Apple iPhone XS and XS MAX First Look: A clear step forward

The iPhone, 10s and 10s max are finally here sort of they're actually coming out later this week, and we're working on our full review. We love a lot of testing to do, but I just couldn't help myself. I wanted to get on camera and talk to you guys a bit about the first impressions. I've had with these two devices, and we have to start obviously, with the design. Furthermore, I mean largely the iPhone 10s is a carbon copy of last year's iPhone 10. It does use a few different materials, there's a slightly more durable glass on the front and back, so it's less prone to cracks and scratches, which is a really nice touch.

I did kind of beat the crap out of my iPhone 10 from last year, but obviously it's its very familiar in terms of design. The tennis max, you could say the same thing about it, but it is quite a bit bigger and I should point out using this device can be actually a little more troublesome than you might expect, even if you're coming from an older, big iPhone, that's because check out the screen. This is a 6.5-inch, LED Retina display. This is the biggest phone screen. Apple has ever used, it's actually a little bigger than the screen on the Galaxy Note 9, and since there is no bezel above or below the screen, if you're coming from something like an iPhone, 8 plus you're going to find yourself reaching for the top of the screen and sort of shimmying up and down the body a bit more than you might be used to it.

Certainly it took me a bit of getting used to I've, had it for about a day now, and I'm sort of wrapping my head around it, but this is a lot of screen to kind of make. Do it and I should also point out that the screen real estate isn't always used super, super well, I mean it's basically the same amount of information on the small screen as on the big one. There are a few things different on the iPhone 10s Mac's. Certain apps will display in a multi pane mode when you run them in landscape, so you get more information crammed onto one screen and certain sites like the New York Times will default to a three column view. So you actually get to view more information on the display at once.

That's not across the board, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how developers embrace this bigger screen and hopefully see them using it more advantageous leap down the road. We should also talk about performance. These two devices both were on Apple's 8, 12 Bionic chips set, and it's a pretty decent improvement over what we got last year. That's largely due to the architecture, so the two performance scores are up to 15% faster than what you got on the iPhone 10 and the GPU is up to 50% faster, which is kind of a big lift ?, especially if you're a big smartphone gamer. Now that said, if you're looking at an iPhone 10 and an iPhone 10s or 10s Macs right next to each other, you might be hard-pressed to tell that difference, just sort of zipping through the OS.

It feels a little smoother, but not by much you really kind of have to be looking for those differences. That said, if you are again a big smartphone gamer or if you like, to rely on apps that have started to use machine learning, models that run on the device- hey, there's a new angled neural engine there with eight cores up from two, so those are run faster as well. You'll, definitely see a performance increase of some kind, but it's more noticeable in certain applications. We should also talk about the cameras which largely look the same as what we got on last year's iPhone 10, but we do have a new 12, megapixel wide-angle sensor up top and a lot of internal intelligence. That's meant to bring out the capabilities of that sensor.

Apple has talked up what it costs. It's smart HDR feature which is going to sound pretty familiar if you're a fan of the Google Pixel twos. Basically, what it does is it takes multiple exposures of the same scene and stitches that together to give you a more detailed photo with better dynamic range. I haven't tested this thing to thoroughly so far, especially against some of this year's biggest flagship phone, so stay tuned to our full review. For that, but I will tell you this in the meantime, I feel a little depressed by the iPhone temps camera for a while, especially what I'm hanging out with all the other tech people here in New York, everyone is shooting on a galaxy s 9 or a p20 Pro, and those cameras take effortlessly good photos in ways that generally make the iPhone 10 look a little jumpy, the iPhone, 10s and 10s max, even in our limited time, together, are starting to close that gap, so stay tuned for more, as we kind of figure it all out together.

Oh, and one more thing face, ID is actually gotten a little better, which is hugely important when you figure apples, never going to put a home button on these phones. Again, it's all about your face to unlock your phone, and fortunately, this year, it's just a little faster, and I know what you're thinking a little faster. How much more helpful? Could that really be? Well? Actually kind of counts for a lot. It used to be that on the iPhone 10, if you swipe up to unlock there would be a beat and then the phone would recognize you and unlock. That's still the case on the 10s and 10s max, sometimes, but other times I've been able to swipe up and before I, even finish swiping, it's already good to go.

It's seen my face. It says you're, okay, and I'm into all of my content. So if you're the kind of person who's consistently in a rush and just needs to be able to access your stuff at a moment's notice, this iPhone is the one for you and I should also point out. It's really nice that Apple in forcing us to embrace face ID has made it less of a barrier, there's less keeping you from the things that you have to do now. Obviously, there's a lot more going out of these two phones that I've been able to get to in this short Randy video, but we're working on the floor view right now.

That will be ready for you shortly. So if you have any questions, let us know and in the meantime I got to go, get back to testing you.
