Blackberry KEYOne 48 Hour Impressions (Outline in Description)

Lots of YouTube Jeff back again from dope tech daily comm today, I'm bring you guys my impressions of the BlackBerry key one after having a couple of days with it more precisely: I've had about 36 hours now, I did get my device a little later than some other YouTube reviewers. So this is not going to be a full review, I'm going to go ahead and wait 10 to 14 days, I'm, not going to put a full review on a phone in 24 hours. So I'll give you guys my impressions after having it for day and a half and I do have quite a few interesting things to say so. I hope you still find it to be an enjoyable video, if you guys have any questions drop them below now. If you guys are new to my channel I, do keep a running Google. Keep document of all of my thoughts.

I will link this below as a Google Drive. If you want to take a look at my written thoughts, there's quite a few things in here in case there's something I, miss that I didn't say verbally in the video you can check it. The first thing I want to talk about the build quality on the blackberry key one I mentioned this in my unboxing. This is a very premium device here. Overall, you've got this nice matte back.

You can see. It does collect a little of grease from your fingers, not fingerprints, but you will see a little of difference there. Just in case that bothers. You don't bother me really at all. It's very well-made the metal on the outside the construction, just very, very easy to use the phone.

It's got curved bottoms here, so the very bottom pieces are curved, so it contours very nicely when you're typing on the keyboard, I honestly feel this thing is built like a tank, which is what I said in my written notes. If you drop this, or you bang it around, this thing is going to take a lot of wear and tear over time and also feels like a premium smartphone device that you'll be able to use for years to come. The buttons feel very responsive, both the volume and the power rocker the convenience key. All those feel excellent. The keyboard which I'll talk about the features of it later in the video, but the keyboard is fantastic, has a lot of clicks, Enos a lot of travel, exactly what you would like.

If you are a blackberry user, you can use this keyboard superfast, I love using the keyboard, even though I am so used to swiping on a touchscreen. I still found it very easy to get adjusted. Anybody coming from a traditional blackberry device be very happy. One thing: I will mention the build quality. This is a pre-production unit, so not a huge issue.

It's probably hard to see in the video, but my V and my B key at the bottom are a little less backlit than the other keys, so perhaps not quite fully even backlighting. But again it's a pre-production unit. This thing is not going to release for a few more weeks here in the US, so I'm not too concerned about that, but just something that I noticed in the last couple of days. That's the build quality. The next thing that I want to talk about is the battery life.

Now again, I've only had it for 36 hours. I'll show you guys screenshots. That I took really quick of the battery life, and I'll post these below. If you want to take a look at them, the screenshots probably don't reveal too much. This is when I did the first charge cycle for hours and 17 minutes screen on time, as you guys can see right there at the top had 9 percent remaining so about four and a half hours screen on time to project that out now I did let it sit overnight on standby, and also this was my first charge cycle.

So I ran a lot of benchmarks playing some games using the camera super heavily getting all of my apps onto the phone setting everything up so obviously, I was running it a little. Heavier than normal, obviously, it also needs some time to settle in, so I wouldn't say this is indicative of the battery life you're going to get I've heard from people who've used it for multiple cycles. You get about 6 to 7 hours, that's probably about right, because that's what I was getting on the Moto G 5 plus, which also has the Snapdragon 625 inside I'll, talk a little about those comparisons. Later the charging is quite quick. I went from the 9 percent back up to 100 in just over an hour and a half, so not too bad with the quick charge 3.0 it does have that big 3505 William hour battery. So you got to keep that in mind when you are trying to charge it.

The next thing is the software. So there's quite a few things. I want to talk about with the software. First, you've got everything that you would expect if you're a traditional BlackBerry user, all the BlackBerry apps here you've got BBM. You've got your productivity hub.

You've got everything that you would expect a Deter oft where password manager there's a lot of stuff for the BlackBerry loyalists in here. Furthermore, you can go over to shortcuts as well and add all kinds of great shortcuts for work. Anything from communications calendar contacts- phones- these are all things that you can add to the home screen, just like you would any other traditional icon, in addition to doing things like direct message driving mode. Various other features that you might want to use in the phone. The productivity tab, which is slides out right here from the side, is the one thing that I do want to mention.

This is very you're, going to use it for work. You've got your calendar here for today and tomorrow. You've got any sort of unread messages here, your tasks that you might need to complete upcoming or right now the contacts here which you guys can see and settings right here as well. Now the settings allow you to adjust the placement position, transparency and height of the tab itself. So if you don't want to have this thing so far close to the top, you want it further down.

You can adjust these lighting bars. If you want it to be completely transparent. You can slide this over and get complete transparency. You can also go into the permissions, and you can see what sort of permissions the productivity tab has access to I gave it access to pretty much everything calendar contacts phone SMS, which makes it the most useful overall. So if you're, a blackberry user you're going to find all those familiar blackberry, apps that you really like and if you're an Android user there's also quite a few things for the Android user as well, you'll notice a couple of great features in the BlackBerry launcher.

One of those is that you can add custom eye contacts. You guys have probably noticed throughout this video I am running a course of custom eye contact there. Visit's Taurus I also installed Prose. Those are both free on the Play Store I think for the next day, if you want to grab them very good eye contacts. In my opinion, I love, custom eye contacts and I love the ability to implement that in the stock launcher.

You also have the option, of course, to add widgets change your wallpaper, but if you go into settings, there's a few other cool things here as well. The first thing is, you can access your keyboard shortcuts there as well right from the settings menu pop-up widgets, which allows you to swipe up on an app and get a pop-up which you can choose whether you want to have a prompt whenever you turn off an app that's kind of something that I like to have off because I'm more of an experienced user, and you can also change the theme. This is another really cool thing which one-plus incorporated into the oxygen OS. You can change between a light and a dark theme. You see it makes the actual home launcher settings to be dark, and it also makes your home button, which you guys can see right there dark and also when you go into the app droids dark now.

One thing: that's a little annoying about that to me is that it doesn't actually make the settings on the phone dark. So if you go into the main settings, they are not part of the dark mode, not really sure why that is, it could just be a software bug or an oversight. I don't know, but we'll see. Maybe a future software update well theme that out I think would be nice to have. The dark theme persists throughout the entire operating system, but otherwise very smooth software.

Basically blackberry did a great job of incorporating their own services on top of a very close to stock field of Android 7.1.1 and I, like the software. Quite a bit, they've done some nice customization here to make it useful for BlackBerry users as well as Android users. So again, I have a lot of nice comments there. If you guys want to check those out keyboard features. So there's a lot of stuff in the keyboard features to talk about the first thing is, you can obviously do shortcuts.

So if you want to get to your browser, I've set it to long press opens up. Chrome. You can also set on your keyboard lots of other options from within settings. So let's go into the settings, and I'll show you guys just a few of them. There's way too many on this phone to mention.

This is one of the key features. Obviously you can go into the current keyboard change. Your virtual keyboard, if you want the physical keyboard, though, is where a lot of people are going to be interested. The physical keyboard gestures again I mentioned before you're able to scroll through things using your keyboard, so you can actually use your keyboard as a scrolling pad, for instance, on Twitter. You guys can see here.

I can scroll right through my Twitter feed, which is a really nice feature to have as well a lot of the other advanced settings that are within your keyboard. If you go here to the top, you've got your personal dictionary. You can add things to that blackberry spell checker, which is very good in my experience and if you go into keyboard settings here, go to the BlackBerry keyboard, there's even more that you can play around with you've. Got prediction and correction. Add to your personal dictionary.

Word: substitution, restricted words, everything that you expect from the great BlackBerry keyboard, which we saw on the Drive key press feedback. You can go through and check, vibration, duration, etc. This of course being for key pop up, sound, etc. If you're using the virtual keyboard, the statistics. This shows you all the words you've typed the words it's learned in the prediction and correction really nice feature if you're a nerd like me, and you want to check out the stats and if you're, using the virtual keyboard, you can go to type by swiping, use that as well also in advanced there's a lot of other stuff dictation, the language key space bar to switch language.

You can change your currency if you're, not from the US. You want to use British pounds or something like that, and you can also choose to have a control key which allow you to do copy and pasting control-c control-v I change that to the right shift key. So, overall, that's a nice feature to have as well. So a lot of things to say about the keyboard. There's a lot of cool stuff.

You can do with it, use it as a scrolled use it as a hotkey sort of mapping all these sorts of shortcuts. If you get used to it, it's going to be very fast and efficient, and I think blackberry users are going to be really impressed with the travel. The clicking this of the keys the size, it's very familiar if you're coming from a traditional BlackBerry device. The next thing is the performance of the Snapdragon 625 I'll. Keep this short.

It's very close to the Moto G 5 plus everyday tasks are very snappy. The animations going from home to the app drawer are a little long, but obviously you can turn that down and developer option. So that's not really a big deal. I had no problems navigating from task to task when it was basic stuff like email messages, hangouts, etc. The browser I did have some problems in the very beginning when I was navigating between big apps such as games, benchmarking and camera, etc.

That's to be expected, though, with the 625. It's not a huge deal playing games on this device isn't bad. It really depends on the game itself if you're playing something like Super Mario run, I had absolutely no problem with that. I also played a couple other games like one more line things like vainglory or more intense games. They are going to be a little slower to load.

You may have a few drop frames. They're still, playable I played a lot of vainglory on the Moto G 5 plus, and found that it's really not the same experience you get with a flagship phone, but I, don't think that's too unexpected and not really an issue. The main key is the 625 is so battery efficient when you're doing day-to-day activities, but that's what we should really probably be worried about with this phone and I think that there, it really excels with the actual fluidity of the phone I will run some benchmarks and post them a little further in my full review again just had a little of time to play with it so far, so those are some preliminary thoughts, and you can read the rest of them in the link below at the full written review, a camera. Now a lot of things to say about the camera. Here, the camera quality on this phone has been pretty impressive.

So far in good lighting, I'll go through and show you guys a few of the photos that I took on the blackberry key one. So let's go to the camera. Some of these are blurry shots, but some of them are very good. This is one I took inside earlier at dinner, a very good detail on the shot inside. It's a little soft around the edges, but not too bad I think the color is quite good.

I took some comparison, shots the pixel, the Galaxy S8 I will do a full comparison later. Don't want to talk too much about it here to make the video super long. Another shot of the Galaxy S8 VRS design, good detail on the inside there. This shot I took in the garage of my car you'll notice. It's a little dark, especially aside from the car itself.

I will show a picture that I compare this to the pixel in a future video the pixel much brighter on the outside, so it does appear the HDR plus on the pixel, a little more impressive than the software processing on the BlackBerry key one. You know they have the same sensor. I took a couple of pictures using the camera mode that allows you to take a picture only once the object is in focus, it's kind of a nice mode. You can see it definitely captured. The detail in this particular photo made sure the object was in focus that is a nice mode to have, but it does slow down the overall process of taking a picture and the shutter speed.

You guys can see these macros do have good color good detail, all of these, mostly in bright lighting, so again, a great camera, in my opinion. So far, taking some preliminary photos, I'll link, some of these below the macros seemed quite good. The sensor is again the same as the pixel, so you're getting that good quality, but the software, quite not quite up to par with the pixel I, will compare again the full photos to the galaxy s, 18 pixels I would say the s8 and pixel in summary have better low-light performance, but this phone is very close if you're taking pictures in ideal lighting conditions a couple other things to talk about with the camera. If we go into the actual app itself, the camera app itself, you can, of course save things to your media card. If you want I want to talk about the SD card more in a minute.

There's a lot of great options in here to play around with the first thing to note is that you want to turn this on four by three to make sure you get the correct photos. That's right on the side. I think it's set to three by two, which is the actual display aspect ratio in the beginning and then in the settings. There's a lot of other cool stuff to play with you can change this to a manual mode which I particularly like you've, got face. Detection also, this is the feature I was talking about earlier focus before capture I turn that on when taking some macro shots just to test it out seemed to work pretty well.

Overall, you guys saw the pictures they came out. Quite clear, I haven't had much of a chance to play around the video. Yet it does have nice stabilization on the front-facing camp I'm going to try to do a car vlog in the future, so I got to show you guys some video features and then the manual mode on here is actually one of the better manual mode. I've seen one thing: I really like about the manual mode on here is you can be actually custom hues from each of the features and choose if you want to turn it to auto or manual over here on the side, so you can see each of the features you can choose to turn to auto or manual just by tapping that way, you can only refine the things that you want to control if you want to have most of the settings to manual control, some other settings yourself. It's definitely a nice feature overall, I.

Think I, like the camera interface. Quite a bit, I think it's pretty impressive. The number of options that you get the number of modes. It also has a wide-angle selfie mode, I didn't take too many selfies I did take one which I'll show you guys too I guess to show you. The lighting very good I mean I.

Had some lighting inside my house here, you can see how happy I was about taking a selfie, but I took these two pictures and the lighting was pretty good, so I will test the selfie cam a little more in the video and talk about that in my full review. The next thing is the fingerprint sensor, the fingerprint sensor very impressive. Overall, it's right here on the space bar I showed this off in my original video. You guys can see right there. The fingerprint sensor immediately unlocks the phone.

One thing you do have to get a little used to is that you only need to tap the fingerprint sensor in order to open up the phone. You don't need to press down if you do it'll still open, but there's really no reason. I kept trying to press down a little, perhaps back from my Galaxy S7 Galaxy S7 edge days very impressed with the scanner overall actually like having it on the front after having it on the back with the s8, the g6 and the pixel for so long. So definitely a nice feature from blackberry, speaker quality. Again it has that single bottom firing, speaker I, would say the quality is OK.

It's clearer than the Galaxy S8, not quite as loud I did a side-by-side comparison. The SI it's a little louder, but this one definitely has the better clarity if you're watching media anything that has a lot of speaking in it like a Podcast I, listen to quite a few podcasts, so I was doing that last night to test out the speaker the display. Now this is something I want to elaborate on a little for people out there who are interested media viewing. It does put some black bars on the top and the bottom when you're viewing your media. So if you want to open up a video, for instance like this one and watch it you guys, can see right here, you get bars at the top and bottom when watching this in landscape mode, so that might bother some people.

It's not a huge problem for me because again, this phone is not mainly designed to be media consumption device. It does get the job done, though, when needed. The picture is quite good overall and again, the sound, not bad at all in terms of the clarity when watching videos or listening to audio so overall, the screen in terms of the colors and the viewing angles, they're pretty good I would say the brightness is not quite as good as the LCD panel on the g6 I talked quite a bit about that in my g6. Full review. I still think that's one of the best impress CD panels in terms of brightness again, I use it in the Arizona Sun here, where it's very bright.

So I get a very good idea of what kind of brightness capabilities each phone has overall, but the display is quite good, 4.5 inches in the 3 by 2 aspect ratio. One thing that I really did want to mention is that again, if you're playing games at this aspect ratio, especially in landscape games like vainglory, that require that sort of landscape play, it can be a little weird. If you're playing things like Pok?mon Go, Super Mario run I was able to play those pretty comfortably in portrait orientation with no problem. Another thing to keep in mind is that someone mentioned a very important point that I do want to bring up. This display actually has more available screen real estate when you're using the keyboard to type, for instance, an email than the Galaxy S 8 or the pixel XL.

Now I did the calculations, and I'll drop those below in the comments in my Google Drive document again, but the calculations basically come out this way. I have the numbers, and I'll show you guys really quick what they look like. You have nine point, three: five inches squared area on the blackberry key one: a screen real estate: that's, if you don't have the little predictive text at the top when using the keyboard, you can turn that off and then on the pixel excel. You have 12 point nine, two inches squared now. The thing is when you use the pixel XL and you use the virtual keyboard by default, that takes up about 40% to 50% of the screen, so you're getting substantially more area when you're using the screen to do things like type out an email and that's really what this phone is designed for.

So even though people are saying this is a small screen at a four point: five inch diagonal, it's really not a small screen compared to the pixel XL or even the s eight or the G six, when you're doing productivity tasks, like writing, typing out a message. Alright, so very final thing here the odds and end I know a lot of people are going to be interested about this T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling does work. You guys can see right there at the very top might be a little difficult to see voice over Wi-Fi. That's what's next to the Wi-Fi indicator. If you go in here, of course, you can turn on the Wi-Fi calling options within settings.

So if you go up to the very top go to more Wi-Fi calling menu, Wi-Fi preferred I've made a couple. Wi-Fi calls works just fine, and then the last thing is the Samsung SD card. I inserted in here.256 gigabytes does work just fine. You can use this as portable or internal storage. So if you want to use adoptable storage on your blackberry, key one go ahead and do that I'm not going to do it with this particular card because I already used it as adoptable storage on another device.

I'll get a new card and throwing here, but I wanted to mention that all right guys, so I think that's everything. I will definitely have an outline below, and I'll put that in the title. Furthermore, I know this video got quite long. If you guys have any questions drop me, a comment below I'll be happy to respond. Find me at dope tech daily comm, please like and subscribe.
