I Ordered The Most POWERFUL iPad Pro...

This video is sponsored by Squarespace. This is a therapy session kind of video, because I think I just spent more money on my iPad Pro than I did on my laptop hey. What's going on everyone Greg here and just before making this video, I was having a complete crisis: a complete breakdown mentally physically and even spiritually, because I couldn't decide if I should buy an 8 gigabyte or 16 gigabyte iPad Pro, because for those of you that don't know, apple sells two different memory versions of the iPad Pro, because there's actually eight gigabytes of ram on models that are below one terabyte of storage and iPad pros with one terabyte of storage or above get 16 gigabytes of memory. That's right! You can now buy an iPad Pro that weighs one pound that comes with two terabytes of storage and 16 gigabytes of ram. So I took advice from my friend Gary the everyday dad who always recommends that when you're pre-ordering- something even if you think you might want it, you should just order it and then decide later, because pre-orders can go quickly as we've seen with this new iPad Pro. So I did just that.

I ordered two versions of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro a 256 gigabyte version and a one terabyte version. Now, while one terabyte of storage would be nice, I'm still sitting here pretty comfortably on my iPad Air with 256 gigabytes, and I still have a lot of breathing room and I don't need the extra storage, but the iPad was a device that never shipped with a lot of memory. In fact, the well-reviewed 2018 iPad Pro, which most people still say, is fast enough for everything they would ever want to do on. An iPad only has four gigabytes of ram on models below one terabyte and the 2020 a12z iPad Pro upgrade made six gigabytes of ram standard on all models. So, even if you were looking at the base model, m1 iPad Pro that now comes with eight gigabytes of memory, which might not sound like a huge jump, but it's a 33 increase in total memory available.

So if you're coming from a 2020 iPad Pro with six gigabytes of ram, a 16 gigabyte version would be a 166 percent increase in total memory available from the previous iPad. Pro version so right now, as iPadOS stands, is there actually a single app available on the platform that can take advantage of that much memory? It's a lot of memory for an iPad. Now, yes, on a Mac, you can easily imagine what you would be able to do with that total increase in memory and, in fact, on a Mac.16 gigabytes is nice, but there's so many applications and use cases you could think of that would be able to take advantage of much more memory. Applications like complex video, editing or complex photo editing with lots of layers and adjustments, and so on can quickly start eating into your allocated ram on a Mac, not to mention that max can even swap memory from the hard drive with the ram giving you a virtual pool of ram. You can store for your programs.

Even if you go past your system's physical ram limitations. Of course, the iPad Pro does have pro apps like video editing with suffusion, and it even has a version of photoshop and complex drawing apps like procreate. That can take advantage of multiple layers and can use more ram. However, ram is much better managed on an iPad than on a Mac, because for the most part, when you're using an iPad, your system resources are usually focused on a single application. Sure there are certain apps where you can put up a split screen view and even get a slide over window, but really at most on the iPad, you can have about three active apps open on the screen.

At the same time, with the mac, you can have a lot more applications open in fact, on a Mac, even basic users can have a speed boost to system responsiveness by having larger amounts of ram, because then you can leave all of your applications open and running in the background, without having to close them again. The iPad manages this all for you and the mac can use multiple windows and multiple tabs for programs. The extra ram, whether you personally need it or not. Well, on a Mac, you can understand why certain users would need more ram or want more ram, and I don't think we can really say the same right now for the iPad Pro now. I do think there is a reason for this increase in available memory.

That might not be apparent just right now, and I don't think we'll have to wait too much longer to find out just what that is. But before we talk about that, we don't have to speculate on how the best way to build a website is because we all know the easiest and fastest way to do. Now, as impressive as it is that the iPad Pro is now shipping with the amazingly fast m1 processor, which is literally going to be so much faster than so many full-fledged laptops on the market right now, that's kind of insane that buildup of CPU and GPU power that has been a steady increase on the iPad year after year.

We were expecting a more powerful CPU this year, but that's not the same story for this memory. Configurations that sudden jump up to 16 gigabytes of memory can be explained in either two ways. First, is the cynical approach, and that apple is just needlessly shipping a spec that no one really needs all in order to just artificially boost the price of the iPad Pro and get suckers like me to purchase it and, while I'm sure apple wants to make as much money as possible. I also don't think that is the long-term plan for shipping. These higher end configurations, because the second explanation and the one that I personally believe in is that the iPad Pro is about to go through another transformative period.

That starts to take even more advantage of the increased system resources available on the platform, and this could come in multiple ways. The first and most obvious is just to start shipping their own pro versions of apps. That can really take advantage of this increase in performance and memory, so Apple could set and raise the bar for apps on the iPad by making iPadOS versions of Final Cut Pro logic, Xcode and so on. That offered similar features and functionality to the same apps that you would find on the mac, and it might even be easy for them. Considering they've already optimized those apps to run on the m1, processor and hey apple could even take this one step.

Further. Maybe apple wants you to still buy an iPad and a mac, and they could start offering features like iCloud syncing between all of your projects, so that, if your main workstation is your Mac, you could say start editing your video there and then, because those video projects are synced over iCloud. You could then take that project and then start working on your iPad, and it's all synced through iCloud. I think that would be a really cool feature to still encourage users to buy both devices. A more drastic approach would be to bring over an entirely new system for multitasking and window management on the iPad Pro something I don't think will actually be coming this year, but I would never rule out that a better operating system for managing multiple apps would be in the works for the iPad.

I do think apple is working on something for the future here, and I think they would be stupid not to, but the most drastic and probably not ever going to happen. Don't even count on its situation is that apple is going to let the iPad Pro run a version of macOS which granted yes, iPad. Pros and macs now have the same storage and memory configurations, but it just seems like it would be a really weird and inconsistent experience from an apple product that is still primarily supposed to be used with a touchscreen interface. So I just can't see apple ever letting users put a bootable version of macOS on the iPad. I really don't think it's happening.

I hate to your know, say that to you, if you had your hopes up uh, but I would say this is still going to run some version of iPadOS for the time being, perhaps though we may just be in the beginning of an even bigger project that would be again an entirely new operating system, an operating system that can be used for every apple product, from the iPhone to the iPad and yes, even the mac, a shared operating system and one that adapts to the strength and form factors of each different product. If that is the case again, I still think we're years away from seeing that sort of concept. I wouldn't expect to see it this year at WWDC, but it is an exciting idea to think about, but I think the main point here is that WWDC 2021 is literally just around the corner, and while these iPad pros will be shipping around May 21st, that's just a few weeks away from getting a first glimpse into the beta version of iPadOS. I believe at this event, we will know for certain whether a 16 gigabyte iPad Pro makes sense, whether Apple is working on unique features, apps or just something that can truly take advantage of all of this additional power available right at our fingertips. With that in mind, I cancelled my 256 gigabyte iPad Pro order, and I kept the one terabyte order which granted that does go against my own advice for people watching this video, because you should never buy a product based on rumors of features or even the promise of certain features coming soon, because this 12.9 inch version of the iPad Pro is seventeen hundred and ninety-nine dollars not to mention I got a new 350 magic keyboards to go with it. So a two thousand one hundred and fifty dollar product that granted has the hardware and power to make that product worth the price.

But for me the big missing key is the software, because right now, as I'm sitting here, waiting for this iPad Pro to show up, I can't think of a way right now, where I can truly utilize. All of that additional power and memory with the current software that the iPad currently has, but I'm hoping I'm hoping that something greater will be coming soon. So, yes, I ordered the most powerful version of the iPad Pro again most powerful, not most expensive. I know there's a two terabyte version out there. Don't start writing that in the comments I ordered the most powerful iPad Pro with 16 gigabytes of memory, and I'm truly hoping that I can take advantage of all of this power all right everyone and that's why I ordered the 16 gigabyte version of the iPad Pro.

Please I'm really interested to hear your opinions on this in the comments below. Do you think that I'm stupid for ordering this one terabyte version of the iPad Pro when I don't need all that storage, and I'm just ordering it for the extra memory uh if you're ordering an iPad Pro, do you plan to go with one of the eight gigabyte versions or the 16 gigabyte versions? Again anything you have to say about this. I want to hear in the comments below so give me your opinion. Let me have it straight um if you like this video, be sure to give me a like if you want to see more videos from this channel, including a future review of that 16 gigabyte iPad Pro, maybe I'll, you know have another face pop. Maybe I would have made a giant mistake.

I think that's going to be an interesting video if you want to order an iPad Pro. If you want to use one of my affiliate links, I will leave those in the description below and as always thank you so much for watching, and I will see you all in the next video take care. Everyone.
