ROG Phone 5 Review - So Much Good, It's Ridiculous

If you're looking for a smartphone that has all the features that you could ask for, especially if you're talking about performance. This is it. This is the phone that does all that and even more there's so much to this phone. It's kind of ridiculous. This is the ROG phone five and to just give you a little of context, there are actually three different models of this phone. You have the standard, row phone 5, the ROG phone 5 pro and the kg phone 5 ultimate, the one which I have is quite obviously the standard base model, but even within that model itself there are different configurations of which this is the highest of that bunch.

That means you're getting 16 gigabytes of LP ddr5 ram and 256 gigabytes of UFS 3.1 internal storage. Those two components are really the only differences between different skills as the rest of the spec sheet is pretty much the same. All the models will have the same: snapdragon 888, 5g processor, the same 144hz AMOLED display the same cameras so on and so forth, but regardless of which model you're looking at this phone is stacked, but before we get into that, I do want to talk a little about the design, because for this iteration this year, ASUS has kind of gone for the more minimalistic route gone. Are the copper accents and a sort of thermal element design now replaced with a more simple looking matrix and striped design. That's brought from their line of gaming laptops.

Even the ROG logo itself is now integrated with that matrix design and helps make the overall phone feel more consistent, slightly more unified and just arguably look better. The main accent this time around is the cover for the sim card tray, which sports a nice metallic red issues even has the words. Good luck have fun add on to them a kind reminder that, despite the less flashy gamer aesthetic, this is a gaming phone. True and true, I honestly do like the updated design and, despite it being slightly more minimalistic, it still retains that kg personality and aesthetic. But to be frank, I also find it a little meaningless, because how often do you actually look at the back of your phone and even with that RGB illuminated kg logo? Well, when you're using a phone, your hands will be covering it anyways, and I guess it and most of you would slap on a case which would further cover it anyways.

So yep, there's that even so, I do find the design to be attractive. It still stands out amongst other phones in 2021, rather prominently, but design isn't just where things got refined. The performance and overall experience of the phone is where it's at, if you're just talking about display itself, it's already in a link of its own, and it's fast surpassing most of its competition out there 6.78 inches AMOLED, full HD resolution, 144hz, refresh rate 1, millisecond response time, 1200, nits, peak brightness, HDR, 10 and 10 plus certified above 100, DCI p3, color gamut coverage, and you get all of that under chronic gorilla glass pictures. To sum it up in simple terms: it's a phenomenal display, be it just general usage like scrolling through websites or watching YouTube videos from your favorite YouTubers. It's a great experience, but arguably the best use of this display would be what this phone is designed for.

Gaming. Now that we are talking about gaming, we have to touch a little about audio and, yes, the speakers on this phone is awesome. It literally blows everything else out of the water and even compared to the ROG phone 3. It is a step-up. The audio experience is clean, clear and more so than anything.

It can get really loud not to mention that, partly because of how large this phone is, you can really hear the audio separation between left and right channels. The kg phone 3 had the best smartphone speakers last year, and this is the only one that beats that in short, ASUS ROG is literally passing a mental within themselves. But, yes, gaming is definitely the main focus of this phone and just like its predecessors, it's offering a ton of gaming features. A lot of them make a return, but they are now all improved. The air triggers still function the same as before, giving you extra shoulder buttons for games, but are now more sensitive and more customizable.

You get armory CRT, where you can select different power profiles and easily see your phone's statistics at glance. But now you can even customize things like your thermal limit, CPU and GPU performance and so much more there's even an option to invert the colors on your display, which might be great for spotting enemies in games like PUBG mobile, but I do really have to question the implementation of such a function regardless, there's just so much. You can customize it's honestly insane. We now talk about battery and just like before it's a six thousand William per hour unit, but it's been improved. It is now a dual battery design consisting of two 3000 William per hour units and comes with an included 65w hypercharge.

Adapter. That means that it not only charges faster 70 in half an hour, but it also manages to do that while staying cooler as well, helping with the longevity of the battery one other cool feature, is that the side mounted type c port supports pass-through power in most smartphones. If you charge and play the phone tends to heat up more because the battery is getting charged as well for the RJ phone 5. However, if you're playing an intense game, and especially for long hours, the adapter would simply power the phone and not charge the battery at all again, resulting in lower temperatures and helps with battery care. If you want even better performance and lower temperatures, you can opt for the aero active cooler accessory, which now not only includes the fan and kickstand, but two additional buttons as well.

To note, however, if you want the aero active cooler accessory only with the ultimate edition does it come with the box? If you opt for the base or the pro model, this is a separate purchase. Lastly, is the headphone jack, which is honestly a must-have on a gaming phone as much as wireless earphones are great audio latency is still an issue, especially for music and rhythm games. So it's good to see it here. By this point, you might notice that I didn't really talk about the cameras on the row phone five and that's with good reason, simply because there's really so much to this phone that I can't really talk all about it in one video and to be frank, it is a gaming phone. It's focused on gaming cameras is not really the priority here, but here are some shots taken on this phone, using the cameras on all the lenses and to be fair, it isn't bad at all.

By now. You know that this is a great gaming phone, but it is still a smartphone nonetheless. Thus, we definitely have to talk about price. The ROG phone 5 starts at 799 euros, but can get up to 1299 euros for the ultimate edition. If you're just looking at a base model, the price is actually rather competitive, and I would say that the phone is worth every bit of it.

If you're looking at the ultimate edition, however, or even just the pro, that's a little tricky because it certainly is pricey at those prices, you really have to justify your own needs and have to be vested in the whole smartphone gaming ecosystem. Make no mistake: this is an extraordinary phone that really delivers on what it's supposed to be ASUS ROG did a perfect job the design, this performance, the phone itself- I really like it, but it is still a gaming phone and a gaming phone. It is its target. Audience is a really niche market. So long as you know that you're part of that group of people well, the ROG phone five will be a hit for you.

But personally I do like the phone, but you still have to take on a more practical, like you have to think practically, whether is it going to be your daily driver and whether that price would justify the purchase. But in any case I like it, ASUS did a perfect job.
