Samsung Galaxy S21 Unboxing & Hands-On - Phantom White

Hey how's it going everybody, I hope, you're all staying safe, having a good new year so far, and today I've got the retail version of the all-new Samsung Galaxy s21. This is the T-Mobile version to be specific, and now this video was supposed to be up a good eight nine hours ago, but ups is estimated delivery. Time window is about as reliable as an untrained carrier pigeon. So here we are. This thing is freezing cold. It's been uh in the truck all morning all afternoon, and here we are into nighttime now so uh, as you can tell, this box is considerably smaller than uh previous s-line boxes.

That is, of course, because there is no charger in this box. First, they took our headphones, and they took our charger. Well, what can you say? There are a lot of opinions about how and why this came to be I'll, let you form your own and comparing it here to the iPhone 12 Pro box, and you can see that uh. Of course, Samsung was actually first to have these black boxes, but otherwise these boxes look quite similar. The iPhone box slightly thinner here, the Samsung box slightly longer, I guess so, very, very similar here, s21 5g.

I got this in the phantom white version. Of course, the all-new snapdragon 8 processors, eight gigs of ram internationally, you get an Enos processor from Samsung, but one that's uh performed decently well in benchmark tests, though I know a lot of you internationally still would rather have the snapdragon version. So, let's get started here, I'll show you what's on the back of this box, no sensitive info had to check real, quick and, of course, uh. Just your typical info here about the model of the phone and, what's included in the box, this side of the box. The left side just says galaxy.

The top is blank. The right side of the box says Samsung on it, and the bottom has some serial information I'll keep that covered, and so here we go just to compare real, quick as well. This is the s20 box from last year, of course, February of last year, this was released, and you can see how much thicker, how much bigger in general this box is actually about the same length, but that is a larger box to be sure. So, let's get this show on the road. Let's go, okay, so pre-ordered this on the first day and of course it arrived today, official launch supposed to be Friday, and here we go, so we've got the phone obviously set that off to the side for a second.

What else do we have nothing on the inside of the box? Usually you have an insert that's kind of stuck on the top here, but not this time. Your booklets all seem to be in this same space with the USB cable. So here we are USB c cable. You can see here USB c, the USB and your booklets a quick reference guide, T-Mobile sim card all right, and I might um. I might swap out my sim card now.

I might actually use this brand-new sim card uh, just because T-Mobile has recommended that for their standalone 5g and there are people who say that their old sim card is working fine with standalone 5g. So it may not be completely necessary, but others have reported that they have indeed noticed improved 5g performance when they use one of the new sim cards, so I'll be sure to do that and there's nothing else in this box. I don't know it's a little depressing. If you ask me, but that's the way of the world now here we are back to the phone. So, as you can see here, we've got a flat display this year and I personally never had any issues with accidental touches or anything like that on the curved screens, and I usually use my phone without a case.

However, what I like about the flat display is: it gives more space to have these uh metal rails, this metal chassis to be a little thicker on the sides which, to me, looks a lot more premium and feels more premium as well, especially now that Samsung has this plastic back which we'll get to in a second, and I may rant about that. No pre-installed screen protector this year. This is just a flimsy piece of plastic and on the back there you see it. The phantom white all right definitely feels and looks like plastic, but I think that shows a little less on the white version when you've got a matte plastic back and a darker color you'll see those fingerprints, and that was proven by the s20 Fe that came out late last year, although other than that um very nice design. There's no excuse for putting plastic on the back.

I'm sorry! This is your premium line. This is supposed to be your premium flagship Samsung, and it's supposed to look and feel like one and though it's a well-built built phone and there are positives to having plastic. There's a reason you have your Fe line, there's a reason you have a bunch of other phones in the mid and lower tier. You should not be doing this with your flagship, just my opinion, but I do feel strongly about that. So you see that the metal chassis extends into the camera housing, which is a nice touch.

I think that looks very nice, and I believe all this is covered in plastic. So let me peel the plastic off, so you can get a good, a good look at everything all right. I believe I got the plastic off of this entire thing now. So, once again, here's the front and the flat display on the top here got your noise-canceling microphone up there on the right side, you got your volume rocker and your power key, and you see it's pretty uniform now as compared with the s20, where you saw very, very thin side metallic rails that had to protrude a bit in order to accommodate for the buttons now I would like to see more uniform metal chassis extending toward the back, but maybe in the next iteration. I really like how this looks up here in the top right of the phone, the middle chassis, and you see again how it extends into the camera housing area and, of course the metal is a brushed finish here, matte and brushed around the camera lenses, and it's polished the rest of the way.

I really, really like a polished, metal chassis, and I like that, it's rounded, as opposed to the flat metallic edges on the iPhone 12 Pro when it's polished, and it's matte, it shows fingerprints a lot easier, so at least Samsung is still doing it. The right way, as far as the shape and the finish of the metal chassis, the other side, completely devoid of any buttons or anything on the bottom, USB c port, your sim tray microphone, speaker, grille and, of course, this time around. There is no area for micro, SD expansion. This comes in 128, gigabytes of storage. If you want a s21 and anything larger than 128 gigabytes of storage, then you have to get the phantom gray version.

That's the only one that comes in 256, gigabytes of storage uh. I will throw this brand-new sim card in here, I'll, activate it, and then we'll turn this bad boy on. Let's see what it's talking about all right, I activated the new sim. So let's turn this thing on should have some power in it. There we go and as we do that once again comparison here with last year's galaxy, s20 more premium glass finish, I don't know a lot of people like a matte finish.

The natural effectiveness of glass is part of what makes it premium, so I do prefer that, but I don't mind the matte so much I just wish it was actually glass and not plastic, again inexcusable for your flagship line of smartphones. This is not the Fe, so in any event, so you see the difference. You've got a slightly curved screen on the s20 compared to the flat screen on the s21. You've got the thicker side, metal chassis, which I like much better here on the s21 and the camera. Housing is nicer and a little more inspiring as well.

So are the color options, even though uh I think Samsung could have done better with that. As well but uh, nevertheless, here we go. Welcome, start English, all right. For some reason it was shown 4g LTE here, usually you get 5g, I'm not sure what the difference is aside from me. Having changed my sim card, but it looks like the sim card activation is complete.

I think the old phone is no longer working with the old sim copy, apps and data. I'm not going to do that just yet so that I can show you what this is like out of the box, even though I'm not so sure most people start up a new phone without transferring stuff over anymore. But let me get my account info in here. All right. Getting account info just got a security alert on my iPad Pro.

You may have heard the notification all right. Let's start with fingerprints, I'll show you the setup process here. I'll start with a pattern. First now, supposedly with the snapdragon 888, we've got a new and improved in display fingerprint sensor should cover more area and be faster, we'll see, yes, sure I'll add another one. I like to typically add each thumb twice to my right: thumbnail.

Adjusting my thumb position as I go one more time and uh. If this is boring for you, of course, you can skip ahead a little but uh. There are people who like to see the entire unboxing and setup process. So here we are alright. It lets you add four to start.

I do not care for the additional apps enter. My Samsung account. It's got to go to your previous device and verify there, and here we go all set up now I'll transfer from my own phone for my old phone here in a bit, I expected a white wallpaper. This is interesting that it is dark. Maybe it's dark because of the time of the day, I'm not sure uh and all of a sudden, I do not have service.

I hope it's just refreshing that sim data, as mentioned yes, it looks like that's what it was doing so here we are we're into the phone, the Samsung Galaxy s, 21 5g. Now the phone is despite the plastic, slightly heavier than the galaxy s20 from last year. People may wonder why if it's plastic instead of glass, the reason for it being slightly heavier is that there's a considerable, more amount of metal on this device. The metal chassis is thicker on both sides and, of course, you got the metal around the camera housing. So in case you're wondering why this device is slightly heavier.

It's also slightly wider. Ever so slightly, I don't remember the exact measurements, but maybe a millimeter or two. I think it's a great size, actually a perfect size for a smartphone, and I've mentioned. I think before that, I'm six foot one, and you know my hands- are pretty proportionate to my height. But despite that, I prefer a phone that I can one hand with everything you know just it just feels better to use aesthetically.

It looks better. I already have a tablet in a computer, so I don't really need a gigantic phone. Some people, like that, that's great more power to you. You've got choices. So let me jump into the settings here and see what we've got connection sounds and vibration, notifications display, wallpapers themes, etc.

, etc. Now let me first check out storage and see what you get out of the box. Again, I'm not download. I haven't downloaded any of my old data. I haven't downloaded any photos or anything yet so storage got about 27 gigabytes used that's about 21 out of the box out of your 128 gigabytes.

So if you do the math there you get about a hundred gigabytes of storage. Remaining, let's go to display I'll switch this over to dark. I always prefer dark mode and have since well about 2012, and you can go into dark mode, settings and schedule it as needed if you want to do it by time of the day motion smoothness it's on adaptive. If you go to standard it's 60 hertz, but with adaptive, your refresh rate goes up to 120 hertz as low as 40, something hertz. It really just depends on what you're doing, but on adaptive you should uh.

You shouldn't notice anything but very smooth, scrolling and navigation screen mode set to vivid out of the box. I'm going to keep it that way. As you see, there's no option here to change the screen resolution. It's set to full HD, which many have complained is a downgrade and I guess technically, on the spec sheet. It is, but you had to set it for full HD anyway to take advantage of 120 hertz.

So I don't think you'll notice much of a difference, and it's definitely, definitely worth it to have that 120 hertz display, as you have seen already in this video, if I feel like there's warranted criticism towards Samsung, I will mention it, but I don't think the full HD screen is something to criticize them for, especially because of the 120 hertz display. You've got your edge panels here as usual. Do that again, these are edge panels. I don't really use those much, so I'm going to turn that off navigation bar. I like the swipe gestures, so you can do you can go to swipe gestures and then go to more options.

Furthermore, I will do swipe gestures here and if you go to more options, you can use Samsung's old, swipe gestures, or you can do the regular android swipe gestures. Just your hints. I don't like that. I don't like the little black bar that it adds gesture hint on the bottom, so I always swipe that off and I get a completely full screen experience which looks more futuristic to me personally so screen time out, I'm going to switch to one minute. Let's take a look at what else is here: you've got your wallpapers.

Let's see our wallpapers here, you've got video wallpapers, that's the video wallpaper that is available on this phone. My wallpapers, you see the pre-loaded wallpapers here, there's a little icon that lets. You know which one is a video and which ones are just still images I'll go to this video one here, and I will set it as my lock screen for now some nice wallpapers here. Let you check those out once again, let's jump into lock screen, always on display, etc. You've got those options here, your clock style I'll mess with those a little later.

Let's go to biometrics and security where I've already added four fingerprints, and let me set up my face recognition as well all right, let's open up the camera real quick for the first time, and we are greeted with a question of whether we're looking for more modes, and here we are, I'm not going to mess with any settings, took a photo of all king tut here very nice. Are you impressed king tut? Oh, he's speechless. He really is impressed with this camera. So that's that guys, uh the Samsung Galaxy s20, 5g, unboxing and hands-on uh I'll likely do a first impression or some kind of quick review, video and answer a couple of common questions uh just about the daily day-to-day use of the phone. Whether you should choose this over, let's say the galaxy s20 etc.

So I hope you guys enjoyed this unboxing once again. It's the phantom white version of this device. You can also get it in phantom violet phantom gray and I believe it's called phantom pink, the pink one with the cop perish metal chassis. So obviously the plus also comes in a couple of added colors. You don't get the gray, but you get the black, and you can do a custom.

At least Samsung calls the custom, a gold and red on their website. So that's that I'll see you guys in the next video take care.
