M1 iPad Pro 2021 - I should have waited! | WWDC 2021 By Alex Gear & Tech
If you didn't buy an M1 iPad Pro and were waiting for WWDC... You did the right thing. Apple have just announced... Nothing. Nothing is coming to the iPad Pro. At least nothing interesting.
And this... is a waste of money. Let me explain. This is the 2021 M1 iPad Pro. It has 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
I never wanted the 1TB storage. But the 16GB RAM got me thinking. Surely they are bringing something amazing to the iPad so we can take advantage of all that power. And Apple made you buy the 1TB if you wanted that 16GB RAM. And as I said in previous videos, I don't buy the latest iPad every year.
I was running a 2015 iPad Pro until recently so going for the 16GB RAM was a way of future proofing. But now I am thinking... Future proofing for what? I was watching the Apple WWDC event a few moments ago, and I wasn't really going to do a video about this. But I am so disappointed... It's an amazing device, the display is still one of the best displays I've ever seen.
Not just on a tablet. Full stop. We've been hearing for months that Apple would finally make the iPad more capable, that the iPad Pro could finally become a great pro device. But as it stands, yes you can do things on this iPad faster than you could on previous models. But it's still just an iPad.
With all the limitations it always had. So we don't really know for sure whether we will be able to properly use external monitors and really take full advantage of Thunderbolt and USB4 support until we can at least try the beta version of the software in a month or so. But let me tell you, it was a big blow for me. I wasn't expecting all the MacOS apps to run on iPad, but I was expecting somethiing.... Some sort of way of running heavier workloads on this device.
It could still happen eventually but right now, there is no sign of that. And that really annoys me. What did they announce? - Widgets - Ability to remove less frequent apps - App library, better categorisation of apps - Multitasking - It's 2021 Apple, well done. - Quick note - Ok that's nice. - Translate... They may have announced other things but I kinda lost interest by that point.
What am I gonna do with my 1 Terabyte and 16GB RAM iPad? Probably downgrade it. I still love the form factor, I still adore the Magic keyboard. And the display is incredible. But....16GB RAM for what? OK, I suppose more apps can run continuously. Is that enough to make me keep this version of the iPad? Not really.
Right now, I am not seeing it. So I will be thinking long and hard about my next move and will let you know here very soon. There are more important things in life than worrying about this stuff so let's keep smiling! My recommendation for anyone looking to get a new M1 iPad Pro is to make sure you look at those specs very closely, especially the 16GB RAM. And really ask yourself, do I need an iPad or am I better off with a MacBook or Mac Mini? And I will see you and your smiling faces on the next one.
