BlackBerry KEYone: Seeing the forest for the keys ...

- So, this is the Blackberry Key One, now, yes, it's a Blackberry, but not the same Blackberry from 10 years ago, technically, they're a little different, but whatever. It's a smartphone with a keyboard! Yes, I have a few thoughts on it. (techno music) Now, I gotta be perfectly honest here, for all the phones I have used over the years, I have never been a Blackberry guy, but I do have a little bit of context for keyboards. My very first Android phone, the original Droid, look at that, so wide. Before that, I used a Moto Q9H, Windows Mobile, that's how old I am. What do all three of these phones have in common? Well, solid hardware, seriously hardcore stuff here.

Software, mostly good, even these back in the day, boys and girls, you remember how that was. But, they all three have just phenomenal keyboards. So, the Key One is a tank, when you pick this thing up it's a little heavy, it's definitely a little thick, and even with the rounded corners, you can do some serious damage with this to somebody if you wanted to. But, here's the thing, this is not the best phone that money can buy, but that's not why you're buying it, you're gonna buy this for the battery life.3,500 milliamp hours, it's about 16% higher capacity than most other high end phones out there. Now, when you combine that with the processor that's not running as hard as it can all day long, it's gonna go damn near forever.

But, look at it like this, right, a Ferrari is gonna run really fast and really hot. This thing, it's a Honda Civic, it's gonna go a lot slower, a lot cooler, but a whole lot longer. You're probably not buying the Key One for the software either, now, Blackberry hasn't done a whole lot to what you see visually, you're gonna notice a lot of icons, and, actually, I like the lonter a lot, especially the little slide-in thing with all your information in one place. They did a really good job with that. And, widgets, too, we've seen that before on other lonters, but there's a whole lot under the hood whether you want to talk about all the security stuff or just other little maintenancy things that I don't think you need, and Blackberry's not the first to do it, but it's all still there.

But, really, the most important part here is that when it comes to updating its phones, Blackberry is just about the best. In fact, the only other company that's doing it better and faster than Blackberry is Google, so kudos to that, and you're probably not buying this phone for the camera either, it's a totally passable camera. Is it as good as the Galaxy S8? Absolutely not. Is it as good as the iPhone? Nope. Pixel, no.

It's good, but it's not great. And, for sure, it's the best camera we've ever seen on a Blackberry, right? No, the reason you're buying this phone, the only reason you should buy this phone is the keyboard. Is it a great keyboard? I don't know, I think it's small, but remember, I never used Blackberry keyboards back in the day, right? And, I'm to the point now where I'm fine with an on-screen keyboard, and actually the touch targets I think are a little bigger than these little keys here even though you have something physical to actually press. The other reason you're buying this is yes, because it's a Blackberry and it still has that special place in your heart, maybe you're driving along with your kids and they're in the backseat with their touchscreens and you're thinking, "I just want something with keys again that I know how to press. " I get it, Blackberry gets it, and that's why they made this phone.

They made it for you, the keyboard lover. They didn't make it for me, they didn't make it for everybody else out there, and they definitely made it for this guy. - It's time to review the phone that brought me out of retirement to put a Blackberry in my hand again, this is Crackberry's Blackberry Key One review. - So, look at it like this, maybe the Blackberry Key One isn't a rational decision for a lot of us in 2017, but for whole bunch of you out there, I get it, it's an emotional one, nothing wrong with that at all. That's it for this thing, be sure to subscribe, thanks, see ya.
