OnePlus 9 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Savage Siblings! By TechieTechTech

OnePlus phones are insanely popular and for good reason. The recently released OnePlus 9 pro packs cutting edge hardware and software, but also comes with the heaviest price tag that OnePlus has ever put on one of their smartphones. This might make some wonder just how much has the OnePlus 9 pro improved from its predecessor, the OnePlus 8 pro I'm Rohan from technic tech and, let's find out here we go now right off the bat. We have a big area of differences where you talk about the build quality and the design gone is the central camera signature OnePlus design that was found on the OnePlus 8 pro, and it is replaced by a more generic, more Samsung like design with the camera module to the top left in terms of design and looks alone. I think the OnePlus 8 pro is definitely the phone that will stand out more hide the OnePlus logo with the case, and I think a lot of people will mistake. The 9 pro for a Samsung smartphone, but going beyond, looks and talking about the build, both phones, pack, gorilla glass, 5 front and back with an aluminum frame in the middle.

Despite the same materials, the in hand feel is very, very different. The OnePlus 9 pro is ever so slightly smaller and lighter than the OnePlus 8 pro, but it is definitely way easier to hold because of the curve of the glass panels. Allow me to explain see the glass on the OnePlus 8 pro is curved very aggressively, which means it is not easy to get a good grip on that phone. It just feels very slippery and personally, very uncomfortable without a case. The OnePlus 9 pro has gone easy on the glass curve and I truly believe that it has made a significant difference in usability.

It is easier to grip without a case and does not feel like it is waiting to slip out of your hands. Of course, the rough texture on my stellar black OnePlus 9 pro is also more drippy compared to the satin texture on the ultramarine blue 8 pro. In short, the OnePlus 8 pro is the better looking phone, while the OnePlus 9 pro is the better feeling phone moving on. Let's talk about the displays now spec wise, both the displays are almost identical with the same resolution, the same 120 hertz, refresh rate and even the same 6.7 inch diagonal size, but there are two big usability factors in the OnePlus 9 pros. Flavor first, is that the OnePlus 8 pro had a widespread display issue problem where users reported a number of issues from black crush to smearing to even green tint.

I have it on my OnePlus 8 pro and while it does not make the phone unusable, it does leave a bad taste. I tested the OnePlus 9 pro extensively for the same defects using the same tests. Furthermore, I even made a video about it and long story short. It had no such issues, which was a huge relief. The second factor that I was talking about is the curves on the display.

The display on the 8 pro is curved a lot more aggressively, as I said before, and it is a major headache leading to many accidental touches and lots of unwanted glare. It's especially a headache when you're watching a video or a movie on your phone again, the OnePlus 9 pro has reduced the extent to the display curve, thereby mitigating this problem. So even though the display panels look extremely identical on the spec sheet, the OnePlus 9 pro provides a substantially better experience. Keep that in mind, as you pick up a phone for yourself, one area where the OnePlus 9 pro does not provide a substantially better experience is the performance. I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Flagship smartphone CPUs have gotten so good that it's getting really hard to notice any difference even for the most intense kind of users. Yes, the newer snapdragon 88 might have better benchmark numbers than the snapdragon 865 on the 8 pro, but I was not able to observe any usability differences, even in intense scenarios like heavy gaming. On the contrary, I observed that the OnePlus 9 pro got warmer a lot sooner than the OnePlus 8 pro, even for regular, non-intensive stuff. This overheating has been reported by many users and I hope that OnePlus fixes it in a future software update. But until then, as of today, the OnePlus 8 pro and the 9 pro are virtually identical performance wise.

Of course, this might change two to three years down the line as the older OnePlus 8 pro will show its age sooner. But if you're going to change your phone within the next 2-3 years, I think you can go with either the 8 pro or the 9 pro without worrying about the performance differential anyway. Let's also talk a bit about software updates, an area where OnePlus has been performing really poorly in the past few months. To give you a bit of a recap: OnePlus has this track record of good software support until the particular model is the latest, but as soon as a newer flagship comes out, the older model software update, gets delayed by a lot. It happened with the OnePlus 8 pro where it got the android 11 updates in October, while the year older, OnePlus 7 pro got it six months later in March.

Going by this pattern, the OnePlus 8 pro, which is the older flagship, now, will definitely not get software updates at the same time as the newer 9 pro. So keep that in mind, as you make your buying decision. Let's talk about the cameras now in terms of optics, both smartphones sport, a quad camera setup on the rear and a 16 megapixel front camera the OnePlus 9 pro sports, a brand new 48 megapixel Sony, mix 789 sensors as the primary camera, a 50 megapixel ultra white camera and an 8 megapixel telephoto camera with 3.3 times, optical zoom and a 2 megapixel monochrome camera. On the other hand, the OnePlus 8 pro sports, a 48 megapixel Sony, mix 689 sensors as the primary camera, a 48 megapixel ultra-wide camera and 8 megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 5 megapixel color filter camera. This year, OnePlus has created a lot of hype by partnering with a well-known camera brand Hasselblad.

Now Hasselblad has contributed to the color calibration aspect of photography for the OnePlus 9 pro, let's find out how the 2021 OnePlus flagship fares against last year's OnePlus 8 pro, as always, we'll talk about the photos first and then move on to the videos. Now in a vacuum, both devices have perfect primary camera performance. Both smartphones shoot sharp pictures with respectable details. Once we put these devices side by side, the OnePlus 9 pro takes sharper pictures with accurate colors and an overall cooler tone. In short, the pictures shot with the 9 pro are less contrast and have a somewhat flat look as compared to the contrast pictures shot with the OnePlus 8 pro on one hand, the 9 pro also captures more accurate skin tones.

While on the flip side, the OnePlus 8 pro captures pictures with a warmer tone and has better noise processing. We got even better performance on the OnePlus 9 pro with the ultrawide camera. It took detailed pictures with better colors, less fringing and industry leading distortion correction. The OnePlus 9 pro is slightly better in terms of sharpness and colors when it comes to shooting with the telephoto camera. Now macro performance is good on both devices, although the OnePlus 8 pro has the edge as it shoots pictures with more details and better noise reduction.

The subject separation performance is almost identical on both devices. The OnePlus 9 pro does retain the highlights better when shooting outdoors now selfies are where the OnePlus 9 pro has finally got the much-needed improvements. The OnePlus 9 pro captures skin tones with more details and more accurate colors. Both the OnePlus 7 and 8 series have struggled with getting the skin tones right, but always ended up with an overly processed look now low light performance is very similar on both devices. The OnePlus 9 pro shoots brighter pictures with more accurate colors, while the OnePlus 8 pro shoots pictures with better noise processing.

The monochrome and filter cameras on both smartphones do a decent job, although I would still recommend shooting with the primary camera and then just editing in an app or something to get that filter. Look basically, the fourth cameras on both these phones are mostly useless. Now, when you talk about videos in terms of video resolutions and frame rates, the OnePlus 9 pro gets the cake, as it can shoot videos in up to 8k at 30 fps and in 4k at 120 frames per second. On the other hand, the OnePlus 8 pro maxes out at 4k at 60fps, from the rear cameras when it comes to video quality. Both smartphones shoot sharp videos with respectable colors.

In fact, a casual user won't be able to differentiate between the video quality of these two smartphones. So we took a closer look and found that the OnePlus 9 pro shoots slightly sharper videos with less noise and a cooler white balance in different shooting environments. Both devices offer a dedicated night video mode and time-lapse mode for better shooting experience. To sum it all up, both the OnePlus 8 pro and the OnePlus 9 pro have excellent hardware, with the latter sporting, a better camera system, both software wise and color science wise. But this does not mean that the OnePlus 8 pro is bad or anything.

It still takes sharp pictures with excellent noise processing. In fact, if you're already an OnePlus 8 pro user, I would absolutely not recommend upgrading to the 9 series just for the Hasselblad camera. On the flip side, if you're looking for a performance pack flagship phone which takes good pictures, the OnePlus 9 pro is definitely a great option. After all, it is the best camera ever on an OnePlus smartphone talking about the battery life. The OnePlus 8 pro is surprisingly better here, surprisingly for me, because the OnePlus 8 pro that I'm using to make this comparison is my personal phone that I use every day, which means that its battery pack is a bit worn down compared to the fresh battery pack on this brand new OnePlus 9 pro, and yet with the 8 pro, I can manage to get 5 and a half to 6 hours of screen on time, which is much, much better than the 4 to 4 and a half hours of screen on time.

I am getting with the OnePlus 9 pro again. This would be very possibly fixed in a future software update. But before that happens, the OnePlus 8 pro is simply better when it comes to endurance when it comes to charging, though the OnePlus 9 pro takes the cake now, even though both phones charge insanely fast compared to other smartphones, the OnePlus 9 pro is noticeably faster than the OnePlus 8 pro in both wired, and wireless charging. Also, both phones come with a charger in the box, which is always a welcome addition in the post iPhone 12 era. Okay time for some random highlights before we move to the conclusion, the fingerprint sensor is the same on both phones, which means it is reliable and fast.

The stereo speakers sound slightly better on the 9 pro, though the difference is not very significant. A significant difference, however, is when you compare the 8 pro haptics to the 9 pro the OnePlus 8 pro simply has better haptics. Even the calling experience is very similar on both phones with good clarity in the earpiece and great signal holding capacity. Now for the conclusion see the OnePlus 9 pro and the OnePlus 8 pro are very similar phones, so much so that if you're, an OnePlus 8 pro user or even a 7 pro user, it doesn't make sense to upgrade to the OnePlus 9 pro. However, if you're in the market and confused between these two phones get the OnePlus 9 pro, even though the differences are not that major, you get a lot of neat add-ons like faster software updates, better long-term performance and better cameras, tiny things that all combined to make a big usability difference.
