Samsung Galaxy A71 vs Samsung Galaxy S9 (Used) - Who Will Win?

Should you go with a new mid-range device, or should you go with an older flagship device? Well in this video we're going to find out as I compare the Samsung Galaxy a 71 to the Samsung Galaxy s, 9 hi everyone. This is Kevin here coming at you, three n--, the Samsung Galaxy, a 71 in the Samsung Galaxy s 9. So many people have requested this video and for a good reason, the Galaxy, a 71, has been a very popular mid-range phone. That's been out by Samsung for several months now and, of course, the Samsung Galaxy S 9 is a very legendary flagship device that was launched in early 2018. Now you can currently get the Galaxy a 71 for a little under $400, whereas you can get the galaxy s 9 for a little under $300. So essentially, by going with the s9 over the 71, you can save roughly $100.

So is it worth the trade-off, and what are the benefits with going with the 71 compared to the s9 I'm gonna? Be addressing all of that in this video now first thing I want to mention. Is that both of these devices are GSM unlocked? So if you use a GSM carrier like AT&T or T-Mobile, or maybe you live outside the US? Well, whatever carrier you use as long as it's a GSM carrier, it will work with either of these two phones. This is the international variant of the 71, and this is the GSM unlocked variant of the s9. Now, like I mentioned before, prices change all the time, so take a look at the links in the video description to see the most up-to-date pricing for both of these devices. But one thing that I do know for sure is that both of these devices are significantly cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy s 20, and especially the s 20 ultra, which is $1400, so you're saving a ton of money by going with either of these two devices compared to some of Samsung's latest flagship phones.

So at least you know whether you go this route or you go this route. You'll know, at the end of the day that you're not spending a ton of money on your device compared to you what you could have done now with the Samsung Galaxy a 71 we're getting a six point. Seven inch display we're getting a Super AMOLED display here at 1080p, with the PPI of 393 and a 20 by 9 aspect ratio. Then up top here we are getting the Infinity Oh for the front-facing camera. So, instead of a notch, we are getting a hole punch for that camera and with the Samsung Galaxy S 9 we're getting a 5.8 inch display it's Super AMOLED. It is a 1440p display with a 570 PPI and an 18 and a half by nine aspect ratios.

So you are getting a taller and more narrow form factor with the 71. But of course the display itself is significantly larger. So you can see side-by-side here. There's no doubt the 71 is the bigger phone of the two. So if you are really into watching video content, you're going to have to decide whether you'd rather have the larger display at the lower resolution or the smaller display.

At the higher resolution, of course, 1440p on here is super crisp and super clear, but I've got to say the 1080p panel on the 71 looks perfect too, so both of these devices do have very incredible displays, and it's pretty amazing that Samsung is even able to include a Super AMOLED display with the 71, considering that this device is just under $400 now up top here with the 71 we're getting a 32 megapixel front-facing camera and with the galaxy s 9 we're getting an 8, megapixel, front-facing camera. Now, of course, at the s 9, there is no notch. There's also no hole punch for the front-facing camera, but we do have thicker bezels on the top and bottom of the device. So that really is the trade-off here. But at least you'll know that if you do on a watch full screen, video on this phone, you're going to have nothing getting in the way.

Unlike the 71 where you will always have that front facing camera kind of peeking in at all times now at the Sam Galaxy, a 71 we're getting 128 gigabytes of internal storage, with SD card expansion and with this variant of the galaxy s, 9 we're getting 64 gigabytes of internal storage, and we're also getting an SD card expansion. So you are getting double the amount of internal storage with the galaxy, a 71 which is really cool, and I've got to say there really is nothing better than having a lot of actual storage internally in the device itself compared to you having to install a micro SD card. Now with the galaxy a 71 there's no NFC, there is no wireless charging, there's also no water resistance, where, as we do get all of those things with the Galaxy S 9, so with the Galaxy, a 71 we have face and lock. We also have an in display fingerprint sensor. So that does work really well, whereas with the Galaxy S 9, we have a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the device so kind of little more old-school.

But it does work very well, it's a very quick and responsive fingerprint sensor and the s9 also has faced unlock, and it also has an iris scanner as well. There is no iris scanner with the 71, but on the other hand we do get that really cool in-display fingerprint sensor. That I know is kind of the trendy thing nowadays that many people are into now flipping over to the backsides of both phones with the galaxy a 71. We have a quad camera setup, so we have a 64 megapixel main camera, a 12 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera, a 5 megapixel depth, sensing camera and a 5 megapixel macro camera for close-up photos, whereas with the galaxy s 9, we just have one camera here, and it is a 12 megapixel camera. So zooming in on things with a 12 megapixel camera really will not work nearly as well as sum'n in on things with the 64 megapixel camera on the 71, since it does have more pixels, so you're able to crop in and then, of course, the s9 also lacks the ultra wide-angle camera, and I'm.

Not a big fan of the macro camera on the 71 I just feel like it doesn't really offer too many benefits that are practical. So really, at the end of the day, you are getting a lot of extra camera features with the 71, and it does take excellent looking photos. But if you're, just looking for kind of standard camera features, you don't care about ultra-wide, you don't care about macro, and you don't care about zooming in on things, then I would say the s9 overall will take better photos than the 71. The good news, though, with both phones, is that they both do have portrait mode for the front and rear cameras. So despite the s9 only having one camera on the back, the camera itself is compatible with portrait mode.

So that is really cool so, with the galaxy, a 71 we're getting six gigabytes of RAM in with the galaxy s, 9 we're getting four gigabytes of RAM in with the galaxy a 71 we're getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor, whereas with the galaxy s 9 we're getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, so we're getting a flagship processor, that's a little older with the S 9, and we're getting a relatively recent mid-range processor from Qualcomm with the 71 now I did run in an tutu benchmark test with both devices and surprisingly, the 71 has a lower score than the s9, despite the s9 being less expensive and older. So with the Samsung Galaxy, a 71, I got an overall score of 264 741, and I got quite a bit higher of a score with the galaxy s 9 at 3, 4 0, 9 6 0. Now in a little, I will be doing an actual speed test comparison between these two phones. So that would really be the chance to put these two up to the test, but in general I think it's nice that we do get extra RAM with the 71 I think. Definitely, since we're getting a weaker processor with the phone having the extra RAM will come in handy, but at the end of the day you should expect to get better performance from the galaxy s 9.

Now, as far as video recording goes, both devices support 4k, video recording, which is really cool, but with the Galaxy S 9, we get 4k, video, recording and 60 frames per second, that's something that you don't get with the 71. Unfortunately, now at the Samsung Galaxy a 71 we're getting a very beefy battery at 4500 million powers compared to the galaxy s 9, which features a smaller internal battery at 3,000 million powers also keep in mind that with the S 9, if you decide to buy it renewed, you are going to have a battery. That's likely previously been used. So if that is the case, then I think without a doubt, you're going to get better battery life with the 71. But if battery life isn't a big deal to you, maybe you work from home.

Maybe you don't mind carrying a power bank, then having a smaller battery with the s9, isn't something that you necessarily should worry about now, let's get into software. What's really cool is that both these devices currently do run Android 10 with Samsung's 1ey 2.0. Now the galaxy a 71 did run Android 10 out of the box originally and with the s9. This device did originally come with and rat 8, Oreo and since has been updated to the latest version of Android. So that's really cool.

In fact, the software in both phones is very similar overall. So if you are used to one UI, it's going to be pretty much the same experience on both phones. You know they both do feature the app edge on the side. So that's really awesome. Now one difference in our dimension.

This is that with the s9 you get DEX and there is no DEX with the a71 I'm, pretty sure the a71 would be capable of it, but Samsung decided to not give the a-series that feature. Probably, to give you an extra reason to want to go for their flagship, S series, phones and their note phones, but now that we've compared the specifications of these two devices. Let's compare the hardware I already talked a lot about the front panels here, so I'm not going to talk about that too much more, but, of course, you're getting a much more modern. In my opinion, better-looking design at the 71 you're certainly getting a better screen to body ratio as well with very small bezels all around, whereas with the s9 you're getting thick bezels on the top and thick bezels on the bottom. Now, taking a look on the left side of the two devices on the galaxy, a 71, we just have the slot for the micro SD card in SIM card and nothing else.

We also have a plastic band around the side of the device, whereas with the s9, with a metal band and glass on the back. Also, by the way, this is glass dick kind of a glassy plastic material, but it certainly is plastic and not glass. On the a71 down the left side of the s9, we have the volume button, and we also have the big speed buttons. There is a dedicated big speed button with the s9 I. Don't really care about that because I'm, not a fan of big speed, then take a look on the left side of the two devices on the 71 with the power button, and we have the volume button, then, on the right side, the s9.

We just have the power button, then, on the top of the two devices they both have the noise-cancelling microphone and then with the s9. We have the slot for the micros card and SIM card. Then taking a look at the bottom of the two phones on the 71 we have 3.5 millimeter, headphone jack, USB, C port for charging and data transfer. We have the microphone and the speaker, and we have that same exact setup here with the galaxy s.9 then take a look at the backside of the two devices you can see on both phones with the camera module and the flash, and then with the galaxy s 9, and we do have a fingerprint sensor. Let's now do a speed test comparison between these two devices, we're gonna start by pulling up the camera app, so one two three go and the s9 was a lot quicker at pulling up the camera and by the way, just want to let you know that I have all of my other apps cleared out with these two devices.

So that's just something to keep in mind there: let's go to Google Chrome on both phones, so one two three go, and it looks like the s.9 was quicker, pulling up, Google Chrome, let's go to yahoo. com one two three go, and it looks like the s.9 is quicker at pulling up Yahoo as well. Let's go to engadget. com one two three go, and it looks like in this situation. It looks like the s.9 was quicker, pulling up the video quicker, pulling up a lot of content here on the website. Also, another thing to keep in mind too: I have the same exact display settings on both phones, I, have it on vivid a little to the left and full brightness as well, and you can see that the 71 certainly does have a better looking picture than the s.9 colors, look better and clearer in my opinion, but scrolling in both phones is smooth. That's for sure, of course, both phones.

You have to catch up a little as well, but let's go to this link right here: 1 2, 3, actually we'll go to this one about the LG velvet, one two three go and the S 9 is quicker, pulling up the article so very interesting there, but pinch-to-zoom very smooth on both phones. So, overall, with both the think you're going to get very good performance, and you know in real life, I think they're, both decently quick, you're going to have a good time with them, and they're certainly going to get the job done for the majority of people out there. Of course, if you're someone who has an unlimited budget- and you feel like spending $1400, then you do have the s20 ultra as an option for you, but if you're kind of a regular person- and you don't have that much money to spend on a smartphone and I feel like for the majority people out there, even if they have money for a smartphone in that budget, they shouldn't spend it anyway. These two devices are certainly great choices, so, in my opinion, I think. If you're looking for extra camera features, especially an ultra wide-angle camera, which I know, is important to many people now in 2020, then the 71 is the better option for you.

Also, you're getting extra storage you're, getting potentially even more software updates in the future you're getting a bigger display with the phone too, which is helpful in many situations such as watching videos, then I think the 71 is the better option, but if you're looking to save 100 bucks, you also want better performance. Maybe that's a priority to you, and you're totally fine with having just one camera on the back, then I think the s 9 is a better option, so it really comes down to if you think getting the extra features of the 71 is worth the extra hundred bucks and if you don't mind, losing some features, such as wireless charging and losing 1440p, and also not having 4k video at 60fps and that's kind of the trade-off here with these 2 devices. But definitely let me know what you think about these two phones and which one you would choose and if you want to see the most up-to-date pricing for either of the two phones, then take a look at the link in the video description. But this is Kevin here. This is the Samsung Galaxy, a 71 versus the Samsung Galaxy s 9 here in 2020, and I will see you in the next video.
