Apple iPhone SE vs. the competition

I'm, all about the mid-range phones, I'm sick of seeing flagship prices claim to exorbitant levels year after year and while I'm not sure that a $200 budget phone will be powerful enough for my needs. The sub $500 mid-range is a seed spot. So when Apple announced the iPhone SE last week for $400, my inner Scrooge was pleased. The sec 4.7-inch screen and retro iPhone 8, like body also brought on a wave of nostalgia for smaller devices, plus its 813 Bionic processor, might make it the most powerful 400 hour handset around. But that doesn't mean you don't have other choices. There are plenty of good phones under $500 that you should also consider.

The first alternative that springs to mind is Google's Pixel 3a. It cost the same as the SE, although you might find it for cheaper now, because the rumors are that a Pixel 4a is coming soon. Although the pixel 3 apexes, a mid-range Snapdragon, 670 processors, Google's tuned its software to make the $400 phone run, basically as fast as a flagship. Of course, if you're a processor snob, you will still prefer the iPhones a 13 Bionic, which is the same high-end chip found in the likes of the iPhone 11:11 Pro and 11 Pro max, but most people won't really notice a difference in performance. The pixel 3/8 screen is noticeably bigger than the iPhone SES, though Google's affordable handset has a 5.6 inch, OLED display, which is positively enormous compared to the SES 4.7-inch LCD screen. The pixel also has a higher resolution at 1080p, whereas the iPhone runs at a mere 750 P.

Both phones start with 64 gigs of storage and offer a single rear, 12 megapixel cameras with the same f-18 aperture. Although Google has arguably better image processing software, the pair also have similarly sharp selfie camp and since the iPhone SE is newer, it offers support for the latest Wi-Fi sixth standard, while the Pixel 3a is still on 802 11 EC, though almost no one uses Wi-Fi 6 just yet. So really this isn't the most meaningful difference. If you're picking between Google or Apple, your decision ultimately boils down to your software preference. The two handsets are pretty similar where it counts.

Although the iPhone SE is a little more future-proof thanks to its superior processor, the pixel does have a slightly better screen and a more modern appearance though, but these two aren't the only companies that are making decent sub $500 phones, Sam saw Motorola and OnePlus all have great offerings in that price range. The galaxy a 51, for example, costs $400 and is currently even cheaper at several stores, while the Moto G stylus goes for $300 at Best Buy. Both these guys are larger devices with the galaxy's screen measuring 6.5 inches, while the motor stretches to 6 point 4 inches, though they both run at full HD Samsung as usual, delivers a superior screen here with a ml at display, while Motorola uses an LCD panel, the galaxy 51 and the Moto G stylus also look more modern than the iPhone SE featuring the all screen faces and hole-punch front cameras that we've come to expect on flagships. Samsung also offers the sharpest, selfie camera of a lot with a 32 megapixel sensor. Meanwhile, the motor beats the pixel and the iPhone SE, with this 16 megapixel option on the rear.

The G stylus has a 48 megapixel triple camera system, while the galaxy adds a depth sensing option to its trio, both these phones offer macro and ultra white lenses in their arrays, making for more versatile shooting Samsung uses its own Enos 96 xi, chipset in the galaxy, a 51 which performs similarly to the G styluses snapdragon 665. Both of these pale in comparison to the iPhones, a 30 mi ionic, though, which runs much faster of the four phones I've mentioned. Those who prioritize powerful cameras and great displays should up for the galaxy 851. If you like having clean Android software, then the Pixel 3a is for you. That is, if you can't wait till the fall.

By which point we expect the pixel for Abel probably have arrived. The Moto G stylus does have the added benefit of having a built-in passive stylus, and it is the only one of the lot to still offer a micros card slot. Those are the bit more money to spare, should consider the OnePlus 17, the last gen phone features, a beautiful build and a 6.5-inch full HD screen that runs at their smooth, 90 Hertz. It even supports HDR for richer image quality like the Moto G stylus, the OnePlus 70 offers a 48 megapixel triple camera system on its rear and a 16 megapixel sensor up front. It does cost a bit more than the others at $500, but it uses a powerful Snapdragon 855 processor.

There are, of course, several other sub $500 phones from the likes of TCL, LG, aces and Nokia, but honestly they don't quite hold up to our favorites here. Those looking for an alternative to the iPhone SE will appreciate that there are plenty of responsible options in that price range, but bear mine, they're all Android devices, if you're stuck on iOS, and you're, stuck with the iPhone SE, it's green and all offering flagship performance for a nice price, but you'll have to live with the outdated design and single camera setup. The next cheapest iPhone is the 10 R, which starts at $600 and doesn't get you more cameras or a better processor. You know it sounds like Apple fans, don't really have that many money-saving options and should probably get good at saving up or bargain hunting, whether you're, a team Apple or a hardcore Google nerd. We have reviews of all the iPhones pixels galaxies and a ton of other devices so make sure you subscribe to Engadget to stay informed.

As always. Thank you for watching you.
