Samsung Galaxy A02s Unboxing, Hands On & First Impressions!

What's going on guys, my name is wade with tech daily and in this video we are checking out the new Samsung Galaxy a02s. Now this phone seems to be the newest entry-level Samsung a series device for 2021. I suspect there will be a regular a02 at some point, but for whatever reason, Samsung decided to hit us with this s version first, and while this phone is technically the successor to last year's a01. To be honest, it's actually a pretty different device in a lot of ways. There's definitely a lot to talk about here, so I won't waste any more time. Let's just go ahead and unbox this thing and see what the new a02s is all about.

Now, as far as the pricing and availability, this phone right now retails for between 150 and 180, depending on the configuration you choose and where in the world you're located it's going to be available worldwide, including here in the US, it may even hit some prepaid and carrier networks soon and if you guys are interested in doing some comparison, shopping of your own I'll leave some links down below in the video description to all the deals and discounts for this device, so sliding off the sleeve of the box here. The first thing we get is the usual Samsung logo stamped on a small cardboard packet and inside here is just a small selection of paperwork. Unfortunately, no included clear case for this. A series phone next up is the a02s itself. I got mine in black, obviously, but it also should be available in blue white and red, we'll set it to the side for just a second and digging a little deeper in the box.

We do have a few other accessories to mention at the very bottom. Is the sim ejector tool? If you need it, there's also the older style, 3.5 millimeter Samsung earbuds, which are nice to see at least still thrown in there, and you also get an USB a to USB charging cable and the 15 watt USB a Samsung, fast charger wall plug so with all that stuff. Out of the way here is the new Samsung Galaxy a02s, and if you're even vaguely familiar with last year's a01, I think you can probably tell already just how different this new device is in comparison. Unlike the a01, which was a small compact, 5.7 inch device, the smallest phone Samsung released all year. In fact, this new a02s is now a fairly large 6.5 inch smartphone, and it falls right in line with all the rest of the big phones Samsung offers in it's a series lineup. As far as the design, we get a typical teardrop notch across the top and fairly slim bezels all around with a bit of a chin towards the bottom.

Nothing too surprising here. It certainly looks like a budget Samsung device, but for the price, still a relatively modern, looking smartphone, with a solid screen to body ratio around back, the new a02s is made of plastic like you might expect, but we get a new sort of style and design, there's a lined pattern with a subtle texture, running crisscross up and down the entire housing and a couple different shades of black to make up that diamond pattern. All of this is just aesthetics, of course, but I think I do like the new style to me. It looks a little nicer than just the plain old single color in the hand. Even though this budget device rocks those budget materials, it still has some nice weight to it, and it is actually a little thinner than you might expect, as well with a decent curve and contour along the edges to keep things comfortable at this size.

I think it's still possible to use with one hand pretty easily, but, like I mentioned earlier, it is a relatively big phone quite tall more than anything else, and I think it's something you should probably test out. First, if you can just to make sure it works for you taking a look around at everything else. On the left side, you've got your sim and SD card tray for expandable storage on the right there's the usual power and volume buttons down below you'll, find a headphone jack, USB c port for charging and a single downward firing. Speaker- and this to me, while I thought maybe was a similar setup to other single speakers on a series phones, it actually is a bit quieter than I expected here's a quick sample, so you can get an idea around back. The a02s has a triple lens camera setup and flash which I'll talk about in a second, and one thing you actually won't find on this phone at all is a fingerprint sensor.

There's no power button sensor like the a12, no rear fingerprint sensor, and this to me is kind of a bummer, honestly. Now there is still face unlock, which is actually pretty quick. I was kind of surprised by that, at least, but I think the lack of any fingerprint scanner is one of the first notable negatives of this new phone inside. The new a02s is powered by a bit better internals than the a01 from last year, though, like I mentioned already, this is still very much a budget device, so you do have to keep your expectations in check. We do get the Qualcomm snapdragon, 450, processor and arena 506 GPU, either three or four gigs of ram and either 32 or 64 gigabytes of internal storage, depending on the configuration you choose also crammed inside now, is a 5 000 William battery and in a phone like this with these kinds of specs, that means you should easily get more than a day's use on a single charge.

If you're curious here are the geek bench scores for this new device, like I said, certainly a budget phone with lower end internals, but in practice I think, there's a bit more potential here than you might think, even in being Samsung's current high-end device. Now one important thing to mention the unlocked international version of this phone looks to be shipping with one UI core which, as you guys know, means there are a couple of Samsung features. This phone does not have but 95 of the android 10 and one UI features functions and apps are still going to be here and honestly, at least out of the box. This phone feels pretty decent. All things considered, we already have a handful of apps and personal things loaded up on here, as you can see, and I think the biggest change previous low end, a series smartphone owners will notice is much better app management and app load times.

My a02s here has four gigs of ram and while by today's standards, that's not a ton, it's still twice as much as the a01, and I think it's plenty to keep this phone feeling more than usable and have those apps stay pretty current. Now, I'm looking forward to putting this phone to the test a bit further for my full review. But let me just say this: a phone like this is going to be mainly used for phone calls text messages, light social media and web browsing. Maybe some YouTube videos too. It's definitely not a gaming device.

It's not gonna, be a multitasking powerhouse of a phone for work or for play. Furthermore, it's a simple device for people who just need something inexpensive. This is still the lowest end. Samsung device, like I said already at least right now, and with that I think you do need to make sure you know what to expect. Even still, I do think there is some value here since the phone comes in at well under 200 anyway, the larger 6.5 inch display on the a02s is a 1600 by 720 resolution. Pl sips display cramming in 270 pixels per inch at that tall 20 by 9 aspect ratio, and I think the screen on a phone like this is about what you'd expect with a bigger size.

It's obviously not going to be as sharp as it could be. But, to be honest, I don't think it's too bad at all. It's a fine viewing experience even from most off angles. It gets plenty bright. Furthermore, it's certainly colorful enough.

Furthermore, it is still your basic budget smartphone experience, though I will say like I always do that. Snagging, a big display at this price point is kind of nice honestly and for casual content consumption that could be a big plus, but, like most everything else on this phone, you just have to make sure you aren't expecting too much for me. I think it's a little better than expected, even but if you want OLED or 1080p you're, definitely going to have to look elsewhere. Finally, when it comes to the cameras, this phone has a few things to offer here around back. The triple lens setup is made from a 13 megapixel main lens 2, megapixel macro lens and 2 megapixel depth sensor and up front.

It's going to be just a 5 megapixel selfie camera. Now, unfortunately, you're going to be missing out on a lot of features here, obviously, no ultra-wide lens, no night mode, not a lot in general, really with the shooting modes and features 1080p at 30fps, is the highest option for video recording. There's no slo-mo either. Nowadays, this sort of setup is about as basic as you can get, but on the plus side, I actually don't think the initial results here are too bad at all, while the selfie camera seems to be the same hardware from the a01, I think this time around it's producing a better shot and the rear lens setup has some potential too. As you can see here as basic as the phone is with those cameras, I don't think it's going to give you too bad of a shot, but just know that in the world of smartphone cameras now- which I think are what companies are focusing a ton of attention on this sort of setup- is about as basic as you can get in comparison.

All in all, this is most certainly a basic smartphone from top to bottom. It's the lowest a series phone out right now, the cheapest new one for 2021, at least at the moment, and with that you do get a lot of compromises. However, for well under 200 bucks, I don't think it's a bad buy. The bigger screen might entice some people. The bump up in specs is noticeable for sure over the a01 and as simple as it all is, there's nothing wrong with the phone, at least in my opinion, except for maybe that lack of fingerprint sensor in general.

This is absolutely the phone for folks who just need something simple and inexpensive, and if you recognize that you're getting a basic device for that price point, I think you can expect to be happy with what you get here just remember to keep those expectations in check. So there you go. Those are my initial thoughts and first impressions on the new Samsung Galaxy a02s. What do you guys think about this phone? Is this something you're considering right now?
