Google Pixel 5 vs OnePlus 8T Camera Comparison and REVIEW

I feel like a comparison between the Oneplus 8T and the Google Pixel 5 is the ultimate showdown, not only because of their similar price points but because they bring a notable contrast of styles that becomes more apparent as you use these phones, especially back to back. These phones have different priorities to every single component in their construction that makes this comparison so appealing. The strong suits of one phone are the weakness of the other and it makes for a very interesting dilemma when choosing between the two. Let’s talk about the camera performance for both phones. For the front facing camera, as you can see in the video comparison, the dynamic range in the background really suffers on the OnePlus 8T compared to the Pixel 5. The electronic stabilization in both cameras seem good enough and there are differences in the color tone which can be left for personal preference.

But, there is no denying that the pixel 5 here is the winner, having more details that are seemingly blurred on the OnePLus 8T. With the selfie photos we see a similar story, the colors are a bit more blown up on the OnePLus 8T and lacks detail all over the frame, especially when compared to the Pixel 5. Look at the trees in the background for reference. This is a trend that you notice when you compare the photos with the front facing camera. For the portrait shots, both phones do a very good job.

In fact, in this specific photo the Pixel 5 cuts off my beard a little bit while the 8T gets it perfectly. Portrait shots with both phones can be a hit or miss. In low light photography, it is more of the same. The OnePlus 8T suffers in dynamic Range and overall detail in the picture. There is considerable more noise on the onePlus 8T but it really is no surprise here with the Pixel 5 being one of the best low light shooters in the market.

The noise with the selfie camera on the pixel 5 is nearly non-existent, it's amazing what they can do with a 3 year old sensor. With the main rear sensor is where the battle really gets tough, especially when shooting shots with good lighting. Dynamic Range in both shots with the main rear sensor are excellent, where it obviously differs in color reproduction a little bit with the 8T going for a more saturated and colorful look and the Pixel 5 going for a more accurate representation of the scene. Overall, it’s personal preference at this point and you can’t go wrong with either one. With the ultra wide sensor both phones take excellent pictures with great dynamic range.

At this rate, when you have decent lighting in the outdoors it’s a toss up between these two. Both Ultra wide cameras have a decent FOV and you won't be dropping any quality when switching to these sensors at least in decent lighting. I have to say, in certain scenarios, with the ultra wide camera in the 8T it loses a bit of dynamic range when compared to the Pixel 5 probably thanks to trying to up the colors and saturation a little bit but overall you won't be disappointed with this sensor. With the Oneplus 8T teh 2x zoom suffers the greatest loss in detail and dynamic range compared to the Pixel 5. The Pixel 5 suffers a bit of quality compared to its main sensor but that's to be expected as it’s using an electronic zoom instead of another telephoto lens.

BOth of these phones opt for an ultra wide camera instead of a proper telephoto lens and in my opinion, it's a good choice as it is something that you would use more often. In low light is where the Pixel 5 really separates itself in the camera department. The Oneplus 8T loses a lot of detail and even looks a little blurry while trying to up the colors in daylight situations but in low light it really is a step back in performance. The Pixel 5 is a low light powerhouse thanks to its google software magic, the photos doesn't look blurry in any way while keeping the details and dynamic range in the picture. Using the front facing camera is more of the same story.

Dynamic range is significantly worse on the 8T and has that blurry effect on the background. The winner here, at least in the low light department is definitely the Pixel 5. For the design, both phones have exceptional build quality, both have a metal frame build but they couldn't be further apart in their takes on a premium build. The OnePlus 8T goes for a more traditional glass back design which feels good in the hand and adds heft to the phone but at the same time is a lot more fragile and more slippery compared to the Pixel 5. Talking of the Pixel 5, it features a soft touch coating on top of the metal frame which makes it feel plenty sturdy and at the same time adding a ton of grip to the phone making it feel premium and at the same time practical not being afraid to hold while walking and thinks of that nature.

Both of these devices have fingerprint scanners but do it with different philosophies. The OnePlus 8T has a fancy optical in display fingerprint reader while the Pixel 5 has a more traditional approach with the tried and true design on the back of the phone. Both are plenty accurate and work just as fast. The display is also where these phones diverge a little bit. With the OnePlus 8T having a beautiful 6.55 inch OLED display with excellent color reproduction and overall a much bigger display compared with the Pixel 5. The Pixel 5 has a 6.0 inch oled display which is definitely much smaller in comparison. The OnePlus 8T has a 120 hz screen while the Pixel 5 has a 90 hz display.

Using the two, differentiating between 90 and 120 hz can be a bit of a challenge but if you had the option of one or the other of course you would go with the 120 hz screen. Both are fast and snappy in this regard though. The front facing camera cut out on the Pixel 5 is a little bit larger and this is important to keep in mind as most apps use the lowest part of the cut out to determine the size of the notification shade which you’ll see in most apps. Screen brightness in both phones is excellent, with the 8T officially rated to reach as high as 1100 knits, you won't have any problems in direct sunlight. However, much to my surprise in direct sunlight the Pixel 5 really holds up really well and I might even add that it looks a bit clearer in direct sunlight.

On paper though the 8T should be the far superior display rated at 1100 nits with the Pixel 5 rated at a max of 700 nits. Now, let's look at the performance with these two phones. This is another layer to what I was saying before with the different priorities with this phone. The Oneplus 8T has a near top of the line 865 Processor which easily eats up any game you throw at it, from graphically intensive games to overall OS tasks like swiping through feeds and in the browser. The Pixel 5 has a comparably slower processor with the 765G.

However, you might think that the Pixel would be slower in this regard. But it really isn’t unless you want to run it in a bunch of benchmarks. In normal daily tasks the Pixel 5 handles itself without a hitch or slow down in this regard and much to my surprise it handles graphically intensive games in max settings without a single stutter as well. If you were concerned about the processor not being as capable, don't be because you literally will not notice it. This leads us to battery life.

Both of these phones are battery life powerhouses. With the Oneplus 8T, being a bigger phone, it has a 4500 mah battery which does wonders in the battery life department. The Pixel 5 has a smaller 4080 mah battery but it has a smaller screen and a less power hungry processor resulting in spectacular battery life. Both phones last you a whole day easily but the Pixel 5 edges out the 8T in the battery life department due to the more efficient processor, google even downclocks them a little bit comparing the performance to other phones using the same chip in the name of better battery life and it definitely shows in this department. You can't go wrong with any of these devices, both will last you a long while while doing intensive and normal daily tasks.

However, if you want the best battery life in a phone I would go with the Pixel 5 though. Sound on both of these devices is great. Both get to pretty high volumes and get to these volumes without noticeable distortion. They both have stereo speakers using the front facing earpiece even though they dont sound as loud as the main rear one. Here is a comparison.

Now let’s look at the intangibles that each of these phones have. The OnePlus 8T has 65 Watt charging which charges this thing from 0-100 in a mind blowing 39 minutes. The Pixel 5 though, only charges via 20 watts and doesnt charge quite as fast but it does include wireless charging AND Reverse wireless charging which is quite useful for charging another Qi compatible phone or any wireless earbuds that you might have lying around. With the OnePLus 8t you get 2 years of guaranteed major Android updates and with the Pixel 5 you get 3. As I was saying earlier in the video, both of these phones are amazing in their own right but they both have very different priorities in their budget while making these phones.

The OnePlus 8T has a superior, bigger display with superb battery life and the latest 865 processor plus 120 hz. You also get that 65 Watt fast charging that is just insane. The Pixel 5 though has the best camera in the space and while not having the top of the line processor makes this up by having the best battery life in any phone I’ve used. The soft touch back provides a ton of grip and feels overall very good in the hand and you get wireless charging and reverse wireless charging which are great quality of life additions if youre into the wireless charging lifestyle. Honestly both phones are so good in their own right, even I struggle when choosing between the two due to their different priorities.

I prefer the bigger screen but can’t leave that pixel camera behind. It all comes down to personal preference and what you want in a phone.
