It’s an extension of my style. I can express who I am. It’s hip, it’s cool. Just fold! It’s built to last. My name is Bosoon Kang, and I lead the Next Generation Product Design Group, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is ultra-compact when folded, yet unfolds to the size of a conventional smartphone.

The device’s unique compact design offers impressive one-handed functionality that is also highly fashionable. It’s a tool that users can use to express themselves. Hello, my name is Hwanju Jeon, and I’m in charge of CMF (color, material, finish) design for Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. We chose a diverse set of colors to appeal to a wider set of consumers. At launch, we will offer phantom black, green, lavender, and cream; for online, pink, white, and gray.

Online exclusives are in two-tone combinations with pink/gray/white colors on the black metal frame. From a design perspective, we combined the screen and camera module into a single black area in order to give the device a simpler look. Aside from the visual updates, we also tried to give a sense of softness in the device’s touch. To that end, we focused on the smallest of details, such as the shape and size of the device, path of light at reflection, and many other factors. As you can see here, we designed two divided sections in one glass.

First, we carved the glass, and then applied either a glossy or matte finish on the cut. Then, we added color contrast. Applying these three different methods into a single line was a difficult task. We are offering an array of trendy cases in a variety of colors so I hope users enjoy customizing their look with them. We made multiple prototypes to test the look-and-feel of each potential design and conducted a thorough study for more than a year to make this single device.

We created many model prototypes differing in width and length and then tested their comfort and usability. I see Galaxy Z Flip3 5G as a blank canvas for users to decorate as they want. I am excited and thrilled to see how users will create cultures of their own through this new iconic device. We design to impress users even with the smallest details. We constantly ask ourselves, “how will users feel when holding and seeing the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G for the first time?”.

I hope this could be conveyed through the completeness of our design, and that is precisely the reason why we obsessed over every single detail. Hello, my name is Minsoo Kwon, and I lead the wallpaper team, a core group within the UX team. We approached it as a fashionable icon. It is a trendy smartphone, which can be seen as a fashion item and a mobile device at once. We focused on finding graphics that matched the front design.

We have been thinking a lot about how users can utilize the display as a way to express themselves. Hi, my name is Hyewon Seo from the Flagship Product Planning Group. The 1.9-inch Cover Screen brings balance to the design and usability. The Cover Screen is four times bigger than before. You can check the list of notifications by swiping the larger Cover Screen without opening the device.

If you want to get more details, you can click Open app on the notification. I think this experience of continuity to the Main Screen adds usability that is even more convenient. The Cover Screen offers various features. Swipe right to check notification, swipe left to widgets, swipe down to get to Quick setting and swipe up to use Samsung Pay. We preloaded eight native apps as the default, so users can turn on and off and arrange these apps to their needs.

The device provides a variety of ways to customize the Cover Screen so you can express yourself. You can customize the clock style, which can be synced with your Galaxy Watch4. Not only are you just looking at the clock, but you can also enjoy the fun and satisfying moment as the color and character keeps changing as you turn/off the clock. Aside from the clock style, you can also customize the color and background image of the clock to express yourself. Now I will walk you through the recommended use case on customizing the clock style from the Gallery app.

I will choose the smallest and minimal clock. When you open up My Gallery from the background image. You can select up to 15 images. When you complete the setting, you can see that the selected images are rotating as the screen turns on and off. You can also use GIFs, so I think this could be a fun feature where you can test multiple combinations with motion-like pictures and find your ideal custom face.

I think Galaxy Z Flip3 5G will become a new way to express yourself by customizing the clock style to revel individual taste and show off your personality. You can express your style and be more satisfied with your smartphone. I think this defines what the device is really all about.
