Charger Not Included: How fast will the Galaxy S21 charge? By Android Authority

Hey there my name is Gary sims, and this is android authority. Now the galaxy s21 does not come with a charger in the box, and that means you either need to buy a charger from Samsung or you need to use a charger that you've already got now. The question is: can you already use an existing charge now? This is a trend that we're going to see more and more from different smartphone manufacturers. So it's good to understand not having a charge in a box. What does it really mean, and what does it mean about charging speeds? Well, if you want to find out more, please let me explain. Okay.

So, as I said, the s21 does not come with a charge in the box. That doesn't mean you can't use your existing charge. You can use your existing charges. However, there are some details that you need to know now. First, we're going to talk about watts.

Quite a bit: 25 watts, 15 watts. What are what's what are what's? What is a unit of uh, how you measure, energy and in terms of electricity by multiplying volts times amps, so the amount of voltage amount of current gives you the amount of watts. Now the greater the watts is, the greater the energy going into the battery, which means it can be theoretically charged up quicker. Now the galaxy s21 can be charged at 25 watts. Now it does that using the USB power delivery, programmable power supply standard, that's a male force, it's the USB c pd PPS, and what that basically means it's an extension to the power delivery standard.

That's part of the USB. We won't go into all the different variations, and you know the different revisions of the things, but it allows the phone to ask for different levels of voltage and different levels of current now. The pps1 is actually good for mobile phone charging because it helps with the charging of the battery. Now, when you charge your battery, it isn't a linear thing. You don't just start at zero and then just pump in all that energy, and it gets charged.

There are actually some different phases. The two main phases are up to kind of 80 and then from 80 up to 100. Now the smartphone battery really benefits from being able to have a constant level of current, and then you can slowly increase the voltage. And then, when you get to that kind of 80 area, you can actually keep a constant voltage, and you can start to decrease the current and that allows you to get the most consistent charge the fastest charge, and it's also the best for the battery and that's what the PPS standard is designed for. Now, of course, the charges that Samsung sell are PPS compliant.

In fact, the charges that you get with the note 10 the note 20 and the s20 are all PPS compliant. So if you have a previous generation of Samsung device, then you can use your existing charger, and you will be able to get that 25 watt maximum out of it. You can also use third-party chargers that offer quick charge. Four plus compatibility or themselves are PPS, and if using either of those two types of charges, you will again get 25 watts. Now, if you have an older Samsung device- and you have the adaptive fast charging charger that comes with it, then that will charge at a maximum of 15 watts.

In fact, if you use quick charge, 3 or quick charge 2, then again you are limited to 15 watts. So we need some testing here at android authority, and we took a bunch of different chargers and try to charge up the s21 to see what kind of power levels were available, and this is what we found out so down the left. Here we can see the different charges. You've got the Google Pixel charger. You've got the lg 16, what fast charging got the Huawei, 40, watt, supercharge and so on and so on, and you can look at the standards here.

They support. So, for example, the pixel charger is a standard USB power delivery, charger you've also got quick charge. Three quick large, two littered amongst these different standards here and, of course, Huawei have got their supercharge. Now, when you use all of those, we basically find the maximum you're going to get is 15 watts via quick charge.2. You can also get 15 watts via power delivery, 2 and if you use Huawei's supercharge, then the maximum it's going to give.

You are 9 watts. The fascinating one is: if you use the Realme UK flash charge 3.0 you get 0.5 watts, so don't use that for charging your galaxy s21, it will take a really, really long time to charge up now before we talk about charging times. So what's the difference between 25 watt charging and 15 watt charging, the big thing is time. So if you're using the 25 watt charger using USB PDP, then you are going to charge your s21 ultra in about an hour plus will take a couple of minutes so an hour now, if you're, using a 15 watt charger on the s21 ultra it'll take about an hour and a half plus or minus a couple of minutes. Let's have a look at some numbers for the s21 ultra 15 watt charging. If you charge it just for 30 minutes, it's going to be 37 percent.

If you charge it for 40 minutes, you're going to get about 50 percent, and if you want to go all the way up to 100, then you're going to need to wait about an hour and a half. So the question is: are you the type of person that just charges overnight? Do you just charge uh? You know at the end of the day or whatever, or are you constantly plugging your device in for a quick charge for a quick boost because you're off out again, and you want to have more juice in it? If you are that latter category, then there will be some benefits from getting that more powerful charger. If you're like me, my phone generally lasts at the end of the day I just plug it in at night and in the morning it's at 100, then I wouldn't need to buy that faster charger, I'm quite happy with it charging in 90 minutes. Certainly long enough, and in fact even if I do need a quick boost, you know just half an hour charge does provide enough for me to go on for forward for the rest of the day, but you may need to choose differently. According to your needs.
