iPhone 8 Plus - Is it Better Than My Camera?

What's up YouTube Reggie here back again with my video today, I am going to start a new segment. It's called! Is it better than my camera? So what it is, is I'm going to be comparing smartphone's portrait mode entry against my actual camera. So a lot of these modern-day smartphones are coming with dual cameras, and you know what they're really trying to do is take the depth information from another lens, and you know, add some Gaussian blur to it and basically emulate what an actual camera would do with a wide aperture lens. So you know you get that blurry background you get that bouquet, and it really isolates your subject that what you're doing, and it's just awesome, so I'm gonna- have my iPhone 8 plus against my Sony a7 mark 2 and the lens I have on this. Is a 50 millimeter at 128, so, basically standard wide portrait, lens, I'm going to be shooting wide open with it, so full fully open, aperture no holds bar and just mega-mega bouquet. Okay, make up.

Okay, just make a bouquet okay, so I really just want to see how they do and see how far the computational photography has come. So let's go ahead and see how the shots came out. Let's go okay, so this was taken with iPhone e+ really liking the quality. Here, a great dynamic range you can see my back. The Sun is properly blown out as it should, because it's the Sun and the clouds came out really nice perfect detail, I'm all the way back there in the clouds and see the people playing volleyball out there in the back and the foreground looks good.

They bumped up the shadow, so you get the HDR effect and yeah perfect like in this one, and this is the shot I took with my 87 mark -. You can tell that the detail is just way up. There. I mean you can see just how deep the depth of field is. Regarding the people in the background, you can even see some lights, the stadium lights back there colors are awesome everything just perfect, I'm really liking.

The sharpness I mean you can see like every leaf and these trees in the back here, I'll booster, the shadows up a little, so we get an HDR effect here. Just really awesome detail, I love this shot. Okay, so now you can see them here side by side. The iPhone did pretty good I. Think I had to scale the picture up just to get the framing right, but the quality and stuff obviously is not as sharp the deeper you're going to the picture, because you don't have the option of changing your aperture and really narrowing in and getting those eagle eyes in on here and cam and being able to focus really deep, not too bad, though I mean I, really like how the clouds came out, they came out pretty decent.

So with this picture, I like it a lot, it looks like that the portrait mode did a good job of computing, the depth of the background, and that might be attributed really just to how far the background is. So it has an easy time of finding out which areas to add that Gaussian blur, since it's already probably inherently blurry just from the telephoto lens, so it looks pretty crisp, especially you can see around her like head in here, looks perfect. So this is with the set of mic ? and you can just see the quality in the bouquet. In the background, you can see the little poke balls in the back, and everything is just so buttery smooth I mean wow. Just look at the background.

I mean it's just it's gone, and it just looks. Awesome I really liked a shot good shot. I could have exposed better on the a7 mark ?, so I could have bumped up the shadows, a little more so definitely kudos to the iPhone A+ HDR capabilities. That's definitely hit strong point, I really like that, but you can just compare the bouquet and how buttery smooth it is on my camera compared to the iPhone and I mean just you can see the both balls in the back. It just looks so crispy, so another shot of my life here and kind of the same thing.

Good chef looks good and again the same thing. I would say the know. The bouquet is just extremely smooth here they are together, so you can see we were in the park and had a little photo shoot. It was just a perfect time to shoot during cold an hour. Awesome light perfectly.

You can see. I just noticed this. You can see that between her arms, it didn't catch the depth information. So the background between her arms isn't blurred out which I didn't notice it at first. But that is like that.

So it looks like it's getting a little darker I, really like the detail that gets in the foreground, with the chain-link fence cool shot. Since it's a little darker, it looks like they had a Humble die so a little but overall great shot and the shot with the a7 went to this awesome, colors excellent detail, I mean you can see like every strand in her hair. The background is just buttery, smooth lowballs all over the place. It's just a great picture: okay, so here they are side by side and of course it seems like we have the same recurring theme. I'm going to have to attribute the quality of the picture for the iPhone due to the light at the time.

I guess it was a good time to take a picture, perfect lighting, but it might have been too low for a smartphone camera. So that's why it's not as crisp as you would want it to be. Just to close my phone, a botanist is that the portrait mode on the iPhone in place plus is perfect. I think it renders the background very well. There are some quirks, sometimes it'll, clip something around that or the face.

As I mentioned early, the limitation of the portrait modes is gonna, be how well your telephoto lens perform. Still I'm going to wrap it up here. Let me know what you guys think and if you like this segment overall I'm really impressed with how the iPhone 8 plus performs, if I'm just doing some casual shooting, definitely I can leave my camera at home and just bring my phone, and you know if I want to do some portrait mode shots. You know it does a good job, I really impressed with it, although it's not as good as a full-frame camera, it's its pretty good. I'm going to leave it at that.

This is read to you, and I'm signing out. If you guys liked this video feel free to give it a thumbs up. If you haven't subscribed already subscribe for more videos like this, and I'll, see you next time, thanks for watching guys, take care.
