Apple Watch Series 3 vs SE - Which Should You Buy in Late 2020?

Hey everyone, my name is Aaron, and this is dad point 0. Now, a couple of days ago, I reviewed the Apple Watch Series 3, and I was just trying to determine whether it was a good buy in late 2020, and I was trying to keep that review strictly on the Apple Watch Series 3 without comparing it to the other apple watches. But the thing is that there is a big elephant in the room, and that is the Apple Watch, set hat was released late 2020, and it retails for only 80 dollars more than the Apple Watch Series 3. , and I think a lot of people have the question which budget Apple Watch should I buy. Should I just go for the cheapest one, the series three, because it's still good in 2020, or should I pay the extra 80 and get the SE? So I'm going to try to answer that, but I also want to be unbiased and just give you straight differences in specs and features what's the same, what's different, but I also want to tell you my experience with each one of these watches and just give you kind of my real-life everyday usage experience with both of these, because sometimes specs and features can look great on paper, but in real life it doesn't make a huge difference and just for reference, the Apple Watch SC will have the band with the holes in it and the Apple Watch Series 3 has the solid band. So let's start with the designs on both of these and specifically the displays, because there is a pretty big difference here, because you have the Apple Watch Series 3 that has the same design as the very first Apple Watch, and then you have the Apple Watch SE, which has the newer design of the Apple Watch Series, 4, series, 5 and series 6.

This means that the Apple Watch SC will have a lot slimmer bezels than the series 3 and have 30 percent more screen space. Now, I'm not going to lie that having that 30 extra screen space is a big deal because you're using this with your finger, these are tiny little apps you're, trying to press and having them a little bigger and having the screen stretch out more to the sides really helps with accuracy and in my opinion, it just looks a little more modern. It looks a little more 20 20 with the slimmer bezels and a little bigger display. The Apple Watch. Se also has the LPO display, which means it can dynamically change the screen's refresh rate to improve battery life and both the SE and the series 3 have the OLED retina displays with a thousand nits of brightness.

Now for the casing, the Apple Watch, SE is slightly thinner than the Apple Watch Series. Three, it's point: seven millimeters thinner and it's just a little more rounded off a little more ergonomic design than the series 3 is. The series 3 feels a little more boxy. They also separated the speakers and the microphone on the SE, where they're on the same side on the series 3. They also redesigned the speakers for the Apple Watch, SE and apple claims that they are 50 louder than the series 3 and in my testing the SC definitely has the advantage in speaker quality.

Here you can definitely notice when you're talking to Siri, and she's, responding to you or if you take a phone call through the speaker, tell me a joke. I couldn't figure out why the baseball kept getting larger. Then it hit me tell me a joke. What do you call someone who can sew really fast Taylor Swift? Another very slight change is that the SC has haptic feedback on its digital crown, where the series 3 does not on the bottom. These both have an optical heart rate, but they are different optical heart rate, sensors and the series 3 has the aluminum wrap all the way around to butt up to the optical heart rate sensor, where the SE has a ceramic shiny back, so that covers the major design differences between these two.

So now, let's switch to performance these both rock dual-core processors. The series 3 has the s3 and the SE has the s5 and apple claims that the s5 chip will get two times faster performance than the s3. Now I'll, be honest, and I'll say that there are many times where I don't notice a speed difference at all between these two, when I'm shuffling through apps or looking at my notifications or just generally moving around the UI, I don't really notice a difference. Everything is smooth and fluid on both of these. Where I do notice, a difference is opening up apps and how fast it takes for them to load up.

It is definitely noticeably faster on the SE for apps to load up, and some apps, like a map, for instance, will load up much, much faster. The thing you have to consider here is that the s3 is now over three years old and how far apple will support this with software updates in the future is just unclear. So, if you're buying this Apple Watch- and you want it to last for three plus years- you have to really take that into account. The Apple Watch, SE also has Bluetooth 5.0, whereas the series 3 has Bluetooth 4.2 for health tracking we're really only looking at an optical heart rate for both of these, and even though the design of the optical heart rate is a little different on each one of these. I get about the same recordings on both of these I've taken these on runs.

I've taken these on walks and the heartbeats are within a couple beats each time. Both of these will track your activity and your sleep. However, they don't have the advanced features like the ECG sensor or the blood oxygen level sensor for safety features. These both have emergency SOS feature. However, only the SE has the international emergency calling feature, fall, detection and noise monitoring.

A few other features. The SE has the always-on altimeter, whereas a series 3 does have an altimeter, but it's not always on the SE also has a compass which can be very useful for hikers. However, the series 3 does not. You also get more storage on the SC. You get 32 gigabytes of storage.

Where, on the series 3, you get 8 gigabytes. So if you're downloading a ton of music to bring on your runs or your workouts, you might want to go with the SE. Both of these are water resistant up to 50 meters and both have the high and low heart rate notifications, along with the irregular heart rate rhythm notification. These are both quoted at 18 hours of battery life and, for the most part, I'm seeing roughly the same battery life between the two. If anything, I might have maybe five to seven percent more battery life on my SE, after a full day of usage, but overall I mean you're looking at a day and a half probably tops if you're using this moderately.

Another thing that needs to be considered is that, if you're buying this for a person that doesn't have an iPhone or for a child, you're going to want to buy the SE, and that's because the family setup for apple watches is only available on Apple Watch Series 4 or later, so it's not available on the series 3. , so that kind of covers the different features and the different specs of both of these. Now I just want to cover my experience with both of these and which one I would recommend- and I first want to say that I thought that this was going to be an easy no-brainer pick for the SE, but I'm actually really impressed with the longevity of the series 3 and how it's held up over the last three years, but it's still very hard to recommend this over the Apple Watch SC for a bunch of different reasons. For only eighty dollars more, you get a nicer bigger display. Thirty percent larger you get a little more modern design.

Overall, that's thinner! You also get louder speakers, you get more storage, and you get a faster processor, that's newer, so that means it'll be supported with software updates longer than the series three will and to me. Those features alone are well worth the 80 to upgrade to the SE. However, I do realize I don't speak for everyone. Some people just want to get their foot in the door, try out an Apple Watch for a little, and then they're fully prepared to upgrade in a year or two if they like it. So at that point the cheapest option, the Apple Watch Series 3- might be the best choice for them, but I think for the vast majority of the people out there, I would highly recommend spending that 80 extra dollars and getting the SE all right guys, I'm going to wrap this up.
