Tech Talk | iPhone 12 Pro Max Unboxing & Thoughts

Hello today we will be unboxing the new iphone iPhone 12 Pro max because it has just arrived, and it's been a while, since I have unboxed an iPhone because last time I bought an iPhone was the 10s which I'm still currently using, but well I'll talk a little more about why I upgraded in a second. So it is about 3 30 on Friday, the 13th, and that is when ups dropped off my new iPhone. So I'm filming this as quickly as possible so that we still have light to actually do this unboxing, it's been a while, since I've actually even had a phone shipped to me because the last time I picked up a phone uh. My new phone was two years ago, and I went to the Apple Store and I lined up at 5 30 in the morning, and there was nobody in line. If you haven't seen that vlog, I will um link it here or here and uh yeah. It was quite embarrassing.

I called ahead to the store, and they had told me that people were lining up for the new iPhone, and that was a 10s at the time, but I got there the next morning and there was definitely no one lined up just me, but this is the new phone very exciting you can kind of already tell which color I got the box kind of spoils the surprise, but lets uh flip you around and unbox okay, so we're all set up um boxes, a little thinner than previous years, definitely a much easier box to open. Nowadays, they make nice little tabs for everything. Oh, the blue looks really nice. This is my second time seeing this color in person. I checked out the 12 pros when I was getting my MacBook repaired or picking up my MacBook from repair, and I really love this color very fingerprints.

Let's just put it down, I'm sure you guys all know by now what is and or isn't I guess in the box. So this is new. It does look really nice stainless steel edges reminiscent of the iPhone 5. It is a big phone. This is in comparison to my current phone, which is the 10s.

This is how they look. I have been using the 12 pro max now for a few days, so I'm going to share what I like and don't like, and just my general thoughts about this new phone. I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I did get the 512 gigabyte model. Obviously, in the pacific blue, which I love the color, I have seen all four colors in person, and I was really debating between this and also the gold. I usually gravitate towards the gold.

I've had a lot of different colored iPhones um throughout my iPhone history and most colorway, I've probably gone with is gold just because I don't know I like the color, but I did decide to go with the blue this year, because I am a sucker for blue, and I just really love this color, although, like I said the gold for the 12 pros this year is absolutely stunning um, but I just had to go with the blue, so I am upgrading from the 10s so throughout this video, this is the phone that I will be mainly comparing the 12 pro max to, because this is the phone that I'm coming from if you're coming from the 11 pro max, it's probably not as exciting for you, because I don't feel like there's that much of a tech bump between the 12 and the 11, but if you're coming from a two-year-old phone or older, it is a pretty exciting new phone. My upgrade cycle is usually two years, so I usually get a phone every other year and I think there's only one year that I got a phone consecutively and that's just because I had broken the phone. So I had to get a new one anyway, but usually I do upgrade a phone every two years. I really don't feel like there is that much of a tech bump between a single year that really warrants an upgrade. So I'm really excited about this particular upgrade, because I feel like I'm getting a lot more features.

When I upgraded from the 7 to the 10s, I was getting obviously the full screen display and face ID, and I didn't really feel like it was necessary to upgrade from the 10s to the 11, because there wasn't that much of a difference except for the extra camera, and the main reason I actually didn't upgrade is that this generation phone, the 10s, is the last generation with 3d touch, there's something very satisfying about pressing down on the screen and getting that haptic feedback. But since the iOS 14 release, they've, actually removed 3d touch from their interface, which is really upsetting. I really miss 3d touch. They actually also removed it from the watch OS, which also is very upsetting, because I use the 3d touch on the watch even more than I did on the phone anyway. That's something I really miss um.

So, even though this phone has the capability for 3d touch, they eliminated that feature altogether. So it's its basically useless. Anyway, aside from the two-year phone upgrade cycle, I wanted to get a new phone, because the battery life on this was really, really bad. So that's why I went with the max version. Instead, I still think that this size is the perfect size.

The new 12 pros are actually a hint larger than this. I think they're like 0.2, of an inch bigger in terms of screen size, but I still think that the smallest of the pro models is the perfect size. It fits comfortably in the hand. It's really easy to navigate the whole screen. Furthermore, it fits in everything you never have to worry about it, but I wanted to upgrade the battery and in order to upgrade the battery you have to go with a bigger phone.

I also really like the bigger screen. I was really torn when I was picking up this phone, whether to go for the max version, because that's the first year that they came out with the max version, and I was very torn about it because I like the big screen, but I was worried about the size of the phone. The bow has the 11 pro max right now, and I would use it occasionally honestly, it's not that cumbersome of a size, especially maybe for this day and age, with COVID-19 and most of the time I'm at home, and I'm always just kind of using my phone two-handed anyway. I don't really feel like it's that cumbersome that may change. Once I go back to work and once everything starts up again, I might have to buy like a loopy case or something, so I can hang on to this phone a little better, but I do love the big screen and that's why I upgraded to the max version.

So what is new with the 12 pro, like, I said, a lot more things are new for me because I'm coming from a two-year-old phone, but this one does come with 5g. It's really not a selling point for me, because 5g in Canada is really spotty to begin with, and also I am with Fido, which is kind of like a budget carrier, and they don't even offer 5g. So if I did want to use 5g in the very limited spots that I can use it, I would have to upgrade to like belle or rogers, or, I think, Telus as a carrier, and I don't really want to pay 100 for a phone plan. My phone plan right now with Fido is 55, and I think I get six gigs of data and unlimited minutes, Canada wide, which is perfect. For me, it's exactly what I need.

I don't really need that much because most of the time I'll be at home, where I have Wi-Fi, or I'll be in the office where I have Wi-Fi, so I don't really need like 30 gigs of data, but yeah 5g is something that this phone has, but it's not something that I use. I don't even use LTE actually, because, where I am sometimes LTE tends to drop a lot more than 3g is just you know: it's not the fastest, but she's reliable. So that's what I usually use. So obviously this is a faster phone. I don't even feel like it's necessary to say that, because it's just stating the obvious new phone, obviously faster chip um, but it is fast and even the face ID I notice is a little quicker than the 10s.

I do really like the look of this phone, and I'll show you guys a comparison of this versus all the other iPhones that I happen to have access to right now. Furthermore, I still actually have an old version, not the old version, but the old iPhone 5. Um. It's at my parents house I had my mom bring it over when she was visiting. So I could do this comparison, because the 12 series phones this year have been designed with the iPhone 5 in mind.

So, instead of being curved on the edges, they are flat and more boxy, which I've always really liked. I've always liked the design of the iPhone 5s. It's just compared to the phones. Now it's a little small and also the edges on the 12 pros- is stainless steel, as opposed to aluminum, which obviously is very prone to your fingerprints, but it's really easy to wipe away and for the most part I keep the phone in a case. So I don't have to worry about scratches.

So I'm going to show you now a comparison of the 5, the 10s, the 11 pro max and also the 12 pro max. So you can just see the difference of the sizes and just kind of how the iPhones have evolved over the years. I have had a lot of different iPhones over the past. It's I think I started with the four and then the five, and then I got the six plus the seven, the 10s and now the 12 pro max. So obviously the most similar phones would be the 11 pro max and the 12 pro max.

They are similar in size, although the 12 pro max is the biggest phone that apple has created to date. It is, I think, 0.2 of an inch bigger than the 11 pro max, so it does have a slightly bigger screen size. So, let's talk about what I like about the phone. There are many things to like about this phone, and one of them is the camera. I love taking photos.

I take photos of everything. Most of the time is really random. Most of the time, my photos are not the best, but I like to take photos of things so that I can just keep a memory of it and especially over the last few months ever since I had Chloe, if you didn't know that I had a baby, I did, and she's about nine months old now, but I take if you look through my camera roll. It's basically just all photos of Chloe and then the occasional food shot, but I love to take photos and having the best camera on a phone is great, because this is really the camera that I have with me 99.9 of the time. So I do really love the new camera quality in this phone and compared to the 10s that I'm coming from.

I have an extra camera here, so, as you can see, the 10s only has two cameras and then the 12 pro max has three cameras. The 10s has the wide and then the telephoto. So the wide is just like your standard camera lens and the telephoto is your zoom lens versus the 12 pro max, which has the wide the telephoto and then the ultra-wide. I will say that I don't really use ultrawide that often, but when I do, I'm always really pleased with the photo that I get the telephoto on the 12 for max also crops in a little closer in the 11s and the 10s. It only is like a two times zoom, but in the 12 pro max it is a 2.5 time zoom. You already probably know this, but the cameras on the 12 pro max are also slightly better than the cameras on the 12 pros.

I guess it's just you know bigger phone, so they can fit bigger sensors in this. The front facing camera on this phone is also a big upgrade from the 10s. The 10s only had a 7 megapixel and then the 12 pro max has a 12 megapixel, which is good and bad, because I took a selfie of myself before I started filming this video just so that we could compare, and I'll show you guys them here now, but the tennis, it almost looks like there's like a little of a smoothing filter on this on the skin. So I kind of almost prefer that a little better, because the 12 pro max the front facing camera is very sharp, it's very clear, but that is not always a good thing, especially when you are looking at photos of yourself. I wanted to also show you guys quickly the improvements of the camera compared to the 10s, which obviously isn't a fair comparison, because I am comparing the latest iPhone with a two-year-old phone, but just so that you can see it for yourself.

The differences between the two I'm just looking at the comparison on my iPads here. These are some photos I just randomly took inside my home this morning, while Chloe was having some independent play time in front of the Christmas tree. So all these photos are of the Christmas tree that we just put up. So you can see the 10s on the left and the 12 pro max on the right. As you can see, the 12 for max is generally brighter.

It gives a little more of a crisp detailed photo, especially in low light because of night mode and also the new LIDAR sensor, so the LIDAR sensor actually uses lasers to ping off objects or people, and the amount of time it takes for that laser to come back into the sensor is how they determine how close an object is. So it's perfect for focusing on low light an example of the night mode in action and also the LIDAR sensor would be um in this photo of Chloe. She is very much more in focus on the 12 per max than she is in the 10s and also there's a little of movement. Obviously she doesn't sit still for very long. The 12 pro max does definitely give a quicker, cleaner snapshot than the 10s, and I want to show you guys, also portrait mode, because that's something new with the 12 pro max, I'm not sure.

If it's available with the 11 pros with the 12 pro max, you can now take photos of objects in portrait mode which you can't do with the 10s. So here is a portrait shot of a Christmas ornament. So with the 10s you can see it's just a photo of the Christmas ornament. It's a little hazy and then, with the 12 pro max. You can see that there's like a really um great depth of field there.

Just for fun. I thought I would throw in a comparison of the iPhone 5 and the 12 pro max. Obviously, the 124 max is a little better, but compared to the iPhone 5 considering it is, it's got to be at least a six or eight-year-old phone. This picture isn't bad. Obviously, there's not a lot of detail.

The color contrast is, you know, meh, it's very hazy looking, but you know it could be worse. Next is the screen size? I love the screen size again. I was worried about the screen size or just like the phone size in general, but it's actually been really nice. It's very comfortable, surprisingly comfortable to hold in the hand I haven't, dropped it yet, which is a good thing, and although I can't quite reach all the way to the other side of the phone with one hand, most of the time, I'm using it with two hands and I can get away decently with one-handed use having the bigger screen size is great for media consumption. It's also great for when I'm reading the news on, like the Apple news, app or checking emails, a little more just fits on the page or even when I'm browsing the web, or something like that.

I can see a little more on the page than I can with the 10s or the smaller size. I also really like sending messages on this phone, because obviously the bigger size phone means a bigger keyboard, and it just is nice and comfortable to text or send messages or emails through. Furthermore, I haven't had a phone this size since I owned the six plus and I actually downgraded from the six plus to the seven, because I was dropping the six plus all the time. But since then I did discover this case. Manufacturer called the loopy and I actually don't have one yet because they don't have a case that I like available for this phone yet and everything's on pre-order, because this is so new.

Not a lot of manufacturers. Case makers have made cases for this phone yet, like I said earlier, another reason I upgraded was for a bigger battery um. I was living my life on the 10s over the last year in perpetual low power mode. I actually created a shortcut automation using the shortcuts app so that every time that I would unplug my phone from the charger, it would automatically put my put me into low power mode because I just could not get through a day without it and even in low power mode, especially when I was still working, and I was on my phone more regularly. Furthermore, I still had to charge my phone halfway through the day.

Otherwise, I would get home and my phone would be just basically a metal brick. So the bigger battery is definitely great. I mean right now because of COVID-19 I'm home a lot, and even just because of Chloe. We happen to be home a lot. So if I needed to charge, I have lots of chargers lying around, but I can get through almost a day and a half without charging my phone, so a full day like about eight hour usage of the phone throughout the day um.

I won't even have to charge it overnight, and then I'll probably still have like 30 when I wake up in the morning, and I could probably still use my phone for an hour, maybe two before I had to charge it. So the last thing I'm excited for about this phone is the potential of MagSafe. So MagSafe is a new feature on the new 12 series, where it has basically a built-in magnet on the back, so that one you can still wirelessly charge and two. It actually allows you to magnetically connect, MagSafe compatible accessories to your phone. I'm really excited to see what other MagSafe accessories come with the phone, because I have always loved magnetically mounting my phone to my car mount in the car.

I think it's really easy and convenient, and it's like my favorite way to mount a phone in your car. They have already come out with a MagSafe compatible car mount, but it is a vent mount which I actually can't use for my vehicle. So this is what the vent mount looks like. So this just clips onto your vent, but my vents swivel um they're, not stationary. They kind of move around in lots of different directions, so I can't put this on because it just wobbles around too much, and it doesn't securely connect to the vent mount.

So what I like to use is a mount with a suction cup, but they haven't come out with one like that yet, but I am excited about the MagSafe, because what I used to do this is on the back of my 10s leather case. Inside this case, I attach a magnet so that I could, when the case is on my phone mount it magnetically you'll notice, though how low it is. Obviously I would prefer to have the magnet in the middle, because then it would securely connect to the magnet a little better, but because I don't want to block the wireless charger I had to put it lower so that you know I could still use the mount, but also still wirelessly charged with the integration of MagSafe. I don't have to worry about this, though, so I am excited about the potential of MagSafe. Just gotta wait and see what other accessories come out.

I'm filming in front of a window right now, which is why the lighting is so crazy, so I am trying to do my best to kind of keep an eye on it where I normally film is our office, but the beau is working from home today, so he has that space, so I'm filming in front of a window. So let's talk about what I don't like about this phone and there isn't really that many um one thing is really just more of an inconvenience, and it's face ID before Ovid face ID was perfect. It worked really well. I could just unlock my phone by looking at it. It just felt really seamless to do that.

However, with COVID-19 and having to wear a mask having face ID is more of an inconvenience now, because it's just you always have to put your passcode in any way. So that's like my one gripe. I wish that they would have reintegrated something like touch ID in the power button which they did for the iPad. The other thing I don't like about this phone is really just an iOS issue, and that is how underutilized the screen is. So this phone is considerably bigger than the 10s.

However, you can still fit only the same number of icons on the bottom, which is four. If you're using widgets on your phone, which is a new aspect of iOS 14, you can only fit the same number of widgets and icons on the screen, as you could on the smaller device, which I feel like is just really underutilized. I don't know why you can't fit an extra set of widgets, or you know, maybe just larger widgets on the bigger device. That's really my only gripe. The last thing I don't like about this phone, which is really not that big of a deal, and it's nothing.

We can change now, but it's the elimination of 3d touch. I use 3d touch a lot. It was like one of my favorite features on the iPhones so not to have. It is a little of a bummer they finally phased it out with their iOS update. Also, so it didn't really make sense to stick with this phone just because that had a feature that you can't use anymore, but I really do miss 3d touch my favorite app that used 3d touch was phone, the phone app.

He used to be able to 3d touch or actually even long press on the phone app, and then it would just show up with your favorite. I think your top four favorite phone contacts, and then you could just easily call them, and now you have to go into the app and then click on the contact, which is just one extra step, but it's kind of an inconvenience sometimes so. The last thing I want to talk about are non-issues for me, so things that are new with the iPhone 12 series. That really is just doesn't really matter to me. Um one is lack of charging brick in with the new iPhone.

So, as you guys know if you buy a new iPhone today, all you get is the USB to lightning cable cord, and that's it. You don't actually get a brick which is not great. If this is your first time buying a phone or an iPhone specifically, but if you have had lots of iPhones in the past, you probably have lots of chargers in your house. So for me, it's a non-issue because we have tons of chargers everywhere. We have the OEM lightning cables.

We have anchor lightning cables. Furthermore, we have wireless chargers, we have it all throughout the house, so any room that you go into. You can charge your phone. Another non-issue is really the size of the phone. I already mentioned it, but I really thought that upgrading to the max would really limit my ability to use my phone one-handed or make me more susceptible to drops, which technically hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure I will, I'm bound to drop the phone, but I did drop this phone on occasion also, and it's a smaller size, but this fits comfortably in my pocket well, relatively comfortably into my pocket.

Um. Usually I put my phone in my back pocket anyway, because the front pockets on women's jeans is not generous whatsoever. So it's not like you can fit a lot of stuff in there. Anyway- and let's be honest, I'm in sweat man's most of the time right now, I'm actually wearing jeans, but typically I'm in sweatpants, most of the time and sweatpants have very generous pockets. So I've had no issues fitting this into a pocket on any bottoms that I own.

I also want to just quickly mention that I do, like I said, have a case for my phone. This is just a clear case from ESR gear. I got it from Amazon. It also came with a screen protector which I like. I like the screen protectors actually cover the whole screen and don't have this weird cutout here.

So that's good. This is just a temporary case really because I haven't found any cases that I really like so far, mainly because the device is so new. So not a lot of case manufacturers have come up with cases. I really want a MagSafe compatible case with a MagSafe compatible car mount, but I haven't seen anything available and even throughout the years when you own your phone, you kind of just tend to buy cases that go for different outfits and different occasions. So I'm sure my case wardrobe will expand, but for now I am using a clear one which actually shows off the blue really nicely.

So that is it. I hope you guys enjoyed watching this video, it's kind of like an overview, slash review of the 12 pro max great upgrade for me, like I said, if you're coming from a 10s or older it'll, probably be a great upgrade for you. Also, if you are coming from the 11 pro 11 pro max, probably not that great of an upgrade anyway before you go you'll have to. Let me know what phone you're, using in the comments below android iPhone. What kind of iPhone and have you or are you thinking about picking up the new iPhone 12 Pro or the 12 series? The 12 mini, is also really appealing to me just because of how cute it looks.

But I know this is the phone that I will get the most use out of, and I guess kind of future proofs me a little better than something like the 12 mini anyway. Thank you so much for watching, and I will see you in my next video bye.
