Hey, what's up it's jarred with state of tech today we're going to compare the Apple Watch SE and the series 3. , whether you have a series 3 and are considering upgrading to the SE, have an older Apple Watch and you're trying to decide which one to upgrade to- or this is your first time considering an Apple Watch altogether. My goal with this video is to help you choose between which Apple Watch, whether it be the Apple Watch SE or the Apple Watch Series 3. , so we're going to talk about what is the same. What is different and then some thoughts on helping you make that decision, if it's still unclear to you, so before I jump in both of these watches are great. Both of them are awesome options.
My series 3. I continue to pull out all the time and use, and it just impresses me it's held up really well and everybody that I know that has a series, three still loves it, and many of them don't see a reason to really upgrade yet. Keep that in mind. As I talk about these features and differences between these watches, of course, they've apple has made some decisions with introducing a new uh kind of model of the watch, the SE, but they also have the iPhone SE. Both of those are phones and watches that provide a great apple experience with pretty much everything that you would expect from apple, of course, missing out on some higher end stuff that the Apple Watch Series six comes with or the iPhone pro, but definitely an excellent, buy and good value for the money.
There's nothing else on the market, like these watches, even other watches made by other manufacturers, don't even really hold up to this series, 3 watch, which is quite old. Now, let's talk about. What's the same between these I'm going to be mentioning a couple of things, I also want you to be aware of a video that's coming out soon, which is an Apple Watch, tips video. So if you want to learn more about your Apple Watch and learn some cool tips and tricks on how to get around your watch better and use some different features make sure to subscribe to the channel here. So you can get access to that uh, so things that are the same, and I apologize.
If I go through these quickly, there's a lot that I have to get through here uh, but I hope that at the end of it, you have a decision made the watchOS 7 software that just came out for both of these watches and the series 6 runs on both of these watches you're going to get watch OS 7, whether you're on the SE or the series three, which is great you're, getting the most up-to-date Apple Watch experience. It doesn't matter which Apple Watch you buy. Both of these watches have that software, both of them have retina OLED displays, so you're going to have really nice looking uh information, easy to read nice detail and all that good stuff on both of these. They both have aluminum cases, so they're made out of the same material. They both have ion x, glass displays uh, of course, covering the display, and that glass is there to protect.
It does a pretty good job of protecting. There are many times on my watches that I've accidentally smacked it thinking for sure I've broken my watch and sure enough. It looks perfect, but I do know for a fact that if you, if your watch, does come in contact with some abrasive surfaces, it will scratch up. So you definitely want to be careful or maybe even consider, a protective screen to go over the top of it, which I'll link to the one that I've used on my kids, watches, and I've used before on my own down in the description below they both have up to 18 hours of battery life, which is pretty cool. I wish that the newer watches had more battery life, but the fact that they have more features and still have the same battery life is still pretty cool.
I still average a good full day, sometimes even longer than a full day of use. Out of my Apple Watch Series 3 uh, even these days with watch OS 7 on it, they're, both GPS, enabled, which means you can use that for the turn by turn directions when you're doing a workout or something like that, the GPS is going to track you and make sure that you have all of your workout data recorded. Of course, the GPS works a lot better with a phone connected, but having GPS on. There is really nice as well. They both have Wi-Fi 2.4 gigahertz. So if you have faster Wi-Fi at your home, like Wi-Fi 5g you're, also going to need that 2.4 gigahertz enabled to make sure that your apple watches, have a network to connect to Wi-Fi at home is definitely much better for your apple watches. So it's not utilizing a slower connection over Bluetooth to your phone.
Both watches are swim proof up to 50 meters, so you can take them swimming. You can take them in the water up to 50 meters, and I believe it's about 30 minutes or so that they can stay underwater uh, but they're water resistant both of them have the same rating. Heart rate sensors, they both have with the high low and irregular rhythm notifications. So that's a neat feature that apple came out with a while back and both of these have that they both have emergency SOS. So if you need to send an so, you hold down the button on the side and SOS pops up, and you swipe to activate it.
They both also have an altimeter. The altimeter helps measure your altitude and that works really nicely with workout apps, hiking, apps and stuff, like that. So you can see how much you've climbed the altimeter is recorded periodically through the apps that you're using there simple color options both of these come in silver and space gray. They both have speakers and microphones so that you can hear your calls. You can hear Siri respond to you.
You can also send voice text, messages and stuff like that to each other, and they both have the digital crown, which makes it really nice and easy to navigate through your watch. Now, before I jump into what's different, I want to tell you about my website learnwithjared. com, if you've ever wanted to learn photography get better at using your camera. I have a free course for you there that I would invite for you to check out. I also have courses on WordPress and website design, social media, marketing and productivity as well using apps like notion.
So if you're interested in courses, many of them are free, I invite you to check them out. Go to learnwithjarrod. com. The link is down in the description below, so what is different. There has to be something different with these watches and yes, there is a lot that is different.
We're going to dive into that. Obviously, both of them have different sizes. There's the 40 and 44 millimeters with the SE and the 38 and 42 millimeters with the series. Three doesn't look like much of a difference, but it does make a difference in the size of the watch. A 38 millimeter watch is definitely pretty small, even though it looks very much close to the same size as the SE.
It does feel a little smaller, so the available screen real estate on both of these watches is where you really notice the difference. The SE has 759 square millimeter display area versus the 563 square, millimeter display area of the series 3. , that's where the biggest difference is in the actual screens. It's a lot more available real estate on the SE than there is on the series three, so bigger pictures, bigger navigation. All of that stuff, more room you could tell, even just by looking at the screens when I go into uh, have to put in the password you can see just how much bigger the screen real estate area is in comparison to the series 3.
, the dual-core chip, the s5 chip on the s3 is 2x faster than the s3 chip on the series 3 watch, and so that is a bit faster. I haven't noticed that really means a lot unless you're using apps that are a little heavier like apps that are going to have to phone home to your phone to pull in information or pull information over the web. It seems like these SE watches a little faster than the uh the series three, and that might also have to do with the fact that the SE has the w3 connectivity chip versus the w2 chip of the series three. That is the chip that handles your Bluetooth, your Wi-Fi and other connectivity stuff. That has to do with your connecting to your other Apple devices, connecting to your AirPods and stuff like that.
So of course, the w3 chip is faster. It utilizes Bluetooth, 5.0 rather than Bluetooth, 4.2, and so there are a little of differences there, but uh you know quicker. Connectivity is what it comes down to. Both of them have the digital crown, but the SE has the crown with the haptic feedback so that nice feedback that you get that's little vibrations. That makes it feel really nice and like a legitimate watch, you're going to get on the SE, not on the series 3.
, the SE is case, is 100, recycled, aluminum versus the aluminum of the other case. I don't know what that necessarily means or if it makes a difference. I know apples move towards sustainability and their promises are that they're going to be making everything out of recycled materials soon. So I don't know the series 3 could be made out of recycled materials. At some point we don't know, but that is something that's mentioned on the site.
The SE has one additional color option as well. Earlier I mentioned the two silver space gray. Gold is also available for your SE option, not on your series 3 option. The SE comes in a GPS plus cellular option as well. If you're wanting to utilize the family setup buying a watch to give it to one of your children, you're going to need a watch that has the cellular option.
That is not an option on the GPS models, and it's not an option on the series three at all. So whether you want the cellular option for yourself or for the family setup, the SE would be the watch for you. The SC has 32 gigabytes of internal storage versus eight gigabytes on the series. Three. The storage is used for storing music, locally photos and stuff, like that, so the storage definitely could come into play and be a help for you, depending on how you plan to use your watch, the SE has the second generation heart rate sensor, which is a little faster, a little better technology than the original one.
I haven't noticed much of a difference between these two. I tried reading my heart rate on both of these watches at the same time and separately and didn't really notice much of a change other than the fact that the SE updated a little faster than the series 3. The sensor on the back of the SE is ceramic and sapphire crystal versus the composite plastic of the series three. So a little difference on the back of the watch. Of course that's going to hold up to more of a beating than the uh the plastic on the back of this one, but it's up against your arm.
So I don't. I don't know how that's going to really hurt your watch, how you can really break that part of the watch, but it is nicer to have the ceramic and sapphire crystal the SE. Has a compass and an always-on altimeter. We talked about the altimeter earlier. The altimeter is always running on the SE, giving you real time updates when needed, and also in future updates you'll, be able to see uh that elevation change, um recorded in the app from what I understand the compass app, also besides, just being able to point and find north and all that good stuff can be used for multiple things and in my tips and tricks.
Video I'll definitely be showing you how you can use that compass app to do a couple of cool things with your Apple Watch. The SE has a second generation speaker and microphone, and it also has a different location for those as well. If you look on this side of the Apple Watch, you can see that there is a microphone hole right by the crown. There is not one on the third gen watch here on the series 3. If you rotate to the other side, you can see the speaker on the SE, but on the series 3, you can see both the speaker and the microphone next to each other.
There are a couple of things that changed there. First, your shirt or jacket would be rubbing up against your microphone, which would provide poor, uh quality audio for the person on the other side, when you're using your watch to talk to somebody across a phone call also with uh dictation and all that stuff and using Siri, the microphone had issues on this side, brushing up against things or even pushing up against the skin of your arm. Moving it over to this side, also added separation between your audio output and your audio input, which made it a lot easier for the watch to have improved clarity and phone calls and all that good stuff. I use my watch a ton for answering phone calls when my kids or my wife call or anything like that, and I'm busy. I just answer and I have my hands full.
Furthermore, I just answer the phone that way and the call quality is much better being with the new microphones that the SE and newer watches have uh, but it's still not too bad on the series. Three, I'm not knocking the series three at all the accelerometer on the SE is also better. It enables fall detection as well. I don't know uh what else. The accelerometer's improvements would actually uh pan out to be in real life, being able to support up to 32 g forces versus 16.
I'm guessing that really is the difference in what they need for the fall detection, but the fall detection is not an option on the series 3. , the SE also has international emergency calling, and it has a noise decibel meter as well with the notifications that you're in a loud environment. So those are the differences between these watches, pretty much. Every difference that there is so is it worth spending the extra money on the Apple Watch? Se, it's 80 is the difference us between these two right. Now, of course, sometimes we see the series three on sale for a bit less, so that price gap could increase.
Eighty dollars is still a lot of money, so if those features don't necessarily matter to you, and you're, just really looking for an Apple Watch, the series 3 is going to be a great watch for you. I would consider, though, the future proofing of the SE over the series 3. The series 3 has been out for a while. I do imagine apple supporting it with software updates for at least two more years, even if next year they stopped selling the s3 so probably a couple of years of software updates, whereas the SE is probably going to have an even longer track record of updates. The SE might not even really get any updates next year, but who knows the software updates, though, would definitely be around for much longer so future proofing, I don't know apple products still run forever in comparison uh, even when the software updates are not being supported anymore.
So an Apple Watch, 3 purchased right now, is still going to last you several years, even if apple stops providing software updates to it. Both of these watches perform really well, as I mentioned before, the Apple Watch Series.3 is no slouches at all. It keeps up, and does everything really well, albeit it doesn't have as much to run as the SE. So you know the SE is going to be faster in certain areas and then definitely with those other features, the SE. You can't compare that to the Apple Watch Series 3 because it doesn't have them.
So that's really. My thoughts on these watches is. Do the features make sense for you to spend the extra money. Of course there are larger sizes of these watches as well. The 44 and the 42 millimeter the same price difference between those two but, like I said you might hold out and even wait for a good deal on the Apple Watch Series 3, because sometimes it does get cheaper than the current 199 price point.
