Pixel 3a vs Pixel 3: What do you lose for $400?

Google's first budget smartphone is a lot like it's more expensive brothers when it comes to features and, more importantly, cameras. But what do you lose to save $400? Here's what's different about the Pixel 3a compared to the standard pixel 3 presented by D Brent, the most obvious difference between the two devices are their build materials, while a Pixel 3a feels like a solid well-constructed device, it forgoes, glass and metal for polycarbonate, which, admittedly, still feels pretty good in the hand. It also results in both of these phones being lighter, especially in the case of the 3 AXL. This downgrade from a premium glass bill to a cost-effective plastic body means it's more prone to scratches than the last one. However, it also means that you shouldn't feel as bad about covering that premium glass back with a skin or a case, D brand offers premium. Vinyl skins for many phones and pre-orders are already open for the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL.

You can customize your own skin with almost any style from unique textures to carbon fiber, and even this concrete design you could also go with deeper ends. Brand-New highly textured swarm design, or you could do a proper purple color, unlike the purplish that the Pixel 3a comes up, the skins are easy to apply, affordable and offer added scratch protection and grip to the device as well hit the link in the description to create a skin for your device, and thanks to D brand for sponsoring our Google I/o 2019 coverage. Taking a closer look under the hood on the Pixel 3a, there are a few more changes to consider. There's the loss of wireless charging on both devices, and no IP rating for water and dust resistance. Google also only offers the Pixel 3a in one storage tier at 64 gigabytes, removing the ability to upgrade to 128 gigabytes like the pixel 3.

There's no micros card slot to make up for this single storage tier either. All 4 pixel devices currently have 4 gigabytes of RAM, but the pixel 3 and pixel 3 exile pairs that with a more powerful Snapdragon 845 chipset, where the Pixel 3a phones both have the Snapdragon 670. So far it is pretty snappy, but it's definitely not as quick as the 845, especially when it comes to opening apps. The speakers also get a downgrade on the Pixel 3a, with Google switching from dual front-facing speakers to one downward-facing driver, that's backed up by the earpiece for stereo separation, while the consensus is that the Pixel 3a generally puts out the same quality photos as its more expensive sibling. There are some cost-cutting measures in the photo Department.

The Pixel 3a still has the same great camera as the pixel three, but it lacks the visual courtship set that makes processing those photos more efficient, there's also no wide-angle selfie camera on the front, most frustratingly, there's no unlimited, full resolution storage through Google photos. Instead, Pixel 3a owners are limited to the same high-quality compressed storage as every other Android phone user. The display on the Pixel 3a also gets a modest downgrade. We're still glad to see OLED displays on these cheap phones, but the pixel three A's panel isn't quite at the same level as the pixel three, with less than stellar viewing angles and bigger bezels they're, also a bit less bright and there's no gorilla glass either. Instead, you're stuck with dragon tail glass, while you do lose a lot or just get worse versions of some things on the pixel 3/8 versus the more expensive counterpart, there's really not much room to complain.

After all, this phone is basically half the cost and still offers nearly the same experience. In fact, there are some things about it that are, oddly better than the standard there's a headphone jack for one thing, something that many users will undoubtedly be happy to see. The plastic build may also end up proving more sturdy than glass in the long run. The biggest win, though, as mentioned, is that they have the same camera as the pixel 3, along with its software tricks all at a much lower price. That alone is a huge reason to consider these devices we'll have a lot more to say about the Google Pixel 3a.
