The $200 Flagship Smartphone Alternative

Very nice, they tell me Lou, they say, show me. The budget phones show me the phones that are affordable, that deliver on the value for money and supposedly this is that next one from one of the companies that sort of started that conversation around flagship specifications for a lot less money. That, of course, is polo. I remember the original homophone it sort of flipped the smartphone world a little now since that device. We haven't exactly seen that flagship spec that top-tier snapdragon chip inside a phone. That's a lot less money, but they're still aiming at that value for money, and this is that next big play, and I'm I'm hearing the noise, I'm hearing the chatter about this particular device on Twitter and elsewhere.

So here we are, it is the Poco x3 NFC, and it looks like mine- is going to be in cobalt, blue pop off the lid right here, and we've got another little box, that's because they give us a case. Somehow, when you spend less money, or you approach the budget-minded smartphones you get more in the box, you see how that goes. We have a sim card tool right here. We have a case also included in the package, there's a little of paperwork. The case is your first indication of the design of the smartphone, and you see a large circular cut out for the camera unit.

This is a basic case just to get you up and running, but you have to appreciate seeing it inside the box. Is this a poster? Look at all this? These are stickers. I didn't expect to see that so the brand, the Poco brand, is kind of picking up some steam here uh. Maybe you want to slap those on the bumper, and you show your support. Is that a temporary tattoo? I believe this is a first.

I have unboxed many smartphones here on the channel. This might be the first temporary tattoo do. Am I going to put it on? Am I going to slap it on it's quite possible, it's the classic! It's the heart, with the arrow going through it. So as you can yeah, this is that cobalt blue, that I mentioned from the exterior of the box and that's what it looks like. Ah, so the cutout is not fully circular.

That's kind of interesting there's a circular indication there with the design, but then the camera unit itself is kind of an unusual shape, a little plastic peel for you. That is some seriously cobalt blue and I actually missed the specifications which were actually planted on the front real quick before I pull the plastic off. It's the snapdragon 732g up to 2.3 gigahertz. So we are in a 700 series of snapdragon chips, 120 hertz display a lot of people can be excited about this. At this price point target price somewhere around 250 USD.

You, of course, can do the conversion for your local region, 240 hertz touch sampling rate, which of course, that's important for that kind of that really fast feedback.64 megapixels, AI quad camera built in 20 megapixels in display front camera for the selfies, and this is very exciting to people that love seeing the fast charging and the big batteries showing up at the lower price point. So we have 5160 William hour battery and a 33 watt fast charge. Now I will do the plastic peel very nice, one more sticker to go okay good. So it's a flashy back on this thing. You have the Poco logo kind of I mean fairly substantial on the back.

I don't know if that's to your taste or not, but if you want to rep the brand you're going to see it right there, you have these little lines, kind of moving on a diagonal down the center and then just cobalt, blue sort of reflecting everywhere else. It's got a shimmer to it. It kind of changes colors a little depending on the reflection of the light. Look at the variety of camera units, including the 64 megapixel main camera up here in this section the whole thing has a really premium feel to it. It has some weight to it fingerprint scanner over here on the thumb portion, where your finger lines up.

I don't mind this. I'm used to this uh, it's capacitive, so it's fast, you have the volume rocker up above that over here is your sim card tray, then, on the bottom of the device. You'll find your USB connector for that 33 watt fast charge the speaker unit, as well as a 3.5 mil headphone jack, which many people still use and love also inside the package. Of course, we have to have that fast charger, as mentioned 33 watts, USB type c, to a cable to connect to that charger. We're going to pull the screen protector off this could be.

This is a crazy move, very nice all right. So here we have the fingerprint setup for security. You just line up your thumb, as mentioned now, one of the benefits of having it on the power switch. You touch there all the time anyways. It's kind of second nature, to have your thumb in that location, and so it's kind of a two for one you're going to go hit the button and your thumb is already there done.

It's pretty quick. What's interesting with these things is once it's semi-booted, then it's really quick, but if you go just on it, it's like a little hair of a second slower, but this is uh acceptable. I don't know where I stand on this. To be honest, I can adapt to the various locations of fingerprint scanners, whether it's the back the side or the in display there's an advantage with the in display, if you're one of these people that likes to unlock on the tabletop. But I find you know it's that those tend to be just a touch slower in most cases.

So it's a bit of a trade-off as you can see, it's a fairly snappy experience, but I do want to check to see what the display is set to out of the box, and I was right. It is snappy because it's already at that 120 hertz, which is kind of surprising right out the box and a lot of other devices you need to select for it, or it would be some sort of adaptive setting. Maybe this is adaptive. It says some apps will increase refresh rate automatically to improve picture quality and if you do set it backwards to 60 hertz, you will receive better battery life. But do you really need to worry about battery life when you have 5 000, plus William hours? I don't know I like having the option, but anyway it's 120 hertz straight out the box.

There are some modifications you can make. This is the automatic mode based on the ambient lighting conditions, there's also a saturated setting and a standard setting. That goes a little more yellow. But if you don't want it look at this, you have tons of opportunity to go in there and change. The white point change the white balance.

I was happy with auto, so I'll. Stick to that for now. I think the reason that people are excited about this device is the combination of specifications and the kind of the whole package. The way it's put together for the price you have, this aggressive screen to body ratio. You have a hole, punch cut out, which is essentially in line with those much more expensive devices from companies like Samsung.

You have the 120 hertz display. I don't need to explain this to you at this point. We've talked about it so much. It gives you an advantage in the kind of snappy feel of the device, the responsiveness of the device. If you do jump into certain games, you can actually experience up to 120 fps, as long as the game supports the unlocked frame rate.

Is this going to give you an idea? Well, in this case, in this frame, you barely see the hole punch because there's a TV back there, let me barely takes up any space. Obviously this is a. This is a popular choice right now for your front-facing camera and where to place it yes really. No. This is an apple product only for Apple employees.

So you know it's high level, so yeah we're getting uh a lot of low ends, and probably the majority of the audio out of the bottom section, but we are getting some more from the earpiece location, makes dialogue a little easier to hear it's not the best sounding smartphone speaker. It's definitely not blowing me away, but it gets the job done all right. Let's load up the camera, real quick, we're going to go with the trusty plant as per usual, and I will load up on the 1x to start and bam. We've of course, also got an ultra-wide in here.0.6 gotta have it and the third setting is the 2x as far as optical is concerned. Alamo.

Now, if I click on the AI button, let's see if it does any better now that it knows it's a plant, it did boost up the green. How about if we toggle automatic HDR now what you're going to do all right, so we'll just browse through some of those images. Real quick, the AI mode, gave me a little more green in the plant. There's lots of detail. You have plenty of pixels.

This is, of course, a fairly limited environment, but, to just give you an idea of your available focal ranges, that's the standard focal range, that's your 2x close and there's your ultra-wide fitting plenty more into the frame. So you have the camera versatility built in. If I flip it around to the front-facing camera, supposedly there's a lot of resolution on the selfie three two one and then let's see, if AI can what AI likes to do to me. Maybe it's probably going to be fairly it's fairly, similar wow. It's a lot of detail.

We talked about the beard hair many times on the show. It's become a meme and the beard hairs they change colors like uh, like the leaves are about to change because fall is coming. It's my favorite season I put the hoodie on, is pumpkin spice town right now out there. Nonetheless, it's lots of resolution. If you like selfies, my goodness, look at you now all right, so we have to do the quick charge test, as we've done many times on the channel.

I want to see the animation. It always gets me going every time, and now we have it, like. I said, on more affordable devices, so it's very exciting in the world of sub 300 smartphones getting some fast some faster chargers out there. To be honest, this one 33 watt we plug it in what are they gonna? Give us turbocharge baby? You just watch it flow. If that doesn't get you going, I don't know what does and so you're going to have that support in this device and to be fair, it's filling up a very large battery once again to remind you over 5000 William hours.

So do we have a new budget? King look, it's got all the pieces, it feels very premium in the hand. It's got everything you're looking for no, it does not have an 800 series, snapdragon all right that ship has sailed, and besides this one is priced more aggressively than would ever be possible with that other chip in it. Will this be good enough for most people? I think yeah, probably now you're getting all this tasty stuff, like the 120 hertz, like the really aggressive screen to body ratio like the quick charge and, of course, the big battery, and you're getting it at a price that I think is going to be healthy for a lot of people. So there you have if it's the newest Poco device. This is the x3 NFC, don't forget the NFC, and who knows I might just have to.

I might just have to slap this on right now, it's quite possible. You.
