Google Pixel 5 Review - Camera, Battery Life, Gaming PUBG, Fortnite Test

Hi, it's john from android Alex, and today I'm going to be doing a quick review of the Google Pixel 5. I want to split this review up into separate sections just to make it easier for people to jump to exactly what they want to see, so we're going to go through. What's in the box, the phone build and its specs the battery life, the cameras, gaming and any negatives I've found, so I've been using this phone for nearly two weeks now. So I think I've got a good grasp as to what it'd be like to use as your permanent phone. So let's get into the review and see how it fares. Okay, so this is what is inside the box.

You get an 18 watt, fast charger. You get an USB c to USB c cable and an USB c to USB an adapter. That's if you want to transfer data quickly from your old phone. You also get a little pamphlet here, quick start guide and a sim eject tool. Obviously the main thing you get in the box is the Google Pixel 5 itself.

So this has a Qualcomm snapdragon, 765 g processor, with an arena 620 GPU inside it has 120 gigs of UFS 2.1 internal storage with eight gigs of ram, that's the same on both models or both colors of the phone at least, and it also has a 4080mah battery which supports 18 watt fast charging, as they call it.12 volt wireless and 5 watt reverse charging. The phone itself weighs 151 grams. It has a nice 6 inches, 90hz OLED display, which runs at 1080 by 2340 and sports gorilla glass 6. On the back of the phone, we have a 12, megapixel, f, 1.7 camera with is 16, megapixel, f, 2.2 ult wide, and that is capable of 60 frames per second in a 4k resolution. Now the front camera on the phone is an 8 megapixel, f 2.0, which is capable at 1080p and 30 frames per second video recording. So when I first got the phone out of the box, I was really impressed with the size and weight of it.

It's really nice to go back to a phone. That's you know, even though it's six-inch screen still, you can easily grip. It in your hand- and you don't feel like you're carrying around a brick such as my s20 ultra, which is really heavy. This coming in 151 grams is really nice, and it makes a nice change. So we look at the design of the phone itself.

We have the front facing eight megapixel cameras. We went over before we have an under display speaker in the top here, which is used for your stereo sound, and your voice calls on the right hand, side of the phone. Furthermore, we have the volume rocker and the power button. On the left-hand side, we just have the sim tray here. This is a single sim, but it does support ENIM on the bottom of the phone.

We have an USB c port, and we have a single downward facing speaker on the left-hand side of the phone. We have another cutout, but that is just for the microphone piece. So, on the back of the phone, we have a nice shiny, google logo. There we have the rear, fingerprint scanner, and we have the dual camera setup led flash and microphone there on the top of the phone. We just have the ambient mic, and that is all there is to it.

So this runs android 11, which is google's the latest android operating system and equipped with the 765g Qualcomm snapdragon processor. I've found it really speedy, quite nippy. You know you don't notice any slowdown, particularly when you're using the phone compared to anything else, so I've been really impressed with it. So far, and the first thing I want to talk about is the battery life, because that is one of the things that has probably impressed me the most, so the battery life of this phone is really impressive. I was a bit worried that it was only a four thousand eighty million pound battery, but that equipped with the 765g processor, I think it's been really efficient, and I've easily managed to get.

You know: good six and a half to seven hours, seven and a half hours sometimes screen time from the phone. So if you have a user, you can expect this to last a day quite easily. If you're a light user, you can probably get a day and a half, maybe two days out of it. Okay, next up we're going to move on to the cameras. So, first, I want to just say that the front facing camera is probably the weakest point of the camera setup on this phone.

It is noticeably grainy and not very good in lower light conditions, which is a bit of a shame really, because I do a lot of video calling- and that is something which has been noticed on the other end of the call that it has gone. You know from a decent picture to a grainy picture in comparison to my s20 ultra, so the weakest point of this whole phone, I would say, is the front-facing camera now the rear-facing camera have is a different story and the photos and videos I've gotten from this are absolutely fantastic. I've been really impressed with the camera setup here, and I do prefer this to the s20 ultra camera setup, which has quite a narrow depth of field, and I prefer just having things in focus, and you know some of the shots which I'm going to put on the screen now are just absolutely breathtaking, and I know that this is an old camera module which has been used in several pixels now, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it, and this is not broken at all. So you can even see in some night shots here that the quality is still perfect, so in low light conditions, it's still, you know, got the power in the AI to actually bring out some fantastic shots. The video footage as well has been perfect and yeah.

Overall, I've been extremely impressed with the rear facing camera, so here I'm just shooting in 4k at 30 frames per second, and just hope. You get an idea as to how good the speaker is on this phone. You should be able to hear some sounds of leaves crunching under my feet without being picked up. Hopefully, as you can see, even though it's freezing cold outside today, it's quite nice and sunny still, so that's quite nice, and I will switch over to the front-facing camera now, and we'll just see how that compares okay, so I've now switched over to the front-facing camera, and I'm recording the highest resolution possible. So hopefully the quality is good.

You can see its plenty of sun out today, so we should be able to get a good picture, hopefully, but yeah. So far. As far as I can tell the front facing camera on the Google Pixel 5 is certainly one of the weaker points of the phone seems a bit grainy in low light conditions, even marginal light conditions, it seems, seems a bit grainy in comparison to what I've seen on Samsung's phones. So hopefully, in this bright light, it's going to look: okay, okay, I'm just going to do a bit of video recording with the ultrawide lens as well as I almost forgot to do so. So it's not the biggest ultra-wide lens I've ever seen, but it's still nice to have on the phone nowadays when you want to capture more in your pictures or videos.

Okay. So, let's move on to gaming now- and here we have cod mobile- this is running with high graphics, quality and max frame rate. As you can see, it's nice and smooth- I haven't, got any problems here. Apart from my lack of skill, and next up is Fortnite here. This runs at 30 frames per second on epic settings.

There's no option for 60 frames per second at the moment, but that could be added in a future update and next up we have gantry impact. Now this is quite a large open world. So there are a few stutters every now and again, when you're sort of looking around the environment, but overall it's its more than playable um and last but not least, we have PUBG here. This is running with smooth graphics and ultra frame rate, the maximum graphics quality it does support on the pixel 5 currently is HD with high frame rate. You cannot select HDR, ultra HD or UHD.

Hopefully, that will be added in a future update. So overall personally, I've had absolutely no problems at all gaming on the pixel 5. It's not going to be your. You know dedicated gaming phones, but it can run anything that you throw at it. Okay, so I just want to talk about some negatives with this phone.

So we have this single downwards facing speaker here, which sounds okay on its own, but mixed in with the under screen speaker at the top. Here it doesn't do a great job of representing sound, so the speaker does get quite loud, but what you'll find is that the speaker under the screen is pretty much useless. If we cover up the bottom speaker here, we can listen to what the inner speaker here behind the screen sounds like routines, and it's actually still possible to get that on to an older phone. So here I have my s8. I've got a copy of the Samsung, so you can hear it's quite muffled and that's not only you know during playback of videos and other bits, but it's also when you're on a phone call as well.

So I've noticed that whilst in a phone call it does sound muffled and if it's on the maximum volume it actually sort of vibrates the glass a bit, and it feels well, you can sort of feel the vibration on your ear, so this top speaker under the glass, whilst a nice idea to keep the phone. You know nice and neat is actually not the best idea they could have done. I'd rather have a little thin speak at the top here, which would have been a much better idea. Other than that. I have noticed some software glitches every now and again now this is android 11.

So it is the latest software version and would do so. Some apps will obviously glitch a bit when they're not fully optimized for it yet, but I have noticed a few bits and pieces such as WhatsApp not being fully optimized for this stone yet, and that is a bit annoying. It does glitch every now and again, but on the whole android 11 has worked really well, and it's very battery efficient and very slick and smooth okay. One of the other annoyances I have with this phone is the fact that it doesn't have a separate ring and notification volume setting. You cannot set a separate notification volume from your ringtone, which is one of the most frustrating and idiotic things I can think of in a phone nowadays I mean, I know, I'm not the only person in the world who would rather have a separate ringtone volume to the notification volume.

I'd rather have a nice loud ringtone. So I know when someone's ringing me, because that's probably going to be quite important with a notification tone. It doesn't need to be that loud because you know it's a notification, and I'll get to it whenever I can. So that is one of the most annoying things about this phone. Last but not least, I'm just going to go over the rear, fingerprint scanner.

Now this is very quick, and it's obviously fine, whilst you're holding your phone like this, but let's be honest, whoever holds their phone like this. No one most people, myself included, will hold their phone like this. Where you've got your little finger here at the bottom, supporting the bottom of the phone, so you can scroll, you know tap on thing, go back and forth! Use your home gestures, do all those bits and pieces which are all very nice and works very well. So now, if you open an app which requires fingerprint recognition, you've now got to stretch your finger up, and it is extremely uncomfortable to actually do that, whilst you're holding your phone naturally and relaxed in this position. So if we just turn the phone over again, you can see here.

I've got a stretch up to get onto the fingerprint reader here. So what would have been a much better idea? I believe is that if they had just put the power button here in place of the volume, maybe move that up here power down there with a fingerprint scanner, then you could have easily just pressed on the fingerprint scanner whenever you needed to you, wouldn't need to move your hand whatsoever. So to be fair, those are my only gripes of the phone other than that. I really love it and if it wasn't for these few little things such as the front-facing camera being a bit poor, the fingerprint scanner being a bit funny and, of course, the notification volume not being able to be separated from the ringtone volume, then I would quite happily replace my s20 ultra with the Google Pixel 5. So the positives of the phone are the battery life.

The rear-facing cameras are absolutely fantastic, and overall usability of the phone is brilliant. The size, the weight- it's all very, very nice, there's just those few niggles which would stop me from buying this phone myself. So I hope you enjoyed this video.
