Well guys, another day, another still worth the video I still have a little of a cold. So I just apologize for me. You know if I sound a little weird or something like that. Obviously, if I sneeze there's something I did that out, but we're going to be talking about a phone that honestly I haven't really heard anybody talk about this specific series of Galaxy S devices you guys know Samsung makes you know their S series and Note series and then fifty billion other, like budget series phones. Well, they also had an active series align- and this happened I think ever since the galaxy s4 they've had a s4 active as five active I, think the s6, s7 and I think the last one was the Galaxy S8 active device and I think I've owned every single one of those active devices I just keep forgetting to film videos of them before I couldn't resell them, and this was like years ago, so I have to go and buy them again in order to actually go review them and me. Think I reviewed the s6 active a couple of years ago, but we're going to be taking a look at the Galaxy S8 active, seeing how it holds up in 2020 saying if it's still worth it.
Maybe you should pick up this one over the standard, Galaxy S8 now looking at the front, you can see that it definitely looks a little different from these standard, Galaxy, s8 or even s8, plus it definitely has some thickness going on with it, but that thickness is there for a reason. You have a 5.8 inch, Super AMOLED display it is 1440p. It's like pretty much the exact same panel as the Galaxy S8, which is a perfect thing. The Galaxy S8 has a very good panel on it and this is no different. It still has that you know OLED display the 1440p super bright colors, it's just a super nice panel.
Any way you look at it, it's one of my favorite panels ever I think ever even since, like the Galaxy S6, those panels have been killer, and I'm. So glad Samsung, you know still put an OLED panel on this device. I think, with some past active devices, they actually switched to an IPS panel, which is really weird, but this panel does have an OLED display, which is really nice and on the bottom. I was also like I was expecting a micro USB port, but they actually put a USB type-c port on this thing, which is super cool, I love. Seeing that you have a headphone jack on this phone as well on the back, you can see that it looks quite a bit different from your standard.
Galaxy S, a like I've, stated single camera setup in the fingerprint sensor. Those are in the exact same locations as the s8, but the overall total body. Look of this thing is totally different. You can definitely see that. Yes, there's some weird things going on with it.
It's a bit thicker than the Galaxy S8, and you know that thickness does come with some comfortability and some durability with it. You have ip68 dust, Awash resistance. You can go up to one and a half meters of water for 30 minutes its mi l, STD, 8, 100 G, compliant, which, basically, what that means is this thing can take it beating for the most part. It's you know. If you drop this thing here and there most probably I'll be able to take it.
It's not drop proof. So if you drop it like, it's probably still going to crack, but you have enough durability on this thing day. If you don't want to rock it with the case, and you won't have to, but I would still probably recommend you to use it with a case, but when you're feeling it in the hand, it definitely doesn't feel as premium as a Fate. There's no glass on the back, so that's definitely one huge disadvantage of it. It doesn't feel as premium as the galaxy s 8, but I think the people Sampson was trying to relay this phone to wasn't necessarily the people who wanted the most premium device at the time they wanted something durable and if you're getting a Samsung Galaxy s, 8 active you're, definitely going to feel like you have a durable device that if you drop it, it's probably not gonna break versus something.
Like a galaxy, I say that at the time had the glass back, and you know if you dropped it one time. I'd probably be done for her, so that's probably what their main demographic was. So it's funny, though, because this thing came on many months after the galaxy has said's released, the SI came out in 2017 and about them February March timeframe, and this thing was released in August of that year. So it came out several months after that which is kind of funny, so that pretty much covers that up in terms the outside of this device now hitting on this software. This thing was released with Android 7.0 nougat and was able to be upgraded to Android, 9.0 Pi. So on there one UI, which is 1 UI 1.0 and for the most part it's definitely you know a decent software for it to be ending on, but like I've stated before, Simpson really didn't do a service, and they should have at least pushed the galaxy s 8 series another version of software. It was kind of dumb that they didn't do that.
I feel like Samsung, really missed out on the ballpark here. I mean, if you think about it. The Galaxy has said s9. Those are self like close-in devices, they're so close in performance. The way they look in terms of hardware and everything that it really made.
No sense, you know if the s9 could get Android 10 on one UI, ? I couldn't the galaxy I say you know what I mean, so I'm, not gonna, say it's planned obsolescence or anything, because Samsung has been doing that for a while, but it still kind of makes me wonder like just because they'd enter for a while, you know doesn't mean they can't switch it out with the Galaxy has stayed active. It could definitely support Android 10 he's just kind of done that they didn't do that. You know what I mean there are some routes out for this thing and there's some custom ROMs out for this thing, ?, what I recommend you doing it yeah, probably if you're into it, like you, can hunter person. Do it if you want, but at the end the day like I've stated, you're better off, just kind of you know, keeping it stocked for now. It's still getting some security updates for a minute, but after a couple of months after like a year, I would probably recommend you just go ahead and custom ROM.
It I, don't know how big of development communities there is. For this thing, like I, said this thing came out of 2017 and the Galaxy S8 is a pretty big. You know popular phone, but this phone really wasn't as popular of it because first, I didn't get released at the same time. Second of all, nobody really talks about anymore and third of all, you know when you have something like a Galaxy S8. This one is actually I think a little more expensive than the standard Galaxy S8, which is kind of weird, so in terms of software you're kind of outdated as of now, but it's still going to get security updates for a little for sure.
So I wouldn't really feel like you have like a ancient phone yet so that pretty much covers it up in terms of the software standpoint now hitting on the performance, this thing was released with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, an outscore CPU and Arena 540 GPU, and there was only one model of the Galaxy S8 active, which was the 64 gigabyte model. That model had four gigabytes of RAM, and the best thing about the Galaxy S8 active was that it did have that micro SD card slot, so you can easily go and expand that storage. However, you want to with that expandable storage card slot, which is really cool. Now. What I will tell you in terms of the performance standpoint, is that it really is more or less the same as the Galaxy S8.
It's literally the same exact thing and with the s8 like I've stated, it has pretty good performance. You know it's still a pretty decent performing device. I tribute that a lot to this Snapdragon 805 chipset, as well as the outscore CPU, and the only really downside of this phone, would probably be the RAM. Nowadays. We have phones that have like 8 gigabytes of RAM for like the base model and going into 2020 when these new phones are going to be coming out.
All those phones for the most part are probably going to be having 8 gigabytes of RAM as standard. So you kind of on that you know down in the dirty when your kind of comes to the RAM side, it's not the worst thing in the world. Of course, this phone still completely handles it in terms of like the overall, you know using apps and everything in loading apps the whole entire UI is actually pretty decent. You know if you're sweeping through pages, if you're kind of opening things it seems to be a pretty decent experience overall, which I'm really happy about I was expecting some bogged down mess, but when you spotless out a lot of those issues, so I'm really happy to report that so in terms of the overall minor apps- and you know getting things opened, the Play, Store and searching things on the internet and writing it's down on notes or whatever that's gonna, be perfectly fine, I, don't think going to be noticing any differences or changes, but even when you're going to like light and even heavier intensive games, it's like more or less the same. Like I've stated it gets the job done for the most part, there's really nothing to hate on it.
In terms of performance, you get pretty decent performance. The really only downside like I said, would be the RAM, because this thing isn't even on stock Android, there's always a lot of background processes with Samsung's ROM, so you're kind of a little. You know messed up there a little in terms of the RAM, but the performance wise is actually pretty decent still in the 2020s. So in terms of the performance, it gets a thumbs-up for me really, the only downside would be the RAM but other than that I think it's definitely a decent performing device and 22. I so that pretty much covers it.
They're now hitting it off with the camera. This thing has a single 12, megapixel camera on the back and an 8 megapixel camera on the front. You can shoot 1440p on that front camera which is really cool, and on that back camera you can shoot 4k videos, which is awesome. You know for a forum that came out in 2017 I'm glad they still stuck with that 4k video resolution. Furthermore, you can shoot 1080p it up at 60 frames, and you know I'll.
To be honest, this camera is still very, very good. You have optical image stabilization on that video and I. Think this camera is still very, very great, has great quality. My screen does have a lot of burning on it, so it makes the screw, so it makes the photos look a little weird, but if you were to post them on like Instagram or something other people won't see that sweet and burning, obviously and I, think it's definitely a perfect camera still in terms of quality. However, like I've been saying- and this is the biggest disadvantage with getting a used phone or even an older phone like this- is that you are lacking those camera features.
Those hardware features such as a telephoto lens and ultra light sensor and different lenses like that we've been seeing with the galaxy s 20, those things are probably gonna, be those things are probably going to be bringing like 50,000 camera lenses. This thing, as you guys know, it only has a single camera which is kind of sad, so take it how you will, but the quality is great, but you're missing on those camera features, which is a pretty big deal on how going into 2020, so I think that pretty much covers it up in terms of the camera setup as well. Now ending it off with the battery life, this is probably one of the biggest advantages for the galaxy s, 8 active, and that is actually the battery. Now, it's not removable, which is not really that big of a deal it has a 4000 million power battery, which is so awesome I'm, so glad this thing you know that was one of the biggest advantages for the active lines was that most the time it had to make your battery lights, which is so cool, so you were able to go. You know if you kept this thing on the charge, if you took it off whatever you can easily get a full day out of it, I think the standard Galaxy S8 had a 3,000 million power battery, so this thing definitely had a way bigger battery than that which is so cool, and you know if you're using it, if you're going to go through what day with it, you could probably go through at least two days out of it depending on your usage, since this thing doesn't have the biggest screen in the world, and this thing wasn't the most powerful thing.
The only downside is it's not removable and there's no you and this thing is probably degraded in terms of battery over time, but still I think you know it gets the job done for the most part, and it's definitely as 10. My time is perfect. I bought this thing. It was out like 15% and I. Just picked it up like four days ago, and it's on like 4%, which I'm so glad to see that usually my phones would be dead by now.
So this thing has really decent standby time as well and to answer the question: dude is the Samsung Galaxy S8 active still worth it in 2020 I. Think yeah I think it's still worth it in 2020 I think it definitely gets the job done for the most part, there's really not too much to hate on it, though you know, I mean like it's just a galaxy, SAT, more rugged version of that with a bigger battery, so I still think the s8 is worth it. I definitely think the s8 active is worth it. However, like I stated, I think the essays are cheaper for the most part. These things are a little harder to find most of the ones I've been able to find for a cheaper price, have something wrong with them.
Where's on the galaxy is, it's there's just so many available that you can just get them for a cheaper price. So really the choice is yours, like I said, if you need a cheaper version of the Galaxy S8 active, just get a standard, Galaxy S8 you'll be fine.
