What's going on, if you didn't watch my uh unboxing yesterday it was a live unboxing of the galaxy fold 2, and I know what you're thinking Dave. Why? Why now? What happened? Well, I've been eyeing this, and I have documented my series or transition from the Apple ecosystem, as they say over to Samsung's, and so I have videos comparing the buds pro. The galaxy watch three and a bunch of other stuff uh cases for the s21 ultra. I actually have a case coming for this day, so I'm excited for that. But anyway, I just want to do a quick video about my impressions as someone who was kind of skeptical about photos overall, folds full doubles. I don't know if that's even a word, um and kind of my opinion on the design and a couple other things so again, pro max s11, ultra candy bar style phone.
So you know more or less my first experience with a foldable regardless of Samsung Xiaomi, whatever the other companies are first time using it, and I have to say it's not nearly as brick like as people made it out to be um. I know that something: oh it's too thick, it's way too large in the pocket and a bunch of other things, and I'm like I don't know it's like. I know it's thicker right like you know that, but it's not like this people would stack up. You know 13 12 pro maxes and go it's about this thick and, like I don't know, it doesn't seem that bad to me, and it's kind of tapered here. So it's not like it's just like completely bulbous, everywhere, um, and again you're buying this phone.
You kind of know right. You are giving up. Some of that. Like you know, you don't expect this to be like an iPhone SEO. I'll put it that way, um and overall, it still feels really weird to do this to a phone.
I'm just being honest with you not a bad way. Furthermore, I'm like it's so weird like I'm like worried, I'm going to break it um, but I have to be honest. Man there's a few things I already like right away. Obviously the display this is 120 hertz, you know, Samsung makes the best displays. There's no really any question about that.
So hopefully, this year apple can buy those Samsung panels and do whatever magic they need to and get 120 hertz in there because, as I said in my last video, it doesn't matter. If you don't see it, you should want it for the price, regardless everyone else is doing it. They should do it too. That's not the only reason. I understand what I'm just saying.
Market choices have shown that people want 120 hertz. Even if you don't see it, I'm just saying now. The one thing is that the external display here doesn't have a 120hz panel, but I think Samsung has this here as like you know you can use it. It's definitely serviceable. I mean the keys are kind of tiny.
If I show you the keys here, um they're definitely smallish, but I mean you can use voice to type. You can do swipe. It's manageable, it's not unusable and compared to the original galaxy fold that I saw this screen is way better, but ideally you're going to use this, and then you're going to open it up and use it as you see fit and again massive. This is cool. I love that, like it just feels so weird to use something like this to be honest with you, but um other than that one of the cool software features I like are this.
I or this is this. Furthermore, I don't know what you call this. You can pair these apps together and boom. Just like that, I'm, like that's pretty cool. You can resize them.
I'm definitely a fan of that resizable windows. For some reason, when I bring it up on iOS and iPad DSP, I don't want to resize, but when doesn't I don't know why you wouldn't want resizable windows every mo every mainstream piece of tech like computer, wise laptop, like everything, has resizable windows? I don't know why we wouldn't want that. But anyway I like that you can flip this around. If you want to go vertical or horizontal, and then you also can transition, you know, do you want? You know, let's say, there's a video here that you want to put up there. You just tap that and switch it.
I like that. You know- and I know you're probably thinking these are rudimentary features but hey listen. This would be very advanced if it was on the iPhone I'll put it that way, and so I, like the fact that you can create these app pairs here. If you will um, and I'm a fan of that- and you know again, you can create now. I think some apps don't support it to a certain degree.
But like again I just like. Oh, I don't want to open Samsung pay. I have to see. Listen, I still gotta. I still gotta, add some things and configure this thing.
I don't like that. They put it at the bottom as deep I mean I guess they want you to find it, but it's kind of annoying if the gestures are down here, to put it right there too, but I guess they when you set it up anyway enough of that ramp um. I don't know I really like the 120 hertz. It just feels weird to do this. I feel like I shouldn't be able to do that like that, shouldn't be a thing um and I don't mind the crease.
I mean it's there right if you hold it in certain angles like right there, you guys obviously can see there's a crease, but I mean you kind of expect that it's a folding phone um and overall the design is fine. Furthermore, I'm definitely again, I have a case coming as you can see. Gnarly fingerprints. I have a case coming that'll- make that all pretty I'm just blown away that they have a screen facing out this way right, and then they have this internal screen. I don't know how they do it, the wizardry that they have um and so another thing that I really like, and it's going to listen, I'm going to keep I'm going to keep bringing this up the fingerprint scanner now what I've preferred? Maybe an in-display fingerprint scanner, maybe, but I prefer fingerprint scanners overall now.
This does have uh the face unlock option here, let's see yep, it worked right there um, but I do like this capacitive. I guess button fingerprint reader. Just because I'll be honest with you, I've never been obsessed with face ID and face skating. I never ever have if you land on the table like this. It doesn't work um if you're in bed- and you have something covering a little of your face- doesn't work.
You can open your eyes all the way it doesn't work if, like you, got to swipe up from the home screen every single time, or I'm sorry, the lock screen every single time when you get your phone like face ID to me is cool the technology, but like sometimes I feel like people, let that overshadow the functionality of it fingerprint scanners all day, personal opinion, um and then again, type c, like some of these are going to be basic kind of things. But it's so nice to have type c like lightning makes zero sense unless your apple, and you make tons of money off of charging people to royalties. I guess for cabling, um now. The one thing I didn't touch on is the camera. I did take some sample photos and coming from the s21 ultra, I can see that it's, it's definitely not on the same tier as the s21 ultra and again, this came out what, at the end, not a year ago.
You know, but it's coming up on it like several months right, maybe six, eight months or so there's that there and also like I understand, there are limitations here right, like this camera module, is still impressive that they fit in here. I'm not saying the photos are bad, but as someone who's used, that's 201 taking photos and videos. You can tell there's a little of a difference there, I'm not going to lie to you, but I don't think people buy this for the camera. You don't buy this and go gee. I want the greatest camera I can get because chances are.
If you are that person you're, not even looking at a phone you're looking at like a mirrorless camera or a full, you know DSLR kind of setup um. So you guys, let me know in the comments below what like kind of tips or tricks you have. You know I like that. There's not a ton of in your face software uh that Samsung's trying to throw at you with the fold. You know it's almost like taking their normal Samsung one UI experience and just making it bigger and that's not a bad thing.
Um would be really cool, and I don't know how they would do. This is s pen support uh, because I could see that being a really like compelling note replacement. Now I know, listen, I'm a note fan. I like the foxiness, I like what the notes represent all that stuff, but if they are getting rid of it and doing it on the s21 ultra with that case and all that stuff, I wish I could figure out a way to do it here, because I'm pretty sure the other day. This is still a plastic screen.
That's why they're like please don't like to dig your nail into this or whatever, which makes sense right, um, but overall, I'm having a good time with this man. I would say um if you're worried about durability and again this is not my full kind of cookies, but if you worried about durability, I would definitely pass on this like. If your first question is you know how durable is it drop test? All that stuff like this is fragile, even, even though I believe, and I have confidence in the build. It's still something like for this much money. You should definitely consider your use case for it right like if you again, if you were that concerned, I would definitely look at something else just because, even if you have a case, there's a lot there's moving parts right.
This hinge here like there are things that are moving so, regardless of what kind of case you have there's still the potential for something to happen, which I would recommend insurance on something like this um. But overall you know I won't go into some software things now, because I haven't used it enough to tell you guys, I can say the same things carry over from the s9 ultra. I love that you can oh gosh, that's stupid, Samsung pay! I love that you can clear all like you, don't get that on iOS I mean I know it sounds like lame, but you bring it up, but it's just odd that you can't um the same thing. You can schedule text messages I believe. Let's see I have to set it up, but I'm pretty sure you can schedule when to send a text out.
They don't have that on here. Like there's a lot of these little things that are android tied, you know android related, it's maybe Samsung related um, again one UI now on this device, it's its still kind of prevalent as far as them, bringing the UI elements down like there like on iPhone they're all kind of up here right, but you can pull this down and get to everything, and it carries through right. So up here, oh Wi-Fi. If I'm down here and let's say I'm holding it like this, I want to get the Wi-Fi I can't reach, but I can pull this down, and now I can reach it like that kind of design. I'm a huge fan of, and it carries over to this, and it makes a lot of sense.
The bigger the display, the more sense having those things come down make, but let me know in the comments below what you think again: now some impressions, the design is definitely more adorable than I thought. I think the concept of this is interesting. I still don't think this is going to be mainstream. If I'm being honest with you, I might be wrong. I don't see average people one price alone right, but exclude the price.
I don't see a lot of people buying this just because they're, it's so unknown to them. You know what I mean like the idea that people are going to unfold and fold their phones. I don't think it's going to be main mainstream. I do think, though, there's definitely a place for it and that's where I think I was wrong. You know I didn't hate on it.
I guess I should say, but because I don't like to judge stuff based on reading someone else's opinion, I like to get it in my hands and fold it. This feels so weird. I got to keep saying it's so weird like I know you guys have been doing it for a while, but it blows me away every time. I do that, and I've been following mobile tech forever, so that was kind of a side ramp, but I'm like I never thought I'd see the day when you'd get something like this, and here it is it's crazy to think I'm a fan. Furthermore, I like the fingerprint scanner again.
That's definitely a plus- and I know a lot of this isn't specific to uh to this phone here. But overall, that's what I'm looking for now. Fingerprint scanners always on displays that's great uh type c! That's great this! I believe this has reverse wireless charging, so I can charge my buds pro so a lot of the stuff that the s21 ultra is great at carries over to here, but you just get this amazing kind of I don't know immersive experience, and the last thing I touched on is like the usability like at first. I was kind of scared that this would be like trying to hold an iPad Mini, but then I realized that they do a good job of at least the design like it. You kind of meet right at that crease right, so you don't have to extend past.
If I can get that crease in focus a little like right here like if there was is it was any bigger, I feel like I would be stretching over top to get to one side or another, but it's just the right size that I can reach that. I can reach that, and I'm not overextending myself. So I'm a big fan of that. But let me know in the comments below you think I'm definitely enjoying it. I got to play with this more and get it set up.
I have different ideas for split screen, stuff that I have over here, and I know you guys you can do like windows on top of windows on top of windows. Let me see if I can uh. Let me see if I can get one going: uh I'll, I'll, save the software deep dive for another video. I just want to get my first impressions out there. I think this is a killer multimedia consumption device, which, let's be honest, a lot of listens, I'm a YouTube fan, so there's going to be a YouTube machine, a Reddit machine like even scrolling through my emails, I was like man.
This is kind of nice, make everything's easier to read. I don't even open maps like maps is probably killer on here. Um yeah like it's just I don't know it's so hard to explain until you use it and again that's where I like to this channel. I like to get this stuff in-house in my hands, use it and then say: hey here's what I think, I'm not gonna just judge it at a distance and go oh stupid, folding phone um! This is cool man like I, don't know how you can't think this is cool. Uh you're, definitely going to be an edge case for someone that wants this right.
Like again, I don't think the average person's going to walk in. Even if this was only a thousand bucks, I don't know many people that would hop on this, but that doesn't mean it's not good. You know it's like an uh. I don't know it's like McDonald's burgers right. The number one seller but like maybe this is like filet Mignon.
I don't know you insert whatever analogy you want, but that's my impressions as someone who's somewhat skeptical of mainstream adoption. I've definitely changed my mind. It's pretty cool gotta. Give him credit for that. Well-built it feels like a like, honestly.
It feels like a deal at this price. This. If you told me this was like four grand I'm not like. Okay, maybe not that much. If you told me this was like three thousand dollars, I'd, probably yeah.
I could see that you know and the fact that it's not and there are all kinds of deals, and again it just feels weird man in a good way, like I shouldn't be able to do that. I should be concerned for the phone's health, but uh anyway enough rambling. For me, that's kind of my experience. Um and again I brought this in just to give you an idea, because you might be like well Dave you're, not diving, deep into these settings. That's because I still have to figure those out um and again coming from this.
It's like not a fair comparison. Honestly um, this doesn't fold, doesn't have 120 hertz. It doesn't have a lot of things. This does have pros um, but you know it one's foldable, one's a traditional phone, so it's kind of a weird comparison, but I feel like giving you context, definitely helped, but anyway, that's it for me. First impressions, I'm happy with it.
I have to dive deep into this and use it as my main device as they say and uh will you. Let me know in the comments below, if you have any tips or tricks, and I'll check you guys out in the next video peace.
