Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus vs Note 1: Then and Now, A Review!

Samsung Galaxy Note 1 vs Note 10 Plus - Then and Now! Hey what’s up guys, it’s Fisayo here and this is a bit of an unusual comparison, this is the Samsung Galaxy Note 1 and this is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus…Note 10 Plus and the Note 1… yeah … the first Note we ever had from Samsung and the current Note 10 Plus which was released 3 days ago. In this video, we’re going to take a sort of deep dive and we’e comparing both “flagships” of their times and how they’ve impacted a generation of smartphones. Without further ado, let’s get to the video. The first thing I’ll talk about is the release date. Now both these phones are slash were flagships of their times, depending on when you watch this video and for starters, the Samsung Galaxy Note 1 or the original Note a 5.3 inch display device was launched in October of 2011 this was a time when the size of phones started to become something of importance. This was the time when the word Phablet came into play then, yes the Samsung Galaxy Note 1, this device publicized the word phablet and the iPhone at that time was the iPhone 4S which was launched in October of 2011 as well, it was a 3.5 inch lower resolution screen and people really pitted these devices against each other. That’s the iPhone 4s and the Note 1.

As a refresher, if you’re Nigerian, that was the year we had the General Election that got Goodluck Jonathan elected as President. Wow, we’ve come a long way. Fast forward nearly 8 years later, we now have the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ a 6.8 inch device that was launched on the 7th of August in 2019, this year or 3 days ago. The Note 1 has since been discontinued so it’s not really being supported by a lot of modern apps but we’ll get to that later in the video. As far as the display goes, we’ve got a super AMOLED display with resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels on the Note 1 with a PPI of 285, it had a 66.8% screen to body ratio… then we’ve got the Note 10 plus Samsung calls it Dynamic AMOLED display which has a resolution of 1440 x 3040 pixels and a PPI of 498 nearly double that of the Note 1 and of course that crazy 91% screen to body ratio. Probably the highest screen to body ration I’ve ever seen on a phone if I’m not mistaken.

Oh and the Note 10 Plus is also an HDR 10+ Display, I just felt like I should say that. Looking at the front of both phones, we see so much difference, the Note 10+ is pretty much all screen or all display, 91% of what you see is screen and of course the cutout for the camera and on-screen buttons. On the Note 1 we’ve got so much bezel, a menu button, home button, a back button, Samsung Branding, Earpiece. Samsung even had a Voice Talk feature like what we have as Bixby now. Video quality on the Note 1 looked really impressive actually even now as I look at it.

Yes of course you have the bezels but considering this 2011 super amoled display, in my opinion the quality is not bad now… again except for the bezels and of course you’ve got the Note 10 Plus with a huge resolution. Both Phones have picture in picture option when you’re watching video so basically you can just do something else on your phone while you’re watching a video. On the Note 1 there is significant lag in this mode and you can tell the difference when compared to the Note 10 Plus. Build Quality is something that Samsung has always taken pride in and it is evident in the original Note. On the back of the Note 1, we’ve got a plastic dotted styled back with a pattern to help with grip ability.

The front of both of them is Gorilla Glass, Gorilla Glass 6 on the Note 10+ and just Gorilla Glass on the Note 1. The sides of the Note 1 are simply coated though while the 10+ is all aluminum on the sides and as far as the ports and I/O goes on the Top of the Note 1 we’ve got a headphone jack, something that is missing on the new Note 10+ and…. RIP headphone jack. While on the Top of the Note 10+ we’ve got the Hybrid SIM slot but there’s no expandable storage on the regular Note 10. We’ve also got a secondary Speaker at the top, and a microphone.. mind you the Note 10 and 10 plus have 3 microphones.

One the right side of the Note 1 we’ve got a power button but nothing on the Note 10+. The 10+ kind of removed the power button in place of a side button which is why we have just 2 buttons on the left side. The Note 1 only has the volume rockers there while the Note 10 + has the volume rockers and the remappable side key where by a double press can open the camera app or any app of your choosing and pressing gets you into either Bixby or Powers off your device. On the bottom, we’ve got a regular USB port with the S Pen to the side while on the 10+, we’ve got the microphone, USB C port, speakers and the new Spen. The Note 10+ is IP 68 dust and waterproof device, its water proof up to 1.5m for 30 mins but there’s nothing of the sort on the Note, don’t try it… there will be problems if you try. In terms of weight, the Note 1 and the Note 10+ aren’t too far off as far as their weight distribution just 27 grams of difference and you can’t really tell, Note 1 gives the illusion of a much heavier device because of how wide it is.

Note 10 and 10 plus have a wide selection of up to 6 color options, Aura Glow, which is the reflective trendy version, Aura white, Aura Black which I have, then there’s pink, red and blue, the blue color is reserved for the Note 10+ while the Note 1 has 3 colors, Black which I have here, White and Pink On the Note 1, we’ve got Samsung’s Exynos 4210, Dual Core 45nm chipset while the Note 10+ is an Exynos 9825 chipset for UK or Snapdragon 855 for US, both 7nm Octacore Chipsets. As you probably already know the smaller the nanometer, the faster it is so you can say that 8 years later, the Note 10+ is 6.4 times faster than the Note 1 in terms of the processing power based on the nanometer number alone.. Is that a big deal to you? Let me know in the comments. Also the RAM situation is not even friendly at all 1GB of RAM and 12GB of RAM, HA! And as far as storage, you get a minimum of 256GB on the Note 10+ while you’ve got the 16 or 32GB of storage on the Note 1, mine is 16GB device and it’s almost filled up. You can expand the Note 10+ by 1TB while the Note 1 only by 64GB.

Okay so we’ll do a quick comparison for apps opening faster. As you can see the cache is cleared and I have no recently used apps. First app we’ll open is the Dialer App. Then the Camera App and we’ll change the mode to video, Playstore then we’ll search Instagram, Clock, Settings… and then we open the about section. The Google Chrome, let’s search something.

Okay so now I’m going to go back into multitasking and opening back the first app, yes it will take some time to load on the Note 1 because it’s just 1GB of RAM however I’m seeing that the Note 1 actually reloads apps to the same position that it was before despite being slow and I think this is a good thing. Gaming on the Note 1 was actually pretty impressive, I started with a 2D game, Vector, and it ran really smooth with no lag then I tried smash hit which is a 3D game, and it did well, so well actually but in the medium graphics… when I switched it to high graphics the lags came in. I also played Riptide GP a pure 3D game and it was also quite well although the water didn’t render too nicely. On the Playstore you can’t download games like Temple Run and even PUBG for understandable reasons. On the Note 10 all the games I played were super smooth I didn’t experience any lag in similar games but only tiny lags in PUBG.

Anyway about the battery performance. The Note 1 did last me about 4-5 hours of heavy use on a 2,500 mah battery while the Note 10 plus doubles that for almost 11 hours for me so far at 4,300 mAh. Android Version: As far as Android version of this device, it came installed or shipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, oh gingerbread and updates publicly stopped at Android 4.1.2 Jelly bean but I have android 4.0.4 Ice cream sandwich and for some reason I couldn’t upgrade my software. About the user interface, Nothing major but I also noticed Instagram has the old logo. It’s mostly Skeumorphic on here as far as design whereas on the Note 10+, its flat and modern.

The play store still works here though and there are a few apps you can install on it and of course, you can’t install modern apps. Even the Samsung App Store for the S Pen works pretty well. WhatsApp works as well. The Bluetooth version on the Note 1 is Bluetooth 3.0, I feel like people don’t even hear about that anymore while the Note 10+ of Course has Bluetooth 5.0. There is a single backward firing speaker on the Note 1 which sounds just fine, while the Note 10+ has 3 speakers and is tuned by AKG to sound more crisp and there’s also Dolby ATMOS.

As far as sound quality here’s how they both perform. They did both sound fine, the Note 10+ of course sounded much better and I like how the music was presented well, speaking of Music. If you’ve been watching my videos, you’d know I only use Musicbed for all the videos on my channel recently and that’s because of how amazing their service and the songs on there are, Musicbed is a really dope place to get music for your next YouTube video, projects, films you name it, they’ve got you covered and not only do I use them, companies like Nike, Samsung, Google, Facebook and a host of others use their service and about pricing it starts at $9.99 cents. Alright, now we’ll get to the Cameras on these Notes. The Note 1 has a single 8MP camera on the back. It’s F2.6 and a 28mm wide angle camera with autofocus and flash, that is all.. It records 1080p at 24 and 30 fps and on the front, we only get a 2MP camera.

On the back of the Note 10+ its a triple camera setup 12MP main shooter with dual aperture, 12MP telephoto, 16MP wide angle camera and a time of flight sensor, for 3D mapping and flash. It shoots 4K in 30 and 60FPS, Can shoot HDR 10+ content, Dual Video Recording, Stereo Sound with those dual microphones and it has Optical Image Stabilization and Electronic Image Stabilization and on the front it’s a 10MP wide camera with Dual Pixel Autofocus, it can do Dual Video Calls can also shoot 4k in 30 fps Pictures on both cameras are obviously worlds apart but that’s of course expected. First off the selfies were pretty much the kicker. There are lots of obvious differences between a 2MP selfie and a 10MP selfie which has been fine tuned for up to 8 years now, still it’s not all bad and can be used in some settings. The back camera on these cameras have their separations in the details of each shot.

The natural blur on the Note 10+ really outshines the lack of depth on the Note 1 and in terms of colors, you can see that the images just speak for themselves. The Note 1 is barely manageable when you see them standing side by side. Blur Quality was okay and saturation was a little bit overdone on the Note 1. Also autofocus was not even manageable on the Note 1, I kept getting blurry photos from moving subjects and. The Note 10+ just kept amazing me.

In terms of video, as I said the 10+ records 4k compared to 1080 on the Note 1 and there’s no stabilization on the Note 1 but the Note 10+ is pretty much steady through out. I think the first S Pen was way ahead of its time because when you consider one of the main features highlighted on stage for the Note 10+, you’ll see what I mean. So basically, the New S Pen on the Note 10+ like I mentioned in my 24 hour review has a mode where you can write and just tap a button and it converts it to text for you, well welcome to 2011 because on here back then and as you can see when you write with the first S Pen, you get to see how it transforms to text in real time. I’m not sure how exactly it was received then but still, very interesting. If I can remember correctly too, the Note series was teased towards more business minded people due to the way it functions and how the calendar is laid out as well as the Pen.

The new S Pen is super super improved with a gyroscope, it works like a magic wand where you can control things without coming close to the device. But the Old S pen was pretty much a novelty and now it looks like that was all it was. To take a screenshot on the Old Note 1, you simply take the pen out, press and hold the side button and put it on the screen and that’s it.2 other gesture controls are for the menu when you swipe up and going back one page when you swipe left. On the new S Pen you get to do a whole lot and even customize your own menus. Do check out my review on the Note 10+ in the description.

This Note 1 in 2019 costs 30,000 Naira right now. It used to cost upwards of 95,000 Naira back then or about $300 which.. that’s interesting and as at 2012, in just a year, the Note 1 sold 10 million copies. The Note 10+ however costs alot.. over 380,000 Naira or $1099.

Can this Note 1 be used in 2019 of course, but not really, maybe If you want to use it to make a few phone calls and you still have that huge sim which almost no provide sells anymore then fine I guess, a lot of apps aren’t supported but as a smartphone and not a communications device, it really is impressive. The Note 10+ however is racing to be the best thing people would put in their pockets come the 23rd of August 2019 and it’s just amazing how tech has improved so far.
