This is the ultimate question: what phone should I buy today? Not everyone has a thousand dollars to spend on a phone, but if you have a hundred and fifty dollars or fewer, this might be the phone for you. But let's talk about it first, should you buy the Blackberry probe in 2019, hello, everyone? This is Matt, and this is real world review check out my social media above and check out the description for some extras. Let's get started, the screen is surprisingly amazing. It isn't as bright as some new phones. Obviously, but this is a curved five point: four inch 1440p display, which is surprising for a BlackBerry device, not to mention the fact that they went with an AMOLED display on this phone. It's not the best, but it's pretty good for viewing content, and honestly I was really impressed.
It is the standard 16 by 9 ratio that everyone was used to when this phone came out in 2015. So that's not really too bad. There are many cases where the screen burn does happen in this phone, so you might have to spend a little more money to make sure you buy one without screen burn, or you can always replace the screen if you buy a broken one. Viewing angles are surprisingly good, but they better be when the sides of the phone are edged. The edges are pointless really, but it makes the phone stand out sure there's an edge page like the Samsung's, with the edge screens have, but it's kind of pointless to use.
Surprisingly, the side bezels and the chin are around the same size. If we don't include the speaker, grille area, there's no always-on display, but there is double tap to wake, which is always nice to see. There's an LED for notifications at the top part of the phone, which might explain why there's no always-on display the battery is decent. This phone has a fairly large 3410 William battery, which will last you throughout the day, but that's about it with this said. Blackberry phones are generally for people who want to use the phone a lot and getting through a whole day with heavy usage will be rough.
The phone does support quick charge 2.0 on the microUSB port on the bottom, and it is fast for the battery size. It also has wireless charging, but that's pretty slow, we're talking, maybe 5, plus hours, to fully charge it wirelessly. The processor is known for being a battery hog, so it isn't too surprising that the battery kind of sucks again getting through the day, shouldn't ? difficult, but good luck getting two days out of this phone. This is the part where I tell you how terrible this phone is. This phone is not supposed to have a Snapdragon 808 chip.
This is the same chip that the LG g4 b10, Nexus 5x, and the next bit Robin had the LG g4 in v10 were decent phones with the Nexus 5x being a little worse, but somehow the probe is worse than all of those phones. This phone constantly lags and heats up when you're trying to use the phone, especially when you're doing basic stuff like app updates. Good luck playing graphic intensive games on this phone because yeah, it's not that good. Also, Snapchat, is terrible on this. For some reason, the phone has three gigabytes of RAM, which seems reasonable for the processor, but it doesn't help at all.
This phone also isn't running one of the highest software's out there. This phone came with android 5.1.1 and was updated to android 6.0.1, which is where it'll live forever. Good luck, trying to root a blackberry phone. This phone is pretty much stock, Android with a hint of blackberry, just like what Motorola does with their phones, but blackberry just made this phone so slow. Let's talk about the keyboard because that's the main reason why people would want to buy this phone right.
The keys aren't that click, so you pretty much just push a button and hope that it was pushed and try and move on holding the alt and typing numbers is kind of annoying, because I couldn't really find a way to lock the alt button. So you end up squeezing your thumbs in the corner, which is kind of weird one. Cool thing is that the keyboard actually acts as a big trackpad. It takes time to get used to, but it could be useful. The speaker below the keyboard isn't that bad, but don't expect perfect sounding music still.
It is a front facing speaker, so it does get some bonus points for that speaking of volume. Do you know what this button? Does itbe a mute button? That's it! This also means that the power button is on the left, but it was surprisingly easy to get used to now. The saving aspect of this phone has to be the 18 megapixel sensor on the back. That has a dual tone: flash and name that I'm not even gonna, try to pronounce right wrong, as you would expect. Blackberry's image processing isn't the worst, but it's also nothing special compared to phones.
Nowadays, still it's good enough to show people pictures, but don't expect to brag about how awesome your phones can is also blackberry does give you a decent camera, app with manual mode and all the other good stuff. Video recording isn't that bad either, because the camera has optical image stabilization and can shoot at a few interesting video formats. Yeah, 24 frames per second mode is weird, but if you like that, this phone can do that. The front camera is a 2 megapixel sensor. I, don't even think I need to explain the issue with that.
This phone is going on four years old, and the security patch is 2 years out of date, so yeah this phone has been dead for a while still there's barely any keyboard phones out there that run Android at a reasonable price. So this might be a decent mid-range err for you. Lack of software updates does limit the type of apps that you can install into this phone, and it will only get worse over time. Microns is on the bottom, and I'm realizing how terrible that is in 2019. The phone surprisingly comes with 32 gigabytes of storage and supports a memory card which is pretty cool.
The phone is not water-resistant. Obviously, butter does have a headset jack on the bottom. Like I said, the battery life in the screen burn are some things to be concerned about in the future, but they're both fairly easy to replace, really, no one should be buying this phone. The screen is nice, but that's about it. I hope that this phone would be as good as I remembered it being.
But that's not the case today. It's a big heavy laggy phone, but it does have a keyboard. It also has a cheap price when trying to buy this phone new or used I would not recommend buying this hundred and $50 phone, but there's just something about having a decent sized screen and a sliding keyboard that makes his phone stand out. A very iconic design that was destroyed by weak specs in an underfunded software development team also, they should have stuck with the original name that they chose, which was plaque, berry, Venice and that's all I wanted to talk about.
