One Second Everyday Tutorial 2020 - TIPS AND IDEAS for Stunning Videos

Hey everyone, it’s Aubrey, and today I’ll be showing you how to use the 1 Second Everyday App to create some stunning video diaries of your life. And even if you already know how to use this app, make sure to stick around until the end where I’ll share some bonus tricks and ideas for upping your 1SE Game and using the Freestyle feature to create some amazing share-worthy projects.1 Second Everyday is exactly what it sounds like. You just record one second or more every single day and this app puts it all together for you. I’m about halfway through my second full year of using this and let me just say, it is so rewarding to see the finished mashed up project at the end of the year or even just the end of the month. There are so many things that happen in day to day life that you almost forget about them, and it gives you a chance to appreciate both the monumental moments as well as the little things that make your life what it is. Thankfully organizing these clips and putting them together is pretty straightforward once you know how to use the tools.

The timeline mode gives you a calendar view of every day that you need to fill in with a video clip. The squares start empty, and you simply tap one to add a snippet. From there you can either use the camera to record directly or select a video clip from your camera roll. If you choose to use the camera you can press and hold to record as long as you want and then it’ll generate 1 second for you. But you can go back and edit it to the exact second or multiple seconds that you want.

I'll show you how that works in just a second. If you want to choose from your library, all of your clips are automatically organized by date, so even if you’re filling in dates from the past, it’ll show you the videos and photos in your phone that are from that day. Since it’s easy to fill in days, I tend to just record my one second using my regular video camera and upload it later. Honestly, sometimes I go a few months without uploading but it’s never a huge issue. I just occasionally have to wait a few minutes for it to download the clip from my iCloud.

From there you’re ready to edit the snippet however you want it. You can always rotate to change the orientation or select fit to frame if the video or live photo was originally recorded vertically. To select the specific second you want, you can scrub through the clip to choose where to start and preview it with the button on the bottom left. It doesn’t have to be one second! I actually prefer to make mine anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 seconds and I always preview the clip to make sure it doesn’t cut off at an awkward time. With the most recent update you can make snippets up to 10 seconds long each.

And don’t forget you can put in a second snippet for each day if you choose. Once your snippets are in, you can start mashing them together with the “Play” button in the center, and you can select the dates you would like to put together by week, month, year, all time, or you can customize your video and select all the snippets you want one by one. You can add music if you want, either from your music library or from the 1SE library of upbeat instrumentals. You can also toggle the branding and date stamps and play the video backwards in the Benjamin Button mode. When you’re happy with it, just save and share to add the video to your social media or save for your own memories.

While the Timeline mode is great for your snippets of life, 1SE also has a Freestyle mode, which is perfect for any other video projects or time lapses you want to do. This is where you can really get creative. You can use this for anything from your outfits of the day to documenting a specific trip or event. You edit clips the same way but you don’t have to put them in order of date. This is also a great way to track changes over time.

For example, I started a project for my puppy so I can see how she’s growing and changing. This would also be great if you have kids and you want to document their life or even if you have a big project and you want to be able to go back and watch the progress from start to finish. And if you really want to make interesting and unique video mashups, here are some tips and ideas to make them that much better. To get better video quality, you can turn your iPhone or Android into a professional camera with certain apps. I like to use Filmic Pro, which does cost $14.99 but gives you a host of cinematic tools. I used some of the focus features to make this little project of things around my apartment.

So as you can see there’s a lot to play with. And if you need inspiration for video projects it’s a great idea to play with movement for each snippet. I found this on Tik Tok and can’t wait to do a project like this when I start traveling again using the Freestyle feature. You could similarly walk from one side of the frame to the other in each snippet or just stand in one place and let the background change around you. You could also play with camera movement to get cool transitions such as panning, rotating, or tilting to get a good flow between clips.

Really, it’s your video diary, so just make it your own and you really can't go wrong! And you’ll be so glad you did when you have tons of great videos of every single day of your life that you can look back on for years to come.
