Google Pixel 4a Emulation Test - Amazing Performance! Dolphin, PPSSPP, Redream, Citra

Hey, what's going on everybody, it's eta, prime back here again today we're going to be taking a look at the emulation performance of the all-new Google Pixel 4a. This is a new offering from Google coming in at 349, but ever since this was announced, I've had a lot of people asking me to test out some emulators on this device. So that's exactly what we're going to be doing in this video we'll be testing out some ps1, some n64, some dream cast PSP we'll go with some 3ds and even some game cube and Wii to see how this thing performs, but before we jump right into it, I do want to go over the basic specs and keep in mind. I will have a full review coming up in the next couple of days, so definitely keep an eye on the channel. Now, there's a lot more to this device than the specs you're going to see here, but I just wanted to go over the basic performance specs. So for the CPU we have the snapdragon 730.

This is an eight core processor, with six high efficient a55 cores running at 1.8 and two more powerful a76 cores running at 2.2 for the GPU we have the Arduino 618 six gigs of LP ddr4x ram, 128 gigabytes of internal storage and a 5.81 OLED display at 1080 by 2340. Now on my channel, I test a lot of these android devices with snapdragon CPUs and one that I've kind of stayed away from was the 730, and only because I wanted to wait for the Pixel 4a. There are and have been devices on the market with the snapdragon 730 from Xiaomi, but I've stayed away from because I knew the Pixel 4a was coming, and this is the one I was really looking forward to so without further ado. Let's go ahead and jump right into some emulation. First up we'll have some ps1 and keep in mind.

I am using an Xbox One controller connected over Bluetooth. So for each one of these games you're going to see running in this video, I will have the name of the system, the name of the emulator and, if I'm upscaled or not, and the name of the game plus, if we take a look at the phone screen itself, I'll have the fps listed. So obviously we have PlayStation 1 here using retro arch with the PC so rearm core, and this is gran tourism 2. We're at 60fps. It's running it at full speed.

Everything feels great I'm using that Xbox One controller connected over Bluetooth and going into this I was 100 sure that we'd be able to do ps1 games at full speed, but I still wanted to test one of the harder ones to run which is bloody, roar 2. So here we are still using the same emulator and core, and it's running it perfectly fine. All right! Next up we have some n64 using Lupin, 64 plus FM, I'm upscaled to 960x720 daddy Kong racing, really nice frame rate. Here I also tested one of the harder ones to run, which is golden eye 007, and it also ran just as well. So n64 emulation on the Pixel 4a is good to last.

Go. Can it up a notch to dream cast using the red ream emulator, I'm upscaled to 1440p sonic adventure, 2 you're going to have no issues whatsoever on the Pixel 4a using the red ream emulator as long as the game is compatible with the emulator itself is. Ah, fight is here. We have PSP using pass taken 6 upscale to 4x no frame skip no hacks. It's just running at full speed.

Fps is in the top right hand corner now, as you can see, we're getting awesome performance with PSP here being able to upscale. The 4x is absolutely amazing, but we can't do 4x with every single game. There are some really hard games to run like midnight, club, 3 and the god of war games, but it does run them at full speed.2X resolution no frame skip no hacks. This is midnight club three one of the really hard ones to run. In my experience, this is actually harder to run than the god of war games, but we're getting 60 here at 2x.

I've tested OpenGL and Vulcan and both of them do run these games at full speed, but I'm using Vulcan here in all the tests. You see foreign wow, so we're going to take it up quite a bit here to game cube using the dolphin emulator, I'm using the Vulcan back in here, soul, caliber 2, the Pixel 4a is definitely trucking through this, but it doesn't mean that it's going to run every single game cube game at full speed. There are some that are just really hard to run like automotive and f-zero go, and this little device just can't handle it. But there are a ton of great games that will be fully playable with the dolphin emulator on the Pixel 4a moving over to wind water. This game ran at 30 fps on the original game cube hardware, and we're hitting 30fps with the official version of dolphin and the Vulcan back in.

I was actually really surprised to see this device run: soul, caliber, 2 and wind water this. Well. It's pretty amazing that the snapdragon 720 can do this now, keep in mind. It's not going to run every single game cube at full speed, but a lot of the classics will be fully playable. If you want something to run most games at full speed on android you'd have to go with something with a snapdragon, 855, 865 or 865 plus and finally for game cube.

We have Mario sunshine. I've got past the tutorial stage, and this is a lot harder to run on these android devices. Unfortunately, with the official version of dolphin from their website, I just wasn't able to run this at full speed. It got around 28 with Vulcan or OpenGL, so I went back, and I tested dolphin mm. It hasn't been updated in a while, but performance here with Mario sunshine is absolutely amazing.

We're getting full speed and again this natively ran at 30fps on the original game cube. So since we had decent performance with the dolphin emulator, I figured we'd test out Ciara the 3ds emulator. You can actually pick this up from the Google Play Store now when it's running fine everything's, pretty good we're getting full speed here with Kirby, but we have a lot of shader cache issues going on. As you can see, we got those freeze, ups and those sound stutters. It doesn't happen with every single game, but a lot of the games that I tested did have this issue, and I've actually run into this issue on higher end chips before, and it really comes down to the emulator itself.

They definitely need some more optimizations, but it's still absolutely amazing to see 3ds running on android, but there was one game that I had perfect luck with. We still got those sound interruptions, but overall it runs perfect on this device and that's Mario Kart 7. So in the end, the Pixel 4a is an awesome performer when it comes to emulation. I'm super surprised that this little device is able to run the games that we just ran at full speed and upscaled, like that, it's a great option. Now it's a cheaper phone at 349 dollars, but you're going to get that quality of a pixel phone and guaranteed updates for android.

Like I mentioned, I will have a full review coming up on this device in the next couple of days and, if there's anything you want to see running on this, just let me know in the comments below I just personally want to spend more time with it. This is going to be my daily driver for a little while just so, I can get a feel for how the Pixel 4a really performs, but that's it for this one. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below and like always thanks for watching you.
