BATTERY DRAIN TEST | 2020 M1 MacBook Air vs. 2020 M1 13-Inch MacBook Pro

A video brought to you by popular demand. Ladies and gentlemen, we have another battery drain test on the line turns out the m1 13-inch MacBook Pro is talking that smack. So you already know the m1 MacBook Air isn't taking anybody's crap. The entire internet is going ballistic over how apple is revolutionizing the entire computer industry, with the introduction of the m1 chip, the m1 chip not only boasts tremendous performance improvements, but also touts a much longer battery life as compared to its intel counterparts. We won't waste much time because you know why you came here. You want to know how real world usage will drain the battery and, of course, to see which MacBook reigns supreme.

Will the 13-inch MacBook Pro reign supreme, boasting the most impressive battery of them all, or will the finless air edge out just for kicks and giggles? I threw in a prior intel MacBook Air just to see how that compares straight up against the m1 MacBook Air and new m1 13-inch MacBook Pro before we roll this intro, make sure to exit full screen or scroll down and give me an early thumbs up as these videos take a ton of time for preparation, filming and editing, also which one do you have your money on, the intel, air, the m1 air or the m1 13 inches pro go ahead and drop that comment below and let's roll this intro all right folks, I know you're excited, but we have to go over some rules and the tail of the tape or, as us, nerds like to call them the technical specifications. First off. Yes, we got them color coded starting with our first MacBook in the pink trunks. I mean in rose gold coloring is our 2019 intel, MacBook Air yeah? I'm glad I kept this one and not the early 2020 intel MacBook Air, because all that was basically switched was the keyboard edition of true tone, and I think that was it wasn't worth the upgrade and thank god I did that, because lo and behold, boom m1 MacBook airs not even a year later rest in peace to all those that got stuck with the intel, 2020 MacBook Air, my condolences, then, in space gray we have the baseline model, 2020 m1, MacBook Air, give it up for this beast of a machine and lastly, in silver we have our base m1 13-inch, MacBook Pro I'll recap, all the tech specs to have our official tell of the tape. So you let me know guys which one is taking the gold.

You see it's quite interesting, because externally everything pretty much matches up PPI is pretty much the same screen. Resolutions are very similar and screen. Size is exactly the same on all three. So really the biggest factor. That's going to set these machines apart are the internals.

So all right enough with the introductions, let's begin so for our first test, we're going to hit up our good old benchmarks. The reasoning for this is simple: each test requires a fairly decent amount of power, but, most importantly, most of these benchmarks mix in a healthy dose from a variety of tasks, sometimes drawing huge power from the CPU and others. The GPU for each MacBook, true tone was disabled. Auto brightness was disabled, they're all hooked up to the same Wi-Fi network, and I got Siri to raise the brightness to a fairly bright 85 percent. I know 85 is brighter than most people use, but I wanted to see just how efficient these new chips are.

If you run your MacBook with less brightness, then hey that just means you can expect to squeeze a lot more battery life out of your MacBook. So after running geek bench, 5 cine bench and heaven we see all of our mac books were caught off guard and weren't expecting to go ham. All that fast. The intel MacBook Air surprisingly beat the m1 MacBook Air, with the intel coming in at 91 percent. The m1 air, not far behind with a cool 89 percent and the 13-inch pro, is showing some impressive cardio right off the bat coming in at a nice and healthy 93.

Will the intel MacBook Air blow this lead like every other Atlanta sports team, or will the m1 MacBook Air pull innate Robinson and get demolished by its evil cousin with an intel chip instead stay tuned to find out for test number dos, since it was throwback Thursday. When I filmed the test, I decided to bring the nostalgia of my endless nights at university studying on my Mac every single night, so I mimicked writing a paper whether you use notes, Microsoft, word or something else, plus a Wikipedia tab, because you know research and sh, while blasting some tunes on Apple Music at full volume. Your roommate might be trying to sleep, but hey man. Listen! Sometimes you have to focus on yourself kings and queens, so yeah to recap: Apple Music, radio, blasting at a hundred percent. Writing a research paper on the notes app while researching on Wikipedia for one hour and at the end of it we have the intel air at 69 percent.

Those who predicted the m1 air was going to swing back, were correct. It edged out around and came in at 73, while the 13-inch pro really just chilling and came in with 79 juice left, so we're almost two hours in, but we have to continue. We can't let these guys catch a break. These mac books know what they signed up for it's a free for all, it's every MacBook for itself but looks like all three are ready. As we head into round number three, the infamous Netflix test now look, let's not lie to each other.

A lot of us spend a little too much time on Netflix or Hulu Disney plus whatever. So this is the perfect real world test. As we go through a Naruto marathon, I didn't even know it was on Netflix until recently man rewatching the tuning exam episodes took me way back. Definitely a big old feels trip the nostalgia I swear, so I let these guys' duke it out for three long hours, and so after about seven or eight episodes and after hitting up Duncan to get me through the night we arrive at the following figures: to intel, MacBook Air, you are good FAM, damn round. Three was rough on all of these, but especially the intel air as it drops to 27 the m1 air in comparison, showing a lot more promise as it drops to 39 and the mighty 13-inch pro, not letting up one bit never skipping leg day, as it comes in at a pretty impressive 49, near-half capacity, a quick little side note, while our belligerents are on the stool.

I just want to say I'm pretty impressed, especially since your laptop or MacBook screen is what draws the majority of power and being at 85 percent brightness, almost five hours in and after a whole three hours, Netflix marathon, we can begin to see the true power of the m1 chip. It's the reason I wanted to include the intel 2019 air, so we can see how they stack up when going head to head and as of now, the differences are pretty vast, we're not talking one percent better to battery or even two percent, we're looking at double-digit gains for the finless m1 error over the previous iterations, alright Dan break over. Here we go round four. We all love face, timing, sometimes you'll be bored and your friend will be bored as well, and so you FaceTime your friend, so you all can be bored together. The letters' ft, followed by a question mark are now synonymous with a video call.

We all do it here and there so for this test. I got one of my other devices to FaceTime each MacBook and remain on for 20 minutes per device. While one was doing the face. Timing, the other two sat on idle until each one got their turn after each one had facetimed for 20 minutes. The intel air now falls to dangerously low levels being in the red zone with 10 percent battery health remaining, while its arch nemesis, the m1 air, was able to preserve more gas coming in at 25, while the 13-inch pro is literally yawning.

It still has 38 and now moving on to a quick little gaming test, we downloaded asphalt 9 on each device, a great game to test, since it's somewhat AFK able I started it up, and would you believe the power and efficiency of the m1 chip look asphalt? 9 is not the most graphically intensive game, but before the introduction of the m1, anyone with a general sense of tech would strongly advise not to get an air for gaming. Of course, this made sense before the m1 era, but now the m1 air and pro booted up asphalt, 9 no problems, while the intel air uh is my guy over there taking a snooze the is this okay. It took way too long to load, so I went ahead and started gaming on the m1 mac books, and they ran asphalt.9 really smooth just goes to show how powerful these new chips are. Even on the graphics department, the intel air eventually loaded up and when it ran the game, it was dropping frames left and right, definitely not a pleasurable gaming experience, but get this rip as the intel air couldn't even make it past the entire gaming test, spoiler alert. This is only test number 5 out of 10.

Are you kidding me, ladies and gentlemen, this goes to show just how amazing the new entry-level air is and, as can be seen here, its battery is way better than on the intel errors. Sadly, our intel air tapped out at 6 hours and 15 minutes at this point in the testing. The m1 air still sat at 16, while the pro is at 30 percent and by the conclusion of the gaming test, the m1 air now sits at a respectable 13 still holding up while the pro at 27 we chug right along and for this test. I wanted to see how well optimized the m1 chips are when running safari versus chrome. Some of these websites do background, rendering for ads or other marketing.

So I started with just a single tab and every three minutes I'd open up a couple more tabs until I reach about a dozen plus. I did this for 15 minutes on safari and after 15 minutes and a decent amount of tabs open. The m1 air now sits at a mere 10 percent, also hitting the red zone and the 13-inch pro now at a quarter percent juice right at 25. We do the exact same test only this time, replacing our browsers using chrome this time, an app that has its own m1 optimized version, but nonetheless, is still notorious for draining battery quicker than apple's own browser safari. So we replicated the same test starting with 1, then 3 and so forth, and after 15 minutes, the air is now starting to gasp for breath almost throwing in the towel, as it now sits at 7, while the 13-inch pro no surprise to anyone is at a healthier 22 percent.

Now for my video creators, I loaded up Final Cut Pro x and, let me tell you guys, running final cut on these m1 machines. Is god tier? It's buttery smooth even on the finless MacBook Air for 4k 60fps editing, the air should cover basic editing, needs for most people for extra power and performance. The fan inside the 13-inch pro will ultimately make a big difference if working with AK raw or some other codecs. Even then, the fans have yet to crank up when I use it for video, editing and even exporting videos. So for this test I loaded up a 5-minute video with minimal edits and exported them simultaneously on each device.

Shockingly, both not only exported these in a flash, but both were silent and only dropped three points each with the air now holding on to dear life at four percent and the 13-inch pro our apparent winner at 19. That is, unless the m1 air can successfully pull off a Hail Mary had that chest been performed on the intel, MacBook Air man rest in peace exporting any video on an intel air is tough. The fans crank up poor thing, just can't handle it all too well, but the m1 chips changing the game. Alright test9 is a simple standby test. Nothing too exciting.

Here. Just pretend you left your MacBook Air on for a quick Starbucks run. I had planned to see both up and running when I arrived back from getting more coffee but, to my surprise, the m1 MacBook Air died at 7 hours and 20 minutes lasting about 16 longer when performing the same tasks when directly comparing it to the intel air. When the MacBook Air died, the 13-inch pro sat at 18 and then once the test was finished, 20 minutes on idle. It then just dropped one percentage point to 17.

So, ladies and gentlemen, we have a clear and decisive winner. Apple's claims on the 13-inch. MacBook Pro far surpassed my expectations, but we're not done yet. Just because it won doesn't mean it gets any special treatment. It must run until there's no more gas in the tank for test number 10 and with a single combatant remaining, we head over to YouTube on chrome and play my MacBook review.

Playlist a playlist. You should probably check out click on the top right. At this point it was late. I think it was three or four in the morning, but the dedication to witness the power of the m1 chip before my very eyes is what kept me awake. Finally, the m1 MacBook Pro 13-inch meets its fate at 8 hours and 47 minutes of continuous use, give it up for our winner, ladies and gents.

So what have we learned today? We learned a lot. Actually. Let me first just say that apple's claims for battery life are somewhat misleading. If you look at their website, they use herbage such as up to 18 hours Apple TV at movie, playback, like who measures battery life in this manner. Can somebody tell me please also like I mentioned this was on 85 brightness, so obviously you can expand your battery life by a considerable margin.

If you just lower down that brightness, we tested a variety of things. We had benchmarking regular web browsing some gaming in there, video exporting you get the idea. We didn't give these guys much of a break, but when looking at percentages from my testing, the m1 based 13-inch MacBook Pro scored 40 percent higher battery life as compared to the intel, MacBook Air and roughly 19 higher than the air when going head-to-head performing the exact same tasks. So it's clear to see that if you're doubtful of the m1's capabilities don't buy either of these machines- and I promise you'll be very happy but to get the best battery life currently available on the MacBook line, you have to go with the 13-inch MacBook Pro guys. As always, I appreciate every single one of you guys support.

The channel will hopefully hit 50 000 subscribers before the turn of the year. These tests take a ton of prep and plenty of time to actually test film script and edit, a like would be tremendously appreciated. But if you want to show me that you really like the video consider subscribing as this channel is all about tech, we feature unboxing comparisons, drain tests, giveaways benchmarking tests and so much more next drain test after this one is the iPhone 2020 battery drain test so be on the lookout for that one until next time guys hope you enjoyed, and I'll be catching you all in my next video you.
