Galaxy A72 and A52 - Full Review with Camera Samples (2021) By mobiscrub

The galaxy a series tries to bring flagship level experiences at more affordable prices. So, let's find out in this review just how good the a52 and the a72 really are. Now I spoke about design in a lot of detail in my first impressions. Video the build is all plastic, but I really have no issues with that, because it keeps the weight of the device light and makes one hand use slightly easier, and it's much less prone to scratches cracks, fingerprints and dust and most likely you're, going to put on a case. So does it really matter? Also remember that the phone does not come with any pre-applied screen protector, there's no protective casing or earphones in the box. So those are all additional expenses that you're going to have to incur, but I love the fact that they still have provided for the 3.5 mm headphone jack and you get a hybrid sim tray. So you have the option to have two sim cards or one sim card and one micro SD card to expand storage by up to one terabyte and given that more and more phones are doing away with the headphone jack and the micro SD card slots, these have actually become features to talk about and the series phones have it and this time around they've made it ip67 water and dust resistant.

So you're officially allowed to be more careless with your phone now the matte finish and the colors are really nice. I love that whole minimal, look and feel it's really subtle and kind of classy. That matte texture finish feels perfect to me. It's just so plain and simple and hey. I use the galaxy s21 ultra as my daily driver, and I would totally not mind using this one, or you know carrying it around with me, so yeah, and you can see it's got a very flat profile, which is more reminiscent of iPhones and even the s21 basic version and this time around they've put in stereo speakers, so the top earpiece and the bottom firing speakers both work together.

Simultaneously outputting sound, so this means that you get more volume, better clarity, and you can use Dolby Atmos without actually connecting a pair of earphones, wired or wirelessly. Now, both the phones support, 25 watt superfast charging, but you only get the 25 watt charger with the a72, and you get a 15 watt charger with the a52 in the box and the only two things that I think are missing in the a52 or the a72 when compared to a flagship is number one. No wireless charging and number two: it's got an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is optical, it's not as fast, and they're, not as big, so it's a little slower but hey again, Samsung could have put in those two things increase the cost of the series, but that's the corner. They chose to cut to bring the price down of the series phones. So from a design point of view, I really don't have any significant complaints.

I think the phone's a pretty good package, and now, let's talk about display this time around they've, introduced a higher refresh rate, 90 hertz in the 4g or the LTE variant and 120 hertz in the 5g variant. So using this display the touch experience, it's all super smooth and much improved than in any a series ever launched. It's still super AMOLED, and you get that high resolution FHD plus display, so you can truly enjoy watching full HD movies or content and playing HD games in the best of colors and sharpness. The phone's display is ample bright. I mean I can personally guarantee that you would have no issues outdoors, even in the brightest of days now the display protection that you get on top is gorilla glass, 5 and not gorilla glass Vitus, which is what you get on the s series or the note series phones again.

It's a way to control the cost and keep it manageable. But the real highlight of the display is that high refresh rate 90 hertz on the 4g variants and 120hz on the 5g variants, and again I've said this in my first impressions: video. If you've not used a 90hz or a 120hz display up until now, you're going to absolutely love this one thing I'd like to highlight is that the design- it's not as bezel-less as the flagship phones, so there is definitely more chin at the bottom and bezels on the side as well, and if Samsung could shave those off. I think these phones would look even better and more flagship. Like now.

Moving on to the software, you get android 11, one UI 3.1 right out of the box, so you get all the good stuff secure, folders, Samsung pay screen recorder. You get linked to windows, you get Bixby routine, so you can automate your phone with whatever things you do, the most you get all z feature, and you also get edge panels. You also get edge lighting, so you can customize the colors and the way notifications are shown to you if and when they come, and you get full good, lock support. So you can get all the modules to customize, but what's more important is that Samsung promises that it will give you feature updates for three years and security updates for up to four years. That kind of commitment is pretty hard to come from other manufacturers.

Now what you don't get are things like Samsung, DEX or director's view in the camera mode, but that's because the processor on these phones are incapable of delivering those features and hence they're not there but hey. Otherwise, you get all the cool stuff with one UI 3.1 I've done a video or maybe two or three videos explaining all the good stuff. You can do so. There's a video in the top right corner definitely check those out once you're done with this video all right. Let's talk about performance now, depending upon whether you got the 4g variant or the 5g variant, you'll have either the snapdragon 720 g or the 750g from a daily usage point of view, absolutely no issues the phone works and runs smoothly.

Without any hiccups, there are very subtle stuttering. When, sometimes you know, images are still downloading, but nothing that should bother you much now. I tried playing a couple of games and, although loading the game may have been a bit time-consuming, but once the game is loaded, I absolutely had no issues while playing. I played some games that support high refresh rates and, as you can see, I'm getting close to 89 to 90 fps and that's super smooth gaming, and I'm getting 90 hertz, because it's a 4g variant. If you had the 5g variant, you would get 120 hertz, of course, as long as the game supports those refresh rates as well now here's the thing there are phones from Redmi and Poco that have the same processor, but are half the price of the galaxy a52 and one third, the price of galaxy a72.

But a52 and a72 have things that you know these phones don't, like I said, feature updates and security updates for three to four years, a 90 hertz or a 120 hertz refresh rate display. You get ip67 water and dust resistance, a much better. Looking design, you get one UI 3.1 right out of the box with a lot of features, and you do get. You know that Samsung's reputation and customer service and all of these things put together, come at a cost and that's when the a52 seems a bit more expensive uh than the Redmi or the Poco phones, but hey. If these things that I just talked about are not important to you, then definitely the Redmi and the Poco phones offer much higher value for money if you're, just looking at raw performance or just processor specifications, so yeah definitely go for those.

If all of these things are talked about, don't make that much of a difference to you. But having said that, I really think that Samsung could have improved on the processor piece and instead of using UFS 2.1, they could have employed UFS 3.1, which is a faster internal storage and that would have just pushed the performance to a slightly better level and closer to the flagship level experience that they aim to do with the galaxy a series and while we're on the subject of performance, let's also talk about battery. So you get 4 500 Williams on the a52 and 5 000 Williams on the a72. Honestly, it's just about perfect for a day's usage you'll be left with just about a bit of battery by the end of the day, if you've got moderate, to high use but hey if you're gaming, all day long, or you're streaming Netflix all day long, you're gonna, you're going to exhaust the battery. Much sooner so, of course, you know, depending upon usage battery, how long the battery lasts will vary, but on an average this will easily last you throughout the day, and you're going to have to keep it for charging during the night.

And now, let's talk about camera, so you get a quad camera setup and all the specs are right here in front of you. The two most important upgrades to the camera are number one. You get optical image stabilization in the primary lens, so you get shake free videos and blur free photos and second, you now get 3x telephoto lens. You get lost less optical zoom in the a72, not the a52, but let's check out some samples. First, all of these samples are going to be available for you to download, so the link will be in the description below so go ahead and download all of these.

So you can evaluate uh the photo quality for yourself. Also, these are pictures taken using the primary lens in regular 16 megapixel mode and not the 64 megapixel mode. Of course, there's more detail in that, but for the demonstration purpose I think 16 megapixel mode was quite good. Overall, I really like the quality. I think the colors are quite accurate.

The only issue that I have is with dynamic range, which I think can be improved. So hopefully Samsung can release a few. You know software updates to the uh photo algorithm and improve upon that dynamic range, but mostly, I think it's pretty decent, no issues whatsoever. Just look at these pictures. They've come out really well.

The sky looks really nice um. This image I wanted to put in because there were times when the image got a little overexposed like in this case, but that was rare. You know, even when I moved towards the evening, when light got a little dim. I think the photos came out pretty fabulous, I mean just look at the way the sky gradient stands out. These are absolutely dark conditions.

Of course, there's a bit of ambient lighting, but the sky is pretty good uh. This is all in regular mode, although there is a night mode that you can try and definitely the night mode has a bit of smoothening going on, and so the noise, as you can see on the right side is much lesser. Now here are some samples that I took using the primary lens on the left and for comparison's sake, I'll draw wide lens on the right again. Both pictures have come out really well, but the ultrawide lens definitely has a bit of a warmer tone and also has better dynamic range. If you can look at the sky, you'll see more information, better colors and just overall you know the shadows and the highlights are more pronounced in uh the pictures taken using the ultra-wide lens and even more so in this picture, you can see how good the ultrawide lens picture really is okay, so these are some pictures now that I took using the portrait mode.

So you know it just blurs the background. The foreground is in full clarity and yeah. I think it's done a pretty good job at edge detection. The dynamic range could have again been better, but that's something you can always do. You know with the help of some sort of editing software, but other than that I really enjoyed uh clicking these photos.

The edge detection is perfect. The foreground really stands out. The background can be really well. Blurred pictures have come out pretty well and now. Let's talk about that.3X optical zoom, in the a72 so on the left you've got ultrawide middle is 1x, and then you've got 3x. So I think the 3x zoom is pretty good.

It's lossless optical zoom, so you get really high quality. Imagery you've got one x on the left and three x on the right now, and you can look at the clarity for yourself, there's actually no uh deterioration in quality and, of course I would urge you to download these and see it for yourself. You don't have to take my word for it, but all of these images look really nice no loss whatsoever. Now there is 30x space zoom in the galaxy a72, but those images are quite poor in quality and something I would never use. There's also a macro lens in both the phones and again some samples for you to try uh, they're, actually pretty high quality, because it's five megapixel it does capture more detail than the other two megapixel macro lenses in the more inferior phones.

The quality is pretty sharp and if you are someone who's into macro, photography, not bad at all, and finally, some samples with the 32 megapixel front-facing camera. Now, as long as the sun is falling on you, both the skin tones and the edge detection is pretty accurate. But as soon as the sun is behind you, there is too much backlight the edge detection sort of goes for a toss, so you can see that my hair gets blurred. Also, the skin tones are maintained, and they're quite nice, but yeah. That's the only flaw, I would say from a software point of view.

These are all the available camera modes that you can use and a couple of things that are missing that you do get in the flagship. Phones are director's view and portrait video. Now, I'm not sure why portrait video is not a part of the galaxy a72 and the 52, but I feel that could have been introduced, but anyway, so yeah. These are the camera modes that are available and not available even within single take you only get three types of effects, although the s21 ultra has six type of shots that can be taken using single take so just something to highlight, and while both the phones can shoot 4k at 30fps, the a72 can also shoot full HD at 60fps. Now there are video samples in the link in the description so make sure to check those out all right conclusion time from a simple value of money.

Point of view. The a52 definitely offers much higher value for money than the a72. I mean the a72 is about 9, 000 rupees or about 110 dollars more expensive and for what just slightly bigger display, slightly larger battery capacity and that 3x telephoto lens, which I don't know how often you would use so, in my opinion, very tough to justify that price difference, so a52 definitely higher value for money. Now, having said that, you may think that the a52 is still expensive when compared to phones from other manufacturers and what they offer on sheet as specs sure. But again, as I said, when you get a galaxy, a series phones you're buying more into the experience and not just the specs.

So you know I talked about a perfect design. You got stereo speakers, you've got expandable storage, you get 3.5 mm headphone jack. You get a 90 hertz to 120 hertz refresh rate you get ip67 water and dust resistance. Furthermore, you get one UI 3.1, which has a ton of features built into the phone natively so and then, and then I talked about you know how you get Samsung's customer service, and they come with certain reputation that other brands may not have yet. So it's really just buying into all of that, and it all comes at a certain premium and that's the price you end up paying with the a52 or the a72 and at the end of it is really boils down to what's important for you.

If all of those things that make up the experience are not important, no point spending too much money, you can definitely get a cheaper phone that offers pretty much the same specs. I would do that if all of those extra things were not as important if performance was the only thing, that's important to me, because let's say I game a lot or multitask a lot.
