How To - Install SIM Cards in Lenovo Laptops and Tablets

Some Lenovo laptops and tablets come equipped with SIM card readers that allow access to cellular networks. SIM cards are very easy to use as long as a few simple guidelines are followed. The most common SIM cards are mini-SIM, micro SIM, and nano SIM. There are also punch-out or multi-fit SIM cards that allow conversion of a larger SIM to a smaller SIM. We do not recommend using a punch-out or multi-fit SIM card in Lenovo systems, as it can cause intermittent connection issues or even damage SIM card readers. If a multi-fit SIM card is the only option for a system that takes a micro SIM, do not break the nano SIM portion of the chip.

Never try to place a punched-out SIM card back into the larger card it was removed from, and do not use SIM card adapters, as they may also damage the mechanism. There are two different types of SIM card mechanisms in Lenovo laptops and tablets: SIM card trays and SIM card push-pull slots. SIM card trays can be opened with a straightened paper clip. Insert the paper clip into the hole and push inward until the tray is released. Remove the tray from the system.

Some paper clips will barely fit into the hole and may not be able to engage the button to open the tray. Try using a smaller paper clip if this occurs. Place the micro SIM card into the tray with the metallic contacts facing up. Align the tray with the slot and carefully slide it in. If the SIM card starts to wedge between the slot and the tray, do not continue pushing it in.

Remove the tray and realign the card before placing the tray back into the slot. To remove a micro SIM card from a push-pull slot, remove the cover by placing an index finger into the notch on the cover and pressing down. Using your thumb or index finger press inward on the card until it clicks. The card will now come out from the slot far enough to remove it. To replace the card, insert it into the slot and press inward until it clicks into place.

Then place the cover over the slot and press it in, even with the bezel. Never use a pry tool or tweezers to remove a SIM card from a push-pull slot. The same type of push-pull mechanism for nano SIM cards is found in Lenovo tablets. In this case a non-metallic pry tool or spudger may be used to carefully assist pushing the card into the slot.
