The Greatest BlackBerry That Never Happened - The Android Passport!

Hey everybody welcome back to tech odyssey, so I'm here today to talk a little about an interesting topic and one, I think, was a big miss on the part of blackberry, not just because it didn't happen, but because it should have happened, and I'm talking about the blackberry passport. Of course, this phone did happen. It was created, it was brought into existence, but there was actually a model that they had running android, that I guess they were testing out around the time the PRI came out, and it didn't see the light of day as far as for us consumers, but there actually is some video floating out there showing a passport clearly running android, and I think this would have been probably a big hit. It just didn't happen, and I want to talk about this, but before we get into all that, I do want to say if this is your first time stopping by the channel. I appreciate you being here if you enjoyed the video, please hit the like and the subscribe button and little notification bell if you want updates when new videos come out now, let's talk about the passport, so everybody knows about the blackberry passport. The blackberry passport is a very iconic device.

A lot of people even still today, keep saying hey. I really want a blackberry passport, that's running android. I would totally use that and I have to say I would totally use it too. Furthermore, I think that that would be probably the smartest move that they could make right now, because one it doesn't have the smaller screen size like a lot of the other blackberries, the classic, the q10 all that stuff. But at the same point in time you still get the physical keyboard, and you get the nostalgia effect, because so many people really did like this phone.

Like it's a really, really nice looking phone, especially the silver version, they could kind of tweak a couple of things and make it a little more modern. But at the same point in time, fantastic speaker, setup, beautiful screen and yeah, it's just got a really nice, sleek and professional form factor very, very iconic look, and I love it, especially the silver edition. But there was in about august 2015 a video that surfaced showing one of these blackberry passports, which was designed and operating blackberry 10. It was running android, so we know that blackberry was experimenting with it, but it never saw the light of day. I don't know if that's because they were dedicating their resources to the blackberry PRI, and we're really hoping that would pan out.

Maybe they thought well, since the passport didn't sell that. Well I mean it did so well initially, it was like 225 000 units like the day or the week that it came out. It had some perfect movement for a blackberry, 10 phones on launch, but things just weren't going all that well in blackberry, world pun intended blackberry land up in Waterloo, so they decided to ditch blackberry, 10 moves over make the blackberry prim. I think this is where the money would have been, though, because so many people really love the passport, and maybe they thought that somebody just bought the blackberry passport. They wouldn't ditch that and then turn around and buy an android version.

I mean me being a blackberry addict and somebody who loves phones, I would but for a normal person that probably isn't something that would have happened. So I think what they were trying to do when they created the PRI was not only to keep the spirit alive with the blackberry phone, but also try and get people on board who already used android or had left and gone to android, and then, I believe, blackberry hoped they would come back that didn't work. It really didn't, and the blackberry PRI had so many problems- the battery life, the processor, the overheating the camera was lagging there was a lot of stuff that was there as far as shortfall wise, that I think it just a lot of. It was the hardware really now they did make a secure operating system. They did make a perfect touch keyboard for back, then it was probably the best, if not one, of the best, and then you had this guy right here, the passport sitting right underneath their nose right in the palm of their hands, probably some of them even in their pocket.

I love this phone. I had the white one. Furthermore, I had the black one. Furthermore, I had the silver one. Furthermore, I had a whole collection of these things, and I'm sure some of you people watching this video can probably think back then and thought yeah.

Furthermore, I probably had a couple of them too. Even had the ATT variant and I wish they would have made a Porsche one that never happened so had they from the get-go made at least an android and a blackberry version. This, I think it would have been really successful and then also when they were deciding to make an android phone. I think that this would have been the best choice. They had the hardware already they had the phones.

I think they probably could have gone ahead and set it up and, like I said there was some footage out there showing that it was clearly running android. They got it to work, and it already had an android runtime with the emulation. So I think it would have been a great idea and I think it would have done well. I think that a lot of people would have received it well, but I think there were some issues too because of this square screen see back in the day when android was kind of still in its infant stages. It didn't have all the different resolution and aspect ratio support.

So it was very difficult to get some apps to show up properly on this square screen and that's just the way that it was. It worked great for blackberry, but it didn't work so good for android, because all the android form factors were all they're all rectangles they're, all like 16 by nine. So there was a problem there. I believe- and also probably some other logistics with the internal hardware, since it was originally built for blackberry 10, maybe not so much for android, but they did get it to work and yeah. I think maybe also they might have sawed the writing on the wall and just weren't expecting a lot.

So they didn't want to divert more money and resources to try and make it happen, because I think a lot of people really would have hopped on board and would have been happy with it, and it would have been like a normal blackberry. People were already familiar with. I don't think that the classic, I don't think the z10, the q10. I don't think they had the hardware and the horsepower to push android, but this guy right here, I think, did and even looking at it now. Furthermore, I think that it would be a tremendous success if they were to put android on one of these like if they were to go ahead and take this design retool it and make it a little more modern or even just do an identical copy and bring this out.

This would actually kind of be considered a small phone now, and I think that when you look at the classic, I think when you look at the q10 or the old, bold or the 8800, I think some people really look at those now and think those are too small. Those screens are too small, so we don't want something like that. We've got a six plus inch screen on all of our phones over here. Why would we go back to that little baby phone and I can hear the arguments right now, so I think this might offer some of the best of both worlds. It gives you the familiarity and the nostalgia- that's really built in and ingrained with this phone, a lot of people really like this phone.

I mean I love it and then, on top of that, I think they could do it at a decent price. It feels very premium and yes, clearly onward. Mobility is doing whatever they're doing with their phone. Now that they're going to bring out it's supposed to be different, it's not going to be a rehash of an old phone, but I think with the second phone. They could really get away with something like this.

If they were to put like a snapdragon 765 in here, give it six to eight gigabytes of ram, give it 125 gigs of storage but give it expandable storage. I mean basically the same phone just with modern stuff, upgraded camera, specs and a newer battery. I think it would sell like hotcakes among blackberry buyers, and I think that it would probably draw some other people overlook at how successful the titan was with universe. Yes, it's not selling millions of phones, but in the small batch design that they're going with building it as they're getting enough people to buy them. It's shown that it's a working model, so if , under their licensing agreement and with whatever financial and logistical prowess that they have over a uni-hertz company, I think that this would be doable, and I think that people would be really, really happy about it.

It would be one of those things where people are like. Oh, the passport's back, and I would be really excited about it. Like I picked this up, I even put my sim card in here. It's actually got 4g LTE on Google phi we've got. Google phi in here works perfectly fine, no issues.

So when I use it, though, the browser is dated, a lot of the apps are dated. The android runtime is dated. A lot of stuff is not supported. If I had a modern android operating system on here, I would totally be using this phone right now like it would be great so onward, mobility. If you watch this video, and you're listening, I want one of these and there are other people that want one too.

So can we make that happen anyway? That's just it's a little of a pipe dream here. I don't really expect it to happen realistically, but how cool would that be? I think this would make a lot of people really, really happy and if they sold it at the right price and didn't overly stack the deck with the inventory and just kind of see how the market reacts to it. Furthermore, I think that it could be a winning strategy, and it's already got the name and the brand recognition just refresh it and throw it out on the street and see what happens. So. That's all I've got in this video, but maybe some you all didn't know that they actually did get a version of this phone with android on it.

It never left the developer's office. It never made it out, so anybody could actually use one other than it being a prototype, but I think that there's a foundation there that could really be exploited take some of that science and technology that they put into it. The first time bring it out in the market today that that would be great. So that's all I've got if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them down in the comment section I'll get back with you.
