Lots of YouTube Jeff back again from dope tech daily comm today, I'm bringing you guys a special video talk about one of my favorite smartphones of the year. That's the BlackBerry key one. Now I did a full review of this a lot of coverage of it back in May, Salt Lake, some of that below. If you guys want to check out my very long full review was over 30 minutes. One of my favorite reviews have ever done, but today I'm back to talk about my five month. It's been about approximately five months since I got the phone originally five month review, and actually this video sort of serves two purposes because I actually got a second blackberry key one.
This is the new space black color huge shout out for my friends at blackberry, mobile. This is available at AT&T here in the US, and they sent this over to me. I really appreciate it now. The space black p1 here in the US is not the same as the black edition that you'll find in India and other parts of the world. That version actually has an extra gigabyte of RAM.
So you've got four gigs and 64 gigs of storage, which is twice the 32 gigs. That's on this model. This model is actually just a black version of the standard, blackberry key one that we got here in the US originally. So here's my unlocked silver model, the one that I had originally that I reviewed- and this is the space black model personally I- think the black just looks so much nicer. Much sleeker I, really love it again.
I've been carrying the key one is my main work phone for a while. You've got a little silver accent there on the button, I'm a huge fan. Overall, you can see the black just in cases. Everything, and so what I wanted to do today is I, got this phone in the space black model last week on Friday, and I've been using it now for about four days. So I wanted to give you guys a comparison of the brand-new fresh out-of-the-box blackberry key one, the black model, to my silver model, that I've been running here for the last five months and just tell you, you know some similarities and differences, basically how the battery life has held up over time and all that sort of stuff on the silver model.
So, as usual, I've got a little keep document very simple outline today. I want to talk about five things, the first thing being the battery life, so when I originally have reviewed the key one back in May I said that the battery life on this phone is by far one of the best that I've ever seen from an Android device and that's no different. Now the silver model I've still been able to get between five and seven hours of use, just depending on your know, screen on time. I'm talking about screen on time there and the standby time is just amazing as well. So here you can see the projected time remaining.
Four days left I've been using this one, a little sparingly because I've been using the black model, mainly at work. The last four days and this one just gets really crazy good standby time. You know probably six hours on average screen on time very impressive. So unless you're doing like some heavy gaming or something which you know, most people aren't really doing on the key one probably play Pok?mon Go, and I play. Super Mario runs stuff like that, but unless you're doing some really heavy gaming, you're going to get amazing battery life pretty much the same on the space black version I've been using it for the last.
You know four days, and I've been getting on average about six hours screen on time, mainly using it for emails. YouTube notifications, all that sort of stuff as a business phone setting up the BlackBerry hub, you know and using it for calendar appointments and all that sort of fun stuff that the BlackBerry is really designed for and perfect at. So definitely the battery life is held up over time. That was one of the things I was worried about and one of the things you should be worried about when you get a phone. Is he going to degrade over time? The answer in this case absolutely not I've, seen very little difference between my silver key one that I've used so long and the brand new one that's fresh out of the box.
There really isn't much difference in the battery life. Okay. The next thing in my keep document that I want to talk about the BlackBerry key one is operating UI and the smoothness. Now, when I originally reviewed, the phone I mentioned that having three gigs of ram was a little of concern and once I got all of my apps loaded up and used them for a long time. You know 60 or so apps.
You know trying to multitask. Well, it's not going to be a problem and I haven't really noticed it. You guys can see the UI is very fluid. It opens. You know productivity apps, like Gmail your social media, apps very, very quickly, no problems whatsoever, navigating the settings you know and everything is superfast.
Android, 7.1.1 overall I've been very impressed and to be honest in using the space black model of the last few days, I really can't notice any difference in the quickness of the two phones. It's pretty much the same when it comes to apps opening and things like that. I did dial back the developer options on my silver one, so it might be a little quicker just due to the longer animations, but I really haven't seen any lag creeping in overtime. Now, if you do some things like gaming, and you know heavy multitasking, what you're doing you know a bunch of social apps gaming media like YouTube and doing email, you might see a little of lag and yes I would certainly say it would be great to have that extra gigabyte of RAM in the space black version. I really wish.
They had added that four gigs of RAM, like on the international black version, but I haven't, had any problems at all, and I would say that if you're worried about this thing, degrading with performance over time very close to stock Android, very smooth, and I still have had any issues. The next thing that I was worried about was the keyboard durability. So obviously this guy's got a physical keyboard on it. One of the questions, on my mind, was with the clicking this and responsiveness of the keyboard degrade over time. So that's really a good question for a physical keyboard phone, and it's really important to a lot of BlackBerry users.
Now, first, I mentioned in my very first video that I had a little of uneven backlighting on some of my keys on the original review unit. That certainly seems to have been fixed on the new unit on the space black much more evenly lit and also in using the space black version. I can certainly notice a little of extra response when I'm typing on this keyboard versus the silver one, but it's certainly not a lot. So when I'm typing on the space black keyboard, there is some more feedback, because it's fresh out of the box, obviously I haven't pressed the keys as much I really put a lot of work in on this silver. One typing out, work, email and stuff like that.
So certainly that makes sense, but it's certainly not to the level where I can't use the silver keyboard it sort of gotten. You know broken in with my fingers in mind. My typing patterns, so I wouldn't say that's necessarily a bad thing. The keys aren't mushy or anything like that, which I think a lot of people are worried about. The responsiveness has integrated that much, but, of course, there is some difference between a brand-new one and one that I've been using for five months, not a problem for me, though, updates how's blackberry man with the updates.
It really depends on the model, but for the Lock model they have been rolling out updates and on this AT&T space, black variant that I just got I did get an update right out of the box that got me the September security patch. They did confirm that the blackberry, q10 and Oreo they haven't given a timetable yet, but if you have the key one, you can be sure of that. I put that wallpaper there to remind me. You guys can see that I didn't update this one on purpose, just because I wanted to see if there were any noticeable differences between the two software versions that I'm running on the two different phones. You can see if we go in here on my unlocked model and on my AT&T model, they're, both running 7.1.1, but they are running different, build numbers. Obviously, I didn't update to unlock model.
You will also notice there's a slight difference in the color temperature on the two displays and a little the auto brightness sensor. I did notice that that happens with different displays. Different phones, it's not really a huge deal if you set them side-by-side. Obviously, you've noticed the brightness sensor and a little of the color temperature, but something I, don't notice when using one phone or the other and, like I, said the difference between these two build numbers, the actual smoothness and opening apps and navigation, and things like that using the hub, there's really been no difference for me in the UI navigation and then the final thing, which I mentioned in my original review. That I was concerned about our accessories, so would blackberry or third-party support accessories on this phone, and the answer is not really so.
This is the only thing that I've been a little disappointed with. There haven't been a lot of cases, especially third-party cases, for the BlackBerry key one actually did a video showing off my favorite cases for the key one, and those are the Scipio cases for the blackberry key one. So the Scipio case is I'm a pretty big fan of those, especially these one-piece cases, because I don't like folio cases. I know a lot of blackberry fans do, but I don't. This is just a one piece.
Hard shell case gives you. Nice protection protects the camera and everything and then Scipio got quite a few cases that you can buy, but they're, really, the only major manufacturer I've seen that's made really high quality cases. Now there are some first party cases from blackberry, but those are kind of difficult to come by. To be honest, I tried to order the first wave and even now, they're occasionally out of stock on Amazon I've been meaning to get some of those. So I could do a review for you guys and if I get a chance, I get some of the first party holsters and some other folio cases.
Maybe I can get a few from blackberry just so we can take a look at those because I haven't had a chance yet anyway, after five months, I would say this is still an amazing phone. If you're looking for a business phone productivity phone or just a secondary phone, that's got a really cool feature, that being the keyboard which you can use the trackpad shortcuts. It's just a different kind of phone than your everyday Android phone that you're going to get with no bezels and a big screen and I love. If I've gotten used to the physical keyboard, and personally I'm a huge fan. So especially if you love great battery life, you're going to get amazing performance out of this phone, all right guys so again, I'll link my full review originally down there.
