Spotify on Apple Watch Series 6 | What you can and cant do

In, a previous video, I did an Apple Watch Series 6 comparison between the GPS and cellular model. In that video I mentioned you're only able to stream with Apple Music and just as I released that video Spotify went ahead and released their app for you to have the functionality of their streaming service on your Apple Watch. So in the comments of that video, there was people asking around what you could do, how to set it up and how to configure it. So I thought I'd create a video for you and run through how to get it set up and configured, and also we'll take a look at what functionality you can do and what you can't do on the GPS and or cellular model be sure to like this video. If you found it useful, or you've enjoyed it. Please do subscribe to my channel for more videos every week, let's jump straight into it.

I have my iPhone 12 in front of me ready to download Spotify, so I'm just going to go ahead and do that just going to let that download. In the meantime, I have my Apple Watch with me. Just to set the scene, I am connected to my Wi-Fi at home: let's go ahead and open the app, so I'm not going to demo too much um in terms of the app itself, because I think people that are wanting to use this will already know how the app works. I myself don't use Spotify at all, but I've made a couple of playlists one two and three, and I've added a few tracks into each of them. Just to show you before I quickly go on to the watch, I haven't done anything to install the app itself.

So if I go here if you can see, it's still loading it's its trying to install the app itself, so it's automatically doing that which is good, so we'll give that a minute and let that finish. Okay, so that's gone ahead and installed now, so we can go ahead and launch that you can see as soon as you go in it will show you anything you've recently played and your library. So if we want to go into your library and then down here, you can see albums artists playlists. So we want to go into playlists, and then it lists your playlists one, two and three. So if I go into playlist one, you can see that up here.

This is now playing. I've turned the volume all the way down, because I don't want to get hit with any copyrights on this video. So that's now playing. The next thing I want to try is connecting my AirPods, so I have my AirPods next to me, I'm going to take them out, I'm just going to pop these into my ear. Okay, you can see my AirPods are connected up here, but what I'm actually going to do? I'm actually going to go down here, um and okay they're connected here as well.

So now my main audio is coming through my headphones uh. My earphones are in my AirPods. So if I go back to Spotify, if I go to my playlist and if I click play, I can actually hear them in my AirPods and if we go here, interestingly, it doesn't say it's playing on its airport. It doesn't say it's playing on AirPods. It shows that it's playing through the iPhone.

Furthermore, it's going to pause that because that's slightly uh distracting while you're trying to talk where you can see here. My phone is connected to my AirPods and um. It seems to be playing through here. Okay, great so next scenario, we decide we want to go for run, so I still have my AirPods connected. So I'm actually going to stick this into airplane mode, to give the illusion that we are in the GPS functionality, and we don't have connectivity to.

We don't have any connectivity to any Wi-Fi, and you can see the phone's now popped up in the corner, so, whereas on your on the functionality on the app um you're able to use the cache functionality to be able to listen to music while you're offline, the app on the watch is somewhat different. So if I try to do this, it shows that it's still playing, but it actually cannot connect to it. And if I go back to my phone, I'm on airplane mode, so you can see here it's not actually playing, but on my watch it shows it's playing, but there's nothing coming through my AirPods and there's nothing coming through my phone just to show you my AirPods are still connected. You can see that if I go back to the app it doesn't give you actually any functionality to select your AirPods directly. Now, once you activate the cellular functionality, it does give you the option here to select your watch as a play device and then from your watch.

It allows you to select your AirPods, so I don't have the GPS functionality, so I'm not able to do it. So that being said, you'd think let me connect to the Wi-Fi, and you would think okay we're connected over Wi-Fi, let's flick our phone back in to connect to Wi-Fi as well. So, let's see if this works just over Wi-Fi. So let's see what happens here um if we hit play yeah, so we can. We can see that works over Wi-Fi, um, and I'm most probably guessing Bluetooth as well.

We still have connectivity to the phone even over Bluetooth. So now, if I go back to the Spotify app and if we try and hit play that still works, so if you were, if you were to go for a run, you would have to carry your phone with you. It's not something that would work just on its own, which is where the functionality of the cellular version comes in what happens if we are disconnected from here? We are in airplane mode. Let's just turn that back onto airplane mode. Okay, there we go.

So that's now disconnected so what actually happens when you go into Spotify, so it basically. If we go back and try and load a playlist, it doesn't load anything it just doesn't connect to your phone, so it can't do anything. So in a nutshell, you need your phone to for this to work. So you can tell by just looking at the Spotify product is very much in its infancy. There are definitely going to be more iterations to come with more functionality.

At this moment it is very limited with what you can do if you want to be able to listen to it on the go while streaming, you need to make sure you have the cellular model on a side note if you go underground or lose service somewhere, you're not going to be able to continue using it through your Apple Watch. So do keep this one in mind. So if you are looking to buy the Apple Watch now Spotify is available. I hope you have seen this video to see the limited functionality currently or unless you have the cellular model. In that case, then there's probably no issues at all.
