Living With The Asus ROG Phone 3 - Long Term Review After 3 Months!

Hey guys this Murdoch here- and this is the ROG phone 3, so I've been using this phone on and off ever since it was launched back in July, and today I'm going to tell you what it's like to live with the ROG phone 3, because, let's face it, this one is quite a unique phone. It's not like other phones out there, while companies are making their phones sleeker, slimmer, or they're. Cutting down on a couple of features. Asus has thrown everything out here and the ROG phone 3 is a spec monster, so without wasting any more time. Let's get started with my review of the ROG phone 3, but if you guys are visiting the channel for the first time, please subscribe press the bell icon so that you are notified every time. I make a new video and if you want any accessories for the ROG phone 3, you can always check out the channel sponsor.

Glaze ding. Com they've got this really nice case for the ROG phone 3, and they also have a tempered glass, so do check them out, use the promo code gizmo so that you can save 10 percent of your order. Now let me get started with this review. So by now you must have realized that the ASUS ROG phone 3 is not made for everyone. It's actually made for people who want the highest end specifications or for gamers, because gaming is one thing that this phone excels at, and it is probably the best smartphone right now when it comes to gaming, because ASUS has thrown in everything here.

First, you've got the snapdragon 865, plus the variant that I have gets 8gb of ram, and apart from that, you've got 144hz high, refresh rate display. You've got stereo speakers on the front. You've got air triggers, you've got two USB type-c ports, and you've also got a bunch of accessories that ASUS sells separately. And how can I forget the RGB logo? Anything gaming is not complete until you have a RGB logo and like the older ROG phones. This one also retains it on the back.

So if I talk about the gaming aspect of this phone, it was an absolute blast playing games on the ASUS ROG phone 3. I've already made two videos, one is the PUBG 60fps review and another one is a PUBG 90 fps review. Yes, this phone now supports the 90 fps update, and you can watch them on my Hindi channel. The long draw basically is that this phone handles those games very well. You're gonna, have fun playing it, and ASUS has also added a couple of extra features this time with the ROG phone 3.

, so normally you've got the air triggers. You've got the x mode, the real-time info. All of these things were present on the older ROG phones as well, but on the ROG phone 3 ASUS has actually split the air triggers as well, so normally you would have one function associated to right and another function associated to the left trigger, but on the ROG phone three, actually, you can assign two functions to one trigger, so basically it's like l1 r1 and l2 r2. So that is a pretty cool thing. Plus you can also shake the phone, and you can assign a feature to that, so in PUBG, I've assigned the triggers for firing and scoping and the inner triggers for jumping and crouching and the shake feature I've assigned for reloading.

So you can do these combinations and make your gameplay even easier, plus, unlike other phones, which only have one type c port. This phone gets two type c ports. So even if you're charging the phone with one of the ports, you can plug the headphones in the second one. Honestly, because it's a gaming phone, I would have preferred if ASUS kept the layout of the ROG phone 2 with the headphone jack. But the headphone jack is not here.

Everyone wants to sell their Bluetooth earphones, but only one complaint I have is that if they remove the headphone jack, they should have taken the USB port from this end, and they should have kept it above, because, when you're playing, the USB port does come in between if you're charging the phone or, if you have earphones connected. So if it was on the other end, that would have been great because ASUS does not even give you a 90 degree connector or a 90 degree charger inside the box, so if they had moved the USB type-c port up, that would have been great. This is just a small feedback that the design team can take and implement in the next ROG phone, but the phone performs excellent in gaming. I've got no complaints here, plus it has a HDMI out as well. So if you plan to do a streaming channel or you- you know- want to connect it to a monitor or something and just see your gameplay, you can do that.

So no worries about that. If the only thing that you want to do on your phone is gaming, then this is the phone to get. It does not disappoint, but everyone's, not a gamer right. So what about the other aspects of this phone? Let's talk about that. I want to start off with the camera.

So if you see the camera, the layout seems very similar to the ROG phone too, but this time we've got the Sony mix 686 sensors on the back. We've got the same wide angle lens as the ROG phone 2. I think, and we've also got a macro lens. If I talk about the camera quality straight up, it's a gaming phone. The camera quality is not that great, but it's not too shabby either, as you would think.

For example, if I give you a rough reference, we've got the OnePlus 8t, which is priced below the ROG phone 3, and we've got the OnePlus 8 pro, which is priced quite above the ROG phone 3 and the performance of this phone when it comes to the cameras, is somewhere in between I'm showing you some samples from the OnePlus 8t ROG phone 3 and the OnePlus 8 pro, and you guys can figure out for yourself which phone is better. Honestly, the cameras are okay. You can get good pictures out of it, especially in daylight, but the only problem is that is not as good as the OnePlus 8 pro or probably the iPhones or the Samsung's of that league. So you have to keep that in mind. It's ultimately a gaming phone, so the primary sensor is not going to blow you away, but you still can get good pictures out of it and for what it's worth.

This phone also supports g cam, so you can always you know, use a Google camera APK and improve the image quality. Further. I've already made a video about Guam for the ASUS ROG phone 3. You can check that out, and I'll drop a link for the latest APK in the description box. So in terms of photos, it's decent.

The wide-angle lens is also okay and the macro lens. Honestly, it's just there for namesake, it's not as good as what you see on the OnePlus 8 pro. So cameras are not the exciting part about this phone. The selfie camera also is decent. What I didn't like here is that sometimes it does have very pale skin tones when you compare it to other phones, so Guam can fix that to some extent, but ASUS needs to work on the front facing camera.

Processing too, when it comes to video ASUS has given a lot of things to this phone. You can record 8k video on this phone. You've got support for 4k 60, and you also have support for 4k 120 fps, which is absolutely crazy. They're literally utilizing the power of the snapdragon 865 plus, so the video quality actually was not that bad from the rog3. I'm playing some samples in comparison to the OnePlus 8 pro and you guys can figure out for yourself which phone did you like better in terms of cameras, and let me know in the comments so not a bad camera, but not the best either.

Next, I want to talk about the most controversial part of this phone, which is the display, so the ASUS ROG phone 3 has a similar size display as the ROG phone 2. But this time, instead of a 120 hertz AMOLED display ASUS, has gone with a 144 hertz AMOLED display they're literally pushing the boundaries here and if you see the website of the ROG phones here, if you see the launch event, ASUS did say that the display has been calibrated a lot, and it's really, really good panel. But in reality I was not very impressed with the display quality. So when it comes to the refresh rate, it's great you've got 144 hertz, it's very smooth, and you can also always put it down to 120 hertz, 90, hertz and 60 hertz. But when we talk about the actual display quality, there are a couple of issues that I was not a big fan of, and the majority of these issues are not ASUS's problem.

It's because this is a high refresh rate AMOLED panel. The first thing that I noticed was that there is a slight pinkish or a red distant on certain shades of gray at 120hz and 144hz. So when you are at full brightness and when you are in the dark mode on the phone and you open apps like YouTube or Google Chrome, there is a certain shade of gray in these apps and this color of gray looks very pinkish or reddish. When you are on 120, hertz or 144hz. As soon as you switch to 60 or 90, it is completely fine.

No issues noticed, so it's something to do with the high refresh rate and another issue that I noticed was that when the brightness is really, really low, so this happens only when the phone is at the minimum brightness as soon as you are like at 20, 30 brightness it fades away and at the minimum brightness you get a very strong pinkish or a reddish tint as well. So this was irrespective of the display being at 60 90, 120 or 144 hertz. So there is definitely a small issue with the AMOLED panel on this phone, and we've seen this with other phones as well. OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 pro also had the same issue which OnePlus finally sort of figured out with the OnePlus 8t. Maybe ASUS can tweak things a little with the software, but I think this is more or less a hardware related issue with high refreshed displays.

So if you're going to use your phone at 120, 144 hertz, certain shades of gray might be pinkish and on the lower brightness settings you might see some black crush or pink tinting issues, but do note that when you are at normal brightness levels or when you are looking at pitch black backgrounds, you won't have any problems, but this is definitely not the best display out there. If you want to consume a lot of content, it supports HDR. Python l1 is also properly supported, but the quality of display, I feel, is better on the OnePlus 8 pro, so yeah ASUS definitely needs to work on the display department. It's a good attempt from them to have a 144hz display, but they're sort of limited by the quality of these high refresh rate panels right now. So if you watch a lot of movies and TV shows on your phone, and you primarily want to get it for content consumption, I would recommend you to look somewhere else, because, while the stereo speakers on this phone are absolutely insane, the display sort of you know takes that charm down a little when you compare it to other phone on its own.

It's still a great panel, but when you put it side by side, you will notice the difference so snapdragon, 865 plus, and it's a gaming phone, and you've got a 144 hertz display. So the question would be: how is the battery life on the ROG phone 3 like the ROG phone 2 ASUS, has bundled a 6 000 William hours of battery here, and the battery life has been absolutely great on the ROG phone. Three. I've got zero complaints with it. When I was using this phone as my primary device, I had the ambient light on all the time.

My phone was at a constant 144 hertz and the brightness was anywhere between 80 and 90 percent, and even after all of this, with a little of gaming with a mixed usage of Wi-Fi and mobile data, I could still manage to go through one single day and even more actually and my screen on time was roughly around seven and a half hours, which is absolutely great. It's good that ASUS has given you six thousand million pounds of battery, because even with a heavy usage, you will easily make it through one single day. You don't have to worry about the battery life on the ROG phone three, even with 144 hertz, even with these RGB lights on you're still going to make it through a day and even more, and you don't need to worry about the battery life on the ROG phone three. When we talk about the charging, the charging is not as fast as the competition, but then you have to remember that this is a six thousand William hours of battery, and it charges from zero to a hundred in roughly one hour and twenty-five minutes, I've done a charging test in comparison with the mi 10 and the one plus eight pro. So you guys can check it out here.

But the point is the charging speed is fairly fast, the battery lasts quite long, so you don't have to worry about the charging and the battery life combo and if you're worried about the health of the battery, ASUS also has a couple of battery optimization modes where you can only charge the battery up to eighty percent for a longer health of the battery, because, let's face it, 80 percent of 6000 my of battery still 4800 and that's more than enough for the majority of the people to get through a full working day. Yeah, the battery life and the charging combo once again has been great, and I've got no complaints with it. The ASUS ROG phone 3 currently runs on android 10, and you've got ASUS ROG UI, which is more or less like their zen UI that you have seen on their recent devices. So if you see the software experience on this phone, it's more or less like stock android. A lot of these elements that you will see here are something that you would see on a stock android phone and overall the software experience has been great.

It's clean, it's bloatware, free! You don't get any useless app in the phone, now banned, apps, no intrusive, apps! No ads! No shady notifications, nothing like that. So the software experience is very clean, but it's not like stock android, where you don't get any features. Asus has included a lot of features in the ROG UI, so you've got this armory crate app where you've got like a ton of gaming features, and even apart from that, you've got a lot of these gestures and a lot of these small features like dual apps that you can actually use, and they will come in quite handy compared to a bone stock, android phone. So when it comes to features, ASUS is on par with other players in this segment plus, their UI is bloatware free, it's clean, and you won't face any problems. It's fast, it's snappy, and it runs at 144hz without any major stutters or hiccups, which is a great thing to have.

But my one major concern with ASUS phones is always about the updates, because ROG phone 3 is directly competing with OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 pro and OnePlus track record with software has been absolutely phenomenal. These phones are already running on android 11, whereas, as of now, ASUS does not have any statement as to when will the android 11 update hits on the ROG phone 3. Apart from that it's October right now, and this phone has the august security patch, so I think ASUS pushes out a security patch once in every two or three months. So when it comes to updates, definitely they have to prove themselves here, because OnePlus has already been proving themselves since the last two three years. So when it comes to the software updates, I'm not sure how good they are going to be here.

You will get updates, I'm very sure. The ROG phone, three sooner or later will get android 11, but if the brand can give you more clarity- and they are more- you know uh, quick about the updates. That would really help them a lot, because I think updates is one feature that stops a lot of people from buying these phones, because a lot of people had bad experiences with the max pro m1 and the max pro m2 and that's rubbing off on the ROG phone. So ASUS definitely needs to work on their software updates and if they could give fast updates like OnePlus, I think a lot more people would pick their phones because their UI is perfect. I have no complaints here, it's only when it comes to the reliability and updates things are a little dicey.

Apart from that, if we talk about some other things, the build quality on the phone has been great. It's as good as the ROG phone 2, and here ASUS has tried to sort of tone down the design a little in comparison to the ROG phone 2, so that this looks more elegant. But in terms of the in-hand feel this phone feels solid. It is quite heavy, so if you're, someone who likes a compact phone, this is totally not for you, because this phone is really, really big, and it's quite heavy too. So it's not for people who, like lighter phones and I feel actually ASUS- should launch a mini version of the ROG phone 3.

I think that could potentially sell a lot, but no complaints with the design and the build quality. Here. I really like this cooler design, the angle that you've got with the flash and the camera cut out and that RGB logo on the back everything's great, no complaints here when it comes to the call quality and network reception as well. Everything is good. You've got dual sim support here and both of them support, 4g and you've also got 5g support because we've got snapdragon, 865 plus so anytime.

In the future, 5g hits the Indian market. Your ROG phone 3 will not have any problems in supporting 5g. You've got an in-display fingerprint sensor and like the ROG phone 2, it's good. It's fast, it's accurate, and I didn't encounter any problems with it. The haptic feedback on this phone is also great.

It gives you nice feedback when you're typing or using the phone. So that's good, and this phone actually has four microphones. So when you're gaming, and you accidentally block any of the microphone, it's going to use the other ones and your audio will not be muffled or muted when you're talking to your teammate, so that is great, plus you've also got 280 hertz of touch response rate and trust me. That thing is absolutely phenomenal. When you're gaming I've talked about it in my gaming review of the ROG phone 3, so I would ask you to go there and watch it, and the only two things that this phone misses out on is a proper IP rating and wireless charging.

If you use these features a lot, you might miss them on the ROG phone 3. But personally I haven't really used wireless charging. I have the OnePlus 8 pro. I have the iPhone I've been using my iPhone for a year now, and I've never put it down on a wireless charger, because I don't own any and I don't use wireless charging, but IP rating would have been a good addition on the ROG phone 3. So these are two things that ASUS has missed out on, and they should probably get it on the ROG phone 4.

But then, overall, the question is: should you buy the ROG phone 3 or not? Well, honestly, I feel that this phone still sort of appeals to only a niche audience. I don't think this is a mass market phone, an average user who wants to buy a phone for 50 55 000. I think they would probably be more happy with other alternatives in the market, but if you're buying a phone specifically for gaming ROG phone 3 is a no-brainer and a lot of people want Indo-Chinese alternatives so for them as well ROG phone 3 is a perfect phone. It gets the basics right. You've got great performance for a gamer.

This phone is going to be a delight. The cameras are decent too. Battery is great. There is a minor thing with the display, but if you can deal with that, I think overall ROG phone 3 is a good buy for 50 000 rupees, the 8 128 GB variant sells for 50 000, rupees, and they've also recently introduced the 12 128 GB variant as well. I think that one is priced at 52, 000, rupees and certain cards sometimes have 10 discount, so you can avail that and if you're getting a good deal on the ROG phone 3, you can consider it in comparison to the OnePlus 8t or the OnePlus 8 pro for an average user.

Still, it's a little more difficult to recommend the ROG phone 3 because of the updates and all of those things, but I think ASUS is heading in the right direction. With the ROG phone 2, they really got the pricing right and a lot of people chose that phone and with the ROG phone three they've brought in a lot of improvements, and I hope that they keep continuing on the same path as of now. This is my review of the ASUS ROG phone. Three, if you guys have any more questions about it, please let me know in the comments a lot more videos are coming very soon about the OnePlus 8t OnePlus 8 pro me 10 me 10 t, so if you haven't subscribed to the channel till now, please subscribe and press the bell icon.
