2.8 Pound Gaming Laptop: Huawei MateBook 13! Earbuds Under $100, USB Aromatherapy, SIM Card Hacks

While wise mate book 13 reviewed sims, swapping safety. Why is VPN so slow on my router soul, bird earbuds oil diffusion for a better night's sleep and more all, coming up on tech thing, Thank You patrons without your support by patreon. com, slash tech thing we couldn't make the show for you each and every week join the crew that makes tech thing possible at patreon. com, slash tech thing, Thank You, patrons I'm, Shannon I've had a Norton, and this is tech thing where we have something useful in every single show. This episode was pre-recorded, it's true actually you're. Actually, you are literally physically like halfway around the world right now.

What are you doing? New Zealand well, hopefully I'm at the Green Dragon in the Shire having a delicious beer, but I won't be because I'm going to be on the South Island touring across the country. I'm doing a road trip, so I'm very excited about it. That sounds amazing. I am so stoked. Yes, I'm going down for Linux conference Australia, which would have happened by the time.

This episode releases, so I'm spending the extra week just doing road trip and taking photos. Are you attending the conference? Are you on a panel? Are you lecturing me noting check you out? Do you have a subject? I do? Do you want to know it? Yes, personal branding for people that are security, aware good dinner, yeah because! You have to spend so much time online I figured I should give a little of my expertise that I've learned about privacy and security, even though I seem very transparent on the internet, perhaps more opaque than you realize. Hey everybody Patrick here you may notice a slightly different shirt, but we wanted to get this review in as close to the release date as possible, mostly because I love watching less known, brands, challenge the leaders and will always new mate book 13, definitely gunning for Dells, XPS, 13 and Apple's MacBook Air and oddly enough razors blades stealth. Does it beat out the leaders we went hands-on and left with kind of mixed feelings, a lot of good feelings, but if you're, a gamer that wants to carry a sub 3 pound laptop the mate book, 13 will definitely be on your shortlist because it is a really short list. Like two laptops now, there aren't a ton of options in the mate book 13 line up either the model we tested in the 8th, gen core i7 285 65.

You made it with an NVIDIA GeForce, mx1 50 GPU, that's the full TDP or the full 25 watt TDP version of the MX 150. Thankfully, here's the 10 watt version not so good. They also have a Core i5 80 to 65 you versions that does not have those discrete Nvidia graphics. The make book looks good enough, well always quite proud of the sandblasted enclosure, and it's like 5252 aluminum, diamond-cut camphor, edges bullet. They love those diamond-cut camphor edges, but the touch screen monitor really the first thing: I noticed 2160 by 1440, which means a narrower and taller 3 by 2 aspect ratio kind of like the surface books.

If you want to read longer before scrolling a window or see more rows on your spreadsheet, it's a solid configuration that I really enjoyed using productivity, apps like Docs or sheets email. The bezels on this are thin. The keyboard runs nearly the width of the unit and yes, the megapixel webcam is mounted above the screen, so you're not dealing with nostril cam. Now the panel is specter 300 nits typical brightness, but it seemed dimmer than other 300 and inspect laptops have used outside or in a room with brightly lit windows. I had some trouble, especially with screen reflections on darker videos.

A brighter screen or ditch in the shiny screen for a matte finish would definitely help. Bands got lab when we ran handbrake performance was pretty much. What we expected from a core, i7, solid and frankly, I will take fans over weak performance from an inferior cooling system any day of the week. While we kept the port's minimal, there's no SD card slot, just a pair of USB seaports and a headphone jack the USB config, not my favorite USB see charging is fast enough. Transfer speeds are fine, even though there's no Thunderbolt 3, but the left port handles data transfer and charging, while the right port does data and DisplayPort, which means you can't charge the mate book off of a monitor right.

You can't use a single USB, cable for charging and video. That might also mean multiple cables in a docking situation. Wireless connectivity with solid 802, 11 ABG and an AC. It's like a 2.2 or a 2x2 MIMO configuration that's pretty typical for an Ultrabook Bluetooth, 5.0, always nice to see the webcam by the way does not have IR. So you can't log in with your face, but the one power button is also a fingerprint reader and made logging into Windows a Retouch kind of deal.

The keyboard is solid, really solid, actually good tactile feel good key travel, especially for a relatively thin laptop, but the trackpad. Well, it kind of felt and plastic the speakers fire up from the bottom of the laptop now there are rubber feet under there. They give the laptop some space for the audio to percolate out somewhere other than through the keyboard, but we've heard better audio from designs with the front-facing or top firing speakers those feet by the way they make the meat book.13 look thicker than it actually is, but they also raise the laptop off your desk, which I suspect helps a bit with cooling battery life could use some help. I thought it might be. The 25 watt, NVIDIA GPU, but Huawei specs suggest that would only drop 1080p, video playback from 10 hours to 9.6 hours by the way running.3D video games going to drain your battery a lot faster than say playing Netflix. That said, mixed general use with Wi-Fi and browsing battery life looks more like seven hours, maybe eight hours max compared to the 9.6 hours they spec I might be an aggressive user, but the 41 watt hour battery is not huge, even for a 13.3-inch laptop speaking of aggressive power users, the NVMe drive in memory soldered on to the main board now soldered, memories typical, but you have 512 gigabytes of storage and 8 gigabytes of memory max that wasn't an issue for gaming. But if somebody that moves a lot of large video files around larger SSD drive options or the ability to pop in a larger NVMe Drive would be extremely welcome.

The MX 150 is roughly equivalent to a GTX 1030 performance-wise, that's not huge, but for a laptop this small, it's a big deal, I had no trouble getting. My rocket League on fortnight will definitely hit playable frame lats, but you got to turn the settings down to medium. Remember: you're, not playing either of those with the Intel 620 graphics, that most 13-inch laptops use and that 21 by 60 by 1440-inch screen packs 50% more pixels than your basic 1080p panel. That's a fair number of pixels for an MX 150 to pump out don't expect to play more demanding 3d games without turning the settings all the way down to low hey. Then I mentioned how much I enjoy any gaming on the laptop.

This small I have to say: I love. The idea of a 2.86 pound laptop I can run my basic games on while I travel. The Nvidia graphics should help a bit with things like Oh premiere, the 3 by 2 aspect ratio works really hard for productivity, apps and accepting the mediocre brightness. This green looked excellent. The trackpad could use work and I want every laptop to have an SD card slot.

Looking at you think that, because video and photography and puttering the grasped by operating systems, well I use SD cards a lot. The real problem for me is the separate ports for USB charging and DisplayPort video output, or at least I, think it'll be a bigger issue for more folks moving forward now having 8 gigs of ram the $999 core i5 model, definitely a good start, but the ability to upgrade that 512 gigabyte, NVMe SSD, along with 16 gigabyte or 32 gigabytes, would make the make book 13 much more attractive to power users. In the meantime, this core i7 config, the NVIDIA MX 150 graphics, definitely makes this. The smallest laptop I'd consider getting my game on with, and it's much more attractive than a big honking gaming laptop now is that worth 1,300 ?, you put it side-by-side with a $1600 razor blade stealth, and you might think so size wise. The two are practically the same, just under three pounds.

The stealth is maybe a half inch wider than the 8.3 one. By eleven point. Two: six by 0.5 nine-inch MacBook performance-wise, though the stealth is going to give you more memory, higher double the memory, in fact higher frame rates because it only has a 1080p screen. It's got upgradable storage and a significantly larger battery either way. Gamers looking for an Ultrabook have some solid options right now: mate book, 13 or the razor's latest stealth.

If you're a gamer looking for an Ultrabook, you got some solid options: we'd love to hear what you think. What are you looking for on your next notebook is priced the biggest thing or you are curious about gaming. Is it all about the performance? Email us asked, EdTech thing, calm, I, gotta, say: I always get a little nervous when a headphone company starts making in-ear headphones, earbuds expertise in large, dynamic or playing our magnetic drivers doesn't always translate into making awesome earbuds, but I've loved a lot of Barnett AMX gear. Over the years the GT 770 Pro Studio Headphones. Still one of my all-time favorites.

There update to the DT 770, the DT 1770, really impressed me and the lagoon ANC sealed over ear headphones I heard at CES. They were fantastic now meet the soul, bird, a tiny low profile. They call it an extra flat design that practically can't be seen in your ear sells for 99 bucks on amazon. com there's a built-in mic free button control and five sizes of silicon ear tips. In the case, I found the pair tips that worked for my ears by the way buyer says any comply.400 series tips will work. So if you prefer foam tips, or you have what I will call difficult year, canal's that's a great option, especially if you have rather large ears like mine, so I fired up some of my favorite test tracks.

These sounded the sole birds were balanced, a bit of tilt or emphasis towards base over treble the kick drum. Oh, my beloved clutches mice and gods felt right, but the treble words like sibilant came to mind tizzy. If the volume was up high, a little fuzzy or a little grainy her, then I particularly enjoy as in lots of arts instead of well. The symbols were more bacon than symbol, which is a bummer, because voices like neck okay, sore Lou Reed sounded fantastic I love. The wheat profile on these, but if I'm looking at the under 100 but awesome audio price range, one more is triple driver- is an excellent option.74 bucks, maybe as little as 69 bucks on Amazon a little extra treble on these, but it's clean and cymbals will sound excellent. Now, if you want killer bass and spotless highs, and you don't care about having a mic periodic audios MG aka, the magnesium is about as much bass, drum thud as you'll get from any errs, not over-the-top, but very, very good, very, very solid I, still love by our dynamics over ears, but I'm, holding off on recommending the sole bird right now because.

Slash tech thing got an email from Ron. He says: hi tech team I recently listened to an episode of the reply-all podcast about people that can take over other people's mobile phone accounts, with the intention of accessing user login sites, data, etc. When the host of the show was preparing for retribution from the subjects of an episode he'd previously done, he did things to avoid his life being turned upside down. One thing was to port his old cell number to Google Voice and then get a new number for his phone that he wouldn't use or share with anyone, the idea being that it's to steal someone's phone. If the number isn't known to the attackers, do you have any experience with this? How does one actually use their old number via their mobile phone? Once they ported it to Google Voice, how does texting and calling work, so you're, not calling people with your new number that you intend to keep private.

Would you have any insights as to how to protect oneself from this type of threat? Thanks, Ron, I love, this question who opposes me some security questions? Well, it's terrify the idea of somebody getting access to your phone number, and we've I. Don't think it's happened to any of its having that have we've known people indirectly, I think that have had numbers stolen. It's awful yeah, it's horrible! It basically feels like somebody's taking your life away, because you so much of your life is stored on a phone numbers were never meant to be a part of your identity. They were just meant to be a part of communication right. It's, and they've become a part of identity in the fact that you are now sent, pin codes and things like that, which is the worst 2fa ever don't get me started.

So SIM cards can be swapped legitimately by a customer if the sim has been damaged or if you are changing to a new size of a SIM card, with a new phone, etc. , etc. But that also means attackers can use it too. So attackers can tie a sim card, a mobile phone to an existing customer number by tricking mobile phone service representatives into doing the same thing. So usually this is a secondary line of attack after they.

The attackers do some kind of reconnaissance, so an attacker would need to know some information on a target first before they can initiate that attack, so they would have to know the phone number. Basically, you know it's so good that information security for corporations and shopping in the United States is so tight, and it's not like 30 or 50 million phone numbers addresses, Social, Security numbers and other assorted data had been leaked out on the Internet to be permanently accessible by people who want to do nefarious. Oh wait, it has already happened pretty much, not to mention it's so easy to find people's phone numbers on websites like yeah. Well, I won't even name them because I don't like white page listings online public records do not exist. So the reason why this is scary, no there are reasons you were saying legitimate reasons, but I don't like public.

It's a doll as somebody that works on YouTube. So the reason why this is scary is that lots of banks and mobile phone carriers and online services all use those one-time codes sent via SMS or a phone call to verify your that you actually hold that number and usually, if it's a phone call, they just tell you the pin code via the microphone and that's it. So, since much of sim swapping has to do with social engineering mobile phone carrier representatives, a common idea is to number one create a new phone number with an app like Google Voice, which you mentioned in your email run, which can be accessed via the Google Voice application on your desktop or in the mobile app, and you can find more information about Google Voice over at Voice google. com, so voice lets. You choose a phone number tied to your Google account that can forward messages and calls over to your actual mobile number.

So it's heck useful. But if you use Google Phi you will need a separate Google account for voice and even then forwarding to your Google find number does not actually work, but it works with all other carriers. So if you have T-Mobile instead, you can use Google Voice with it. In fact, Google Voice has an entire write-up over on their website about how Google Voice does not work with Google Phi I. Remember when I first started up my Google fire count, I had to port my voice number over to Phi, and then I lost that Google Voice app account that I had set up with that same phone number.

That's a Google moment. That is a total Google moment. I was just like really I can't use them together, anymore, I have to port it over to Phi and then erase my Google Voice account. So that's cool. So the problem is you don't want to forward those voice texts, the Google Voice texts to your actual number, because if someone does a sim swap on your actual number, they would also receive those forwarded messages.

So what I would recommend is setting up your Google Voice account and then, once you have replaced your original phone number on say all of your online identities, because you know they ask for your phone numbers right with just replace it with the new voice number remove your mobile number from your voice account forwarding so that it can only be managed through the voice app. So that way everything is kind of cut off. There is no merging of the two numbers whatsoever, and then what you will want to do is set up. Two-Factor authentication on your Google account the one that's set up with voice. If you have not already and of course it is always best to use a physical key like a YubiKey instead of getting SMS, two-factor authentication or app authentication, two-factor authentication codes, if that made sense.

So that way, you have a physical key as opposed to everything being locked down to your phone or your phone number very, very important, and unlike your phone, you can probably actually well. You can have multiple you bikes tied to an account. So if you lose your keys with the YubiKey or your bag gets stolen, or your house gets broken into, you can have a UV key secret it somewhere else. That will do the same thing as the first. You have a key which you can't really do.

If someone beats your prints, another thing that you can do if you are still locked down with a mobile phone carrier is, you could also set a secret pass phrase with your mobile phone carrier that has to be repeated before they can help you in the customer service calls. So this is usually a PIN code or a secret answer to a question like they could ask you. What is your second pet after you got married, and then you answer something, and then they're like okay, you're good like, and then you can say your stuff, but if obviously you would want it to be something that people can't find out about. You on, like Facebook, also remove your number from any applications that already allow you to use app based or Hardware token based two-factor authentication use that app based or Hardware token one instead of the SMS based one I know I've repeated myself before, but you know that's very important use the role of basically, if you don't or if they don't need it, don't give it to them. If a website does not need your phone number, and they don't need your voice number just don't give it to them, because why would you're just giving more information to them for free? They don't need it unless it's required for you to set up an account or like Instagram, it's required on an Instagram account, otherwise just don't set it up and lastly, make sure that you are backing up everything if you lose your Google account password for the account.

That's tied to Google Voice and you have not set up two-factor, authentication and printed a copy of your backup codes. Then you will get locked out the suck make sure that you print out those backup codes so that you have that backup, set and ready to go and make sure to have backups in the event that you do get locked out. So you can always get back in when my phone spent the weekend with the TSA. The way I was able to get back into my Google accounts. Are you know, I couldn't use Google off you get the wrong phone right, because I had backup actually sort of good yeah.

So, obviously it's not wise to like to take a picture of your backup codes. Because then, if your phone gets stolen, you don't have those backup codes so like keep them in the safe or some kind of physical form. That would be much harder for people to steal, literally follow in Gandalf's footsteps and I know. I, say this because I'm going to New, Zealand and I have Lord of the Rings on my mind, but he told Frodo. He told Frodo keep it secret, keep it safe, and I have to agree with them.

You need to keep it secret. Keep it safe. Keep your phone number secret, keep your phone numbers safe. The fewer people know your phone number, the less likely you are to have somebody steal it, and that is the big takeaway of this. The end email ask a tech thing.

Comm or you can tweet me I'm at snubs I realized that I am on the other side of the globe right now, but I still have access to the Internet. So I can answer your question. It's a global network, basic Google Phi is a global international network, so I am totally using that right. Now, as we speak, so you can tweet me any of your questions about security and privacy. That's my thing: I love talking about it in honor of Shannon's, impending departure to New, Zealand I feel like I'm, the announcer and up let's say, Chi wars.

Question I always said because I am NOT. An u. s. resident I recently tried out a VPN service installed directly on my sous RAC 6 6u router, immediately I lost about 80 percent of my download speed. I tried various tweaks suggested by the VPN support service, but nothing seemed to have a permanent impact.

My speed always ended up dropping back to almost unusable levels. The VPN provider eventually told me that it was the router I was using. This particular router simply could not handle higher speeds when directly connected to a VPN have the same problem with different VPN services. Is this true is my router to blame? If so, is there a better router that I can get that will give me decent download speeds when the VPN is loaded directly on the router, thanks for your help from Ivan in New Zealand? Thank you for the question. Tl DR, most consumer routers do not have the CPU horsepower to encrypt all the internet coming in and out of your house, especially if it's a fast connection, and you have lots of things running, which is why your download speed drops like a stone when you turn on the VPN.

Now, if it's initially really, really quick, then it drops off. It could also be that you don't have enough cooling on your router, and you could try, like you, know, opening it up or putting a fan on it or something. You know the freezer tricks when they work and when they don't, they're expensive. But it's its. It's frustrating right, because there are so many routers that are like supports VPN.

You can't connect to VPN the new connect to VPN, then, as soon as you do something other than like email. You know it falls flat on its face. This is the international sign for your router falling flat space I've heard a number of routers do have enough processing power, for example the Links wrt54g knowledge ease, router, the RT 2600 AC is fairly powerful and then, by the way, I have to say they do a perfect job of updating and keeping it's now just their operating system as their pride and joy, and they keep it updated yeah. There are several other models out there. This is by no means an exhaustive list, something else you might look for routers with AES, ? and I, and until data protection technology with AES and I and secure key.

Essentially it's the new instructions and what they do is they allow they to make the encryption more efficient. That's just how I'll sort the explanation on that that's cool the Aces are TAC 86, you that should work. Fine I, don't usually be noted on the Box. You know it's something you want to look for. You know just because the Box says it does.

VPN doesn't mean to do a usable VPN, but how? If it has a YES NI, you should be good to go. This is by no means, like I, said before an exhaustive list. I have not seen very much in the way of round ups or even regular reviews, testing, VPN speeds, I've got a couple of these routers I can play around with I want to talk about this more when I get a better handle, especially on Open VPN versus not Open VPN performance, because I have heard from several sources that Open VPN is particularly difficult for inexpensive routers to deal with. Yeah, I also should mention that I run without a VPN on the router at home in part, because services like Netflix or until recently my bank would block my access if I was on a VPN. It's the same reason: I, don't yeah.

Generally speaking, I'd prefer to run the VPN on my desktop or laptops I, find it less irritating that way. It's AI mean at one point: I had kind of a list of everything that went No yeah when I was on a VPN, and it was a long enough list that I would not want it on my router. Your mileage may completely vary and mean, for example, most of the time I think we're both running private Internet access. Yes and there's a couple other options out there, but yeah your VPN provider is probably telling you the absolute truth, most consumer routers. They cannot handle VPN encryption once the bandwidth gets of any measurable or reasonable amount good to know yeah all right.

Well, something that does not irritate me is aromatherapy. I know, that's weird, especially talking about on a tech show, but there's a reason for this sleep one cannot teach without sleep. It's true. So a few months ago my sister-in-law recommended that I try a bedside oil diffuser to help me sleep since I'm. A very, very light sleeper, and I wasn't sure if it would work because I'm not big into like the hoity-toity, aromatherapy and crystals thing, but honestly, like I, have a friend that does the crystal thing and I think they're beautiful, but I just never have gotten into that.

It works for her, and she turned me on a numeric and numeric is a wonder drug. Just like Windex. That's a real reference, but I was open to the idea. Smell is very powerful, apparently yeah, apparently so I tried out aromatherapy with a couple of different oil, diffusers and I love it. So if you are like me, and you're having a hard time getting to sleep or you constantly, wake up throughout the night, like I would wake up like five or six times in a night which is terrible, I by no means will replace the doctor, so you know make sure that you go, and they let you know if you have any diagnosed sleep issues like AB, NIA or anything like this, but this worked really, really well for me.

So I use what I was just about to ask what oil you use, but you just picked it up a hundred percent pure natural lavender oil. So this has been shown to increase deep sleep cycles via scientific studies via aromatherapy, so what I do is I take one of these little guys. This is called the end gear, second-generation aromatherapy oil, diffuser, cool mist, humidifier blah blah, insert 22 keywords here exactly so. You just fill this with about a hundred milliliters of tap water. However, they recommend also using a distilled water since that will make it run longer, just like my iron, and it only costs 13 bucks, but of course, that price fluctuates a little on Amazon.

So this diffuser plugs right into the wall. It fits enough water to continually run for three to four hours, or you can do inner minute mode, which makes it go thirty Seconds, on thirty seconds off for six to eight hours and once there's no water left, you don't have to worry about getting up and turning it off. It just turns off itself and the diffuser easily fills a 100 square foot room with the smell of lavender whenever I run it overnight, and it has a little slit in the very top to let out the vapor, the diffused water and I have this set directly towards the bed. Whenever I sleep now, you have probably noticed from the video you're seeing here that the lights there are lights and these can be shut off or set to a specific color, which is cool I like the little rainbow pattern that they do. You can also change between continuous mode to intermittent mode via the other button.

On the front, the only major problem I have with this diffuser is that the indicator light, which is, if I take this off. You can see the little space where it's at it's, either red or green, and that's always on. If you're using the diffuser seems bright, it's very bright yeah, so you could cover this up with some black tape, but since it's transparent around it, you're still going to get some of that glow. So that is one thing of concern with this specific diffuser that I've been using since this one is also kind of big I. Didn't I just wanted something portable for conventions for going to CES.

So I brought this one with me or New Zealand I'm, taking this with me today, Zealand for sure so, I brought this one. This is the act: P portable travel, size, USB, aroma, essential oil, diffuser blah, and it's 23 bucks, so a little more expensive, but it also works exactly the same way exactly the same amount of water can be held.100 milliliters and this one comes with a USB cable so that you can use it with a power bank or your wall. Wart AC adapter either one works fine, so you can totally take this glamping, which I love should the scent of nature offend you yeah fill the air with lavender all right. It does come with a cup to refill the water tank. It's this little one here, and it does have measurements on the side.

So you don't overfill it, which is great. It's enough to fill a hotel room with the aroma of lavender or whatever, and your scent is, and this one also has LEDs on it as well, and they do the same kind of color cycle. They can be turned off completely and the LED for the indicator, light that tells you that you're currently using the diffuser that can be turned off completely because there is no indicator light. It just can be nothing, there's, no lights whatsoever. When you're, you can sit in the darkness with your scent and sleep.

It's wonderful well, like my boys, will sleep through Rage Against, the Machine, but if I walk into their, you know the room with a flashlight everybody wakes up. It's the weirdest family I'm. The same way as I can wake up. If anybody moves or if there's like somebody enters the room, makes no noise like I. Wake up to anything, this one will last eight hours with intermittent mode, and then it auto shuts off just the same as the other one.

Both diffusers can also be run as just simple night lights. That cycle through the colors, or you can choose your favorite color. If you don't want to use the diffuser part as well, so have these helped me sleep better I would say a hundred percent, yes, I fall asleep, faster I. Wake up much less than I used to I can actually get a full eight hours of sleep and get that deep cycle of sleep, but even if I didn't need them for a lavender oil, diffusing I would still use them to diffuse, like eucalyptus or citrus scents in my home office. Just because they smell good, and I would prefer that my home office smell like eucalyptus or citrus, as opposed to my dirty socks, which sometimes it does or cat litter, which sometimes it does so highly recommend I.

Think these things are amazing, and I'm, so glad I found them. They have like literally changed my life, so the thing I need is something will keep my cat from banging on the window by my hairs or the ones in or out something that will calm. Your cat, oh and I, should mention, since you mentioned pets, as did I that if you get essential oils on them, some essential oils can be very toxic. Don't the hustle? Don't stick this on your animal because that's awful for them. Also, I've read that with aromatherapy, if you notice any kind of respiratory issues with your animals that you should stop using the aromatherapy immediately the diffusers and take your animal to the vet, because that could be a sign of a much bigger issue, I'm not laughing, because it's funny because respiratory ailments for anyone, people or animals suck yeah I'm laughing as I'm imagining using my husky as a scent diffusion system at home.

So what I do is like if I'm running this I, just don't let my cat in the bedroom, and then it's fine, so yeah highly recommend, love them. And, of course, if you have recommendations because I was thinking about upgrading from one that doesn't have a light on the front. Let me know what you're using out there as well, because I would love to find something. That's a little better as well, perhaps in the Terracotta, with a light blaze ceramic ask a technical, or you can tweet me at snubs, SNU BTS, a big thank you to hack 5 for the studio space that we shoot tech thing in each and every week.
