iPadOS 14 on Pad Air 2: SPEED TESTS with cleared RAM and after reboot By Fjordstrøm Travel & Tech

Hi everyone, it's frustrate iPad s14, is out now, and it officially supports a whole range of devices from the 2020 iPad Air 4, with the a14 chip to the iPad Air 2 with the a8x chip from 2014. , I'm wondering now how well this will perform in my yearly speed test. This speed test will consist of 4 parts. We'll start with the geek bench test, then followed by a real-time speed test. Then a boot up, speed, test and finally, we'll be exporting a video project in suffusion I'll, be comparing this speed test side by side with my speed test from last year and the year before, opening the same apps and even exporting the same video projects. Here we go now before we continue.

This is running iPad, OS 14.0, so the official release, um and everything was close. Everything here there are no apps running in the background. Now, let's start with the geek bench test. Now I know this geek bench 5 already, but if you want to compare this with the previous two versions, I will still run geek bench 4 instead.

So let me start here with geek bench 4. It's running iPad is 14, as I said the a8x chip just a reminder. It only has 2 gigabytes of ram, and it has a 1.5 gigahertz processor. So let's have a look now at the CPU benchmark test all right here we are, so it has a multi-core score of 4457 and a single core score of 1824. Now we can compare to the past few years and if you look here, the multicore score and the single core scores from last year were slightly higher back in 2018.

It was also just slightly higher, but it is higher now compared to in 2017, apparently so that has gone up. I think this was running iOS 11 back then, so the scores were clearly much lower before compared to now. So you could say it's somehow similar to last year, but still way better than a few years ago. All right now, let's start with the app speed test in this speed test. I'll open social media apps, followed by Spotify, YouTube and file zap, then productivity apps, followed by photo editing, apps one game which is asphalt, 9, which I've been opening in my past two speed tests as well and then ending with safari the fusion I'll be opening in my next part of the speed test in the end I'll, be opening each app again and see which apps need to reload and uh, which not, so I'm curious about that, and I just, just decided now to also reboot my iPad just to really clear everything off.

So this is as clear as my speed test can get so, let's get started. So! Oh, you! So so do so, okay, seven minutes and 42 seconds. It is actually quite long much longer than usual, but it's mainly because of asphalt, 9, which took very long to load and cleared out the ram for some apps. Now, in my second speed test, which I did just now actually uh, which I'm not going to show you now, it even took longer eight minutes and a bit, and it's again because of asphalt, asphalt.9 then also cleared the ram for all the apps, so it really depends on yeah on the moment I think, or on what you're exactly doing, although I did exactly the same, but asphalt 9, a very big app can just clear out your whole ram. Keep in mind.

This is two gigabytes of ram that is in here. So of course, it yeah there's a big chance that your ram will be cleared after a while or that some apps will have to reload, but I think that's something that we're used to after a while. Okay next is a boot up, speed test. Let's turn it on and see how long it takes to boot. Okay, that took 30 seconds to boot, up which is longer than an iOS 13 or iPad s13 there.

It took 19 seconds to boot up the iPad now just for information. All the apps were closed before I rebooted the iPad, so it is with the minimal time 30 seconds to boot. Up the iPad Air 2 on iPad is 14. All right now, it's time for the video export test in suffusion, and this here is a project that I made two years ago, which is also a speed test with multiple layers, mainly video here. These are two overlapping video layers and, of course, also some audio layers as well.

Nine-minute video in full HD, 30 frames per second, so very basic. Okay, now we're going to export this video at 1080p at 30 frames per second and standard quality of 20 megabits per second. I must say that the standard quality before was 24 megabits per second, so this might be slightly faster. Let's have a look, and I'll now export. It right so took eight minutes to export this video, which is actually still much longer than last year, and the year before in iPad is 13.

It took 6 minutes and 13 seconds and iOS 12. Furthermore, it took 5 minutes and 30 seconds, so it does take substantially longer. Now it is the same video file, the same videos over here and everything is exactly the same and all the apps. In the background are closed. I even did the speed test twice by the way and I still get the same result, eight minutes and above, so that is something you have to keep in mind if you're somebody who has an iPad Air 2, and you have no plans of upgrading, or you don't have the budget right now for upgrading, and you're very reliant on suffusion for exporting videos, just keep in mind that this update to iPad s14 will make render times much longer or at least for the amount that you've seen in this video okay.

So this is the end of the speed test. Now, what is our conclusion? Well, in all tests, actually everything just takes longer exporting took longer. Booting up took longer opening some apps took longer than last year and the year before, um, it's clear also that iOS 12 was actually the best version for this iPad. If you haven't updated yet from iOS 12, then you might consider not upgrading but is of course the thing about updates is that you get the latest security, so iPad of s14 is definitely more secure than iOS 12 right now, um when it comes to features also, iPod s14 has more features than iOS 12. , so you'd have to take everything consideration if you're going to upgrade now, if you're currently running iPadOS 13.7, I think it's okay to upgrade. The difference, won't be that huge compared to if you're coming from iOS 12.

If you find iPadOS, 13 already quite slow, then you might want to hold off and wait until future updates. Uh, you never know. The next update might be a bit better for the iPad Air 2. Now for me personally, I always like the latest features and the latest updates. I also want to have a secure iPad, so that's why I always upgrade to the latest version of iPadOS.
