Xiaomi Redmi 9 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S - Smartphone Comparison

The Xiaomi Redmi, nine and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9s are two very similar smartphones, but what do a four-letter word and an extra consonant make in terms of difference we'll walk through this side-by-side comparison in this video, I'm Mateo, the chief mobile opinions here at tech travel gates. If you don't already, please do subscribe to the tech travel geeks here on YouTube right then. So earlier this year we did a full in-depth, long-term review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9s, and it offers amazing value for money at under 200 pounds sterling or under 250 us dollars. This lovely chunk of glass is a great smartphone, but we are also in about to publish our full long term review of the Xiaomi Redmi nine. This doesn't have note, and it doesn't have an s. So, let's walk through the key differences and similarities they're both chunky, smartphones, they're, not small devices.

It's really important to bear in mind that for the price, the Xiaomi Redmi 9 is less than 150 pound sterling you're getting a lot of smartphones again, but in quite a different configuration. But incredibly, you get a nice big screen where the Redmi Note 9s has, in this case a 6.67-inch screen the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 has a 6.53 inch, so it is slightly smaller. There is also a difference in terms of how that screen is laid out. The Redmi 9 has a teardrop notch at the top of the screen that houses a selfie camera, in this case an 8 megapixel one. Whereas if we look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9s, it has a dodge a cut-out, selfie camera in the center of the device, and it is a 16 megapixel sensor.

It is a much better selfie camera compared to the one on the Redmi, nine uh. The other thing that is quite noticeable is that, despite being the same resolution, so in this case they're both full HD plus displays, the two displays have quite a difference in terms of brightness at equal settings. The Redmi 9 is slightly dimmer compared to the Redmi Note 9s, but for most people unless putting the devices side by side, that's not really something noticeable. Now the resolution is almost the same. I should have said that correctly, the first time, whereas the Redmi Note 9s, is full HD plus and is running in this case at 1080 by 2400 pixels.

The aspect ratio of the Redmi nine is slightly different. It's a 19 and a half to nine aspect ratios rather than 20 to nine. We have on the Redmi Note 9s. That means that it's 1080 pixel wide and 2 340 pixels high, so you're missing out on 60 pixels there, but to most people that really won't make much of a difference. So that's the key parts of the front of the device, the display and how that selfie notch is laid out.

The construction is quite different as well. I've used as you've seen there's a slight difference in screen size, but the Redmi nine is made of glass, it's nice and shiny nice and reflective and refractive, whereas the Redmi 9 opts for a textured plastic back finish, and it's a very nice pet texture too, with that concentric pattern of the texture starting off from the circle around the camera pills or the camera modules. So it is a different design, but obviously plastic is much less expensive than glass, not only that the two batteries that are behind those bags are pretty much the same: they're 5000 William hour batteries, which in both cases will get you through a day of very heavy usage without too much of a problem. They also both use USB type-c for charging, and in the case of both the Redmi Note 9s and the Redmi 9, they both use 18 watt fast charging, it's not the fastest standard out there, but it does work, and it's surprisingly fast compared to the good old 10 watt. Charging most smartphones have we're looking at you Nokia.

So whilst we're looking at the bottom, another key feature both smartphones have is the carriage port that 3.5 millimeter audio jack, and I'm really happy that the Redmi line of smartphones is maintaining that feature, rather than succumbing to the trends we've seen on higher end smartphones, which don't have that anymore. I love the 3.5 millimeter audio jack. I hope for it to remain now, whilst we're on the back one. Other key thing to bear in mind is the camera difference. It's not just the difference in the design of the camera modules, they house two very different camera setups.

So the Redmi Note 9 s has a 48 megapixel main sensor, an 8 megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 5 megapixel autofocus macro sensor and a two megapixel depth sensor. So nice setup overall, it's not the best camera out there, but value for money, you're, getting a lot of camera smartphones here, and you could say the same about the Redmi 9. , the difference being that the main sensor here is a 13 megapixel one. It has an 8 megapixel ultra-wide sensor. It also has a 5 megapixel macro sensor, but as far as I'm aware, it doesn't have autofocus, and then it has a 2 megapixel depth sensor, so nothing to get too excited about.

But it is a step-down compared to the Redmi Note 9s, the step-down isn't just in the sensors themselves. The Redmi Note 9s can record video at 4k resolution at 30 frames per. Second, that's thanks to its Qualcomm snapdragon 720 g chipset, whereas the Redmi nine, the standard, Redmi 9, is running on a MediaTek hello g80 chipset. It is a slightly less efficient, less powerful chipset, so it can't record 4k video it maxes out at 1080p video. So that's the key play through between the two um.

Definitely the Redmi Note 9s has much better photography in place compared to the Redmi nine, but there's one thing it just doesn't have, which is NFC. NFC is a key technology. It enables you to use your smartphone for wireless payments in shops and also for accessing public transports transit. The shiny, better phone in this case does not have NSC NFC, whereas the Redmi 9, the slightly more affordable smartphone, at least in the stock keeping unit that is sold in the UK, does have NFC so really important thing to bear in mind. If you're, considering between the two which one to buy NFC is present on the Redmi nine, it isn't on the Redmi Note 9s.

So that's the key differences there in terms of software they're, both running Xiaomi's, Xiaomi's, operating system or Xiaomi's android distribution, which is mini. Now I use uh action launcher on both devices, because I just prefer it to the mini default launcher, but in terms of performance, it's pretty equivalent. One thing to bear in mind is that, as of mid-December 2020, my Redmi Note 9s has had the upgrade to mini 12. , it's a slightly different user interface, slight improvements across the board here, whereas the Redmi 9 is still on mini 11. , we know mini 12 is coming, but we're a while back from actually seeing that.

So, if you check for the system, update you'll see that mini 11 is already present, whereas is still on the Redmi nine, whereas mini 12 is on our Redmi Note 9s. So we've talked about these features. Everything in terms of ergonomics, the slightly smaller small of the phone of the Redmi 9, is lovely. That textured back is great, but in both cases I do use cases on my smartphone. So that means that I don't get to see the backs or feel them all the time I go with whichever case I have and if you haven't already do check out the case, unboxing and reviews that we have for both devices on the tech, travel, geeks, YouTube channel.

So overall another feature they both have, and I find very useful, especially when traveling is an infrared blaster. So both smartphones have infrared blasters. You can use those to remote control, your television, which is really, really convenient in different situations, so which one should you buy well consider very carefully what the key feature you're looking for is, if you're looking to use your smartphone to access public transit or make payments, I would definitely go with the Redmi 9 over the Redmi Note 9s. Both of them have a headphone jack. Both of them come with generous amounts of storage on board, and being expandable with micros, so for media consumption, for media use and also creation with the cameras they're in a good place for storage.

One thing to bear in mind is that this, the video capture on the Redmi Note 9s, is better. It can record at 4k resolution which, for many reasons, might be better for what content you're, creating if you're just going to be on Instagram. That may not be as big of an advantage, because most social networks compress and reprocess content to work better on their platforms. But if you're going to be wanting to maybe edit the content, the Redmi Note 9s is definitely better. Both devices have FM radio, provided you have wires headphones going through that carriage port.

So that's great one of the key differences in terms of ergonomics and use is the fingerprint scanner. So the Redmi Note 9s has a side mounted fingerprint scanner on the side. Here you tap to wake, but also to unlock your smartphone, whereas the Redmi 9 has a fingerprint scanner under the camera mod, the central camera module on the back. So you tap that to unlock your smartphone, and it unlocks very quickly. It's down to you, which one you prefer.

I usually prefer a centrally mounted one on my smartphone, but I have got quite used to through multiple devices this year. I've got quite used to side mounted fingerprint scanners, so the Redmi Note 9s the Poco x3 NFC, as well as the 10t pro 5g all have sides mounted fingerprint scanners and once you get used to it, it's not something you're too bothered about so in terms of overall performance, it's equivalent, if you're going to be using a smartphone for social media, consuming media messaging and video calling they're, both very, very similar. It's down to you, which one you purchase, look at what your demands are before, making the final decision and do consider other smartphones in this price range, the hundreds to 200, pound price range or the 150 to 250 dollar price range for smartphones is very, very active at the moment. There's lots of choices and these two red medium devices, despite just having one four-letter words and an extra consonant in terms of difference are two very different offerings in uh what they offer. So thank you for watching this far.
