Xperia 5ii vs Xperia 1ii: Watch This Before Buying!

Hey guys welcome back to channel I'm harry now, then this has been a brilliant year for fans of Sony's Xperia smartphone line. The Japanese giant has released not just one but two brilliant flagships within a relatively short space of time. So, first, earlier this summer we had the Xperia one mark ii, which remains my daily use phone, I'm trying to avoid the term daily driver. I've been using it solidly for three months and if you've been following the channel, you know how highly I think of this phone, but this week Sony also launched this, the smaller brother, if you like the Xperia 5 mark ii. Now these two phones are very similar in many regards, but there's one big difference. This is still a premium very expensive phone at 1 100 pounds here in the UK, whereas this is a slightly more affordable, 799 pounds.

But despite the big price difference, the five mark ii still packs many of the great features which make the one mark ii such a pleasure to use. So I thought we'd put these two phones side by side just to see how they compare in regard to hardware specs performance screen all that good stuff and at the end I will give you my honest verdict about whether you should buy this one or whether you should stump up the extra cash and go for this one before we get into that. I'd just like to thank all my new subscribers, it's brilliant to have you all on board and stay tuned for more great content if you haven't subscribed, yet I'd be ever so grateful if you'd consider doing so and also if you enjoy the video, don't forget to hit the like button. Thank you so much and let's get on with the video. So let's start with the hardware design, then so you can see they're both very similar, looking smartphones, both gorilla glass, 6 front and back.

This is the black color on the one mark ii and the blue on the Xperia 5 mark 2, it's hard to see the difference under artificial light, but believe me, this one looks blue. It's a kind of nice dark, blue, so gorilla, glass, 6 front and back ip68 water and dust resistance and a solid aluminum metal rail. All the way around these are the similarities. The immediate difference, as you can see, is quite clearly the size, so this is 6.1 inches on the diagonal, and this is a much larger, 6.5 inches and put side by side. You can see that there's a clear size difference now.

They both share this 21 by 9 aspect ratio, which makes them quite easy to hold, despite being so tall and thin. The other key difference is the one mark ii has a slightly different side arrangement, so it's much squarer there's a much sharper angle there. The five mark ii has slightly more rounded sides, not as rounded as something like the iPhone 11 but rounded. Nonetheless- and I must admit, I prefer the square sides of the one mark ii they're, both very slippery phones. This glass is almost frictionless, apart from that they have similar port arrangements, so USB port at the bottom, and they both have a headphone jack up top, which is fantastic.

Now there is one addition on the five mark ii and that's this button here so in between the camera shutter button and the fingerprint sensor stroke power button. There's this button, which is a Google Assistant button. Now I'm not a fan of a dedicated button for assistance. We had it, of course, on the Samsung with a Bixby button and although Google Assistant is more useful than Bixby, it's just not in a great place actually, and certainly, if I'm holding the phone like that, it's very easy, I think to accidentally trigger the Google Assistant button. So I'm not a fan of that.

I wonder whether google give Sony a kickback for including it. The other difference that you need to be aware about is that the five mark ii offers dual sim capability in the UK. So once again, there's that nice sim tray, which you can pull out to the fingernail. You don't need a sim removal tool, and you get the option now of either having two sim cards or a sim card and a SD card. Okay, so moving on to the screen now, and you can really notice that difference in size, so both have this 21 by nine aspect ratio, but the five mark ii is just far more compact.

Nevertheless, they're both glorious OLED screens. The one mark ii, of course has the 4k resolution, whereas the five mark ii is full HD plus. However, on a screen of this size and as I think you can appreciate from the video that's playing, they both look phenomenal they've both got these gorgeous natural colors, particularly if you put the phones in the creator mode which Sony offers. The resolution on both looks fantastic and I think you'll be hard-pressed to notice the difference, the secret weapon that the five mark ii has up its sleeves. Is if it's a 120 hertz refresh rate screen, the one mark ii is stuck at 60 hertz, although if you turn on the motion, smoothing feature that came with that phone, it's actually pretty excellent.

Everything in the interface feels so slick and smooth. So I think these are both excellent displays, and it'll be a matter of choice, really whether you fancy the higher resolution. Larger display or the lower resolution faster refresh rate, smaller display. So now, let's take a look at the hardware, specs, and they're actually very similar, so both phones come packing. The snapdragon 865 processors, not the x65, plus just the standard 865, which is plenty fast enough.

Both offer 5g support both come with eight gigs of ram as standard, but there is a difference in internal storage, because the one mark ii has two five six gigs and the five mark ii has 128 gigs. Now I still think 128 gigs is plenty. Both phones come with four thousand William hour batteries. Now I found that surprising. I thought the five mark ii would have a smaller battery.

Now, four thousand William hours isn't a lot in 2020, but surprisingly enough, it does a great job on the one mark ii, if you've seen my reviews of that you'll know that I'm very pleased with the battery life it easily gets me through the day without worrying about charging. Therefore, the slightly lower resolution screen, even if it is a high refresh rate, I'm confident that the five mark ii with the same capacity battery, will easily make it through the day charging wise. Both phones come with an 18 watt charger in the box, so he calls it fast charger, and it's fast enough, but it's not lightning quick, both come with all the clever battery, preserving features like the one that doesn't top it up to full charge until just before you wake up in the morning. If you leave it plugged in to try and extend the battery lifetime, not the battery life, the lifetime of the battery. There is one big difference, though, which may really bother you and, I think, is a bit of an omission on an 800 pound phone, and that is that the one mark ii does offer QI.

Wireless charging as you'd expect five mark ii, despite having a glass back. It doesn't offer that feature which is just bizarre, including the wireless charging coil, might have reduced the cooling efficiency. I'm not entirely sure because I believe the one mark ii has the same kind of cooling system, and that brings us on nicely to say that the performance of both phones in initial use anyway, both phones run a very, very similar to stock android experience. It's a very lightly skidded version of stock android 10. Neither of them has got android 11 yet, and I do hope that Sony stick to their supposed promise and keep updating both of these for the next three years like Samsung.

Does these are not cheap phones and to date I think Sony's had a pretty poor record of um updating, android versions. So next we come to the important subject on experience of camera and the one mark ii, as you know, has an excellent camera system. It's a triple lens set up with the equivalent of a 24 millimeter, 16 millimeters and 70 millimeter lenses with an additional time of flight sensor. Those are the four blobs that you can see and there's the flash and the microphone. So the five mark ii looks very, very similar uh again 16 24 70 millimeter focal length lenses with the mass t star coating same as the one mark ii same flash and microphone up there, but you will notice straight away that the fourth blob i.

e. , the timer flight sensor is gone. So the time flight sensor basically perceives depth, and it is lacking on the five mark ii, whether that makes a real world difference in photos, remains to be seen. Turning the phones around and on the front. You have an eight megapixel selfie camera, and I think that was the Achilles heel of the one mark ii.

It's really not a good front facing camera. Selfies don't come out very well at all. Again on the five mark ii, there appears to be the same. Eight megapixel sensor you've still got the stock camera app, which is okay. I don't think it's had any particular improvements over the one mark ii.

Then there's the photo pro app and the summer pro app, both of which are absolutely awesome. The only difference on the five mark ii is, it now can apparently shoot 4k 60 in the cinema pro app. So there you have it folks, that's my comparison of the Sony, Xperia 5 mark ii and the Sony Xperia 1 mark ii, they're both fantastic phones. My initial thoughts are that the five mark ii will appeal to far more people. It's just much more manageable.

It's got the high refresh rate screen, and it's obviously a load cheaper than the one mark ii. Now, don't let me take anything away from the one marked it's still one of my favorite phones of the year, but myself as well as many other tech reviewers have stated that it's a kind of niche product and one of the things that makes it niche is the huge price, and it's great that certainly you've managed to scale that down and include most of the features on the five mark ii. I think there are a few creases to be ironed out in both phones, and I can see that this Google Assistant button is going to annoy me on the 5 mark ii. It might get better when I put a case on it, I'm waiting to take delivery of a case from Amazon. I will update you on how that's going when I do the full review of that phone.

But let me know what you think: would you spend the extra money for the one mark 2, or would you be happy the five mark ii? If you do enjoy my content, I'd be ever so grateful for a like and a subscription would be out of this world. I'll see you soon in the next video I've got some greats Google Pixel 5 content coming up as well as much more on the Xperia 5 mark ii, so stay tuned folks stay safe, and I'll. See you soon. You.
