Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 Unboxing & First Impressions By Chrome Unboxed

Well the day is here: the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 is here in the office and, as we always do, we're going to hop in the box see what the thing feels like see, what it actually looks like in our hands in person and get some just initial impressions out of the way before we start that review process. So let's do what we do hop right into the box here, and I will say for this particular unboxing uh. Sometimes we tend to get into too much stuff uh. I want to spend the proper amount of time reviewing this particular device, because I think it's going to be an important one in a handful of ways.

But there are a few things about the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook that we honestly need to see like right now. We need to see what's going on with it, because we've talked about this thing quite a bit, and this device is in a lot of ways, a side step from the original galaxy, Chromebook and so uh, because it has two at the end. Most people think that this is going to be like the next iteration, but really it's more of a different iteration. It's a different take on the galaxy Chromebook, so we've got the awesome red color going on. We've still got a great looking screen.

We've got a powerful processor inside, but a lot of those specs actually take a step back from what the original did and so really when it comes down to it. Furthermore, we need to see what's this thing feel like: does it feel quality? What do these speakers sound? Like is the keyboard? Nice still. Does the screen look perfect, because if those things are a yes, then the price points at 549 dollars and 699 dollars for this one, the i3, with eight gigs of ram, start to make a little more sense. If the build quality is there and some nicer parts are along for the ride, but if they're not, then we start to run into some trouble, and it's going to be fascinating, trying to review this device. So that's really what we're going to tackle here as we jump into the box? Okay.

So let's just hop in the box and get started here. One thing you will note is, if you remember the unboxing of the original galaxy Chromebook, it was this nice white box, this kind of unique looking thing and people poke fun at me for getting excited about a box, but I mean this is what we generally see with Chromebook boxes, so we're kind of back to that standard. You know brown box and that's fine honestly if it recycles, and it helps the environment a little, I'm all for that. Rather than having a box that looks nice and can't be recycled, basically quick start guide, warranty information, nothing out of the out of the ordinary there, some really basic uh styrofoam going on around this thing, uh we'll get that out in just a second and then over here we've got an USB type-c charging, cable and then a power brick. So again, nothing that wasn't expected here with this particular Chromebook and just about every other Chromebook as well.

So here we go yeah, there's that fiery red color and just like the predecessor, it's got a propensity to pick up fingerprints just like most Chromebooks that come with a cool color and a cool kind of soft touch, aluminum feel but yeah, it's cool to the touch on the outside, so we're talking aluminum and right off the bat. I can tell you very firm, uh and substantial, and so for me in my head. I'm comparing this thing to the Pixelbook go, so the pixel will go is kind of thin. It kind of does a lot of the same stuff. It cut back in a lot of ways from the original pixel book but tried to maintain uh some nicer build quality parts, and so I feel like that's what Samsung's going for here and so that's kind of the measuring stick that will put this particular Chromebook up against all right.

So again, you've got this nice boxy design, the crazy looking red, color and already what feels like some pretty premium build going on here. So, so far, so good, let's get rid of all this junk. You know you really want to focus in here on the red. Let's just look at around the bottom here we do have a grill. There's a fan this time around.

So you know the overheating issues that were a problem on the original galaxy should be taken care of again. I can't speak to that until we have it for a little while uh, let's see, if there are any fans, yep some fans across the back, some fan ports here. So we definitely have cooling under control this time around and again with a 1080p screen and a core i3 inside. It's a 10th gen core i3 and this one there's also a Cameron version for 549. We shouldn't really run into battery issues either.

Samsung is claiming something around 13 hours of battery. So if those two things happen, we've already cleaned up a couple of the real big issues. With the original galaxy Chromebook around the sides, we've got an USB type-c, a volume rocker and then a micro SD card slot and then on the other side. We've also got another USB type c, and then just your power button and nothing really else. This is a very simplified Chromebook.

There's nothing really extra going on here, but lets uh, let's crack this thing open and see what it looks like on the inside all right. So let's try if it's a convertible, so I'm not expecting. Oh, it's got stuff on the feet too. So it's sliding that feels perfect. That might be close to a one finger lift once we there are plastic pieces on the bottom of the feet that I'm not going to waste time scraping off there right now, but that could get close to a one finger, lift which is really impressive for any convertible any time a convertible has a single finger, lift that means they've really engineered the hinge as well, and that's kind of a cool thing, speaking of which yeah screen's a tad bit wobbly.

Let's move it back to its stronger point here: yeah, it gets better once you have it here, but straight up a lot of convertibles get pretty wobbly when they're at 90 degrees. So at a normal viewing angle, that's not terrible, but yeah. The hinge mechanism does feel good. It doesn't feel like super weak or wobbly and then inside once you get inside this thing. You know it really feels uh a lot like its predecessor.

I mean the size of the trackpad the red. I do. Furthermore, I prefer these black keys on the red, because there's no issue with seeing them when it's like this. Instead of it being you know, silver keys with white backgrounds that sometimes work in certain light- I don't know if the backlight's even on at this point right now, but these keys are perfectly visible there. We go turn the backlight on they just kind of glow, again very pixel book grotesque uh.

In that sense, let's see yeah, there 's's a tad bit of creek and not creek. I shouldn't say a tad bit of give here in the frame, but overall, relatively sturdy here. So those are things I'm looking for like. If this thing's going to cost 700 bucks, it doesn't need to feel creaky, it doesn't need to feel cheap. It needs to feel good.

The speakers need to be good, and I can already tell you looking at the screen on this thing, so I'm going to crank it up, and it's going to blow the shot out, most likely very bright, very vivid, very colorful and again 1080p on this size of a display. So it's 13.3 inch 16x9 1080p on this is absolutely more than enough yeah digging in there. I can't really pick out any pixels. It looks great. I'm not surprised Samsung's done, q LED screens for a while, so the screen looks great, so that checks out I'm already not missing, really the AMOLED stuff going on here.

As long as this stands up under bright sunlight, it's sharp it's crisp, it's very colorful, it's very vivid, it looks great, so build quality feels pretty good screen, looks pretty good too okay, so got logged in got all that normal setup stuff out of the way, so that we can just talk briefly about a couple of things that I've already noticed just unboxing this device. One is that it does have galaxy Chromebook feel to it. So when I'm just using it, when I'm messing with the trackpad, the trackpad click feels great. The surface is super smooth. It's kind of small like the original galaxy Chromebook was, but it's very good.

It feels good to use. The keyboard. Has nice short, throw keys if you like that kind of keyboard like Pixelbook, go or something like that or the original galaxy Chromebook you're going to like this keyboard. It feels good and by the way, it's nice and quiet. So it's always nice to have a quiet, click short, throw keyboard again, if you like that type of keyboard, so I think a lot of people are going to like the keyboard.

The screen just looks really gorgeous, and I thought that this would probably be the case with this Chromebook I kind of figured, honestly. It would be sharp enough at 1080p. That's not a question because again we have lots of 1080p 13.3 inch Chromebooks, so sharpness wasn't the question, but you know that just the vividness of the colors, the peppiness on the screen, looks really, really excellent. So I think the screen checks out, I think, build quality feels pretty good. You do need to note that it is aluminum on the top.

It is aluminum on the bottom, but it is plastic here on the keyboard deck, but what Samsung feels like they have done here other than the fact that I can feel the lid is cool and the keyboard deck is not uh. They feel very similar to the touch like as far as the texture of them and the color is matched up almost perfectly so unless you really know that that's the case, you kind of miss the fact that this isn't aluminum on the inside. I wish it was at 6.99, I kind of feel like they should have gone with all aluminum here, but they didn't. So it's going to be little trade-offs like this with this particular device, because ultimately, Samsung wanted to bring the price back and make a more affordable galaxy Chromebook, and again it's all going to come down to whether the overall experience of this thing adds up to be something that's worth that price or if they just missed the mark. But one thing that Samsung is touting right here.

This huge sticker, that's on the palm rest of this device is the speakers, and so I pulled up one of our videos just has a cool little intro track on it. I'm going to crank these speakers up I'll start it at middle. Let's just see what they sound like, because they're touting them quite a bit all right. So, let's get so yeah pretty good. You can pick up quite a few of the base tones in there.

Lots of mid crispy highs good stereo kind of separation going on. They are downward firing, so they're coming from the bottom of the device, but ultimately they sound perfect. I don't have the Pixelbook go here to compare we'll, obviously do that, probably for the review. My guess is just like every other speaker I ever listened to. The Pixelbook goes probably going to beat it, but in the end they do sound.

I can already tell you a lot better than most other Chromebooks, so you start kind of seeing this whole thing come together here. We've got a perfect display good keyboard, trackpad, good speakers. The core i3 in here is going to be fine. It's going to get along just fine as long as the battery holds up, and the overall performance feels good. I think the core i3 this one has 8 gigs of ram and 128 gigs of storage.

I think this thing's going to be a perfect performer and, ultimately again it depends on what you care about with price and Chromebooks. If what's most important is just the experience and the feel and what it looks like on the desk and those types of things this thing's going to deliver. I can already tell you that, but if it comes down to just raw horsepower and if it comes down to just raw specs- and you want that 11th gen intel processor or something like that, then you know I don't know. I don't know if this is going to be the right Chromebook for you. Furthermore, I do want to throw in two USI compatibility.

Is here uh we haven't tested it just yet, but again all of this stuff will cover in the main review.
