The Google Pixel 5s is NOT what you think

So, what is the Google Pixel 5s? Is it a real phone? Will it ever see the light of day and, if not, then, what's in these photos, claiming to show a special variant of the Google Pixel 5. Take a sec to subscribe to android central here on YouTube, and we'll jump into exactly what's going on with the pixel 5s, so photos leaked out on Twitter recently showing a pre-production google phone resembling Pixel 4a with dual rear cameras and slimmer bezels. This is an eat unit, meaning engineering validation testing, which means it's a very early device intended to iron out bugs in the pixel's hardware before it moves on to the later stages of development, the sticker on the back of the device points to a manufacturing date of April 8th. So it is a few months old. We can also tell it's an older unit because it's running a pre-beta version of android 11, which in this photo is still calling itself android r we've seen this kind of pre-production pixel leaked in the past, with the Google g logo on the back twisted into something that looks a bit like an alien alphabet. Lots of companies disguise the branding on pre-release phones intended for use out in the wild, and there are other identifying marks intended to thwart leakers, some of which are covered here, but whoops looks like those barcodes do still reveal the phone's IMEI number.

The conventional wisdom when this pixel 5s first leaked out was that it could be a higher end variant of the pixel 5, possibly with millimeter wave 5g technology built in. But the fact that this is an old unit, clearly running old firmware gives us clues as to its true origins. Another clue came to us at android central recently. As news of the pixel 5 and pixel 4 a5g's arrival broke. Our sources revealed that, in fact, the names of Google's 2020 pixels had changed throughout the year.

As the company grappled with delays to the Pixel 4a's rollout caused by covet 19. The original plan we're told, was to the Pixel 4a 5g code named bramble, to be named pixel 5, while the second smaller and more premium pixel code named Redfin would carry another name to signify its higher status and based on the time frame for Redfin entering the eat stage, and the fact that this leaked device is running old firmware. I'm pretty confident I can solve the riddle of the pixel 5s, just as bramble was planned to be the pixel 5. At some point, I believe Redfin was planned to be the pixel 5s, a smaller and more premium version of that bass model, pixel 5. That original pixel 5, of course, being bramble the phone.

We now know as the Pixel 4a 5g we're told the names of bramble and Redfin change multiple times throughout the phone's development and CCA's. Michelle Rahman found additional evidence that bramble was at one point also called pixel 4axl, so the timelines of both devices might have looked something a little like this, but then why the name change? Well, I believe the original naming convention of pixel, 5 and 5s does make more sense in the alternate universe. Good timeline of 2020, where there's no coronavirus and where the Pixel 4a launched on time at Google, I o in May in that world, the 4a could enjoy a solid 4 months of sales before the premium pixels arrived in the fall, but in our current bad 2020 timeline, pixel 4 iPhones are only just now making their way out to consumers a couple of weeks before the expected arrival of two new pixel models. So google, understandably, might have felt that launching two phones with five in their name so soon after the Pixel 4a might make that phone seem unnecessarily dated. What's more, it's just a weird year for pixels in general, as google hits the reset switch on the traditional small plus XL dynamic that we've seen in every previous pixel release, while also moving away from the snapdragon 800 series.

Bramble and Redfin defy google's usual pixel naming conventions. There's not that much difference in size and the smaller one is actually the higher spec one. Although all three 2020 pixels share design similarities, the internal hardware of bramble and Redfin is close enough to basically make them two variants of the same phone. Powered of course, by Qualcomm snapdragon, 765g chipset, but with its plastic body, 60hz display and larger screen borders. Bramble also has quite a lot in common with the Pixel 4a, so the naming was always going to be awkward with brambles, straddling both Pixel 4a and pixel 5 territory.

Hence, the slightly clumsy compromise name that we ultimately ended up with the Pixel 4a 5g and as such, with the pixel 5 names vacated, the pixel 5s reverted to just being plain old, pixel 5. The original names show a little of Google's thinking when it comes to these premium pixels, the lineup actually makes more sense, if you think of bramble as your base model, pixel, 5 and Redfin is a smaller sleeker and more refined version of that built on similar hardware foundations. The latest leaks, don't show us anything fascinating in terms of the phone itself. It is ultimately just a pixel 5 after all, but it does show us that google was until recently still grappling with how its new and quite different lineup of phones should be presented to the world. That's it for now be sure to subscribe.

So you don't miss our coverage of the pixel 4 a5g and pixel 5 when they land thanks for watching, and I'll, see you next time you.
