The new entry-level king? | Poco M3 unboxing & hands-on

Hey it's Rory with such. com um good morning. I know it's not like super often that we shoot in the morning, but today is a special day because we have a new phone. It's a brand new polo, m3 um, you know la Poco is very famous for being the really awesome penguin tank. I don't know how you going to translate that, but it's like cheap and good bang for buck device. Uh.

They made waves with book, x3 NFC and now, as we wrap the year up, they have another brand-new smartphone. I'm going to show it to all the cameras. It's the Poco m3. So as of the time of this recording, this phone hasn't launched. Yet so this is a bit of like um, um, um, pre-production stuff.

I think, but they've sent out the phone for us to check out uh beforehand. So here it is uh. Let's do a quick, unboxing, all right, so the Poco m3 so, like I said previously, they had they made waves with Poco x3 NFC easily. I think one of the best smartphones for under a thousand ringgit- or you know about the thousand ringgit mark, because the top spec one was one zero. Nine and I made a video about it and apparently all of you think that I hate it like what the which part of the video did, I not say, or rather I started.

I started the video saying that it was the best smartphone under a thousand ringgit and I ended it with it's, probably the best smartphone for under 1000 ringgits, and yet you people still think that I hate like hello. What like? Can you like what today uh they've got a new phone? It's the Poco m3 uh, and this is supposed to be even more affordable than the book x3 NFC um. It's got slightly more watered-down specs, but it's also like uh. You know it's an it's a strong contender, because this phone is supposed to be under 800 ringgits. We don't know how much yet, because at the time of this recording we don't have the price yet.

But you know: if we do know the price, then it will be in the video description, and I'll also pin a comment to our YouTube channel. So you might want to check that out uh when this launches okay but yeah. This is the new entry-level smartphone. So it's supposed to be entry level like probably about seven, eight hundred, maybe even less uh, we'll get into that a bit later, but yeah. Let's take a look at the smartphone wow, so we pop the lid a classic Poco black and yellow black and yellow uh.

If we pop this you've got a silicone case. Okay, pretty standard stuff. This time, there's no like Poco branding, was it poker branding on the previous one? Why am I thinking of another phone? You've got some paper warranty information, and this is a screen protector, so they include a screen protector, but instead of sticking it to the smartphone, like most manufacturers do these days, they give you one like um outside the smartphone. So if you want this cheap plastic screen protector, you can apply it later. So that's probably better for that.

Enthusiast like people like me, I don't like the screen protector, because when you take photos, or you shoot videos, you can see all the rainbow stuff so underneath that you get the smartphone the book m3, but we'll take a look at that a little underneath this paper thing you get no headphones, but there is an USB cable. It's an a2c, cable and also a charging brick. So this brick is a 22.5 watt, uh fast charging, brick. But interestingly, the smartphone doesn't support 22.5 wide charging, but again we'll get into that later. So that's all you get in the box uh.

There is no other fancy stuff like headphones or whatever, but you know that's like pretty standard for Poco smartphones, but this is the device. So, as you can see straight up, you have the four main specs you've got the 48 megapixel AI, triple camera, which to me sounds a bit disingenuous. But you know there is a 6 000 William hour battery uh. There is a 6.53 inch, full HD, plus dot drop display, and there is a Qualcomm snapdragon 662 processors at its core, interesting specs, for a smartphone under 800 ringgits, so for the plus plastic okay. So when we first saw like the leaks for this device right, it looked like this spoon, like was gonna, have some kind of leathery textured, like I don't know fabric almost back because of the way it looked on photos but holding it here listening to it uh.

This is definitely plastic. It's like plastic. It's not even like plastic, trying to be glass or plastic, trying to be metal or plastic trying to not be plastic. This is just full on my v plastic, so you do get like this texture at the back. That I don't know if you can see, but you get this sort of like texture.

It looks from a distance like uh. It could be some kind of fabric like some fake leather, but it's not it's very plastic. Uh Poco calls this the anti fingerprint back. Yeah, sure fingerprints definitely won't stick on it, but, as you can see, it's already a bit greasy from my greasy fingers, but probably the most obvious thing about this smartphone in terms of design is that camera module so, like you know, people are complaining people. I grew back in my day.

People always complain what the camera bump very big, wow, very big, very thick, don't like! I want flush. I want flat. Furthermore, I want no camera bump, but Poco is just like no camera bump. Yes, it's like big. It's like huge.

This reminds me of like the ASUS before AR or the cyberpunk OnePlus 8t exactly the same, but instead of cyberpunk design, you get p-o-c-o at the top here. I guess they're really going in on their branding. The previous x3 NFC had a huge Poco branding here also, but that was like more into the glass. This is like just like they stuck a sticker on it um, but you know I'm going to say I don't hate the look. I think it's like it's like it's its unique, it's uh identifiable and to me that's like really important when it comes to like a smartphone.

The last thing you want is, when you flip your phone over to all the phones, look exactly the same uh so kudos for the uh slight twist on design. Now, if we're going to move around the side, so the whole plastic bag is like it's. It's almost like a. I don't know. We want to call it an unibody plastic bag, but yeah it's basically, it curves all the way to the side uh without any seam um over.

Here you get a fingerprint scanner power button. You get volume rockers, and then you also get a sim tray. You get headphone jack, um and then there's an IR blaster here, headphone jack, Io, blaster wow. What's this 2017, then at the bottom there's also an USB port as well as a speaker grille, and this should be like a microphone grill, so um. Let's turn this smartphone on and there you go all right, so Poco m3, let's, let's start with the specs okay, we've gone through the body.

We've gone through design, let's start with the specs, so this smartphone um, as I said earlier, it's part by a snapdragon 662 processors, which is sort of like their mid-range but more towards the low-end kind of mid-range processor um. It is not going to be like a 720 or a 765 that kind of level. It's a like one tier below that um, then, for this smartphone you're, getting four gigs of ram uh lpddr4x memory and either 64 or 128 gigs of internal storage. So the interesting thing about the internal storage is that it is actually UFS storage, so the 64 one, I believe, is UFS 2.0, whereas the 128 one is UFS 2.1. So that's pretty good for a budget smartphone, mostly you're, getting like eMMC at least, and that's that's like the common practice.

Of course there are, you know, exceptions, but you know they're not that common up front. There is a 6.5 inch, full HD display, so it's full HD, plus that's a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels, so yeah, it's pretty crisp. This is like standard stuff, at least you're, not getting a 720p or a HD plus display. So that's really nice to see, but there is no fast refresh rate this time it is 60 hertz um, but then again this is a much lower price point, so I wouldn't be expecting that kind of refresh rate either keeping the lights on, though, is probably the smartphone's party piece. It's a 6 000 William hour battery.

That is huge, even in 2020 standards uh. So it's really nice to see on any smartphone and especially when it comes to like a budget device um. Of course there is no such thing as wireless charging, but there is fast wired charging uh via the USB c port, but the fast wire charging is 18 watts, even though they include like a 22.5 watt charger in the box. This smartphone only supports 18 watts, fast charging and then, of course, like with the big battery, there's like a power bank mode where reverse wired charging, so you can like charge up other devices, but in my experience that's like not very efficient, so I wouldn't go around saying that you have a power bank for a smartphone and then around back you've got a triple camera setup. So the reason why, at first I said it was like it sounded a bit disingenuous, is because you've got the 48 megapixel wide angle, camera uh.

So this is pretty common sensor that we see on a lot of devices. Nowadays, it has a one f, 1.79, aperture lens uh, it's a wide angle, camera. Of course. It also does 41 pixel binning for better low light performance, but the other two cameras, one is a two megapixel depth sensor and the final one is a two megapixel macro camera, which I mean I yeah. They are extra cameras, but I hate.

I hate it when people say like this is a triple camera setup when it's a macro in the depth camera it's just like it just feels it just feels a bit wrong because most of the time you're going to be using your ultra-wide anyway, and the resolution on the macro camera is so low that like. Why would you even bother with it like why up front, though there is an 8, megapixel, selfie shooter that lives in this little um cutout, that's a notch! It's a dew drop. I don't know what else you want to call it, but yeah it's there. It's not a punch hole display. Unfortunately, so if you like that, and you don't like the little like v-shaped teardrop, not v-shaped, here drop notch, then you wouldn't like uh this one.

But for me, it's pretty out of the way and I don't really care about it. But yeah. Let's see how like the 48 megapixel camera like works. Let me take a this. Is our length eye camera man um? There is no telephoto, so you don't have to telephoto, but here's like a HDR try and get a picture of our name and then let's do.

Let's do a selfie too, lets selfie gotta say not a very good camera. The main camera is pretty like it's. Okay, like it's what you expect from this kind of price point, but the selfie camera is like awful. Considering like we have this gorgeous lighting setup here, and I still look like a zombie. Maybe it's Mila, but you know, and then of course, like I said earlier, there is a side mounted fingerprint scanner, not my favorite position, but you know a lot of you do like it and for what it's worth often like Xiaomi ones, are pretty accurate and pretty responsive.

So I wouldn't like hate on it. Uh. It also has face unlocking but again uh. There is no like depth sensor or anything. So it's not.

I don't think it's like as secure as like face ID, but there is face unlocking if you like that, but my favorite feature of this smartphone has to be the fact that it actually has uh stereo speakers or dual speakers whatever it is that you want to call it, and I actually haven't heard it yet, so I'm going to try it out now. On the surface, this looks like a clear-cut victory for team, one plus, but having used both of these smartphones for about a week, I have to say that it's not quite that simple you see. Well, I agree that the OnePlus 8t has the better value on paper. I am okay. This is not bad.

Actually, it's not super loud, and it's clearly biased towards the bottom firing speaker, but I think in general yeah this is. This is pretty good for, like an affordable, smartphone, good job, but yeah. That's pretty much all you need to know or all we know right now of the Poco m3 smartphone, so it's entry level, smartphone, uh and being entry level. The most important thing about this device is probably going to be going to be the price. So we don't know how much it's gonna cost uh right now but, like I said, if, if we do know, you know it'll be in the video description, it will be in the comments uh below I'll leave a pin, comment um, but it's also very important that we discuss like how much so less than 800.

Okay. So you have liked it's quite a competitive market down there. I think um. We were talking about in office and I think for this phone to be really competitive, it should be priced at about like 599 or 699 ringgits like that would be like a pretty sweet spot because they're two variants, if you get both the entry level, maybe five, nine, nine, four, nine, the top spec uh 699, maybe seven, nine. I think that would be pretty good, but if it goes to 799 you're also competing with the Poco x3 NFC.

So then that becomes like. Why would you choose this over the x3 when x3 is clearly the better smartphone? So pricing is very important and at that price point you're competing with devices like the Redmi 9, which is again like a perfect device, of course, that has a MediaTek hello g80 but g80 in terms of performance. I believe it benchmarks better than this processor uh, but, like I think, like five to eight percent so like it's, not a huge delta uh and the Redmi 9 has a triple camera that has a quad camera set up, and it actually has like a proper wide angle camera. So, if you're into like more versatility and photography, that's probably a better device, but again that has like a smaller battery. It's a 5 000 20 million powers versus 6 000.

So this is still like. The battery king uh it'd be interesting to see how much this is priced and from there you know. Would this be like the next like big smartphone? I don't think so personally, because, like just using it, the experience is like quite different from like a x3 NFC like a x3 NSC, I could say that you're getting like maybe 90, of the performance for like an affordable flagship or even maybe like a perfect premium mid-range device, this one it feels entry level, and it should because again it's an entry-level device. So again it's not a rack, but you know I would probably, depending on the price, I would probably still say that the sweet spot so the x3 and FC. I always recommend like about 1000 ringgits, if you're buying an affordable smartphone, but this could be another option like I said for the more budget, conscious of you.

So what do you think of the Poco m3 uh? Do you think this will be the next device for you? What do you think of the price you know? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments section below um, but yeah. That's pretty much it for this video. If you like this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up, don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel and uh. You know hit the notification bell icon, so you see more of this like exclusive pre-launch content, even though it's coming up after the launch um but yeah, so you'll be notified whenever we post a new video we're also on Facebook uh, but our home on the internet will always be at surgeonship. com.

So until the next video I will see you, then I'm Rory signing off bye.
