M1 iPad Pro 2021 vs iPad Pro 2018: Full Comparison (Watch Before You Buy)

What's up guys just a guy in tech here it has almost been three years now since apple released a completely new redesigned, very powerful 2018 iPad. Pro I've been using it for almost two years now, and I simply love it. I've literally been using it every day since I've bought it since the 2018 model apple, updated the iPad Pro once in 2020, with a slightly faster processor and a few more cameras, as this was a minor update and no significant changes compared to the previous generation model. I never upgraded to the 2020 iPad Pro, but then again, just a few weeks ago, in april 2021 apple updated its popular iPad Pro lineup, and this time I decided to get one and see how good it was compared to the 2018 iPad Pro model. So this right here is the brand new 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro model. This model has a few major upgrades compared to the previous generation model, so in this video I'll be comparing my 2018 iPad Pro to this brand new, updated 2021 model to highlight all the major differences between both these models and hopefully, by the end of this video.

It should help you decide if you should upgrade from the 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro model. So with that being said, let's start off with the design and the display in terms of design or physical appearance. Both the iPad pros look exactly the same with just a few minor differences. They both feature h2h displays and a square edge design, which was first introduced with the 2018 iPad Pro the design was so impressive that it was used even on the new iPhone 12 models. The whole body is extremely thin and light, which makes it easy to use.

In fact, the design is so similar that even the bezel ratio across the three generation models is the same. Also, the placement of the power button, the volume buttons the speaker grills, the USB c port and even the magnetic pencil holder place, is the same across all the models. The only real difference in terms of design is when you look at the back of the iPad Pro. The 2018 iPad Pro features a single lens camera setup in a vertical mode, whereas the 2021 iPad Pro features a square shaped camera bump that houses a wide angle lens, an ultra-wide angle, lens a LIDAR scanner and a true tone flash just like the 2018 iPad Pro models. The 2021 iPad Pro is available in two sizes, 11 inches and 12.9 inch, and it is also available in the same two colors silver and space gray. The 2018 iPad Pro models feature liquid retina LED display, which supports 120, hertz pro motion, p3 white color, true tron, automatic color, calibration and anti-reflective coating.

The display is extremely nice and watching videos or movies on this iPad Pro is an enjoyable experience. The display was so good that apple used the same exact display even on the upgraded 2020 models, but in 2021 apple decided to upgrade the display. So now the brand new 2021 iPad Pro features a liquid retina, MTR mini LED display that is powered by 10 000 mini LEDs, which deliver 1000 nits of full screen, brightness 1600 minutes of peak brightness, and it also supports all the other benefits of the previous iPad Pro displays. Thanks to this display, you can now view or edit HDR content directly on your iPad Pro. The HDR mode is really stunning, and it makes viewing videos or photos on this display a pure delight.

It is hands down the best display I've ever used on a tablet or a mobile device. I'm not sure if you're able to tell the difference to the video, but if you do use it once, you will definitely note the difference. Unfortunately, this new display is available only on the new 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro model. The 11-inch model still uses the same display as the 2018 iPad Pro model, similar to the 2018 iPad from models. The 2021 iPad Pro model features a true depth camera system with face ID that uses facial recognition for biometric authentication.

The face ID works extremely well, and I had no issues with it on any of the iPad Pro models. The 2018 iPad Pro features a single 12 megapixel wide lens on the back, which does take decent pictures and if you actually use your iPad to take photos or videos, you'll certainly be happy with it. In comparison, the 2021 iPad Pro features a 10, megapixel, ultrawide camera, a 12, megapixel wide lens and a LIDAR scanner, which is the same setup that can be found on the 2020 upgraded iPad Pro models. The photos are sharp with a lot of details and the color tones are spot on. So, unless you don't mind carrying 11 inches or 12.9-inch iPad Pro around to shoot photos. The 2021 iPad Pro does have a pretty good camera setup, both the 2018 and the 2021 iPad.

Pro models can shoot videos in 4k up to 60 frames per second with cinematic image stabilization. So if you are someone who uses the iPad Pro to shoot videos, you should be happy to know that the video quality is perfect, and you won't be disappointed. The 2018 and the 2020 iPad Pro models feature a 7 megapixel front facing camera, which uses the true depth camera system for facial recognition. In comparison, the 2021 iPad Pro features an updated 12 megapixel front facing camera, which also has an amazing new feature called center stage. So now, during video calls, the new iPad Pro using the front facing camera center stage feature detects where the user is in the field of view and zooms in and shifts the frame around whenever the user moves.

So you basically always keep moving around in the field of view, and your camera will try to keep you in frame and in focus. The 2018 iPad Pro is powered by the a12x processor, which, at that time, according to apple, was faster than 92 percent of portable PC sold in the world. The processor was based on the a12 processor of the iPhone 10s, and it was really fast. It really changed the way how people could use an iPad Pro and since then everyone always had the same question. Can an iPad specifically the iPad Pro replace the laptop.

The iPad Pro was really powerful. It could export 4k videos highly edited images without a lot of stress, and it could handle external storage support and editing apps like Lightroom premiere rush with ease after a few iPadOS updates the 2020 iPad Pro was powered by a12z processor, which is basically a 812x with an extra core, and the performance was about the same, but in 2021 apple decided to go all out, and now the brand new 2021 iPad Pro model runs on the m1 processor, which actually now powers the Apple Mac lineup. The m1 processor is said to be the best processor ever on a Mac lineup and seeing that move to the iPad Pro really got me excited, but as of right now, you won't find any significant changes right off the bat. I won't bore you with benchmark scores, but I can tell you this: if my 2018 iPad Pro could export a 4k file in 14 minutes, this new m1 iPad Pro can do it in 12 minutes. I have no doubts that the m1 processor is packed with tons of amazing power, but right now, unless you're a pro creator who can push the iPad Pro to its limits or unless apple actually decides to upgrade the software at WWDC, which is scheduled to happen in June 2021 to support pro level apps, you will not be able to harness all the tampon power or use it as a laptop replacement right now.

Yes, the m1 iPad Pro is the most powerful and the fastest iPad Pro, but my 2018 iPad Pro can still do everything that this brand new iPad Pro can do. Currently, both the 2018 and 2020 iPad. Pro models have standard USB c ports that transfer at USB 3.1 gen2 speeds, which basically means the USB on 2018 and 2020. iPad pro can transfer data at the speed of 10 gigabytes per second. In comparison, the 2021 iPad Pro models have received a significant upgrade.

The 2021 models now support thunderbolt and usb4 physically, it's still an USB type-c connection, but it now supports speeds up to 40 gigabytes per second, and this is a game changer. If you're someone who relies on fast SSDs as external storage for your iPad Pro, the thunderbolt also supports 10 gigabytes per second Ethernet, and now you can connect your iPad Pro to a higher resolution external display using high performance cables, but do note the iPad Pro still mirrors its display when connected to an external display, the 2018 and 2020 iPad. Pro models support 4g cellular connectivity, whereas the 2021 iPad Pro models now support 5g, and if you live in an excellent 5g area service, you can be happy. Also do note. Adding cellular connectivity feature will cost you an additional 200.

Battery life on the iPad. Pro has always been good. I get 8 to 9 hours of battery life on my 2018 iPad Pro, if I use it throughout the day and the 2020 on iPad Pro is about the same. There is no significant change in battery life when compared to the previous models. The 2018 iPad Pro was available in four different storage options, starting from has low at 64 GB and rising to GB, 256gb, GB and all the way up to a max of 1tb.

The updated 2020 models were almost similar. Apple. Just sits the 64gb option for 128gb, but with the new 2021 iPad. Pro models apple now offers 5 different storage options, starting from 128 GB and going all the way up to 2 dbs. So if you're someone who needs a ton of storage space apple, has you covered with the 2 tb option? Also, an interesting thing to note here: the 1tb and the 2tb 2021 models support 16gb of ram, whereas the lower storage models support 8gb of ram.

So yes, that m1 processor is paid with a lot of power. The 2018 and 2020 iPad. Pro models have the same pricing. The 11-inch model would cost 799 dollars and the 12.9 inch model would cost 999 dollars at the lowest capacity. The price changes, if you do consider cellular connectivity and adding extra storage space in comparison, the brand new 2021 11-inch iPad Pro still starts from 799 us dollars.

For the lowest capacity, but the 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro model now starts at 1099 instead of 999, and if you do offer higher storage option, that is 2 dbs, and you also choose seller connectivity. It will end up costing you 2 400 us dollars so yeah it can get pretty expensive. So now that I've gone over everything, that's new with the 2021 iPad Pro do. I think you should upgrade or get one if you're someone who's looking for a tablet or never bought an iPad before go and buy an iPad Pro it'll really be a game changer for you, but if you're, someone who owns a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro, and now you're confused, whether to upgrade or not, hear me out. Yes, the mini LED display is absolutely stunning, and the m1 processor is absolutely game changing.

But at the end of the day, your iPad Pro can still do everything that this brand new iPad Pro can do. The 2021 iPad Pro is surely the best iPad Pro ever launched, but it still has its limitations with software like the previous models like no multi-user support or no pro level app support. My suggestion would be wait till this year's WWDC to see what apple promises to do with all that insane power of the m1 processor and then decide to switch. Also, to answer the question: can this iPad Pro replace my laptop? For me, the iPad Pro is still my iPad and right now, if I do want a wrap log replacement, I would go for the 256gb MacBook Air, which runs on the same m1 processor and costs you 999 us dollars, whereas the 12.9-inch iPad Pro without the magic keyboard or any other accessory, still costs. You 1099 us dollars for 128gb of storage.

So, if you're looking for a laptop replacement, get the MacBook Air, so that's it guys. Those are all my thoughts on the 2018 iPad Pro versus the 2021 iPad Pro model. Do, let me know down in the comments.
