Apple iPhone SE 2020 Review : Should You Buy This?

Hey guys, what's up, this is Bharat you're watching I an now I've been testing the iPhone SE for almost two weeks with a sim card in it. A lot of people are really interested in this device, but they don't really trust the fact that it has a small display in this video. We're gonna talk about some pros and cons and also give you a full in-depth review of the iPhone SA with respect to our experience over the past couple of weeks. So, let's quickly get started now. It's 2020 and expectations from a revision of the iPhone SC were high and really out there. People expected a really modern design, with an edge to edge display and all the latest specifications, while apple may have delivered on most of those expectations they didn't deliver on the display or the design they did deliver on the specifications' aspect now right off the bat I'll tell you that this phone is not for everyone.

If you are somebody who's already using an iPhone, 10r or 10 or any other version beyond that, it may take you a while to sort of get used to this device, so we'll get into all of those details in a couple of minutes. Now, let's quickly talk about the price, because that is a pressing matter. Even though the phone has been launched for a price of more than a 40 000 rupees around 42 000 rupees, it is effectively available for 38 900. Now this is considerably more than the American price, which is a dollar 399 which roughly translates to about 30 000, rupees uh, give or take a few hundred now. The price that you see in the US is without taxes and the price that you see in India is with taxes.

So, if you remove approximately 18 tax from the 38 900, you get approximately 33 000 as the price of the phone before taxes, so it comes quite close to the price in the US. It's not as far as most people think so for that price uh. How good is this phone we'll get more into it? Now? Let's start off with build quality and design, because this is really important, even though at first glance, this phone appears to be one of the older phones with respect to design, with respect, to look and feel the shape is very familiar if you've used the previous generation iPhone, the shape is very familiar, but this is a much more compact phone. Also build quality is really, really impressive. The rear glass is also more uh, toughened with ionization process that they've used on the glass, and it feels really impressive in the hand, this phone feels really solid, really robust, and another thing about this is that it also feels like it's much slimmer and because I'm sort of used to the newer generation phones, which are considerably thicker uh.

This phone seems like a really compact and lightweight version of an iPhone. Now with respect to the front. This is a dated design. It looks like uh at least two to three years old, because it doesn't have a notch. It doesn't have an edge to edge display, it has a forehead and a chin uh.

The bottom part has a button on it. Apple said that touch ID will not be relevant anymore, because face ID makes more sense for the future, even though I agree with some aspect of it, where face ID is really useful when you're using an iPhone or the fact that they brought back touch ID uh sends confusing signals. If they wanted to use this display, they could have continued to use the display, but also give face ID on the iPhone SE, which apple hasn't done. So what they said about security for an iPhone is no longer available on the iPhone SE, even though you do have super secure touch ID. So these are things that sort of are confusing.

The display is still a fantastic display. It's a 625 nit display. It still falls into their retina bracket, so you still get 326 pixels per inch, which looks fantastic on this display. Even though it's not wrapped around the edges, you still get a lot of brightness accurate, colors, it's an impressive lcd, and it has excellent viewing angles as well. The biggest downside is that it's not a h2s display and the closest phone with respect to pricing to the iPhone SE is the iPhone 10r and the iPhone 10r does offer a much bigger display.

If you're somebody who's into content consumption, you would prefer the iPhone 10r. The display goes edge to edge. It has the same brightness, the same retina standard, and it also folds around. So it's called the liquid LCD or the liquid retina display on the iPhone 10r, whereas here is just called retina LCD with the iPhone 10r. You also lose out on the compact form factor that you get with the iPhone SE, so there are uh trade-ins when you choose one phone or the other.

The other advantage that the iPhone SE has with respect to build quality is that it still matches up with some other phones or that apple released in the past couple of years. So it does have ip67 water resistance. It is extremely durable. It's still missing the 3.5 mm headphone jack, and it also includes wireless charging, making this one of the cheapest iPhones that you can buy, which has wireless charging and making it also one of the cheapest phones that you can buy with wireless charging available in India today you do get 18 watt charging with the phone, but you do get only a 5 watt charger inside the box. So if you want to take advantage of that fast charging, you can use an 18 watt charger.

If you have one lying around, or you'll just have to buy an 18 watt charging you can plug in your iPhone into that, and it'll charge much faster. Now, let's talk about performance, which is what differentiates this phone from many of the other devices. This will include all your latest generation hardware, so you still get the a13 bionic chip, which you get in flagship phones like the iPhone 11 Pro and the 11 pro max. You still get that level of performance, but at almost half the price in some cases much lower than half the price, which is what makes this phone interesting. The trade-off is that you lose face ID you lose that impressive display, but you do get the performance that you're looking for.

So this one is impressive: with respect to the image processing with respect to day-to-day activities, if you want to jump between tasks multitasking, all of that is buttery smooth on the iPhone, because the a13 chip manages all of that without any issues. With respect to benchmarks, you will also see that uh, if you put it right next to the iPhone 10r, it scores much higher on both geek bench and an tutu, so the scores really show what this phone is capable of in terms of performance. Now, if you want to play games like PUBG, you can play them on the iPhone SE, and they work really well, but the display seems really crammed and compact. So if you're somebody who's, not a big gamer, you won't mind the display, because the display is really smooth. The UI is really smooth and overall activity and usage of the phone is really smooth, but the fact that it doesn't go edge to edge if you're somebody who's used a h2s display, and then you come to this you'll really miss the edge to edge display, which is what happens in my case as well.

A few things that also differentiate this with any other full edge to edge iPhone is the fact that the control center is now back at the bottom. So if you're somebody who's using an iPhone as a primary phone like an 11 and thinking of getting the iPhone SE as a secondary phone there's a massive difference with respect to functionality, so you use gestures to get your multitasking window. You use gestures to get your control center and notifications. In this case, you have to double tap to get the multitasking window, and then you have to press once on the button to bring up the home screen, whereas to pull up the control center. You have to swipe from the bottom and to pull the notification you have to swipe from the top.

So it's a complete bundle of mixes when it comes to gestures as well. I think they could have kept them continuous on this as well. You could have still had the right control center in the left notification and still the swipe up to go back to the home screen. Plus an additional home button would have been more useful. So if I was an iPhone 11 Pro user, I just wanted a secondary phone.

I could have picked up the iPhone SE, but I can't now because there is this big disparity in how I use the UI and the operating system on both these phones, and that makes it a little more cumbersome to use this as a secondary phone for a lot of people who are looking for their first phone or for a lot of people who are looking for their first iPhone. This is a fantastic device because it gives you all the features that you want from an iPhone, including airplay, including Apple Music, including uh, iCloud services. Uh, you get all of that on this device. You also get the kind of performance that you get from flagship phones for a fraction of the price, and you also get all their features, including ip67. You get wireless charging now the battery is also smaller, but because the screen is much smaller and the a13 chip is fantastic at battery management.

The phone will give you easily five to six hours of screen on time, which is what you expect from an iPhone apple, never discloses their battery information because they talk more about how much time you get on the phone and this more or less lives up to that expectation. If you're, a heavy user, you'll still get four to five hours of screen on time, and you'll charge your phone at the end of the day, if you are even heavier user you're gaming, all the time then you'll be charging your phone more frequently. Another thing that uh really impressed us was the cameras. Are you still get one of the primary sensors from the current generation of the iPhones? So you get perfect depth of field. You get perfect portrait shots.

You get all your portrait features front, facing portrait shots as well and, more importantly, 4k video at 60 frames per second making this one of the cheapest phones with 4k video at 60 frames per second and one of the best quality phones. As far as video recording is concerned, so it matches up with all its elder brothers. So if you're somebody who's looking for a phone that can capture perfect 4k video, the iPhone SE is the best starting phone to offer that another thing that's differentiating between this and the flagships is that now the flagships of the 11 11 pro 11 pro max can shoot 4k 60 video at the front-facing camera, whereas this can only shoot HD video at 30 frames per second. So, if you're looking for something that does shoot 4k video on the front-facing camera, the iPhone SE will not deliver that, but it does shoot 4k on the rear camera. It does shoot slo-mo on the rear camera as well.

So 1080p video at 240 frames per second buttery, smooth, slow motion. You can get it directly out of the box. You can get time-lapse. All your apple features, one of the best camera phones uh, some of the samples that we took really impressive out of the box of some of the greatest HDR that we saw on this even on the front facing camera that, because apple, is bringing their image science into this budget device. It gives you all the features that you can get from a flagship Apple device, including their image processing into this compact form factor.

Now it constantly seems like I'm over selling this iPhone SE, but the reality is that for an iPhone, this is one of the most impressive products and if you overlook the display, if it's something that you can overlook, this is a performance powerhouse. You get impressive, video quality, you get impressive performance, you still get ip67, and you get wireless charging, everything included and the five to six hours of battery life. But you don't have the display, you don't have face ID, and you don't have a front facing camera that is uh equivalent to the flagship. So that is the trade-off for getting a phone for around 38 000 rupees from apple uh you, you should pick a higher variant if you're going in for a 4k video and if that's your main purpose, but this is a fantastic entry level phone. This is a fantastic phone to gift to somebody who's getting into an iPhone.

This is also a fantastic phone to give to an elder person if you want to face time with them. This is one of the cheapest entrants to get into FaceTime with being a phone. So all of those things combined. This is a perfect proposition from apple. It is not meant to compete with flagships out there.

It is also not meant to compete with android phones like the OnePlus 8, because if you look at the OnePlus 8, it's targeted at a different demographic. This is more apples way of saying that enter into the Apple ecosystem. We want to get you hooked once you're hooked you'll probably want to upgrade it's a great way for uh elder people to own an iPhone. So if you want to gift one to your dad or your mom, so that they can face time with you, so that they can iMessage with you so that they can use iCloud with you or share Apple TV subscriptions or Apple Music subscriptions, this is a fantastic phone to have all of those things. Would I buy one personally for myself? I don't think I would.

I prefer the full screen edge to edge versions, knowing that an iPhone 11 Pro exists. Furthermore, I would always pick the iPhone 11 Pro over the iPhone SE, but if I was looking for a budget phone- and I wasn't already using an 11 or a h2 edge display iPhone, this would be a fantastic phone, especially on the iOS side of things.
