IPHONE 12 PRO vs. PROFESSIONAL CAMERA // PORTRAIT MODE & LENSES

Good morning, so right now, it's currently 8 30 6 in the morning, I'm heading off to Tamara, which is a city just two hours south of where I live, and since so many of you guys enjoyed the video where I did DSLR versus iPhone. I thought I would get an updated version where I do r5 versus iPhone 12. Now the only problem is, I don't actually own an iPhone 12, but I do own the r5. So I thought that I would head down the thumb to meet my friend Yoko, who actually has the iPhone 12, and we're going to use his iPhone 12 and my r5 to make this video happen. Just arrived to tamper now I have to go and find my good friend Yoko he's going to help me muddle in the photos as well he's kind enough to lend me his iPhone 12 for the shoot. Look at this guy cruising in style, whoa who's, this guy from the future hello Togo.

What is up? Thanks for coming to shoot with me for today, you're looking fresh, lucky you're you're ready to model a little, so Togo is the iPhone 12 provider and the model for the day. I think he looks pretty dang good on that tier all right. We just made it to location number one, and we're going to be shooting with this cool little archway right here, so it's gonna, framing Togo there- this really nice location here in tamper, all right, all right. So this is the same location, but we're just using a different angle here. There's this cool little tunnel way right here, and we're going to have to right in the middle of this whole area, so there's nice framing here and the leading lines from the roof leading to Togo.

So this is a nice spot all right. Let's see we can get done with shooting with the iPhone 12 and the canon r5, and we'll see what kind of portraits we get all right. We were just walking the city and I happened to come by this really cool spot. So we decided that this is going to be location. Two three- I guess this is three now check this out.

This is too, and he's got these really cool lights, just leaning towards him. So I think there's going to be some sick opportunities right here. It's starting to snow, we're here at location number three, my good friend Togo he's doing a great job modeling. This is this cool huge bridge. With these again leading lines, I feel like there's a theme of the day leading lines.

I guess that's when you're shooting architecture, you really wanna, embrace the lines, so we're going to shoot some more portraits here, and then we're going to grab lunch. We have gotten some insane weather today. We just went from snow to the sunshine, and we're at this really epic bridge. So we're going to try to use this archway to get a nice frame shot for photo number five, all right. So I'm back home now from Hamburg, we had an amazing time shooting with Yoko, and we topped the day off with the most delicious pizza from this restaurant called sicko all right.

So I've now transferred all the photos from the iPhone 12 Pro and the canon r5 onto my computer, and I've edited the photos to look as similar as possible to each other with the same kind of grade, and I think you guys are going to have a very interesting time determining which one is which, so we're going to put a little of guessing game. We're going to have five rounds where you guys gotta decide whether camera a or camera b is the iPhone 12 Pro or the canon r5. Are you guys ready? Are you guys ready to guess alright so round one? We got camera a and camera b, which one is which and don't you guys be pixel peeping right now. I know a lot of you guys right now are going to take some screenshots and try to zoom in and see so camera a and camera b, which camera is which all right camera a way the iPhone 12 Pro and camera b was the canon r5 alright round two we got camera a and camera b, which one is which all right camera a way. The canon, r5 and camera b was the iPhone 12 Pro round three.

We got camera a, and we got camera b for this one. It's camera a way the canon, r5 and camera b was the iPhone 12 Pro all right round. Four, this is going to be a hard one, because even I was having a hard time seeing the difference between the two photos. So we got camera a and camera b camera a way the iPhone 12 Pro and camera b was the canon, r5 and now round number five, the very last round camera a and camera b, the camera a way canon r5 and camera b. Was the iPhone 12 Pro all right guys out of five rounds? How many did you guys get right? How many did you guess correctly? I would love to hear the results so comment below and tell me out of the five rounds.

How many did you guys guess right and if you didn't guess all five right or if you didn't guess any of them right, please don't feel too bad about yourself, because, to be honest, it's quite hard I feel like. If, right now I was to post some of those portraits on my Instagram account and say shot with the canon r5 most people probably be like yeah cool that looks awesome, and they wouldn't be able to really see the difference between the iPhone 12 Pro or the canon r5. Now the reason why a mobile phone, like the iPhone 12 Pro, can even compete with a professional mirrorless camera like the canon r5, which is a very expensive setup, is because it's using computational photography and using features like deep fusion, so where the canon mirrorless cameras are trying to bank on using the sensors and the lenses to get good results. A mobile phone like the iPhone 12 Pro is trying to use software in order to get the best results, and I don't know if you guys saw the podcast on the Maddie and Pete show where Maddie and Pete interviewed some executives from apple and one of the apple execs was explaining. Basically, when you take a photo with the iPhone, it's not just taking one photo, it's actually taking, probably hundreds of photos and determining which photo had the best sharpness which photo had the best highlights shadows, and it's combining all those photos together to get you the best final results, which is insane it's insane to think how far mobile photography has come and what kind of photos you can actually achieve with an iPhone alone.

Now hearing this news, some of you guys might get really confused and think to yourself wait a minute why in the world have I spent thousands of dollars buying a mirrorless camera and all these lenses, when I could just be shooting on an iPhone 12 Pro and get really high quality photos, and the truth is as amazing as the iPhone 12 Pro is. It still is quite limited sure you can go out and take some nice portraits of somebody, but you got to have the right conditions and the subject's got to be quite still, and you can't be too far away from the subject, because otherwise uh the portrait mode won't work. So there are limitations with iPhone 12 Pro, which you won't get when you're shooting with a mirrorless camera like the canon r5, you can shoot as far as you want from the subject. As close as from the subject as you want, you can shoot in whatever conditions, whether it's really bright conditions or darker conditions that you can do with the mirrorless camera. You can shoot people who are moving quickly like sports photography, or you can take really long time, lapse, photography and long exposure photography and get high quality photos, whereas with the iPhone 12 Pro a lot of those things, you'd be actually quite limited.

So there is still a place for having professional gear like a canon, r5 and expensive lenses, and then there is a situation in place when you should and can use mobile phones like the iPhone 12 Pro. So, who would I suggest the iPhone 12 Pro for? I think this is a great question to ask, because I don't personally think that everyone should actually go out and invest thousands of dollars into buying a mirrorless camera and really expensive lenses. I think for people who don't necessarily want to become the master photography, but just need to take photos here and there, for example, if you're a designer or your social media content creator, and you do need to go- take some photos in order for you to create some sort of designs or posters. But you don't want to be taking photos full time. Then that's when I would suggest the iPhone 12 Pro for you, because you can go out quickly, snap, some really great high quality photos and just edit them right away on your mobile phone uh export them out and then use them in your designs right away, whereas using a mirrorless camera like the canon r5, it's going to be very expensive and just the whole process, it's going to be a lot longer.

You've got to shoot the photos transfer on your computer, edit them on Lightroom and bring them back onto your phone or wherever you're using to create your designs. So I think, having the iPhone 12 Pro if you're the type of person that you don't want to be a master photography, but you still need to shoot photos. I would highly suggest the iPhone 12 Pro as well. If you're, in a situation where you just don't, have the money yet to buy uh more expensive gear like the canon, r5 or lenses, I would really highly suggest for you to start practicing with an iPhone. Maybe you already have the iPhone in your pocket, but you don't have the money to buy gear yet, and I would really highly recommend for those types of people to instead of limiting yourself thinking.

Well, I don't have that piece of gear, so I can't take great photos, recognize and realize that you have a really amazing tool right in your front pocket, and you can go out with an iPhone 12 Pro, for example, or even an older model, and you can learn how to take great photos. You can learn how to take advantage of great lighting. You can learn compositional techniques like even in the photos that I took. I don't know if you noticed, but I was using a lot of leading lines and framing and different compositional techniques in order to get a great photo. So I would highly suggest for someone who yet doesn't have the money to buy the professional camera gear and just instead go out with an iPhone, for example, the iPhone 12 Pro and go, and just shoot learn to train your eye.

Learn how to take great photos with an iPhone that way when you do have money one day to invest in better gear. You are gonna, be so ahead of the game already, and you're. Going to know how to shoot photos. So those are the types of people that I would really highly recommend using the iPhone 12 Pro, because it is an amazing tool and in some ways it's so underestimated. Honestly, it's really insane to think about how far mobile photography has come, and I just can't wait to see what the future has in store for us as creatives so guys.

Hopefully, you enjoyed this fun little comparison between the iPhone 12 Pro and the canon r5, and hopefully your guys egos are not hurting.
