed the Apple ecosystem gets over the next couple of years, you're also going to get apple pro raw. So if you take a lot of photos on your iPhone, you want the most flexibility in post-processing, then that raw feature set is super nice to have. That is only on the 12 pro.

Also, to clear up some confusion. You can actually shoot Dolby Vision, HDR video on both ends of iPhones, the 12 series and the 12 pro, though you can shoot, 60 frames, Dolby, vision, HDR on the pro and only 30 on the 12. So if you like to shoot a lot of videos on your phone, and you want that Dolby Vision, HDR uh, you can, you know, shoot it on both phones, but if you want the absolute most versatility, then you're probably going to want to go with the pro to shoot at 60 frames per second again. This is not a huge deal. I think this is we're getting more and more into a subcategory of people who really shoot a lot of photos and videos and uh where this versatility really matters.

But it's a difference. I want to make sure you guys are well aware of one of the things that's most impressive about both phones and something I got to give apple credit for is that both of these phones have the a14 bionic processor. This is, as apple likes to stress the most powerful, the most capable the most efficient processor they have ever put uh in the iPhone ever and both phones are gonna, be able to take full advantage of that. You're going to have the same power and the same functionality and the same efficiency in both phones. So if you want to shoot a lot of photos and videos and edit them on your phone or play a bunch of games, you're multitasking, I mean there's not going to be any slow down any hesitation.

Both these phones are going to be plenty capable and plenty powerful, though there is a difference in ram we're learning that the iPhone 12 series will have four and the iPhone 12 Pro will have six. We saw four gigs in the pro series last year and again having an 11 pro. I noticed no slowdown, no sluggishness, no issues by any means, so I think that the extra headroom with ram is going to help with some pro specific features like apple pro raw and LIDAR and stuff like that um. I wouldn't put too much stock into this, though. If you do want the most power and performance- and you want those extra two gigs of ram to go up to six- then the 12 pro is going to be the way to go.

For that, though, I wouldn't worry too much at all about performance on the 12 is going to be spectacular. They've both got the same water resistance up to six meters for 30 minutes. They've both got the same 5g capability uh. Furthermore, they both got mag safe. I mean again, there is more in common with the pro series and the regular series than there ever has been before the differences are so small.

That again, I think the 12 is just the simple answer. Definitely the way to go, and you have to make a case to justify why you need to step up for the pro. I also want to quickly touch on battery life, because these phones have the same screen size and the same functionality and the same form factor uh chances. Are they have the exact same battery inside there as well? We don't know this, and we won't be able to test until we actually, you know, get our hands on one or someone else disassembles and sees what the actual William hour capacity is with these batteries. But I'm going to suspect and make an educated guess that battery life on these phones will be pretty much exactly the same on the 12 and the 12 pro same screen size same processor, very minor differences.

I think you're going to get excellent battery life, no matter which phone you decide to pick up. Honestly. I think what it really comes down to is this: if you want the absolute most versatility of a camera in an iPhone, then you're going to want to go with the pro. If LIDAR is important to you, and you see the possibilities of it now and in the future, go with the pro. If you want a more premium feeling iPhone with better materials, go with the pro.

If you can find a way to justify that price difference, and you see a value with that phone, then that's going to be the phone for you, but if you're kind of on the fence, if you don't really care about the telephoto lens, you don't care about the build materials. You don't care about the LIDAR scanner. You just want a great phone that can you know, do a lot of things. Take great photos and videos is plenty fast plenty capable, and even if you want to bump up the storage a bit and still save some money, then the 12 is going to be a great way to go. If you care about cameras, go with the pro, if not save the money go with the 12, and you will be very, very happy.

So what do you guys think 12 or 12 pro? Which one are you picking up or are you going to wait for the mini or the pro max? Personally, I ordered a 12 pro. I think that's going to be the way to go, and I will report back with my review and findings once these phones finally launch. But in the meantime let me know what you guys think and which one you're picking up down in the comments below. As always. Thank you guys so much for watching.

I am Robert Rosenbaum from the apple circle and I will see you in the next one. You.
