Apple Watch Series 6 - Any good in the gym? REVIEW part 1

Hey guys, what's up my name's Eric, and I'm the techie agent, and today we're going to do a quick health and fitness review of the Apple Watch Series 6. Now this review is actually going to be broken up into three different parts. The first part is going to be looking at gym, based exercise, so strength, training, functional training, CrossFit style, stuff, boot, camp style exercises supersets those kinds of exercises that are kind of strength, training, oriented, and typically you do them in a gym. The second part of the review will be looking at cardio based exercise, so hiking running riding your bike, those kinds of things and then the third part of the review is going to be focused in on kind of catch-all for all the other things that I didn't hit on the cardio and strength training portions. So I've never done this format before where I break up a review into multiple parts. So stick with me.

This is a little of an experiment, but hope you guys enjoy this video. So the Apple Watch Series six actually does come with a little health, and fitness surprises this year, stuff that wasn't really covered that well actually in the keynote address by apple. So right now, you're looking at the series three four five and six in order, and you're going to see that the back of the devices, the hardware, the optical heart rate, sensors, all the other technology on the watch. There's definitely a progression here. We're definitely seeing something new from apple with the series.

Six that you can see here in the red- and I pardon me they're very, very dirty because I sweat all over them, so you're, seeing my sweat and grime. It is what it is now we're going to be talking about these differences in depth uh in the third part of my video. But what I do want to bring up is that the series 6 does have an all new optical heart rate sensor, which they didn't really highlight or cover that much actually in the keynote address, and so we're going to be testing that out specifically uh in this review to find out how accurate this new optical heart rate sensor is for exercise. The Apple Watch comes pre-loaded with lots of different workout profiles, so you just simply boot up the app you find the workout profile that you're trying to dial in you'll have different goals that you can set, so you have, for example, for strength, training and open goal. You'll have a calorie goal.

If you're hitting trying to hit a target number of calories and a time goal, if you're trying to work out for a specific amount of time. Once you start your workout you'll have the time how long you've been working out. You'll have your active calories. Your total calories burned, along with your active heart rate information you'll, also be able to have music controls built into the app, and then you can lock out your screen. You can end the workout or pause the workout, so my goal for all of my gym, based exercise, was to compare the new Apple Watch Series 6 in red versus the Apple Watch Series 5, which you saw in black, and my idea here was to go ahead and put each device through multiple different kinds of workouts and to do super sets to really get my heart rate, elevated, so not really having a lot of time or much time at all between sets in order to really get my heart rate up there to see how each device performed.

Now. I should mention that, up to this point, the Apple Watch Series 4 and the series 5 shared the same optical heart rate sensor on the wrist and both of those sensors were, in my opinion, the best optical heart rate sensors on the market for gym-based use. They were really, really fast and are really, really fast at acquiring your uh, accurate heart rate, uh very quickly after you've finished doing a set. So typically, an optical heart rate sensor might take 20 to 30 seconds to get your accurate heart rate information. The Apple Watch is able to do it, usually in 10 to 15 seconds or less.

That would be the series 4 in the series 5. You can go. Take a look at my previous reviews to confirm all of this information. But what I really wanted to see here for this specific review is if the new optical heart rate sensor on the series 6 was even faster than the previous generation series, 4 and series 5 from apple, and what I found was that it actually was even a little faster, which is shocking, because it was already a perfect optical heart rate sensor, and they've, somehow improved upon it. Where now, instead of waiting for about you know, maybe 10 seconds to get my active heart rate information after doing a set, it was showing up within three to five seconds.

So it's more than twice as fast now. So, for the last couple of years, the Apple Watch has been consistently good and consistently accurate in giving accurate heart rate information for gym based workouts, which I've loved. I don't have to use a chest strap like I used to a couple of years ago. I can get accurate heart rate information right from the wrist. Now, it's gotten even better, because within just a matter of a few seconds after a set, I'm getting accurate information right on my wrist without having to use a chest, strap it's surprisingly good! It's its just it's consistent! It's reliable! Furthermore, it's fast! I don't know what else to say.

It's really, really good! Well, I just got done with uh a very intense 45-minute workout, with both apple watches, the Apple Watch, series 5 and the series 6. And I have to say the Apple Watch Series.5 heart rate sensors in my opinion, was pretty much already. You know the most accurate optical heart rate sensor, at least for gym use, and I didn't really think that apple needed to improve upon it, because no other heart rate sensor on the market other than chest straps and maybe some armband sensors were competing, but the Apple Watch Series six somehow managed to uh improve upon the original design, so Apple has actually improved. In my opinion, the heart rate accuracy well, not necessarily the heart rate accuracy, but the heart rate acquisition. So what I mean is the time that it takes the heart rate sensor to get your heart rate after you've completed a set has diminished from say, 5 to 10 seconds down to two to five seconds, so Apple has managed to make it almost instantaneous um, almost as good as an uh.

A chest strap now, even though we're seeing an improvement on the Apple Watch Series, six in terms of heart rate acquisition time uh, it's not all positive. We are still stuck with the old school look and format of the app and in particular I hate the way that this app is looks for gym based use. So real quick on the left you're, seeing the Apple Watch Series 6 on the right you're, seeing the Apple Watch Series 5. Now don't pay attention to the calorie information. That's going to be off because I was using my wife's Apple Watch Series 5, and it was calibrated for her body size.

So that's going to throw off the calorie algorithm. But specifically, what I want to look at is the heart rate information you're, going to see here that pretty much the average heart rate was spot on the Apple Watch Series 6 was probably a little faster at acquiring heart rate information, and so that's why you see that it has 145 beats per minute compared to the Apple Watch Series 5, which had 144 beats per minute. Now I really wish apple would clean up their cluttered design, specifically these heart rate graphs, which look absolutely terrible. So I recommend spending the four or five dollars to buy the health fit application which will give you much cleaner. Looking graphs, you can export all the information automatically straight from your Apple Watch.

Uh health apps straight to this application, and it will give you a much cleaner, looking interface in addition to other interesting information such as heart rate zones, so the Apple Watch Series 6 is more than just a cool smartwatch. This is also a very capable fitness tracker, specifically for gym-based use. Now, you'll have to check out my other parts of this review that are coming soon, but in terms of gym-based use and exercise and accuracy, and all of that this is where it's at uh. You know. I really only think that the way that this could be improved is if it had the accuracy of a chest strap which, by the way, this does pair with Bluetooth chest straps.

So if you really want even greater heart rate accuracy, you can pair this with a Bluetooth chest strap like the polar h7, polar h10 or another brand. The biggest glaring negative, in my opinion, really is simply just the app, and so I'd recommend going pick up. The health fit app you'll be much happier that way. So those are my opinions you guys will have to. Let me know in the comments below, if you agree, disagree have something to add.

I welcome any comments, criticisms or conversations with you guys so make sure to leave a comment below like this video hit subscribe, hey guys, my name is Eric, and I'm the techie agent we'll catch you next time. You.
