Google Pixel 2 XL In Late 2020! (Still Worth It?) (Review)

Welcome back everyone time to look at the Google Pixel 2 XL and see pretty much how it holds up in the later part of 2020. Now I will tell you if you have all the money in the world. Please pick up a Google Pixel 5 or a galaxy s20 or something these phones are great phones, but slowly and surely- and I think sooner than later- they're probably going to be more outdated than you think, but with something like the Google Pixel 2 XL. What's fascinating about it is that the design language of it and even the software and the experience overall is still astounding, and I will tell you if you're on an extreme budget, the Google Pixel 2 XL is actually a pretty decent pickup for a lot of people. Now pricing wise this thing when it first came out it costed, not a lot, but you know dirt, but definitely a lot more than what it is now you can pick up this thing on Amazon for about 170, definitely less than 200, and that's a pretty impressive price tag to pay for a device like this again. If you have more money, then get a better phone, but this thing you know the fact that it came out in 2017 is a three-year-old device is actually extremely impressive.

In my opinion- and I actually think more times than not, this thing is more surprising than like. You know unsurprising, in my opinion, now on the front of the Google Pixel 2 XL. First, if you guys aren't familiar with pixel lineup, it's pretty much google's own lineup of devices, so they can usually collaborate with like some other manufacturer, and they help develop these type of phones, their stock android. They don't have any crazy features or anything, but the software experience is always probably one of the best. It's probably up there with oxygen OS, and it's definitely I mean this is what all androids are based off of is stock android, and this is what this phone runs at now with the pixel 2 XL.

You have that six inch, poled display on the front. It's 1440p, and I can't hype this panel up and up you know it doesn't have a refresh rate, that's higher than 60 hertz. So we don't have that 90 or 120 or refresh rate or anything, but I think for a majority of people out there. This is still more than capable enough of being. You know someone's best panel, you know at the time and because it doesn't have a crazy amount of bezel like it has a little of bezel for sure, but it's not crazy.

It's not like the original pixel or anything. So I think it still looks pretty timeless for sure, and it even has a front facing speaker which is cool too. So there is some use case for that specific bezel on the front, so again not the best looking phone ever, but I still think it looks better than the predecessor, and it even looks better than the successor, which is the pixel 3 XL, so for sure thumbs up for me, my books for that panel. Now you do have USB type c on the bottom and on the back, you have this kind of like polycarbonate finish with a glass texture up top, it may actually be glass. You also have the fingerprint sensor as well.

Now you have the power button volume button all that stuff, and I will tell you the way this phone feels in the hand. It definitely doesn't feel cheap. It definitely doesn't feel like the most premium device, so it kind of fits in that kind of like middle ground. You know what I mean I feel like. The display is good, but it just doesn't feel that great when you're, like you're, doing things with it- and I don't know the best way to describe it, but it's definitely a good performing phone.

You know in terms of the way it feels great. It looks great, but I'll definitely tell you. There are some weird things about it like when you have a phone nowadays, like that's all glass on the even on the back, and you have the frosted glass back and stuff that type of phone feels so much more premium. In my opinion versus something like this, but again for less than 200. I can't really complain now you do have that single camera setup on the back as well, and it's a 12.2, megapixel wide angle lens- and I said this before, and I'll say it again: google at that time in 2017, was making probably one of the best. You know, cameras of that time and for a single camera lens, it's actually pretty impressive.

You know you can do 4k at 30. It's a 12.2 megapixel lens, like I stated you have optical image, stabilization laser autofocus, but you do can only shoot at 4k at 30. Nowadays, we can do 4k at 60. Even the iPhones of that year could do 4k 60. So that's another kind of weird thing: it's like I wish they could take it up a notch.

You know no pun intended, but that's really what they did at that time. So there's really nothing. We can do about it now. On top of that, it is a single camera lens. So you don't have a white ultra-wide sensor.

You don't have a telephoto lens, so that's another! You know it may be a minor thing to some people and it kind of is, but it's also kind of like an annoying thing. Furthermore, you know I wish they could. Furthermore, you know, develop a little of a better camera at that time. They still only do dual camera setups. I wish they could do triple or quad, but I still think for what it is and for this phone the quality is great.

The video quality is pretty good. Of course, it's not the best of every time, but I think for a lot of people out there. It's still okay and if I had to use this camera I'd probably be okay with it, but I think the front camera is probably the bigger deal, the 8 megapixel lens. You can only do 1080p videos on that. Nowadays, we can do 4k at 60 on it.

So that's another kind of big thing. If you're somebody who's, you know filming a lot of videos on their front camera or, if you're, making a lot of tick, rocks or snap chats, or you're. You know call video calling a lot of people you're, probably going to notice that this camera quality isn't as great as something like a Samsung Galaxy, s20 plus, so that's probably where the biggest differentiating factors come from, but I still think for this device. It's totally okay for the time being so in terms of the camera and in terms of the outside, that pretty much covers it up now, the software wise. This is the best advantage of this device.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. The software of this phone is amazing. It's stock android. It has android 11. Now, sadly, it's probably it's the last stock version of android, but I will tell you, even if it stopped android 11, that's still an perfect version of android to be stopping at because it's so strong has a lot of features, and it's not even outdated, because android 11 is still like the newest version of android, but taking it up a notch again.

The best thing about the pixel line app is because of its stock android. These phones are so easy to be. You know modded and rooted and customized that you can just find a custom ROM for this device and just run with it there's so many custom ROMs out. For this thing, it's not even funny, so you can easily just go and type in like any customer. You can just type in pixel 2, excel custom ROM for android 12, 13, 15 16 in the future, and I guarantee you there will probably be custom ROMs available for this thing and, as I said before, that's a huge asset for these devices.

You know having an older phone like this that has that type of capability of still getting software support one way or another is a huge asset for sure. The pixel 2 XL wins a lot in the software department. It's already stock android, but on top of that you can be custom ROM it and add even more versions of software on it, which is really, really impressive. So in terms of software that pretty much covers it up now hitting on the performance. This thing has that Qualcomm snapdragon 835 chipsets an arena, 540, GPU and four gigabytes of ram on each model.

Now, there's no expandable storage, so this thing only tops out at 128 gigs, which kind of sucks a little. But what I can tell you in terms of the performances is that this phone's performance is surprisingly good. Still, you know, I will say it's not the best in the world. You know, I don't want to think and tell you guys it's the best on the order anything, but for sure it gets the job done, it's a very smooth performing device. Now I wish it did kind of have like a 120 hertz refresh rate because I feel like even then it wouldn't make this phone feel that much smoother.

I think the smoothness factor is there, but I think when you like click on an app and expect it to open in the loading speeds of certain apps, it is kind of outdated, and I think recently I actually did a speed comparison between this phone and like an iOS 14 phones, and I saw that pretty much. It just wasn't, keeping up quite well with other manufacturers like with Samsung and iPhones and one pluses, but that's because this is a three-year-old device. You know it's expected if this thing was the latest and greatest device and of course, there'd be a problem, but because this thing is an older device, and it has an older chipset, I totally think it's okay. I don't think it's that big of a problem again like if it was a problem like you would still kind of have to give it some slack, because it's a three-year-old device, but whatever you're gonna, do with it. Whether you're trying to play super intensive games, whether you're, trying to you know just kind of multitask, some apps here and there, and all that you're probably going to be okay, but don't expect it to be.

You know a crazy good performing device still because when you compare this type of phone to even like a Galaxy S10 or even like a pixel 5 or pixel 4 you're not really going to be getting that top tier performance that this phone kind of had at the time so 2017 this phone's performance was great, but nowadays, it's probably not as good as you guys might expect it to be so in terms of performance that pretty much covers it up now, winning it off with the battery life. This thing has a 3520 million power battery and in terms of battery I mean that's, not a bad. You know size battery, but this thing has degraded over time so that battery size is not at 35 20 anymore. It's probably gone down, but on top of that I will tell you. I think this device had a battery problem when it first came out, but I think it's been fixed now, but I've had pretty decent battery life on this thing you know standby time is expected.

It's very average, though it's not anything that I would brag over, but it's like very, very average. That's like kind of like the best way I can put it so in terms of battery life, it's more average than that and to kind of sum up this video and to answer the question: is the Google Pixel 2 XL still worth it in the later part of 2020? What I'll tell you is that I think the pixel 2 XL, if you're on a budget can be a really decent phone. It's probably one of the best budget phones out there, but I will tell you if you even have a little more money to spend, I would probably recommend picking up like a Google, pixel, 3 or Galaxy S10, or something like that, like those phones, can take you a lot further, but with the pixel 2 XL you're, getting a beautiful display. Still on the front. You know that panel is probably one of its biggest assets, even though it doesn't feel like the best phone compared to nowadays.

It still feels like a perfect phone, especially with that big 1440p display. That's an OLED panel software support. This thing is going to be supported for a very long time. Custom ROM, wise native support- I mean it's pretty much done. I think it may get android 12.

I don't know it's, probably not. If google switches out their layout a little, then maybe, but this thing software support custom ROMs are out there. I would recommend just custom roaming this thing like crazy. Now, if you're a heavy performing person, you need a lot of apps in the background, all that stuff, that's where this phone may kind of you know start to slow down in and that's why I'm telling people like you know, I recommend picking up a Galaxy S10 or something like that. If you have the money, but if you're not- and if you just need something to kind of get the time by, or you need a side device, then the performance of this one, I think, is still going to be okay for the most part, the camera of this thing is still perfect as well.

I mean this thing has a perfect camera setup. You know that single camera lens on the back still gets the job done. Even that front. Camera is okay for the most part, and the battery life on this thing is good enough. If you get one that has a pretty good size battery, and it's still like you know, it hasn't degraded a lot, then I think it's still going to be fine for a lot of people and for that price tag, that's less than 200.

You can't really go wrong with it but, like I said, don't expect to buy this phone and have it to be like the best performing phone ever, and you know blow your socks off and stuff because, most probably it's not going to happen, but I think for the most part, it will definitely get the job done for sure so in terms of the pixel 2 XL and how it holds up in the later part of 2020. That really pretty much covers it up. If you guys have any other questions or anything. Let me know in the comment section as well hit the like button.
